The true spirit of Coltrane.
This is really, really good. There is both an intensity and a lyricism here, and an individual voice that pay a more genuine tribute to JC than mere imitation. The instrumentation is all Birchall’s own, and Adam Fairhall takes us in directions that MT would not have done. There is propulsion in his playing of course, but a delicacy as well that adds to the variety of textures. This is full-on modern British jazz which wears its origins proudly on its sleeve, but there is more than whiff of the urgently now about it. We don’t need to look Stateside for jazz that takes you by the scruff of the neck, we do our own thing very well. Buy this.
