I had no intention of ever liking this album at all to be honest. Being compared to James Blunt, possibly the most dull singer/songwriter post-Dido, I'd expected nothing more than a few melodromatic, angstful songs. For the most part, I was completely wrong. It's actually really accessible, full of tunes and a great voice. Granted, the lyrics are hardly profound, but there's something so down-to-earth about the whole affair that it's difficult not to love it. 'Loving You' is a fantastic, bluesey sort of number, his distinctive voice matching to song perfectly. Similarly, 'Last Request' and 'Million Faces' work in this vein. For me, however, the standout track is the brilliant 'Alloway Grove', with it's uplifting tempo, and a musical sense of direction. So ok, the album has weak points; 'Rewind' does fall into the teenage angst camp, and 'These Streets' seems rushed and ill-thought-out, but that's not enough to take away from the fact that this is a good debut. Wether or not he can pull off a follow-up, we can only wait and see, though one thing is for sure that I won't be so apprehensive going into listening to it at all.
