This is a great game and I really do love it but I encountered a glitch in one of the side rooms where I managed to clip off the top of the screen and ended up stuck in a wall in the main cavern. I don’t think it’s common but just wanted to point it out

...had to get on iPhone. Simply brilliant, so much so that I've got it here so I can practice while I'm out and about. It's SO good, simple, fiendish, tough and leaves you wanting more every time! Haven't bought a game this addictive in a long time!

Amazing.

I've reached the final boss once and died. I miss games like these where once you die it's game over, this makes you have to really work to master it and complete it. The difficulty level (even on easy mode) is hard, which makes this game fantastic. My favourite game on iOS. Thank you designers and developers!

This game is one of my all time favourites for its unique, fast paced action proving it to be the ultimate time killer. I absolutely love the retro styling and game mechanics.
Everything's balanced perfectly in Downwell. It's relatively difficult yet not impossible and it's quite fast paced, yet not overwhelming.
So why not 5 stars? Repetitiveness. Nothing to do with how hard or easy the game is, it's just that after a while it starts to just get... sort of boring.
I feel like something more needs to be added. Maybe add characters instead of just changing the styles, and I'd love to see stuff like daily challenges, achievement etc. implemented in the game, to bring this game to the next level.
There's been no update in ages and I really do hope they haven't neglected this masterpiece.

Fantastic quick paced distraction

The rougelite elements of this game work wonderfully for mobile, being able to play a few games on the go is exactly how this game was designed. It helps that the focus of the game, constantly moving downwards, is aided by the vertical shape of the mobile itself, your target is always on focus. Naturally, the touch controls can be an issue at times, but the buttons given to you are large enough spaces that it's very easy to adjust to them.

Heard a lot about this game from several videogame reviewers, and they were right :). The game has great gameplay and I think it fits in perfectly with mobile gaming. Great for times when you only have some time to spare playing something.

It's fun at first but then it becomes evident that this is all the game is. It doesn't change, just gets a little bit more difficult. It's repetitive and doesn't perform very well on IPhone 6S. Why it's getting perfect 10 scores is beyond me. I get the feeling that critics like to shower games like these with praise because indie games are trendy at the minute. Can we not just go back to having ethics in game journalism and judge a game based on it's own merits rather than give a game a good (or bad review) for some alternative agenda?

Genuinely fun - a delightful game!

You know how great you think those games you played in the '80s were?
But you know deep down that you're remembering them three decades on through the rosiest of rose-tinted spectacles &, in reality, they were mostly a bit rubbish & not particularly playable, don't you?
Hmm?
Go on, admit it…
Well, this is how those C64 & ZXS games should've been. This game is laugh-out-loud fun at a breakneck pace & I'm missing playing it even as I hurriedly type these words.
So ignore any grumpy-pants reviewers here who don't get just how ingenious & creative you have to be to design such appealing pixel art while keeping the colour palette to the bare minimum & who actually need to be spoon-fed instructions on how to play this game (you learn how to play it by, erm, playing it:
fall a bit; control your fall; land; jump; shoot; collect; die; repeat; improve. It's not rocket science).
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6 stars out of 5)

Best. iOS. Game. Ever?

I'd long fallen out of love with mobile gaming - the free to play domination, the poorly controlling console ports, and all the broken promises.
Downwell has changed all that.
A pixel perfect blend of Spelunky's randomly generated dungeon platforming and Metroid's 8 bit visuals, Downwell is a twitch platformer that's so smart, so well designed, it has quickly shone as one my favourite games on ANY platform of the last few years.
Miraculously the controls work better than any platformer I've played on a touch screen, and that's partly down to the fact you are mainly falling rather than progressing left to right. While there is a jump button, success or failure will be down to split second decisions on whether to shift left or right mid air, stomping on enemies, and then hovering and hopping with gun boots that only reload when you touch an enemy or the ground (a genius mechanic that is bound to be copied). At its best, the game is almost hypnotic despite being fiendishly hard, and it'll test your decision-making under immense pressure.
When you die (and die you will) you start again and the levels regenerate into new pits of death you just won't be able to resist.
The sessions are short enough, the difficulty so well balanced, and the progression loop that satisfying you won't mind dying hundreds of times, if not thousands.
If you're normally put off by "rogue likes" and difficult retro titles - don't be - I was and this has absolutely converted me.
And at this price Downwell is Downright essential and possibly the best iOS game ever made.

The kind of game that aspiring-hipster critics love, or maybe pretend to love. Graphics so poor you can't see what's going on? Well that's "retro". Awkward and frustrating gameplay? That just makes it a "twitch platformer".
This game has more going for it than many, and paid games without IAPs or ads will always have my respect, but don't believe the hype about this being the best game of 2015. It's not.

Downwell is comfortably my favourite — and dare I say it, the best — iOS game of the last two years. Bar none!
I've probably ploughed through 12hrs of head-stomping, boot-firing fun in the last week alone...
I just really wish there was an option to play it in landscape on my iPhone 6s Plus!

This game is super hard and I haven't come across any checkpoints yet in the game. I haven't gained any progress and I die all of the time. To make it easier add more checkpoints or instead of when you die you keeps your stuff instead of loosing it all. If I was doing a rage video then this is what I'd pick.

This game is worth the money, it has no in game purchases and the developers could easily have added those but they haven't! (Thank god!!!). The gameplay is fast paced and challenging, the upgrade system has a very similar feel to the upgrade system in the Binding of Isaac and the shops are similar to. The gameplay is unique and fun, I love the retro style and the brilliantly charming character. 100% Worth a buy!

This game ain't for the new iPhone 6s as it freezes the phone if the phone was to sleep whilst the game screen was on, it even prevents you unlocking your phone using your finger id. Every time you move of the game to other apps or home screen you have to close the game first or else when you get back to it your phone freezes again and have to resort by going to home screen then closing the app.
Terrible experience with this game & I have an iPhone 6s+
Don't bother buying it👎🏾

Downwell is an amazing, minimalist game, reminiscent of Megaman or maybe Sonic. You can jump right in or out, do a run, then hop out again, which is in essence what ios games should be.
None of this amazing nextgen graphics or online multiplayer rubbish, just something fun and clever to play while you're waiting for the bus. A masterpiece, and I thank the developers!

One of the more amazing apps I've seen in quite a long time. The gameplay is seemless, responsive and very entertaining. The item and shop aspect of the game is one I didn't expect but I absolutely love. It'd be great to see continued work and updates to this game, because it's one of the few that really deserve it.

Version 1.0.2
It's a fun game, but it suffers from a number of issues. Most obvious is the random slowness; it'll be working fine then all of a sudden it'll really start to crawl. The controller positioning makes it hard to see where you're going. Most frustrating is what I can only describe as a bug frankly - there are times when you can't see far enough down to the next ledge so you just have to jump. You can almost guarantee that they'll be a monster where you land, which you don't have time to shoot.
I've played this game loads but I'm just about done with never getting very far down. Would much rather the game was a little easier.

Update: fixed the slowness issue for earlier iPads - now you get a 5* review! Awesome at full speed. Just what I first expected, good job.
Game looks great in the videos so I paid my money and opened it with excitement, but it plays in super slow motion! It's not really playable. Looks like an early spectrum game, that's fine. Plays like one in 2015, that's not fine. Wish I had never updated to iOS9, I've seen nothing but negative changes from it. Sorry to the devs as I'm guessing this is more apple's fault than yours, but this game is the most affected I have seen and you need to know.

High octane, old school, 8-Bit, button bashing gameplay!! Feels like a 'PC Engine meets Gameboy' kinda thing here, and I LOVE IT. The music is awesome too. It has the makings of a really cool game. Great stuff! Keep building on it and introduce different styles of levels. That'd keep it interesting. Very enjoyable for any 8-Bit lover.

I love this game on PC, but on my iPad mini 1st generation the game runs ridiculously slowly, how can a game with game boy style graphics run worse than a 3D fps? A part of me thinks that apps are being made slow on purpose to make us update our devices.

I've bought a lot of iOS games in my time and, whilst a lot of them provide a nice distraction on the train or bus, I've never found any that I've been compelled to play at home. This game is brilliantly realised, a marvellous achievement, and the developer ought to be very very proud of themselves.
