An all-around cracker
Arguably one of their best lineups in recent years, Grimethorpe Band's big strength has always been their sound - and they certainly don't disappoint on this CD. The playing is exemplary, the dynamic contrast superb, and the adaptation to style without equal. They also have the advantage of a simply awe-inspiring bass-section on this recording, and the acoustic of Dewsbury town hall compliments their sound perfectly.
Though the whole CD is a remarkable achievement, 'Chanson de Matin' gets an especially sympathetic treatment, 'Men of Harlech' is played with pomp and pride, and Holst's 'Jupiter' crosses so well to a brass band one might almost belive that as how he originally envisaged it.
And no true British citizen can possibly listen to track 7 without instantly thinking "5pm on Saturday, Sport report!"
