There is no doubt, this album is a work of art. The result speaks for itself and I demand it wins at least half a dozen Grammys. Granted, I am biased and think Barbra always sounds great and can do no wrong, but being objective, her vocals on this album are the best in recent years. The production is stunning, the arrangements are beautifully crafted, the orchestra is first class and all the 'partners' are on top form. What Kind Of Fool and Somewhere stand out: they are truly exceptional! You can't really fault any of the duets but there are one or two mismatches. For a start, Evergreen should have been left alone and the lead and backing vocals by Babyface on this track just don't go; his production, on the other hand, is great. So pleased to hear Lost Inside Of You on this collection (one of Barbra's best songs) but Seal, in my view, would have been a much better choice as a duet partner. I'm not sure the duet with Stevie Wonder on People works either; it is more of a curious listen as opposed to the very pleasant surprises of The Way We Were with Lionel Richie and New York State Of Mind with Billy Joel (they both sound great). Although I get why these songs were selected, I guess my slight disappointment is that the choice of songs could have been braver. For instance, I was imagining and hoping for new versions of: Prisoner (from Laura Mars), Love Comes From Unexpected Places (from Streisand Superman), On Rainy Afternoons (from Wet), Life Story (from Guilty), Where Is It Written (from Yentl - those lyrics have to be sung again), A Taste Of Honey (from The Barbra Streisand Album), The Best Thing You've Ever Done (from The Way We Were), Lazy Afternoon (from Lazy Afternoon), Autumn (from People), What Good Is Love (from Pins & Needles), When I Dream (from Emotion), Après Un Reve (from Classical Barbra - that would have been a good duet with Ender Thomas of Yanni fame).... I hope some of these songs are chosen for Partners, Vol. 2 and if the partners to come are women, I would humbly suggest: Sia on Prisoner, Tina Turner on Unexpected Places, Bette Midler on When I Dream, Diana Krall on A Taste Of Honey, Patti Austin on Lazy Afternoon (her cover of this song in the 80s was brilliant), Beyonce on The Best Thing You've Ever Done, Adele on Where Is It Written and what about The Woman In The Moon with Rihanna? Same orchestra, same production. At any rate, in our house, any new Streisand album is a cause for celebration, the two new songs are good (the duet with Andrea Bocelli is probably better as a composition) and the album cover ain't bad either. Last but not least, How Deep Is The Ocean is amazing and if you haven't heard Jason's personal EP you are missing out - Nature Boy and Morning Prayer: breathtaking. Dear Barbra, congratulations on your new album, I hope it receives the success it deserves. Thank you for your gift of music through the years. It is never taken for granted. Now, when you get a chance please a new movie would be very much appreciated.
