The hardest working man in pop is back, back, BACK! Anyone who has had heard Bright Light Bright Light’s previous three albums knows that he is a master of the glorious three and a half minute pop song, but could it be that Fun City seems to be taking things up a notch? And this time the hook-laden pop is accompanied by an impeccable roster of LGBTQ+ musicians and allies.
Lead single This Was My House is a propulsive, early 90s house influenced track that
features Donna Delory AND Niki Haris (for the uninitiated: Madonna’s backing vocalists and artists in their own right). 2020: you have taken so much, but thank you for delivering this event (and yes you too, Rod).
Follow-up single Sensation builds to a driving chorus about the healing power of a new love that coalesces with the euphoria of dancing. None other than Scissor Sisters’ cutie-pie Jake Shears puts in an appearance.
And then came I Used To Be Cool. Most albums would be running out of steam by the third single, but actually this might be the pick of the three (and not because Christian Bendek appears in the video). A super-hooky, yearning chorus with a bouncy 80s R&B/pop influence, topped with some delectable string stabs and synths to seal the deal.
The fact that more delights await (Sam Sparro! Andy Bell! Mark…Gatiss??!) make this one a sniiiip at the pre-order price (almost worth it for the cover art alone, tbqh). While 2020 has been depriving us of fun in so many areas, it’s a relief that Bright Light Bright Light is back to blast out of our speakers (or inside our headphones) and remind us that Fun City can be wherever we are.
