I’ve been using the app for around a year and I’ve collected loads of items from my local town. Extremely easy to use and everyone who I’ve collected from have been superb people

I’ve been on this app a while now, I first started just collecting food from others who get it from supermarkets or sandwich shops etc, BUT a few weeks ago I signed up to start collecting & become a food waste hero!! At first I got items from a sandwich shop, but to be honest I didn’t get along doing that one & gave it up, now I just collect from a supermarket (Tesco’s) & it’s the best thing I’ve ever done! I go once a week (Saturday) & get there early ish & go around with a trolly & put in anything that is reduced (only items that are going out of date not everything that they reduce ie household items etc) I then once the trolly is full or nothing else left that’s going out of date etc, I then get the person who’s in charge on that section that night to put it in the chiller out the back & then go & do my own shopping or sit in the cafe etc & then go back get the trolly & the person in charge will scan all the items & then I go home with it, then I separate all of it, photograph it in bundles, like all fruit item’s in 1 bundle, all bread in another or vegetables in another etc, then I list it for people to come to my home to collect it!! It’s amazing & nothing goes to waste, my items are normally gone in seconds Even though I’ve only just started it, I get to have 10% of what I collect to keep for myself so it saves me & my family money on shopping & it’s helped not only just myself & my family but also others who collect from me, I wish this app was invented years ago!! Not only does it save food waste BUT there’s so many people out there sadly who don’t have much money & cant eat every day because they can’t afford to, so it’s amazing, I actually enjoy doing it, it’s something I get to do with my partner which helps her to get out the house because she’s disabled she don’t go out much & also we include our kids too & they get to see how many people we can help thanks to this amazing app & the amazing supermarkets & shops that take part in this amazing idea, no one has to go hungry with this app, I always tell people about it at every opportunity I get, also even though we collect once a week there are still days where we will collect off others who do the same thing by collecting from a different supermarket & it helps us as we’ve got a big family & don’t have/get much money but if we get given too much we then give some to other family members or friends & even make sandwich’s or good for homeless people who are extremely thankful for it, goes to show how much doing something like this can help the less fortunate people out there & u don’t need money to do it, it doesn’t take much to reach out your hand to help someone else up! Rather than just keep walking past & trying to ignore the problems in our society, ever person we’ve helped doing this have always been so appreciative of it, & like I said it helps me & my family also, I can’t give this 100 stars because if I could do that I would, the person who is behind this app is truly an amazing person, no matter what there original intentions were behind stating this movement in the first place was it’s helped many people, it’s not just about not wasting food even though it’s a bit of a crime to just waste food when there’s millions of people who don’t get the luxury of a meal every day, it’s about the people who would of normally gone hungry if it wasn’t for this app, like I said I can’t praise this app enough, it should be the best app on the App Store!! Please, please, please get this app & start helping to save food waste BUT above all, start helping your fellow human being by making sure no one especially children go hungry tonight where ever u live in the United Kingdom!! 🇬🇧 😊
I have just started using this and it's a great way to pass on your unwanted good food to others. Only issue is that the app says there are unread messages when there aren't. Not a big issue but a bit distracting.
I used olio for a number of months with no problem, picked up a few free plants, etc. However, one day I decided to pick up a sandwich from pret from a woman who I often saw listed items on the app and had a high rating. Upon finally reaching her front door there was an overwhelming stench emanating from her flat. It was so bad that it even stuck to the plastic packaging of the sandwich. The sandwich inside smelt fine, but I didn’t want to risk eating it after the overwhelming smell that somehow managed to stick to PLASTIC . I had to delete the app after that. Great idea and concept for an app, but in reality you really don’t know who you are dealing with and how the food is stored. Can’t face downloading this app again after thinking what that smell may have been coming from ....
Super needed ! Easy to use too, reduce your waste and get rid of stuff you no longer need
This is a great app and helps each of us make a small difference, which all adds up to a big difference. The people I’ve interacted with so far have been incredibly friendly and responsive. I’m telling all my friends about Olio!
Why waste food when you can share it, or pick up someone else’s spare goods? It’s a win all round. As the number of users grows this app increases in its effectiveness. There are now lots of Olio-ers in my provincial town so I can often walk to pick up items.
Couldn’t be easier to use. No more wasting + mostly the food goes to people who really need it. Helps biost the community feeling too although not quite enough users in my area for this to happen yet.
Love the concept, absolutely needed and really great. Saved so much from going to waste. Having some issues lately, no notifications are coming through for new items or messages.
I’ve had a few things off this app, Food waste is awful and it’s nice that our community can help each other out! 👍🏻😃
IN-LOVE with this app, it’s just perfect 🤗
The idea is really great. But the app itself is very buggy. For the past month I can’t get any notifications anymore and have to rely on emails which is super inconvenient.
Very valuable app. Reduces food waste. Helps people in need. Kudos all round
This is an app and a group at large that addresses the problem of food waste in an impeccable manner. Totally recommend!
Great app which, so far, has always worked for me. You can offer food or items, which will be picked up, and/ or you can ask to collect food which sometimes has been collected from supermarkets by wonderful volunteers.
I particularly like the built-in fairness system which prevents greedy people getting all the goodies!
I’m always telling people about Olio. Such a great concept to reduce waste. You’re happy because someone comes to pick up stuff you don’t want/need and that person is happy because they got something for free! Wish more people around me used it. Will keep spreading the word. I even got some nearly new trainers on Olio the other week!
Double win! Love this app and the community it empowers.
I always use Olio when I can rather than freecycle nowadays. All my experiences either giving or receiving have been very positive. It’s a growing community.
Brilliant to save food from the bin and share with neighbours!
I love this app and have given away so much food that I would have just binned before. It’s great to know my food is going to people who will actually use it!
Great app and picking up food that would be wasted has really helped me feed the family on a low budget through Ill health. However, our local food heroes are more than happy for me to take veg, bread etc that they are on the verge of throwing away, they are told we have to request on each individual listing. One pickup, taking food nobody else has requested and I have to request in retrospect can mean I am penalised for a week from seeing listings when they are listed. Very unfair to those of us trying to help by taking some extra things that would otherwise go in the bin.
Love the concept of this, helping reduce food waste and also saving people money. I’ve used the app several times with a few different Food rescuers. I recommend it to everyone!!
I love the idea of reducing food waste and saving things from landfill which are still good to eat/use. The app is easy to use and I use it both to list items and to collect things which I can use/recycle. Fabulous idea!
I have only ever had a great experience with this app! I have managed to get some great items and everyone that I have met has been lovely.
A great way to start engaging with waste free living! x
This has to be one of the best ideas ever the only problem is that in my area there are very few users. I have gained and given via this app. Love it!
Olio is a great resource for sharing unwanted food and non-food items. I’ve found homes for a number of non-food items during decluttering. I feel good that I’ve been able to recycle items and the recipients are happy to have found useful items for free.
A simple app, takes a little while to get used to its limitations and idiosyncrasies, but it genuinely helps users to avoid wasting edible food and useful stuff with minimal fuss. It’s quick to list items, and I have decluttered without guilt. It’s ttue that one person’s trash really is another person’s treasure. You can easily skim through the list of what’s available near you to be collected: and all for free! I enjoy seeing something listed and thinking “I could use that”. You need to be quick because some things are snapped up fast!
I love giving away food that will otherwise go in the bin, and have also received food that would have gone in someone else’s bin! It’s really easy to use - strongly recommend.
The ultimate feel good app - saving waste and helping the community. You get to meet lots of lovely people and do your bit
I love this app as we saved a lot of stuff from going in the bin especially food
The solely idea of sharing surplus food is great. The app works pretty much ok all the time. I live in London where any food can be more than expensive, and the app has helped me to resist and save money.
What is more important, is that the app works THANKS to the AMAZING food heroes that put a gigantic effort to collect the food, deal with tons of messages and distributing the food.
This app had really helped me and i couldn’t recommend it enough, a great way to share and reduce food going to waste
Absolutely brilliant app , great community spirit , nice to see so many wonderful people helping out others!! I’ve collected some great items & met some lovely people. Highly recommend Olio! x
I was struggling so much an Olio has saved me in turn environmentally I’m preventing food waste. Finding new ways to make sure I don’t waste my food and meeting new people who share the same thoughts as I do.
A must have app for everyone in 2020. An ingenious idea.
Great app, love it.
I joined olio to get rid of non food items as don’t live near a charity shop. But its been so much more of a faff than it should’ve been. One item I put on someone said they would collect then never got back to me and this then happened 3 more times... Its like when people ghost you on dating apps. I don’t have the time or energy to riffle through messages and pick who gets it. What a waste of my time!
I live in an urban area with enough users and FWH that means I get to collect food waste at least twice a week and that allows me to save at least £20 a month on ready to eat food that I can take as packed lunches to work.
On top of that I’ve managed to clear out my makeup and kitchen cupboard of things that charity shops would not take.
I understand that each person’s olio experience differs depending on their location but I am happy with mine.
Only thing I don’t necessarily agree with is the ban I get when I have collected too many items in a week. I believe this should be offset by the amount I give too. I haven’t been able to get as much food in the last couple of weeks as it only shows up on my feed 10 minutes after everyone else’s.
The interface could be improved. Specially if you’re giving away multiple items. There should be an option to add a private note to a listing saying for example who is picking up what at what time. Just to keep yourself organised. I find myself having to do many written lists.
I’ve found this brilliant...both for taking unwanted food especially fruit and veg which I can turn into great meals and freeze plus offering all sorts of items I no longer have use for and excess items ... love it
So I took time out of my day to download this app. Let’s put it this way it does not let me get past the signup page app needs fixing! Overall great idea helps many people cuts food waste down please fix your app.
Based on my experience I am forced to give this app 1 star.
As soon as you fire up the app you have to register and login, no preview or demo available.
Good but it doesn’t mark taken items.
If I can’t list my item as taken, I will continue to receive messages, if I do not reply to these messages, then my rating will go down and I will appear to be an untrustworthy user.
This means I waste time replying to messages, other people waste time sending messages to me and will all waste time scrolling through items that are gone or taken.
Not to mention all the time spent trying to find the option of marking as taken, help pages, forum, emails to support.
It’s an expected function. They really need to fix this.
All in all we love Olio. Ok sometimes the app has a bit of a glitch but the concept and aim overrides these little problems. I use it all the time and have picked up some absolutely gems for free. It is also amazing to help de clutter and get rid of things that other people might want! Keep going Olio and food waste heroes!
Bit crap ngl. Barely works. Just says failed to open.
Good app. It allowed me to get things like free sandwiches from pret but also non food like a new gym armband for my phone.
I don’t mind the few adds on it because its all free
Generally his app is pretty good but I just uninstalled it because it asks for my password too frequently in order to access anything. None of the other apps I’ve used do this (excluding banking apps). It kept sending me notifications which I’m not allowed to see without entering the password which I can’t be bothered to reset for the nth time.
This is a great idea and the more it takes off in a local area the better it gets. The app leaves something to be desired though as it is not totally intuitive and has glitches such as the notifications not updating very efficiently. But it has successfully enabled me to give away and collect items of food and non food in my first week of using
BUT new version won’t let me sign in 😖
Homepage gets spammed with paid adverts, it’s just a crap system overall, finally managed to delete my account, I’d just recommend people avoid and post your bits on Facebook locally
