Album Of The Year For 2007
I converted to The Dillinger Escape Plan after hearing this album, though not instantly. After several listens the record becomes familiar, but instead of wearing out and becoming boring, it grows to become something much more which is a very special thing.
Sure, it's frightening to the casual, perhaps ignorant listener who may disregard the way it sounds. But to the more open-minded individual, this album will reward you with its almost perfect structure from the in-your-face opener "Fix Your Face" right through to the mellowed out, jazzy (at least until the last couple of minutes) "Mouth Of Ghosts". There's even a poppy singalong delight known as "Black Bubblegum" which will surprise many early DEP fans.
Many of the tracks here are spazzed-out "mathcore" songs with ever-changing time signatures and aggressive shouting, but it's far from the stereotypical headbanging affair which the metal genre is associated with. There's also very accessable sections, such as the chorus of "Milk Lizard" and "Dead As History". Mastodon's Bret Hinds also makes an appearance on the excellent "Horse Hunter".
The Dillinger Escape Plan have made a truly special record here, despite their many member changes - Chris Pennie, the previous drummer had left to join Coheed & Cambria.
In my opinion, this is an instant classic which should be heard by more people. It even just beats the excellent "In Rainbows" by Radiohead. For those who would argue that it has a rather short running time, I would say this: The Dillinger Escape Plan have an ability to make every second count.
