Ok, I have listened to this album every day since I bought it last year. Still making my ears hum with all the new sounds I seem to be detecting. True mark of a truly wonderful and great album is that you hear new tones/sounds:music every time you play it. Serious. I cannot put this down. Thanks D,angel. We needed this like a shot in the arm! Beautiful works!!

If you don't like this album you either don't like music or you're just not really listening. Makes me realise how limited most bands/ musicians are. Everything is so perfectly considered and accomplished but so confluent and soulful that every note feels spontaneous. Music that'll outlive its context, same goes for voodoo. D'angelo has that rare talent that transcends the skills.

So i’ve given this album a good few months and heres the verdict. It’s okay..No one is going to give this album to someone who has never heard D’angelo before to start there education on the man. He still doesn’t shake the Prince influence but thats ok. The man takes around a decade to release material so we couldn’t expect this to be stylish and current like Brown Sugar was when it was released. This is more like cruising in your own space kind of music (Sunday morning cleaning tunes). The qualities are there but the songs and feel of the album lack a little sharpness as he mumbles his way through the album. As a fan of D’angelo my initial excitement has fizzled out in the realisation that this was pretty poor on the back of what voodoo promised was to come. No one is going to attempt to cover any of these songs. I’m hoping 2020 somethings album will be a classic. 3 and a half stars, average

Can’t stop listening to this gem of an album. It’s got a good feel to it too - jazzy, bluesy and funky.

Make sure you’re listening to this on good headphones -the apple earphones just won’t cut it.

Sorry people; just not feeling’ this one - gone a completely different direction to past albums!

This album has been played daily since I got it.I was lucky to see him play it live on Wednesday night.Honestly as a performer no one can beat him but prince.

It has been a long wait, but boy am i glad D'angelo finally gave us another album. Love that it is different, but retains the soul and spirit of the artist. Love that this album has made me fall in love with and need to research the other musicians on this album, including the wonderful Kendra Foster. Love love love!

This music hits it on all levels. I remember how disappointed I felt with Voodoo on first listen. It took me 12 years to realise what I was missing, which I see as a blessing now as it feels like he's never been away. Such a talent. And so glad he's back. I'm sure (and hope) we won't be waiting nearly 15 years for a fourth. Enjoy ✌

I only really like three songs from the album which is a shame as I really wanted to like it. Im a huge fan I love the first two albums but this is just ok.

20 years ago this man diverted my attention away from grunge and standard hip hop when r and b was a dirty word. With brown sugar, which was amazing. This album reminds me of the best of prince and all the soul classics. Quest love wasn't joking when he said this man is the saviour of r and b, like when it was good, bb king, jl hooker, you know the rest.he fluctuated between laying bare to the music and dominating it. He's an understated genius. My favourite album of 2014. Thank god talent like this exists. And thanks to d'angelo and his brilliant band the vanguards. On loop in my house. Multi layered, non stop brilliance. You get the point.

I've been waiting for years for this man to return to music and he is finally here! Every track has re-ignited my love for the genre! D'Angelo will always be the king of what he does and with this album he comes back to his former glory! Welcome back, D'Angelo! Welcome back!

I have listened to this album on repeat for about an hour and I have mixed feelings, on one hand it sounds over produced, too many layers, such that you struggle to here what he has to say, on the other hand there is an album trying to get out!

I can't help and wonder if everyone would have been so positive about this album if it had been released 10 months after VODOO!

Look it is great that a man with more talent in his finger nail than Oli Murs is back even if this album does not hit the spot.

Finally some real music. Artists and record labels to caught up in making money...... D'Angelo comes back and reminds us and them that QUALITY music can be made first and foremost. God has blessed D'Angelo!

Absolute masterpiece. I was starting to lose faith that this record would ever come out. Then this week it just appeared - and I haven't listened to another record for the last five days!! I wish some of the songs were longer, but that's what the repeat button is for :)

D'Angelo just turned 2014 upside down. Did any other records come out this year? I can't remember...

Let's be honest D'Angelo's album is a bit overrated. I think the 14 year wait makes it feel better. It's monotonous at some points.

I mean in comparison to the crap in the charts D'Angelo's album is refreshing but there's only a few stand out tracks here for me. His album has a lot of album fillers. He should have road tested the a album fillers. The ones he performed live banged. Certified. As far as musicality goes D'Angelo will forever be that guy! Till it's done (Tutu) on D'Angelo's album really stands out for me. It's incredible!

I bought this album on iTunes earlier today, and musically it's great, but the mix for iTunes is absolutely awful. I'm currently sat listening to a mates copy that he's downloaded from Amazon and its a different class. The iTunes mix is middly, boxy, and with no highs whatsoever. The Amazon mix sounds great. What's going on!?!?!?

Before I start going on about how brilliant this album is, I must say that I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED on the production of this album.

D'Angelo is a fine vocalist but his vocals fade into the background and sound awfully distorted. There is hardly any definition on his vocals and I had to look up his lyrics on line just so I knew what he was talking about.

VOCALLY this album is a real let down and I don't know if anyone else has found this.

LYRICALLY however, D'Angelo is still a masterful poet and storyteller.

MUSICALLY, D'Angelo is still a god. He still has that raw nu soul jazzy vibe, which you would very much expect of the creator, inventor of the genre but D'Angelo has also got supremely funky. He once stated Prince as one of his musical heroes and influences and he serves us up with some fine P-Funk on this much awaited project. He also fuses other genres like rock and blues which weren't so prominent in Brown Sugar and Voodoo.

There are a few standout tracks.

2) Betray My Heart

3) Another Life

4) Back To The Future

5) Ain't That Easy

The other 7 are also genius conceptions but fail to deliver on very poor production!

Simply brilliant

When I was 20, I spent all my money on albums, usually imports from HMV. Sometimes you got an album which was like magic in your ears. Examples would be "Voodoo", "Who is Jill Scott?", "Baduizm"....I only waited 14 years to get that feeling again! Thank you! Worth it!

Being a huge fan of D'angelo back in the day I was so excited to finally get my hands on his new album, unfortunately I don't get it. It feels messy, disjointed and each track never really gets going....I'm bitterly disappointed
