It took me a while to "get" Joy Division - something I put down to my own immaturity at the time, preferring as I did the more dance-oriented sound of their evolution, New Order. However, the more I listened to tracks like Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere, the more I realised their genius. To lose Ian Curtis at such a young age was an undeniable tragedy, but their music inspired a generation and has as much to offer today as it has ever done. The production of tracks like Atmosphere is something special - play it loud on a decent stereo and you cannot fail to be moved by the clarity of the sound. Sure, some of the tracks sound a bit industrial, but that is part of its magic. The bass guitar lines are all powerful on tracks like She's Lost Control and if its not music you love straight away, give it some time - it is well worth getting to know it. A great band, sadly missed, but never forgotten.
