I finally got around to listening to this today after a few weeks of it being out. I was not overly impressed with the last album so I didn't expect much from this one. I've not really like an album since 2004's Astronaut, the reunion album with the original line up, which had some great songs on it. I'm pleased to say that Paper Gods is certainly their best work since then and maybe since The Wedding Album in '93 or even Rio in '82 (Hmmm, seeing a pattern develop here, one great album every 11 years!).
The album opens with Paper Gods, it's a little laid back but it's a really good track with an interesting arrangement complimenting Le Bon's clever and often underrated lyrics. Last Night In the City then lays the ground work for what's to come with a 4 to the floor futuristic Studio 54 vibe, You Kill Me with Silence has a Chauffeur feel to it crossed with a Maroon 5 type chorus, Pressure Off features Nile Rogers with it's Notorious-like intro guitar riff and for me it's the album highlight with a big catchy chorus and stripped down verses over a funky bass driven groove.
And so it goes on. Good songs, cleverly crafted interesting lyrics, well thought out arrangements, sharp production, probably Le Bon's best vocal performance (he definitely gets better with age), it's pretty hard to find fault with this as there's very little not to be impressed with. Should be a massive hit for them really and well deserved.
Can't wait to see what they come up with in 2026! :-)

Can't. Stop. Playing. It.

Amazing album. Duran have not disappointed. Admittedly first play I was a bit unsure but my goodness this album is unbelievably good. Pressure Off is a funky masterpiece. The Universe Alone might just be their most beautiful song ever. Only in Dreams, Face for Today, Paper Gods....love. Not hugely keen on Last Night in the City, but buy this album. You won't regret it.

This takes me back to my youth when I would rush down to the record store then get home and play the album over and over. Love Butterfly Girl. Nick - great keyboards on Skyline. Most bands cannot replicate their earlier work and their creative juices dry up after fame and money, Duran are different and if anything are better than ever. Two weeks in and I can't get these songs out of my head and they are not ready to leave yet. Duran may have been the disciples of Roxy/ Bowie but have long since surpassed and departed from their masters. This may be their best album to date. Keep it up guys, great work.

What I love about Duran Duran is the eclectic mix of tunes that they always include on their albums and paper gods is no different. I have to admit that I love the more atmospheric DD tunes to the poppier & dance ones so for me the stand out tracks are Paper Gods, & The Universe Alone. This is a great album which will please everyone though and my only criticism is why did we have to wait 5 years for it!

last night in the City great song thanks to the addition to Kersha she’s brought something different
to the Duran sound
Butterfly Girl another great track with a great rock guitar , change the skyline this a very interesting track again very catchy lyrics
pressure off one word about this great track its a dance dance hit with great funk guitar sounds and

Don't be alarmed by the title, I for one enjoyed Red Carpet Massacre, but given RCM's luke warm reception amongst fans and critics I am suprised that they've gone with a heavily produced 'dance/groove' themed album. I expect John got the coffee and cakes run most days when it was in production as his guitaring is missing or lost amidst some heavy production on many tracks.
That said, I am enjoying it! Each day my favourite song of choice evolves. Not hugely keen on Pressure Off as the albums 'single'. The guys do make odd choices - All You Need is Now was an odd choice for the last album but i appear to be in the minority about Pressure Off, i'm glad so many are enjoying it. Only track i truly can't warm to is Sunset Garage. Particularly fond of Last Chance in the City, Paper Gods, You Kill me with silence, Danceophobia and Only in Dreams. Seems a good buz about the album and i can see why. Great to see Duran never getting complacent and always trying something new.
Buy the album, then see them live too.
P.s. Don't get me started on the album artwork - very out of character for the chaps. I can see what they've tried to do but it looks lazy and isn't interesting enough. It looks like what they did with Decade/Burning The Ground.
Enjoy!

As a teenager in the 80's my favourite group and has stayed that way, this kind if reminds me of the early days, an album that I can listen to all the tracks and enjoy them all. I adore the whole of this album, they do not disappoint!

A lifelong Duran fan, I waited with some trepidation for Paper Gods. A dance album with a host of young collaborators? Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson producing? Was this going to be a huge disappointment after the excellent AYWN? So, I Listened to it once. Hmmm, unsure. Listened to it again. By the 3rd listen I was hooked. Some of the bands best work here. The title track, sunset garage, what are the chances, pressure off my favourites. Having said that, every time I listen,I hear something new and brilliant. For me, this is the best record since the Wedding Album. Well done Duran Duran for still trying to push boundaries after all these years and keeping it fresh. Can't wait to see you live in December.

Pressure off to me is a continuation of All You Need Is Now. It's pure class. Whoever had the idea to work with Mark Robson needs a medal. It's paid off. All you need is now is such a good album and a return to form.
Hope this is as good.
Will look forward to hearing this upon release.

Well the album has been played to death. My recommendations as stand out tracks are 'paper gods' (it's a burner!), what are the chances and sunset garage. The obvious singles other than pressure off. It's a fabulous follow up to AYNIN and well worth the wait. Their collaborations work well, they add to the effect rather than diminishing . I'm so scared I am playing it too often!!

I wasn't sure what to expect as as usual Duran's new albums are totally different to the previous and if read that this one was more experimental and electronic than previous efforts. It's totally exceeded my expectations. It's different yet current. No way any other band with 35 years standing could produce this and they should be applauded for doing so. Producer Mr. Hudson has done a great job and so have Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers. Fav tracks? Paper Gods, Pressure Off, What are chances? The Universe Alone, Face For Today and all the bonus tracks. Excellent Job!!!

An Honest Opinion

Ok I've been a fan forever and seen the boys live many, many times, the thing you have to admire is that Duran Duran in the 80's were absolutely phenominal at producing hits but when the 90's came they were seen as dinosuars of a bygone era then they produced Ordinary World and Come Undone and the rule book was chucked firmly out the window! Since then the line-up has changed more times than the weather and they've been swamped in a sea of X-Factor contestants and fly by night boy bands so haven't hit the heady heights of the charts BUT people still buy their music and purchase tickets to see the boys put on a fantastic live show! We all thought that AYNIN would be a breakthrough into the mainstream again but Radio won't play them, so what do you do?..... Well, rather than conform they keep plugging away for us, the fans, it's certainly not for the money and remember they paid Timbaland a bucket load for his half a***d efforts on Red Carpet Massacre!
This album has 4 absolute stand out tracks for me, Paper Gods, You Kill Me With Silence, What Are The Chances and of course Pressure Off, which, by the way Match of the Day used a few weeks back, maybe Lineker is a Duranie but it was great to hear! I'd safely say this is the first album in a long time of Duran Duran's that you can bank on a good clutch of tunes to enjoy.. Fans will love it, newbies might just be surprised that these 50 somethings can still knock out a decent tune or two..
Form is temporary, class is permanent and Duran are class, any band that can write songs like Save A Prayer, Ordinary World, Hungry Like The Wolf, Rio and Pressure Off don't need to prove anything anymore!
Ps: I hated the Artwork when I first saw it but it's grown on me now and if you buy the physical CD version you get the images as stickers! I'm easily amused I know ;)

Who'd have thought 34 years ago - bopping to Planet Earth in my new romantic gear - that DD would still be putting out excellent inventive music in 2015. They've always been a bloody great band - and 'The Universe Alone' is surely one of the best things they've ever done. It is stunning.

Fantastic 14th album that will divide fans as its a turn in the other direction to AYNIN.
Whilst the previous album was a return to their Rio early day roots this new album produced by Nile Rodgers / Mark Ronson and Mr Hudson is a strange breed.
It can be most likened in my option to RCM which again divided opinion.
Thankfully I'm in the like category and really enjoyed RCM and now Paper Gods.
Very experimental and funky it's a solid fresh and current sound through every track sadly the bonus tracks are not as strong but still worth the deluxe upgrade.
My favourite track on the album is 'The Universe Alone' but there are so many others no fillers on this album.
If your hoping for more of AYNIN then you'll be dissapointed but if you give it a chance im sure you'll love it.

Think I've converted my 2 little girls (5 & 7). They've never liked me liking Duran essentially because they are not Ollie Murs or Taylor Swift, but they love Pressure Off - they've just been giving it some, dancing along in the garden. Currently the house favourite tune, until Ollie or Taylor do something else...or may be I won't tell them & ban the radio!
