There are some songs on this album that could’ve been Evanescence at its best (Broken Pieces, Part of Me, Far from Heaven, Blind Belief, Game is Over) but the album suffers from two major issues that makes it a serious letdown.
1. By the time of its release 5 songs were released as “singles” - two would’ve done the job but this means on the day of release there’s basically only 5 new songs (Take Cover is only new as studio version and the first track is more of an intro as collection of sounds and dabbles it’s definitely not a song.) after a decade, the album gives 5 songs. It’s short, it has no bonus tracks even, it’s only 5 more songs. They should’ve recorded more if they release half of it in the year before. The album release is basically at the end of the album’s run, gives so little, and yet knowing Evanescence its the most fans will get for at least five more years... it’s not near enough to keep a band going.
2. Production and mixing. This doesn’t sound like an album, polished and bringing out the strengths of the songs / the band. It sounds like a bunch of demos!!! Their producer did the mixing and clearly can’t mix a song for his life. Amy Lee’s voice got distorted (listen to when the chorus comes on in Far from Heaven — ruins an amazing song completely!) and she gets muddled into the background (second verse of Blind Belief - you can’t even hear what she’s singing! And you have the same issue on almost every song!) The music itself too often is mixed so badly it sounds like noise (halfway in the bridge of Feeding the Dark is the best example of this). The vocals should be CLEAR sitting on top of the music. Take note from the mixing of SYNTHESIS or even EVANESCENCE (the album) that had the same producer. Now he ruined the whole listening experience because to understand the lyrics, you need extreme volume to just hear it, and it gets annoying with the music mixed to be noise instead. It’s like a collection of unfinished raw demos. It’s a band in a garage with the singer trying to out-scream two guitars and heavy drums using a drainpipe standing at the other end of the street.
Seriously, get it remixed ASAP, go back to the studio, the band cannot tour anyways, nobody can, and write songs to add to this that do NOT get randomly dropped as “singles”, and do a re-release, to save this. And please, scrap and lock away in the closet the one track that introduced the year of anxiety of what a mess this could become (and foreshadowed it truthfully), Wasted on You. It should’ve never been a single, not while it’s arranged like a sarcastic take on a children’s song with muddled vocals and a band desperately trying to chip in to make it appear like a rock song which it will never be. Neither is it single material, it never was, not with this musical arrangement at the least. There’s need for at least 5 more NEW songs and a complete re-mix of the WHOLE album, get it re-mastered and re-released. Take it from a fan since 2003 - this was the biggest musical letdown by a band I followed since my teenage years, and there’s been plenty (and plenty of bands), but this is just AMATEUR. And sadly, the signs of quality and greatness are shown clearly throughout making it that much worse that it’s let down by awful promotion approach and a terrible, clueless mixing and mastering of the whole album, besides the lack of material to actually release a complete album.
