The absolute nostalgia Cornet/Trumpet must have
Conductor/Trumpeter Gerard Schwartz, one-time New York Phil trumpeter, shows himself to be in perfect sympathy for this dying art form: the kind of thing you'd have heard in a bandstand concert in Sousa's day. In fact, several of these solos were written by former Sousa band members, notably the great cornettist Herbert L Clarke. Incredibly musical and staggeringly virtuosic cornet playing by Schwartz, complete with high F's and G's hit bang in the middle of the note. William Bolcolm is a superb accompanist, too. If you like this and you're into real turn of the (19th/20th) century nostalgia, try 'After the Ball', a collection of old-time songs sung by Joan Morris and again accompanied by Bolcolm with brilliance and wit: again an excellent tribute to times gone by, unlikely to be bettered (also available on iTunes).
