Description
Warblr is an app that automatically recognises birds by their song. The way in which it works is simple – make a recording with your iPhone, and Warblr will identify the species of bird/s that can be found in that recording, providing you with images and descriptions to help you learn more about our feathered friends.
In using Warblr, you will be contributing to a citizen science project, and hopefully one day helping to protect endangered species. We will be making the recordings and the data collected on species identification freely available to be used for research and conservation.
Warblr can recognise over 220 species of British bird, and works particularly well for garden and woodland species. Our technology uses the latest techniques in machine learning, and is supported by Queen Mary University of London.

Some reviews from a few years ago suggest this might not work but I gave it a go regardless and was pleasantly surprised to see the issues are resolved
I got a very quick and accurate identification of some local starlings nesting in nearby trees — can’t wait to use it more to identify birds while out and about.
Design is a tad outdated which is the only reason for 4 stars rather than 5. Works great though

Sadly it just doesn’t work. You can record silence indoors and it’ll tell you it’s 45% sure it heard a chaffinch. Therefore there’s little reason to trust it when you do record real birdsong, which has also produced very wrong results for me.

I purchased this app in Jan 2020. From the start I kept getting the message ‘ You have no internet connection’ which was untrue. After 6 months I asked Warblr about it and they said it was a problem with their server which they are endeavouring to correct. One year on and the app still does not function for me. Save your money and use Birdnet, which is free and has an impressive bird-identification success rate.

This app is a complete waste of time! What is the point of having an app that records birdsong but won’t let you listen back and identify what it is because you’re not connected to the internet? Well I am! 4g to be precise! Then again I doubt it would make any difference anyway, because no matter what bird I record the same ones come up every time, clearly not the one I’ve recorded! Don’t waste your time downloading this..it’s a waste of time and energy..sorry!

This app is so disappointing. Every time I use it, I get a list of birds with “possible” matches. It’s very likely to have been a robin, starling or thrush but none of those even come up!!! Then I have to pick which random one I think it’s likely to be. If I knew which bird it was, I wouldn’t have bought this app!!! If has been an app that I could have tried first, I wouldn’t have bought it.

My partner has a bird song identification app: it identifies all the birds singing and lists them. I bought this app thinking it might be even better. No. It is awful- a complete waste of money. Every time I recorded, my result was topped by blackbird, followed by five birds that I guarantee are not present on a farm in Wales. Furthermore, even I could tell that the bird songs I recorded were totally different and could not ALL be blackbirds.
Disappointing - sorry, but I do not recommend.

Having recently bought Warblr I can no longer use it as it is stuck on bird details, which there is no way back from. Having identified a list of possible birds on the screen I tapped one to find out more about it. The details were very interesting but there is no way back, no arrow, no “ back” symbol, and I can’t now resume use of the App. It is extremely frustrating, tapping, double tapping has no effect. I tried coming out of the App but when I tried it again... back to the bird details it is stuck on. A total waste of money.

This app is a great idea - shazam for bird calls - and will surely improve as the training data builds up. Currently a bit prone to saying things are chaffinches :-) but even in it’s current less-than-100%-reliable state it is already useful as it gives a list of guesses with %. I’ll try to report if I can see the bird, and I’m sure that will improve the consistency of results over time.

You always needed a good, strong and clear birdsong for this app to accurately identify a bird, but now it’s useless because it just says there’s no internet connection when there clearly is a good one. I see from another review that this has been a problem before, has been fixed, but is a problem again.

I really wanted this app to work, but sadly I am one of the many it seems who merely gets a message repeatedly saying I have no internet connection, which is not correct. I waited a while to write this review because I had sent an email to the developers asking for help but, two weeks later, I have yet to receive a reply, so I’m not only disappointed that the app doesn’t work for me, but also disappointed with the developer’s customer service.
UPDATE: I have since been contacted by the developer’s support team with profuse apologies. They had a server problem, which is now fixed and my app works, although I haven’t yet tried it out.

I received an email from the Warblr team this morning citing server issues for the poor past performance. I’ve just tried the app and it appears to be fixed. Having given it a few goes, it seems accurate too, and even picked up a greater spotted woodpecker that I couldn’t actually hear, but occasionally visits our garden so we know it’s local. Thanks for the comm, team and I’m glad the issues are resolved.

Warblr is utterly, utterly useless. Complete joke. I have used it many times when out, identifies everything as chaffinch/blackbird/collared dove. Thought I would try out using unmistakable bird song recorded on YouTube (with no other birdsong in background). EG A cuckoo - unmistakable, right? Wrong!!! The answer was - Collared Dove 😡.

This is a pretty good app and easy to use. It records 10 seconds of bird dong and then tells you what it was. Interesting and fun to take on a walk, and helps you learn about birds too.
Customer services great too, and replied to my query with a full answer. I’d say def contact them if you have any problems.

Luckily in the end after a long search on google I was able to find out the bird song I recorded was a Yellowhammer!
I was at home connected to my WiFi - I use my smart tv with no issues on the WiFi but the app kept stating no internet was connected tried to use 4G data.. still the same so I was not able to use the app to identify the bird.

I have been using this app for about six months now and I found it very good for recognizing the birds that are in my garden are flying around the coast that I live on. As I am visually impaired and I’m unable to identify the birds by signs a way of recognizing the Birdsong and putting it on a screen for me is absolutely superb and has made a world of difference to my pleasure of the garden. It is only fail to work on two occasions which let’s face it is better than the record of my wife’s car

This does work (now servers have been sorted) & have been using it for over a week. It is most effective if there is one clear bird sound rather than multiple at once etc but still good for a novice.
Bit on the pricy side (eg not free) & has crashed a could of times but overall good to use when out and about.

Having paid £4.99 for the app, I’d expect it to work at least after a fashion; however I am constantly defeated by the error message, “You have no internet connection.” I have full 4G right now. Rather wish I hadn’t bothered...

Interesting app, but it must be difficult for it to single out the dominant bird songs... and it shows in the number of spurious suggestions. Mute swans in the middle of a forest? Now the app has stopped working saying “no internet connection”, while everything else on my phone is happily enjoying a 4G or wifi signal!

I paid £4.99 for this yesterday and it won’t process any bird calls because it keeps telling me I have no internet access which I most definitely do. Having now read a lot of other reviews complaining about the same issue, this needs to be resolved or the app removed and not charge for something that doesn’t work ! It’s a shame .i want my money back !

The app recorded sounds for 30 secs and produced a readout of percentage of birds it could recognise but what would have been nice in the identification, is a button to play each individual sound (as on one I found with the blackbird). This would then actually help the identification by sound, which is why I paid for the app. I feel I have been ripped off. I could have gone to wiki for free to get this information.
The results are not always useful. We need recordings.

I’m not the best at recognising bird song, but I’m fairly confident with some of the more common species. I’ve tested this app out a few times and unfortunately it never gets it right. Hopefully it may improve but I don’t believe it to be very reliable at the moment.

You have to tap screen to start a recording but in May 2018 you can tap till your finger are blue but it still won’t start recording. Deleted app and downloaded again but still cannot get recording to start. I think the developers have abandoned this app.
