A delight
There's a slight prejudice against composers who are not obviously virtuoso pianists playing their own music, but this rare trio album recorded by Duke in 1953 shows how subtle and interesting he was as a performer, and his versions of tunes that are more familiar in their full big-band arrangements bring out the artful melancholy he was so good at. Reflections in D alone is worth the price of entry, a lovely tune that never became part of the band's repertoire. I've played this album more times than I can count.
