I was given the original Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call a year after they were originally released. I wasn’t even a teenager at the time, I couldn’t understand a word being sung, but I played and played them to death. Before Google, trying to work out the lyrics was a challenge in itself. I can only say that this set of songs perfectly reflects the time - the news was very much dominated by the still Cold War and the threat of another one. There is a darkness and a beauty in these songs, and while I became a fan and appreciated their later work, nothing every could beat this set of songs. And the combination of Charlie with Derek Forbes is just astounding - these songs sound as fresh as ever in 2023. Jim Kerr’s voice is inimitable, and the writing is inventive and youthful. Simple Minds at their very, very finest.

Loved Simple Minds since New Gold Dream and Sparkle In The Rain, but never really fancied their earlier productions, so downloaded this when I got my 6 months free Apple Music with ee. All I can say is give it a few listens first, cos it is an absolute gem of an album, stunning! I wish I’d discovered it sooner!

A quintessential album of its era.

No one in the eighties could touch these guys.Melody,atmosphere and sound can’t be beaten.This was them at their pinnacle just before NGD 81 etc etc before the downward spiral in trying to imitate U2 as a stadium band.

If you are ever going to appreciate an album then make sure it’s this one.
