Stunning!

Wonderful work! Boom boom bap is marvellously hypnotic, it won't leave me for days each time I play this record. I was delighted to discover the wonderful Michael Clark chose a good selection of tracks from this record for his latest work. Michael Clark is a legend that shines regardless of the soundtracks he selects for his shows, but certainly being caught by the opening notes of boom boom bap at the theatre was a highlight! I love 'after six'. What a great album! Never banal, never obvious, extremely beautiful, a real work of art! Buy it!!

Don't buy this.

Previous reviews led me to buy this; I wish I hadn't. It contains the fey vocal harmonies that instantly identify Mr. Gartside's work but not one iota of the crisp punchiness that made the first two albums such classics.
I have given up on the USB turntable and bought the CD of Cupid & Psyche 85, I got this the same week. What a disappointment in comparison. Sadly the songs are quite good, supercharge them and you'd have a million-seller but in the current form I'm afraid they're delivered too weakly for my taste. Funny isn't it? It's possible that the two musicians that worked on the first albums and were treated with such disdain (allegedly, according to another reviewer) could have been very useful on this one.
A fully loaded, electrified version would be well worth the effort.

Wonderful

The word genius is used often in pop music. Green Gartside, the man who is Scritti Politti, is one of the few artists deserving the accolade. He is one of the greatest writers and singers ever. I would rank him alongside Brian Wilson, Lennon and McCartney, Bowie and Prince. This album is one of his finest. Introduce yourself with The Boom Boom Bap or Mrs Hughes and you will not be disappointed and you will soon want more.

fab

This is a brilliant album, how come I'm only the second person to write a review? Satisfying songs come at you from left field, but you can sing along, and Green's voice is still pure as vodka. Certainly don't hesitate to buy it. The songs are mystifying, dreamlike in the way they seem to shift shape and meaning, but they linger and uplift and intrigue. I love it still and play it now with real pleasure just to hear the words and listen to the music, nothing nostalgic but newly minted each time. Wonderful

White Bread Black Beer and a Rainbow of Colour

This is Scritti Politti's finest work to date and one of the best albums for 2006. I played the album once through and couldn't fathom where it was going nor what it all meant. All I knew for sure was that I loved it. And I really do mean that; I loved it. Still do. Buy the album to impress your friends. Fans will recognise the voice immediately; others will be intrigued by this enigmatic offering. How can music of this complexity seem so simple? And how can music of this simplicity seem so complex? It's a riddle and in over 50 plays of the album, I'm no closer to an answer. Personal favourites are The Boom Boom Bap (haunting and attractively weird), Mrs Hughes (sublime and also attractively weird) and Locked (rousing.)
