I've lost count of the number of Joy Division compilations. This is a band that was only around for four years, and only recorded two studio albums. You only need two of the compilations: 'Still' and 'Substance'. Ignore all of the subsequent cash-ins released after 1988, including this one.

Much agreed with the unanimous majority here, this album is beyond phenomenal in regards to musical content. This album literally represents the surface of a catalogue of amazing work both lyrically and in instrumental aspects of the band. It's a shame that iTunes haven't involved the Peel sessions which are every bit as good as the edited versions on cd. Don't let that put you off to not give Joy Division a listen would be an absolute travesty on your part!

it’s the quality what counts

ok “on;y” 14 songs, but 14 timeless classics. yeah they could have put more on but they didn’t. rate the MUSIC; atmosphere, transmission, love will tear us apart, digital and dead souls all in one set for 8 quid, what more do you want? if you’re not gonna buy all the albums this is all you need.

Wow

This album is very mediocre for a best of in fact it is a rip off,the songs are decent enough but to get the full spectrum and transitional journey it would be better to purchase Unknown Pleasures, forget Closer and Still..then Movement 1st New Order album, forget Power Corruption and Lies,Substance simply the best altogether album and if not really a fan of either JD or NO then you get a brilliant album on this alone it's like a best of, then of course to wrap it up Technique this the late '80s album that had a more Indie / rave feel of the time. After this they went downhill although Republic is not too bad just not as good as their previous stuff. Don't waste your money on this best of you might as well by the CD that way you could still put on iTunes and on to your iPod.

Joy Division are the best but this is not

If you want to do it right, buy The Peel Sessions first, then Unknown Pleasures, then Closer, then Still, then Substance. These have all the joy division tracks that ever existed, and you need them all otherwise you will miss gems that are not on this selection

Joyous Division.

During the time Joy Division were at the height of musical prowess I was into totally other styles of music and paid no heed to these seemingly monotonous drones that the alternative 'Goth' types listened to. Since then I have grown up and after seeing 'Control' I am ashamed of my ignorant past and have attempted to redeem myself by buying this album. Some may call me plastic for my late interest in this great music but I don't really care; this is a fantastic compilation and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, I may be missing out on other top tunes that joy Division wrote so I am going to search for more. Four stars, The Sound and the Fury!!!!!!

A decent collection of tracks, but you really need Unknown pleasures and closer to apreciate joy division in my opinion. Plus no Interzone!!! and you can buy this elsewere for much cheaper and it includes a bonus CD

Star Rate the album please people, NOT Itunes price

I wrote a review on this fantastic album in October 08, however saw that many people gave album a 1 star rating, however when reading the review the rating was given due to the Itunes price tag - not the album! In my rating I have also stated my distaste in the Itunes price, which is not value for money as you don't get ALL the music which is included in the album. So I bought a physical copy including BOTH cd's for £4.98! I have however rated the album 5 star as it's worth it. Please all you good people out there, don't rate the album down because of the price, it's not Joy Division's fault! It's a quality album! These low star ratings will bring the gross rating of the album down which is unfair.
Rate high and state your distaste in the price tag!

..but these are my favourite band.
they're so amazingly good. i love ian curtis' lyrics especially on atmosphere.
and i hate the way that most people thing that they're so depressing because of the way he sings. but it's not. and they're just wow!
just get this if you're new to them, or equally get "unknown pleasures"

I'm going to just review this album for what it is, regardless of other 'best of's. It is an awesome collection of most of Joy Division's best songs. 'Disorder' is their most underrated song, so I was especially glad to see it here. I'm going to give it 5 stars because the music merits it but I would suggest you buy the cd because of the Peel Sessions extras and more.

You Need To Listen To Joy Division

If you follow the independent music scene no collection is complete without a Joy Division record. However you are better buying the cd as it comes with a second disc of rare recordings from the Peel sessions.

Really do not bother buying this album.. A lot of the songs (particularly those on Unknown Pleasures) are best in the context of their respective albums. If you want a decent Joy Division compilation just get Substance. You can pick it up for £3 if you look hard enough...

Excellent!!

Anybody who slates this album just has not listened to enough Joy Division (Puss In Boots!!). It is true there should be another cd of John Peel Sessions but if you want all JD's tracks in one place this is the album for you. The inclusion of the 12" version of She's Lost Control is a bonus. There are a few other best of albums out there but this stands out as the one with all the 'Hits.' Get it now!!!

The work of joy divison laid the foundations for modern indie no joy divison - no stone roses or smiths - no stone roses - no oasis - no oasis then modern music wouldn't sound as good. They have done much more of brittish music than most could claim, perhaps as much as even the beatles. Come on people regonise brilliance when its there, and its in aboundence in the complinemation even though it doesn't scratch the surface of Curtis's vast body of work. Sure diffinate classics are missing but the basics are their and if thats all you want that buy this, if not buy the Heart and Soul Box set with every song they ever recorded. But then agian you get what you pay for...

why?

It took me a while to "get" Joy Division - something I put down to my own immaturity at the time, preferring as I did the more dance-oriented sound of their evolution, New Order. However, the more I listened to tracks like Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere, the more I realised their genius. To lose Ian Curtis at such a young age was an undeniable tragedy, but their music inspired a generation and has as much to offer today as it has ever done. The production of tracks like Atmosphere is something special - play it loud on a decent stereo and you cannot fail to be moved by the clarity of the sound. Sure, some of the tracks sound a bit industrial, but that is part of its magic. The bass guitar lines are all powerful on tracks like She's Lost Control and if its not music you love straight away, give it some time - it is well worth getting to know it. A great band, sadly missed, but never forgotten.
