Not That Difficult Second Album Afterall
'Conditions' was undoubtedly the debut album of the late noughties and the TV theme loyalties alone must have represented a major coup for the band. So three years on the 'difficult second album' loomed high in the thoughts of big Temper Trap fans like myself.
'Conditions' was a big act to follow and so it seemed when I first listened to the pre release samples of 'The Temper Trap' and to a lesser extent the single release 'Need Your Love'. So much so the the album was already heading for my Christmas list.
All that changed on a long drive home when Jo Whiley played 'Trembling Hands'. What a song! Better than anything on 'Conditions' and I bought the album the next day. Unlike it's predecessor, this album is definitely a grower, with some wonderfully crafted songs and the bonus tracks are definitely all worth having. Only 'Rabbit Hole' really harks back to the first album.
I know not every fan wants to hear David Cameron's 'outraged of Chipping Norton' tones on their favourite band's new album, but these tunes are mature song writing at it's best. Not sure 'The Temper Trap' will ennoble so many Premier League goals, but this is a great step forward for one of the worlds most underrated bands!
