Melodic but still Prog
This was Spock's Beards 4th album, following on the heels of 3 which, while never losing Neal Morse's knack for a great hookline or melody, still erred in the side of huge symphonic epic-ness. On DFN however, he leant more the other way, and while still clearly proggy, it was much more straight-forward in parts than the previous 3, which has meant it has come in for some criticism.
Nevertheless, it is a great album, and although not one of their best, is still strong.
The title track is strong ... Gibberish became a live show-stopper ... Skin is a well crafted single ... and so it goes on. Distance, Crack and Gypsy are all great and make middle of the album very solid. Can't Get It Wrong is a bit of an oddity, being almost ELO-esque, but since I like ELO, that's OK! The final epic "Healing Colours" feels more like a series of wonderful short tracks than a single cohesive unit, but nonetheless, it kinda works well.
Their next album "V" melded the epic-ness of the first 3 with the melody of DFN to be probably one the best Neo-Prog albums of the last decade. So, well worth a listen, with many hidden gems.
