Pushing the envelope...watch it bend
Two things I learned before hearing the album. 1) the band write it before they could play it (impressive) 2) it is a concept record based on three characters a woman on death row, the prison guard and the prison priest.
The songs have a multitude of time signatures odd timings and stops which take some getting used to however stick with it because this release gets more rewarding the more you listen.
There are no real "Choruses" in the pop sense of the word with melodic sections being only used once throughout a song. Also none of the riffs or melodies are repeated the same way twice but that's the point! This is a blend of standard metal riffs, jazz timings, emo tinged vocals with an almost punk rock energy. Interested yet? Good, because you should be.
Highlights for me are no stars over Bethlehem, divinity within and bury the hatchet with the latter being an encapsulation of everything Protest the Hero are about. In all honesty though the album is best listened to as a whole and over repeated listens. This is the only band I have heard over the last few years that I keep coming back to again and again (with the exception of Tool).
