The app and website work well, are continually updated, and very slick. The YNAB budget logic is a bit unorthodox, and can’t really produce a clear expenditure vs budget report (as it requires you to continually revise your budget to match actual expenditure) but is clearly explained and will work particularly well for people carrying credit card debt from month to month. My one real complaint is the support for direct import from UK accounts. This has actually declined over time, rather than improving, with support for HSBC and AmEx UK both being withdrawn over the past year or so. They haven’t really updated their advertising to reflect this gap.

You’ve Never Budgeted Like This Before
YNAB is unlike any personal finance app, expense tracker, or money management system you’ve tried before—because it works. The powerful combination of award-winning apps and a proven method—YNAB’s Four Rules—has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people by teaching them to get control of their finances, stop stressing, and live the life they want to live.
A Proven Method—YNAB’s Four Rules
Rule One: Give Every Dollar A Job | Be intentional about what you want your money to do before you spend it.
Rule Two: Embrace Your True Expenses | Break up larger, less frequent expenses into smaller, manageable amounts. By saving monthly for insurance premiums, holidays, or car repairs, when the time comes, your money is ready and waiting to do its job.
Rule Three: Roll With The Punches | When life changes, so must your budget. Make adjustments and move along. Flexible budgets succeed because they’re guilt-free, realistic, and sustainable.
Rule Four: Age Your Money | As you repeat the first three rules, you’ll increase the time between earning a dollar and the moment you need to spend it. When your money is at least a month old, you’ll have finally broken the paycheck to paycheck cycle for good.

What's New in Version 2.7.1
What’s New in v2.7.1
• You can now switch between budgets on offline devices. Since you're offline, you're limited to switching between budgets you've opened previously on that device.
• We’re less annoying when it comes to asking you to rate the app. Kindly take that into consideration.
• The account register got a nice little performance boost.
• We only show the credit spending bar graph on the credit card payment inspector if there’s been credit spending since the last payment. It quiets things down visually.
• New cash transactions are now cleared by default. That brings mobile in line with web’s existing behavior.
• We simplified the account editing flow.
• The app badge number could disappear if the app hadn’t been opened for a bit. Our original fix of “open the app more often” didn’t seem to catch on, so we fixed it for real.

I’ve been with them for a couple of years now and direct imports regularly stop working and you won’t get any notification unless you go to the account page of the app.
They then have no ability to tell you how much time it wasn’t importing transactions for or how many were missed.
I’ve talked to multiple people in support about this who have all just said that actually I should be manually adding transactions anyway so this is actually a good thing. They’re all convinced this is a feature and not a giant glaring bug in their system.
I’ve been hoping they might fix it but at this point I’ve given up. It’s a real shame, YNAB has everything I want from a budgeting app except that it doesn’t actually work!
I’ve also had many issues with their system stuffing up my credit card budgeting, regularly telling me that I haven’t budgeted enough/budgeted too much for my credit card despite the fact I just budget for every transaction and it’s meant to transfer that budget to the card payment category for you.
Looks well polished but for £75 a year I expect support for major UK banks.
I’ve been using YNAB for over six months now, and the biggest thing it does is it changes your behaviour. I feel like I finally have total control over my money. No matter how much you earn, it helps you prioritise what is really important to you, and spend the money accordingly, and stop living paycheque to paycheque.
At first I worried it would be stifling, but after about 2 weeks of getting my head around it, it all fell into place. Do watch the Whiteboard Wednesdays on YouTube, they help getting the concept. Don’t even think about it, just do it!!!
Every time I use YNAB I cry and wonder why I didn’t start using it years ago!
I’ve been on YNAB for 3 months and have already saved £3,000 and feel more in control of my money than ever before in my adult life. I didn’t realise how much money I was wasting. Hoping to be debt free by the end of the year. Well worth the subscription.
I have used the web version of YNAB for years. I seriously wondered how useful the app would be. It is fantastic. It makes budgeting even easier and makes it so straightforward to track my spending and keep track of my outgoings. I can highly recommend this app, and YNAB in general.
There is no support for Open Banking and no support for Barclays, Halifax or Starling. The iOS app does not support import of exported accounts via QiF or CSV so there is literally only manual entry, by the Pennies app if you want to manually add transactions. They have is stated they have no plans to support Open Banking in the UK, this needs to change if they sell the app here. They also stated that as they do not support open banking in the UK you can trust them with your sort code and account number and to refer to their security policy. This is truly worrying as they are a US company that do not adhere to a Privacy Shield agreement and thus you forfeit all legal rights under GDPR. I will not trust them with my data but it doesn’t really matter as the app doesn’t work.
I would re-subscribe when gets uk banks open banking. I cancelled my subscription and am using Yolt for now.
I’ve been using YNAB for 5 years. I can’t imagine life without it. I have cleared out all my debt (except my mortgage) have a buffer and feel financially secure.
Brilliant app. Completely changed my view and control over budgeting and expenses. No more money stress / worries.
If you want to take control of your finances get the trial and get stuck into the trainings provided. It’s freaking life changing.
Been using this for a year. Love it.
Used for nearly 7 years with my wife. Has likely saved us a small fortune and sanity!
The budgeting system is fantastic and works well on a mobile platform. Regular feature updates keeps app this on top. Essential.
If I had used the app years ago it would have made my life simpler and happier. I feel in charge of our finances now - essential for a happy life on a pension.
YNAB transformed my attitude to my finances. Previously my budgeting was retrospective, achieved by reconciling bank statements with receipts at the end of the month, which was an unpleasant and unproductive task. YNAB encourages me to plan my expenditure for the future, and to arrange categories for future expenditure. Now I have the money in place when the bill arrives. Financial harmony has induced relationship harmony.
I first started using YNAB when I was earning three times as much as I do now.
By using the app effectively and following their sound advice I feel much more in control of my money. In fact, I now budget for every eventuality so much more effectively that I have more savings and more disposable income! YNAB teach you the importance of maintaining a buffer of 30 days’ money in order to be prepredfor surprises...I now sit on 88 days’ money.
I have used YNAB for years in the past as the app (mac) and method were good and effective. I have trialed the new version and feel that it is even better. Support materials a very good
I very much recommend the process, functionality and what it all helps you achieve.
I have 2 gripes that detract from a possible 5 star rating
1). The horrendous cost. I have for the last year used an alternative app that whilst not as clear and simple provides a lot more functionality for less money (even with the pawltry 10% discount you get having been a user of YNAB 4 for many years) as a one off rather than annual subscription. It just feels like YNAB have got too greedy. Just because an app helps you get control of your money doesn’t give licence to just take a big slice of the savings
2) All data is stored in a YNAB server. There are assurances that it is all safe but I would rather have it local or even on apples icloud. Obviously in the US there is 100% internet availability and coverage ;). Certainly is not the case in the uk
Support for uk banks is also not great
So ... go for it if you are happy with the above then I definitely recommend the product
For me.. I’ll carry on with the alternative that I am currently using until the 2 points above are addressed (which I doubt they ever will be)
This app is truly excellent. It will transform the way you use your money, so long as you stick to your priorities!
I have been using this app for 2 years, and it’s transformed my finances. I use it for budgeting, and equally importantly, it produces profit and loss reports, so your taxes are easy. All the categories are totalled and ready to input into the year end tax forms. I saved a ton on book keepers for my business this way, AND I know exactly where my money is going.
I use the desktop and mobile version daily and never had a problem. I have 12 accounts on there—savings, checking, credit, mortgage, etc. I live in the UK so I drag and drop my monthly (or can do it daily if you want) bank statements in and then it alerts me to any discrepancies. Easily sorted after that.
Highly recommended. Haven’t found anything it can’t do yet. Possibly multiple currencies, but all my money goes through the UK via other countries so okay there.
Wish this had been around when I started to look for money management programmes 40 years ago. Brilliant concept and easy to use
The reviews looked promising and I thought worth a punt, but two things happened:
1) the 1 month free trial already debited £2.99
2) first step (as per the video) to set up an account failed to work ( no Wi-fi connection message, which is just false).
So I just spent money under false pretences, not a great start to my objective of setting up an easy to use expense tracker....
I’ll persevere and if all comes good gladly update the review but at this point in time I feel like I was just mugged.
I’m so much better off financially using the YNAB system to budget my finances.
It has fundamentally changed our ability to budget and manage money.
Doesn’t support linking accounts in the UK, so transactions have to be manually entered. Would have been good if this was mentioned on the app description page so I didn’t have to install to find this out.
Used this for a couple of years now. Budget monthly for the subscription fee but more than worth it to keep on track of the finances. Recommended this to numerous people now.
I had been using other apps to track my spending but had never budgeted like this!
YNAB allows you to get complete understanding of where you money is going and give it jobs .. You decide what the jobs are from bills that must be paid, savings.. pay off cards .. whatever it is set it up.. set budgets and goals and off you go!
I don’t have linked accounts being in the UK but don’t find that an issue as you can set recurring payments for your debits and enter as you go .. it works extremely smoothly .. Suddenly we have money (we don’t have more income) but we are prioritising smartly.. In January we already have a budget and a goal for next Christmas. Instead of managing outgoings reactively you can be be proactive .. It is a complete sea change in our money management .. To say I am a happy customer would be an understatement !
Just love the way YNAB instils the idea of knowing where your money is going and encouraging conscious decisions before overspending. It is a tremendous tool to get spending under control and helping you keep them there resulting in no more surprises that impact your ability to step up and will, if you choose, lead to savings.
Great app - but needs updating for 2018 iPad Pro’s and it’s flabbergasting that there is still no option to add a pin code/FaceID/TouchID.
The app does everything I need it to and isn’t too complicated to use either. Better than yoga at keeping me calm and relaxed.
Can’t highly recommend YNAB enough, if you have come to a point where you are willing to get your finances in order then this is the solution. It’s not a budget like you’ve budgeted before. It’s a roll with the punches, give every dollar a job kinda system.
Check their YouTube videos out and website to understand it better than I can write!
YNABER from Oct 2017 (when I started)
Between the app itself and the support behind it, it has changed my life in under three months.
Helped me saving money, a task I was completely useless in the past!
YNAB as a programme has been truly life changing. Cannot recommend enough.
A few changes to the app would could increase functionality, currently it is still pretty good. Would love to see a today widget available for quick add transactions and potentially showing selected category balances.
This app needs to be used in combination with the 4 steps discussed on it’s website.
But when you do, ...Wow!! 😳
I already used to budget before using this app. So bills were paid. However, I just could never get any real savings, I was always going into overdraft at the end of the month, and any emergency would always mean reaching for more debt.
I have been using the YNAB app and YNAB method for a bit over a year now, and my bank balance is at a level I previous would have thought unbelievable.
But I have been able to buy much more of the useful things that I normally never get round to. (New suits for work, breadmaker, slow cooker, etc.)
If you ask where I have cut back, I really don’t know! Because it doesn’t feel like a struggle or a pinch. In fact, it feels like I have more money for the things I really want! By next month, I’d have paid off all my credit card debt and will start focusing on my big personal loan!
You probably think I sound like a rabid fanboy. You’re right, I am!
But I wasn’t when I first got the app (on a friends recommendation).
It only took seeing my bank balance after two months, to turn me from mildly curious😒, to rabid fanboy!! 🤩🤩🥳🤓
Becoming a YNAB-er and adopting the 4 rules completely changed my financial life. I sing its praises and have converted many people over the years.
The last few updates on the app have really improved the overall experience. Here’s what I desperately want to see on the next update:
1. Open with TouchID/FaceID. I can’t stress how important this is, especially when other people borrow your phone to “browse the web”.
2. Towards end of the month, YNAB annoyingly automatically moves any unspent money to next month (before the month has even ended). I want to see what I saved by spending smartly over the month and I want it left in “To Be Budgeted (in Green). And then I want to decide where to budget that saving.
3. I have a complex budget. And I have a number of account (mixture of bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards). One day I did a tally to add up what I had budgeted, and a total of what was actually in all the accounts (as shown on the left side of the web app), and I realised that the true balance was off by a few pounds. I want YNAB to smartly analyse my details and tell me if something is not quite right.
Sort #1 out and I will change it to 5 stars immediately.
The UK has had open banking since January, and still, direct import is not available for UK customers. Making this available should be a top priority for YNAB, in order to retain their UK customers, who right now feel completely neglected and ripped off, as they are paying the same amount as US/Canada customers, for a much lesser service. If they still can’t be bothered to implement it, at the very least, they should offer UK customers a discount, instead of shamefully charging them the same so they can fund direct import features for other countries. YNAB forums are filled with others who are disappointed in this, and it is increasingly obvious that UK customers have had enough of this situation and are moving to other apps at a rapid rate.
YNAB used to be huge, but until they add the ability for you to automatically import spending then it will always feel outdated.
Forget YNAB and get Monzo.
I first used YNAB about 5 years ago as a desktop version with mobile sync via Dropbox. We did so well using it that we were able to save and pay cash for a garage conversion into an office, about 10k worth of work. Then for some reason we stopped using it which was the worse thing we could have done. Since then our spending got out of control, we regularly had more month left than we had cash, meaning the credit card bailed us out until the next pay day. Started using it again this month and already we are seeing a massive difference again.
This app is great for sorting you out and getting your priorities straight for your cash. Just this month alone we have put away 700 for a holiday at the end of the month, paid 500 towards paying off a loan, paid 300 towards a ski trip, put 200 into an emergency budget, put 500 towards Xmas and there is still money left over to meet our true expenses. In short, this app is just what you need to get your money sorted and get yourself into a great position where money is not a concern and causes you less stress.
The app / service looks great but is really hobbled in the UK by lack of sync. More frustratingly, you can't know if your institution is supported until you sign up and get far into the process. Would consider the app / service without sync but not at the yearly price of £74 - that's a lot of money for a very manual budgeting app.
I have been using YNAB for a few years now. I am trying to now use mainly the Ipad app and while the app is very good, the lack of transaction search forces me to go back to accessing via the website. This is a very important feature as I often like to compare a transaction quickly vs other similar ones.
This isn't a banking app, it's a budgeting system - you check the app before you spend, then input it into the app not the other way round
Once you get the hang of this concept, it's a life saver - I've not been in debt since I started using YNAB over 11 years ago and I don't live some monk lifestyle, though it did take me a few years to get to the living on the previous month's salary
Fantastic app, easy to use. I’ve tired several and this app has helped me finally get to grips with my debt. This system is very efficient especially the goals feature.
As promised, optimised now for iPhone C - nice!)
Would be great if you could add a feature to import transactions (qif or csv) in the app. These days we do have Dropbox, Files and other apps that used to store files, so it should be possible to integrate importing from those 😄
This service is worth every penny. You get back a lot for what you pay for. Helps a lot with personal accounting, to save money and plan a lot ahead!
Will give 5 stars when app will be updated for iPhone X screen 😄
I have a history of ‘being bad with money’ and have tried created fancy spreadsheets which just end up being too onerous to maintain. This app does everything I was trying to do and more and it’s easy (and even fun!) to update! I now feel in control of my money (although still away to go) and the support is fantastic with the online help and also the great webinars. I also love jesse’s YouTube videos and podcasts. I’ve been telling all my friends about it - you don’t regret it!
The new calculator keypad is so annoying as it’s all in the centre of the screen. We should have an option to have it, or just have a normal keypad as I know I personally will never use the calculator function.
Also the website has so many more reporting graphs and abilities, the app is useless compared to the website. You only get two graphs, age of money and net worth. Why can’t we have the full reports on the app?!
Love this app
Keeps crashing.. can't even get the app to start. It said your free trial will end on the 28th of April then you'll be charged yearly subscription through itunes account. It better not charge me..i don't want the app.
Everything can be done through excel... long live excel!
Needs uk bank import support; get on it guys, your behind the crowd!!
Needs to stop considering payments to off budget accounts as expenses! This is infuriating!!! If I’m paying to a savings account every month I don’t consider it an expense as it isn’t!!
Two fixes and this app would be great.
