one of the best albums ever.

I bought this album for my brother and decided to listen to it anyway, and honestly I love it. I definitely recommend it.There's a couple of songs I'm not that keen on but it's basically a perfect album.

Just letting you know that finally: 2013 will herald the return of the band, with a superb new album & all that goes with it's release. Something to really lookout for. Gonna be something! :-)

Great follow up album

In my opinion this is just as good if not better than their first album. I really don't understand the negativity from some people because I think this is a brilliant little album! Cousins, Giving Up The Gun and White Sky are the best tracks in my opinion but all of them are good and they all have a really optimistic feel to them which is one of the main reasons I like this band.

Every song is utter bull! It sounds like an eight year old wrote it! The first four songs and I'd had enough. Cousins and holiday are bearable but other than that it is torturous

Vampire Weekend

It is by a country mile the best album I have ever listened to. Every song is immensly catchy. Only song that isn't up to scratch is I think ur a contra, but that's just my opinion. Amazing album!!!

Love It!

This album is so unique and is in my top ten albums of the 2010. My favorite track on the album is Horchata. The whole album is well developed and the all the tracks on the album have very inetresting sounds to them. I've been a fan of Vampire Weekend for years. I would recommend this album to anyone. This is also a great seconds album follow up.

Different, but still amazing!

I think any open minded Vampire Weekend fan will enjoy this, it's still got the style the band are well known for, just with a different kind of twist to the first album, still amazing I'd definitely recommend it to any music fan or Vampire Weekend fan!

Very, very good!

Cousins and Holiday, what smashers, White Sky too! This is the return i was waiting for from VW! Don't really get California English, but this album is still awesome :)

Diplomat's Son, Run and Giving Up The Gun get stuck in your head really easily too :)

California!

I became slightly obsessed (lol :D) with VW after hearing their first album and this one's just as great, but it's a real grower - they're my favourite band, but it took me a few listens to fall in love with this. There's a definite California theme going on through the album.

The best tracks are probably White Sky, Cousins, Diplomat's Son and Giant (loving the horns on that one!)

Probably one of my best albums of 2010, definitely my most listened of the past few years.

A must-buy.

I love vampire weekend so much. Ezras voice makes you fall in love with the songs.

Run, Horchata, cousins and giving up the gun are the best tracks on the album without a doubt..

Incredible

This album has to be the best thing i have ever bought, i love every single song on it. I have listened to the whole album probably about 30 times and im still not even remotely bored at all! Honestly, if you liked their first album; you will love this one !!

Wow!

In my opinion, this is a lot better than their self-titled first album 'Vampire Weekend'. They have managed to mature as a band aswell as keep their fantastic sound which never fails to make me smile. If you buy this album you won't be disappointed as I beleive their are no fillers on the album which you sometimes find on a bands second album after such a successful first album. Well done Ezra and co, I look forward to the next album!

Staggeringly Superb

Second albums are rarely as good as the debut- but this is a pleasing exception. Being a dancer, I even set a choreography to one of the tracks. I highly recommend 'White Sky', 'Giving Up the Gun' and 'Cousins'. Yet, my favourite song of the album is 'Run' with it's majestic melody and catchy lyrics. Devastatingly magnificent.

Decent Follow Up

No where near the achievement of the first album but there are several good tracks on here. It has the same fun fancy free sound as Vampire Weekend (self titled debut album) but the tracks are less polished and sound a little more childish. Still brings a smile to your face when listening though so worthy of a spot in anyones collection.

Superb second album

What a fantastic album, it's already one of my 'most played' albums in 2010. Easily as good as the first album, if anything slightly more polished. It's more of a 'grower' than the love at first sight feeling I had with the first album, but I've ended up taking more from this one and definitely play it more than the first.

Some definite undertones of Paul Simon here but with a harder/edge and more cryptic lyrics. Top songs, Hotchata, Run, Cousins, Diplomat's Son, I Think UR a Contra..

An absolute triumph.

Fantastic

Their debut album was excellent, and in my opinion this one is even better - this time there is a slightly sharper, more electronic edge to the tracks which really works, and the beats are catchier than ever. So good!

Love it

I love this album. It doesn't disappoint. I think it is brilliant and is good for listening to at any time. Sunny day, gaming day. Anything. The African beats hit home as they remind me of family reunions. I listen to it more than I should but it so good to chill with. Good job and good music videos. I listen to it more than the first but both are great :D

Happy sounds

So awesome, white sky, horchata, holiday, giving up the gun and diplomat's son are the best but all their songs are awesome. if you liked the first one, you'll love this one. They're so cool, totally original and with such a happy feel, and not to mention their beats...

definately reccommend, after a listen through or two you're hooked for the next month or so, be warned.

Brilliant Music

Very like Paul Simons' Gracelands..... Same african influence, weird lyrics and interesting rythms. Especially enjoy White Sky. All in all a successful 2nd album.

Sort of a reggae version of Paul Simon meets Death Cab For Cutie?? Although have heard it all before it does grow on you and it is quite catchy (though could be annoying). Wanted to give 3 1/2 but thats not an option. Def worth a listen though.

I Think I Love Contra!

This album is superb! i started liking this group due to song A-Punk, but never got round to buying their debut album, so when this came out and i heard Cousins i knew i had to buy it, and was shocked at the low price! My fave songs are Cousins, Holiday and Giving up the Gun, but below is what i think of all songs and a rating;

HORCHATA = 7/10 great opening track, feel good caribbean type beat that really kicks the album off well

WHITE SKY = 7/10 again upbeat and feel good, great lyrics and just love the beat throughout

HOLIDAY = 9/10 fantastic upbeat song, fave unreleased track off the album perfect to listen to on holiday :)

CALIFORNIA ENGLISH = 7.5/10 strange, unique tune that is a grower

TAXI CAB = 7/10 one of the forgettable tracks, but still great and one of the best based on lyrics

RUN = 8/10 love the beat, another song i think should be released, really feel good also

COUSINS = 9/10 loved the vid for this incredibly funky beat, sounds like a christmas beat near the end - love it

GIVING UP THE GUN = 9/10 an absolute grower, bored me when i first heard it but now i love it - great vid as well

DIPLOMAT'S SON = 8/10 one of the most infectious choruses off the album, funky beat that does make it catchy

I THINK UR A CONTRA = 7/10 an atmospheric tune perfect for some sort of sci-fi film

GIANT = 7.5/10 fantastic bonus track really good song, closes the album nicely

Buy this album if you like music from Temper Trap, La Roux and even the Scissor Sisters! :)

Absolutley Brilliant!

This album is brilliant. It's one of those albums you can listen to all the way through and not just one or two songs. It has a great tempo and rhythm. I bought the album because i like "Giving up the gun" and "cousins" but the whole album is just brilliant. If you like Vampire Weekend's first album, well then this is a must buy! And at this price is even better.

a few good songs but thats it

i had some money to spend so i thought i would buy this album, the songs they released were good but the rest are very wierd! in one of the songs he really high pitched and its stupid! it really computerized in my opinion and its not worth the money.

Catchy, very catchy!

Great album, great songwriting.

Pre ordered this album for when it came out, gave it a listen, enjoyed it but thought it was a step down from their previous album,

Having recently spent a lot of time travelling America, I heard more of the album on the radio and in Hollister, I decided to listen more and, wow. it's a masterpiece. As somebody has previously said here, they could have written an album of A-Punk style songs, but they ventured elsewhere and have come up with this,

congratulations to vampire weekend to keeping to thier music style. they arent going to change. im sure if they wanted to they could rite 20 a- punks but who wud want that we alredi have one. cosins is very catchy. i do think this band have loads more potential. the albums a grower you have to listen to it quite a few tyms before liking it

vampire weekend are my new addiction

Ever since i have put this album on my IPod about two months back i have been a captivated and enthralled one-person audience for the c.d everytime. Saying that i merely love this album is just not enough; i listen to it nearly everyday and each song never seems to get old! Personally my favourite songs include: californian english, i think ur a contra, giving up the gun, horcharta and taxi cab...wait,that's basically the whole album, because i'll have to add in run and cousins...how could i forget that?!! i muchly prefer this album to the first one...i urge you if you haven't already done so, to buy this album now!!! trust me, you wont't reget it ;) <3 ")

A great second album

I loved the first album and was really looking forward to the second. Having listened to it now, I can say it's just as good as the first, excellent tracks being 'Giving up the Gun' and 'Diplomats Son'. I love the vibrance to their music, just makes me want to bounce around the room, I know I will be listening to this all summer :)

Best & only

It is a really original album- a mix of different sounds. Diplomat's Son is good, along with Horchata and White Sky. I Think Ur A Contra has an interesting flow. Taxi Cab and California English are happy songs. Enjoy listening :o)

Give it time, fans of the first album might not like it at first. I didn't but now I can't stop listening to it. Diplomat's Son is a masterpiece. Perfect to listen to as we head into spring.

I have no idea and it is on the edge of being dreadfull; at one point I thought a track was corrupted. HOWEVER it isn't, it is an awsome mashup of styles and rhythms... Blooming great!

Track by Track Review

1. Horchata - Softer music from the brooklyn indie band, with little guitar and a lot of an instrument that sounds like a glockenspiel. 8/10

2. White Sky - A strange song, for MGMT fans as it has that psychedelic feel like the one on Kids. 7/10

3. Holiday - Catchy indie song, the Oxford Comma of this album, very bouncy track. 9/10

4. California English - Ezra uses "Autotune" on this track, and manages to pull it off as it sounds a it distorted. 9/10

5. Taxi Cab - A quiter song with a clear drum beat in the background plus some more glockenspiel. 6/10

6. Run - One of the bouncier tracks on the album, similar to Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. 8/10

7. Cousins - First single off the album and also the A-Punk of Contra. OUTSANDING TRACK! 10/10

8. Giving Up The Gun - A pop song with a distinctive sound and wierd lyrics. 8/10

9. Diplomat's Son - A very interesting violin solo at the beggining, also Ezra sings quieter than on some of the other tracks, more glockenspiel. 6/10

10. I Think Ur A Contra - Title track. Another softer one for the end of the (original) album, a good way to finish the album. 8/10

11. Giant (Bonus Track)[iTunes only] - Another bouncy track very similar to "California English", but still a good track. 6/10

Overall Rating: 8/10 = Very enjoyable.

Brilliant second album from the Vampire Weekend boys! Eagerly anticipated and didn't disappoint from first listen. Bright, fresh and funky, just wish it had arrived sooner! :)

New stuff, different feel, great music

Vampire Weekend are back. To me this album isn't an album full of songs which could be singles. Instead it is an album which flows through with every track offering something new. Horchata is an excellent song as is Diplomat's song and I think UR a Contra. Vampire Weekend have kept the same mellow, distinctive sound to their music and this, more than anything, is why you should buy Contra.
