Overdue monolith
Followed DWTD since The Shape and my god have they gone from strength to strength, taking hard synthwave to its absolute zenith with this EP, showcasing some mind blowing compositions of dark electro and pure metal that you can practically hear grinding pleasure into the brain. The new inclusion of proper vocals (that aren’t just remixes of older tracks by other artists) hits heavy and just makes me feel like this is the potential of these guys’ passion project fully realised. Cold As Hell, showing off the chops of Shaun from Lebrock for the first of two tracks is an absolute slayer of a tune, and makes me wish he’d become a full time vocalist for them as the fusion is just fire. But then, going back to full instrumental, Rust at the end is a love letter to anyone who thrills at the magic of the guitar (shout out to Cole Bolland for that masterpiece.)
DWTD are, in my opinion, the pinnacle of hybrid synth-rock, and have somehow managed to evolve that hybrid from its 80s-inflected roots into something far greater. I love them, and if you’ve never heard of them before, now’s the time to get in on it with the rest of the skeleton crew!
