Their finest album?

I’ll be honest, I’ve not bought a Maiden album for 30 years, the last being the dreadful No Prayer for the Dying. The 90s were utterly forgettable, bar the odd song. Because of that decade of nothingness I moved on and didn’t really get into Maiden again, even though I’ve heard most of the albums from Brave New World.
But along comes Writing on the Wall, and I’m thinking “this is pretty good”. One impulse pre-order later, and I’m listening to a truly glorious album. I’m going out on a limb here - I think this is the best album they’ve done, beating even Piece of Mind and Powerslave (my previous favourites). It’s made me go back and ‘discover’ and appreciate their albums since Brave New World.
I literally can’t stop playing it. I can forgive the slightly patchy production, the songs are just epic and there isn’t a weak one anywhere. This bunch of 60-somethings are back and if this ends up being their last album (I really hope not), what a great one to end on. Up the Irons!

A soaring masterpiece

What a fantastic album that reveals itself piece by piece! You have to have the patience to do this album justice and to really appreciate the layers of fantastic musicianship. After all these years the guys are still producing incredible music. You have to hand it to them, these tracks will sound amazing live. Well done!

Amazing

Just finished listening to this album by the poolside in Rhodes, sounds absolutely amazing through I-pod pros with N/C on. Some reviews have said about “ production issues” ???? Really??? Sounds bloody amazing to me, and some are saying the music is too load to hear some vocals! I heard every word sang, maybe they are mistaking the instrumental interlude over not hearing Bruce??? Over all it’s a bloody good, loud and amazing album.

Brilliant album... why compare with all of the stand alone albums... aye, I still hear the Lizzy and UFO Mr Harris.... So good I bought this rather mature offering.

Maiden’s 17th Masterpice

The new album is amazing, after The Book of Souls this album shows how Maiden have evolved and progressed from their previous album and are still trying out new things, yet keeping the Maiden sound iconic.
This album shows the evolution of Maiden from the 1st album right up to the present day. Up the Irons, may they reign forever.

Don’t believe the hype

There are few decent tracks but some boring plodding tracks that are instantly forgettable.
Mixing is pretty bad too. I wish I could be more positive but I’m being honest. It’s ok but that’s all. Maybe Bruce will come up with another Chemical Wedding on his next solo work to put a smile on my face.

It goes hard

As someone who has been into Maiden since 1989 I can honestly say this album goes super hard. This is the closest we’ve got to Seventh son. Enjoy.

Wonderful

An incredible album that gets better with every listen. I’m a complete Maiden fan, this is one of their best, it’s certainly in my top two of the current 17 albums.... it’s such a wonderful listen. I love it, thank you please. Up the Irons!!

Shame these songs won't be played live..

For the album, the arrangement, vocals, sound is very Maiden. It's utterly brilliant, and well worth the wait. Better than book of souls, Bruce said recently, hmm, don't know.
The one potential negative are the songs are so long. I persoanlly don't have an issue with this, as it allows Dave, Adrian & Janick to do their thing. But because of this, the band probably won't play these songs live. Perhaps writing on the wall, and Darkest Hour, but not the 12 minutes ones!
It therefore begs the question, why create such long involved songs, when to play one live, will mean dropping 3 smaller ones, from the regular set list?!?
As a record it's stunning, and a very well put together maiden record. Worth the wait?...Damn right.

New producer please

I must admit I’m enjoying the album at this early stage much more than l did the last three studio albums. The songs are darker and it’s good that they all seem better suited for Bruce’s vocal range at this stage of his singing career. However, the production on the album (like the previous three) let’s it down badly. There are many instances where Bruce’s lyrics are almost inaudible. I don’t know whether it’s Steve Harris’s influence on production or whether it’s just Kevin Shirley but we have another studio album full of songs which will probably sound better live (assuming LOTB doesn’t prevent a Senjutsu tour at some point). Their faith in KS is admirable but l can’t help feel they may have been better trying someone else, just for a fresh perspective.

Just How do they do it?

40 years on they still astonish me, a few short blips sure but they seem to get better. Don't understand how any Maiden fan can turn thier nose up at this. All the classic elements of prime Maiden are in tact but with few new nice touches in there as well.
Absolutely astonishing.

Better than ever!

Definitely some interesting new sounds/melodies to an already diverse collection. A hard hitting, dark and powerful album. Stand out performances from all but notably Nicko and Bruce! This is Maiden with the shackles off (certainly more complex than TBOS) and whilst it will take many longer to digest than previous albums, it already has instant classics! Only listened through twice so far but the best tracks for me personally are Stratego, Lost in a Lost World, The Time Machine, Death of the Celts and Hell on Earth!

Epic

Like a fine wine they get better with age. I love the early period of this band but I’m enjoying more the latter day prog metal renaissance of this band since Brave New World. The songs are deeper and take more time to absorb.

Solid album

When this album was announced, part of me was bracing myself at the fact it might not be very good.
This is absolutely not the case here. Iron Maiden are guys in their 60s composing songs that are solid musically. They’re still evolving, changing and experimenting while still staying true to what Iron Maiden is about and I was so happy when hearing these songs.
I’m hoping they will AT LEAST two more albums before calling it a day, because they’ve proven they’ve still got it. Some songs you can like more than others, but there is not a “weak” song on this album.

Can’t please them all

Maiden are no longer the fast and loud 80’s metal band, and their new sound shows a great deal of maturity.
In places you would be forgiven for thinking that you are listening to either Accident Of Birth or Chemical Wedding, and that is definitely not a bad thing.
There’s a lot of singalong tunes on here, and if the rumours of playing the whole thing live transpire, I don’t think there will be many disappointed.
Aside from the hints of Bruce’s solo work, there are a couple of songs that would have fit in well with Blaze Bayley’s time in the band, especially the intro to Hell On Earth which sounds like it should be on The X Factor.

Strange.

Songs are pretentiously long! Stop it.
Can’t understand a word Bruce is singing let alone the meaning.
Solos are astonishing and the melodies kill it.

Mastered through a sock ?

The songs are pretty good. I think many of them will sound fantastic live. But sonically this album is not great. It sounds as though it's been recorded iin someone's bedroom using basic equipment, rather than in a fantastic recording studio.
When metal is well-recorded, given a wide dynamic range and mastered to perfection, it sounds amazing. A lot of metal bands do this very well. Unfortunately, Iron Maiden isn't one of them.

Writing is definitely on the wall

I’ve loved this band since I first saw them in 78 so they don’t owe me anything but this album is instantly forgettable.
Book of souls was a slow burner, now I love it but this one does nothing for me I’m afraid

Awesome as always

Firstly - ignore anyone who says they should call it a day etc
Onto the album.
This is another superb album, destined to make your choice of a favourite album even harder.
How many bands can you name with such a vast body of work that still produce authentically original tracks? They have moments that are reminiscent of other hits - I would bet it’s deliberate to allow them to move from one song into another!
There’s more energy, accuracy, melody in their work than bands half their age and it shows.
Fresh influences of other musical styles without adopting electronica/disco/rap etc
In short, fans will love it. To the uninitiated it might be quite a shock, but only because these guys are the legends. Often imitated, never surpassed.
They make Sabbath look and sound like a pub band from the eighties,
Awesome!

They’re back (Updated)

Wow what an opening song for this long awaited album. Even after forty years they still have the magic to entertain. Great song with Writing on the wall and stunning video as well. As usual with Iron Maiden it’s got a story to tell, all set to a fantastic song.
Listened to the whole album a few times now and absolutely love it. The Parchment and Hell on Earth along with Senjutsu and Stratego are epic tracks and so good to listen to. One of my favourite albums by Iron Maiden to date. Some great homages to early tracks but feels fresh and epic.
If you love great music this album is a must buy. 9.5 out of 10.

Unfortunately Going in Steep Reverse

Apart from Days of Future Past & Adrians solo in Writings there really isn’t anything new here to get excited about . Just more of the very worn out same plodder …..& what is it now with a 2 minute intro of acoustic bass & guitar then drums ..completely underwhelming & predictable & long & boring .

Love the new songs

I’ve been a maiden fan since I was born. (I’m 14 now) and me and my dad can’t wait for the new album to be fully released. My dad has every album so far on dvd and will definitely be buying this one. The new songs are both amazing and the music video for writing on the wall is brilliant
