Strange and quirky but a gem

St Vincent is weird. Let's just put it out there. She has the styling of chamber rock infused with cabaret jazz. Her voice has an amazing range and the guitar solos are so distorted but are brilliant at the same time. Her songs are unsettling at first. It does take at least 2 listens to get into the groove but they are amazing. Stand outs for me are Cruel, Cheerleader, Surgeon and Northern Lights but all the songs are really good. She reminds me of a rock infused Lykke Li with vocals not too dissimilar to Kate Bush.

Exceptional & different

I've always liked music that is challenging and a bit strange/weird, ( in a good way ) but it is very hard to find in these days of manufactured pop and radio friendly drivel.
Strange Mercy and Annie Clark are pure gems, her voice is amazing and her music is unique. It takes a few listens and then the melodies just hook you in and you find yourself humming along to songs like Surgeon, which has got complex musical structures in it.
Buy it immediately to restore your faith in original and beautiful music, I will be buying her back catalogue very soon.

Beautiful and different

An incredible example of an earth-shatteringly pretty album, helped along by Annie Clarks voice, along with surprising, glitchy guitar parts that really propel the album to another level entirely. Cheerleader is a highlight, and goes along with an awesome music video. Only downside is the repetitive natue of some lyrics

Captivating

Introduced to her music by a friend, i absolutely fell in love with both her and her music. She's a genius on guitar, especially on tracks like Northern Lights and Surgeon, letting her rock roots show through. She entwines this with a fantastic electro style creating some dark yet beautiful music!

One of the best from 2011

I must say that it took me a while to "get" St. Vincent's sound as it really is like nothing else I've ever really heard. But after only a few listens I found myself humming along to 'Cruel', the catchiest song on the album, and I haven't managed to find a way to get it out of my head since. The soaring psychedelic synths and Annie Clark's gentle, ethereal vocals contrast with the heavy, industrial grunge guitar melodies to create an insatiably enigmatic and unique sound. Annie is really in her element on this album; her idiosyncratic, bizarre lyrics combined with her incredible guitar playing make each song a trip for the listener.
With standout tracks such as Chloe in the Afternoon, Cruel, Surgeon, Strange Mercy is definitely one of the best albums released last year.
