Why 3 albums?
Well, I guess “Heart” “&” “Soul” could have been packaged in a collection like, ‘Weight of these Wings’ etc, BUT, each of the three releases from The Chief has a different feel and explores, from his base, different aspects of the broad church that is country music. Heart is more up tempo and leans Southern Rock/Country Rock and Soul does what it says on the tin with country blues and protest. And ‘&’ is somewhere in the middle. For me this is the pinnacle of Church’s experimentation and it’s solid, but for those who know that song I still lean towards ‘Desperate Man’ as to when he sonically hit 5 stars. This collection doesn’t have any obvious fillers or faff but at the same time oscillates around the 4.5 star mark and settles on the 4 but a savvy record label or editor could make a 15 track 5 star album out of what is here. That being said, perhaps we’re sold too much of that? And we’re better off for hearing the artist’s vision. There’s something for everyone in here but not everything is for everyone.
