Born Again again

Born Again is an album by heavy metal giants Black Sabbath. It features Ian Gillan's (ex Deep Purple) vocals that are a big departure from Dio's or Osbourne's styles. The rest of the line up were original members. This album features some short instrumental tracks which were often on their earlier albums. These are interleaved with quite long tracks like 'Zero the Hero'. There are some slightly sad and melodic songs in this album. 'Trashed' isn't one of them with its two guitar solos and its confluence of racing cars and alchohol. It's probably the only track that might be on a greatest hits compilation, most of the others are great album tracks especially for me 'Disturbing the Priest' and 'Keep It Warm'. The title track is one of the long and slow synth. (and guitar) songs with beautiful serious lyrics. This album was widely panned at the time but not by everyone and was a UK chart success. I categorise it with Dehumanizer and Never Say Die!, as a little below Paranoid, Vol. 4 etc. It has an unusual mix that's difficult to describe, there is bass but it's sometimes hard to make out, strong and slightly harsh mid-range with sometimes sharp treble. A charming album, definitely underrated.
