Pretentious

There's no real music, just a pretentious lead singer loving the sound of his own drab voice! The Car must be an electric one, so slow and almost silent!

Don’t take it too seriously 🤷🏼‍♂️

So it’s not quite what your average Arctic Monkeys fan wants but you can’t argue that Alex Turner certainly has got everyone talking about this album.
I personally love it and the more you listen to it the better it gets.
If you want the old Arctic Monkeys sound stick an old album on….it’s that simple.

Unsure needs another listen.

I’ve been an Arctic Monkeys fan since their first album and just had a first listen since purchasing a copy of The Car.
Admittedly there are similarities with TBHAC which I didn’t like. I was hoping there’d be differences and songs you can singalong with family and friends to but can’t see us belting out a song like Body Paint vocally anytime soon at a get together.
I do understand that artists change and grow up lyrically. There’s a band called The Fratellis that I’m massively a fan of and their style of music grew up after Costello Music and Here We Stand and their music is still equally as beautiful and lyrically beautiful. Anyway I’m aware it’s not a Fratellis album I’m reviewing here just making a point.
I will give it another listen and probably come back and give a final review because I desperately find myself wanting to like their latest music still and I want to still understand them lyrically.
As for now after first listen I’m undecided. But sometimes it takes a couple of more listens before saying okay now I get it.

Complete Garbage

After the first album where every track was amazing to the second where 70% were the albums went downhill further and further album by album, made a comeback with AM but lets be right only 4 tracks were good on that, then 1 good track on Hotel and now we are here…..absolute garbage! Get back to the UK get back to Sheffield and soothe the real fans with good music! What a waste of money this was im so mad……complete and utter garbage!

Awful

Waiting for Alex Turner to take his head out of his ar*e
Go listen to The 1975, a far superior band with far more talent and a far better discography. The last two arctic monkeys albums have been awful.

Sorry, but not for me

I’ve just requested a refund, I used to love the high energy, relatable lyrics and fun. This album doesn’t make me feel happy, I can’t think of an appropriate time to listen to this album

I’ve give this album a good few listens over the weekend in various different ways. It’s great to have them back. Such a consistent band in everything they do.

Whiny Slow Boring Basically Crap

Oh how the band has fallen , mainly due to the ego and issue of Alex having his head up his own rear. I would give ZERO stars if possible.

What happened

Self indulgence on an epic scale. I can’t believe this band that was one of our truly great British acts has now morphed in to this dull, dreary, shadow of its former self. I can only liken it to how when Black Eyed Peas decided that using auto tune and making bad electro pop music was a good idea, it was the end for them, and it’s the end for AM. Truly sad.

The Ride.

Investigate 2018’s more lounge and hotel sounds of ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ and you would think this wouldn’t be the band that made “AM”, “Favourite Worst Nightmare” or “Humbug”, and you would assume Turner and co would take on any criticism regarding that change in sound and again you would be wrong.
With only ten tracks it’s keeping it quite subtle and focussed with an affection and appreciation for the film industry interwoven via the music videos for this album and with an artistic flourish Turner regards himself in and has very much to right to justify. After all, 'There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” had a noir visual look and that seems to have translated to the rest of the album – rivalling their earlier work on “Cornerstone.” A range between soundtrack, art and band music. “Hello You” has strings and consistent drums galore which amplifies why the quartet are still great at production and sound design. “Humbug’’ is channelled through the track “Sculptures Of Anything Goes”, “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am” airs on the sounding close to “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” but with a upbeat tempo mirroring the Funk, Soul and R’n’B of 80s hits. “Body Paint,” is a classical music infused pop song that feels like a remnant of an ‘AM’ track that didn’t quite make the cut. The album is now full-on Baroque-styled pop with peppering of alternative rock. Alex’s vocal cadence and harmony still resonate and remain in tip-top shape after almost twenty years plus. Strong vocal storytelling that feels as classic as ever but doubtful they will stand the test of time. Title track “The Car” has some fantastic song-writing mingled with ethereal vocal cadences from Turner and co. Supported delicately with lighter instrumental work. Placid track “Jet Skis On The Moat” discusses mental health issues and masculinity with jazz-den vibes and some 60s to early 70s classic or vaudeville cinema. While “Big Ideas” has independent suspense and noir 90s cinema reflection.
The difference between walking and knowing the path are at play here. The seventh album ‘The Car’ is not going to win any fans that didn’t regard the last work as part of the AM cult but it does improve on the ideas, themes and productions used to make it more jazzy.

Bands change

Too many people want the same old formulaic tunes yet this is a band in the ascendancy. Much like when Weller finished The Jam to move in another direction, the AM are moving to the beat of their own rhythm and this is a great album. It’s not as instantly accessible as some of their earlier work (and this seems to be a problem for those with limited attention spans), this will go down as a genuine amazing album. It’s music for grown ups. Which is what the Arctic Monkeys are doing. Chapeau, lads.

The Beautiful Evolution

Wow! This album is awsome, beautiful, intricate, soundtrack to a movie never made and proof the Arctic Monkeys have always been the best of our generation. Well done boys! Alex's voice is exquisite and he is still one of the greatest songwriters the industry has ever known. These songs will be great performed live too. So many layers to this band, their evolution has been beautiful to witness and hear.
For everyone criticising... This is what real music sounds like! Just becaue you don't know it after one listen or it doesn't have the speed or energy of previous albums, that doesn't make it a bad album. They've already done energetic and catchy and it was also genius. Allow artists to explore their own potential and creativity, they've earned that right.
Artists evolve and this is a work of art, I don't know what you're all listening to???
You'd be criticising if they were still doing the earlier sounds!

Brilliant and exceptional. AM have advanced their style since the heady days of Rotherham having grown and matured, with this showing in their music. Superb production with outstanding vocals and strings. Highly recommended.

Mature Monkeys

I was never really a fan of their early stuff. Probably good if you were a teenager going out getting drunk, but we, well most of us, grow up and mature. And this is exactly what AM have done. Despite the uncultured fans of vintage Monkeys giving the album 1 star, I think this is a great sounding album, but I guess people don’t like change! Remember the Beatles were singing poppy Love Me Do before they matured into their White Album sound. Embrace change haters.

Awful

You wait so long only to be disappointed (again). A band that promised so much have rapidly descended into mediocrity. Alex Turners whining vocals of late pretty much make this unlistenable and unfortunately his ego seems to have taken over. Matt Helders must must be bored out of his head having to play the same monotonous beat on every tune. I have bought everything so far, but it might be time to leave them behind, I’m not sure they can recapture the magic again.

Rubbish.

Simply put. Completely rubbish. Boring. And most of the tracks sound the same. Same with the album before this.
What happened to the music they made with hits like “bet you look good on the dance floor”???? This music is suitable for being elevator / Lift music. Overall - don’t waste your time listing to This crap.

To each their own i guess

It really depends on what u like listening to, and whilst this album isn’t catchy or like the old arctic monkeys vibe , they have matured and are almost 36 years old now ! Obviously , they aren’t going to be creating BOUNCY ENERGETIC CRAZY MUSIC for teens ! Although you can still listen to this , and that the album is not horrible to the ears , it does not stick and not catchy and (depending on your music taste) not as good as the old arctic monkeys stuff In my opinion , this isn’t top tier 5star music but not 1 star either , as body paint’s instrumental is quite enjoyable even , but the most I would give this is 4 if I TRULY ENJOYED this type of music You’re better off buying their older albums than this one , and don’t believe the hype on this album , not that good but still enjoyable

Um

I understand them moving away from the laddish indie rock they started with; it's an absolutely exhausted genre and anything in that area would just be a pale reproduction of what they've already done. Bands SHOULD change it up, try new things, grow as artists.
However, this lounge vibe should have died with Tranquality Base. Wake up, boys. You're sending us all to sleep. "Grown Up" doesn't have to mean plodding, beige elevator music that doesn't go anywhere. It's just not good. This actually makes the last album seem full of life by comparison.
They're capable of so much better than this vanilla slop.

More Elevator Music

Ever since the Arctic Monkeys first burst onto the scene circa 2005 I've been a massive fan of their music. Their first two albums (WPSIATWIN and FWN) will forever be in my 'most played' collection. However, I was not a fan of TBH&C - way too slow and bland for my liking - so I was seriously hoping for a 'return to form' (i.e. something more energising & uptempo) from The Car. Sadly, having listened to this latest offering several time, I have to say The Car is more 'elevator music' - totally bland and uninspiring. If you are a fan of their 2005-2016 (indie-rock) era, don't bother with The Car - it's another massive letdown.

I can’t stop listening to it. It’s beautiful. Like all their albums it gets better with each listen. Yes they’ve matured but then so have I. My daughter has grown up with the arctics, she’s 18, and has loved all their albums, also loves it.

The Car (Crash)

A long wait to end up being as disappointed as I was when I heard TBHC. Back to back boredom. Helders was promising more up beat this time around but unless that comes from the other 8 tracks which I seriously doubt, I think I won’t waste the money buying the rest of the album.

Dull and boring

I was a huge fan of the Arctic Monkeys until there last album which was so bad I couldn’t quite believe it was the same group, I was hoping the next album would be a return to form but if the first 2 songs are anything to go by this is even worse. The songs are just so dull and boring and I will certainly not be buying this album, so disappointing.

Evolution

Another step along the road to greatness. I genuinely don't understand folk who want just more of the same. What was delivered in the past was/is great but the band need to evolve...and they are evolving. The last album was excellent (following a lot of 'meh' reviews on here) and from the singles, this has the a similar feel. The tracks grow with every listen and I'm looking forward to hearing them in the context of the full album.
