Version 1.2.1
Enjoyable version of the TV game, but the dictionary is rubbish. Especially at expert level, some of the word combinations are gibberish. (Whoever heard of the word ‘contrasty’ for a conundrum answer - the Apple spellchecker doesn’t even recognise it!) Fix this and you have a great game. Leave it unfixed and this an another ‘nearly good but fatally flawed’ game.

Numbers don’t always work

Version 1.2.1
Sometimes when doing the number section, it doesn’t allow you to press certain buttons. It completely messes up the games and means you end up miles away from the target number because you get stuck.

Uses US English words which is frustrating

Not a fan of the US English dictionary use; when doing the conundrum took me ages to get it because ‘vandalised’ was spelt incorrectly (for a Brit, anyway). Can we please have the option to choose dictionary?
Other than that - great game! Agree with others saying it would be good to have ‘not written down’ option. Or maybe iPad version allowing us to actually write using Apple Pencil. Think that would make it more realistic for me; I’m quicker when I can write them down.

Version 1.2.1
How on earth is the word Orion not in the dictionary..
And the cpu just copies all your good words..

Good game but feel cheated.

PKR are PRK's
Game is fine until you get to the ‘expert’ level, CPU then appears to have a knowledge (and the correct spelling) of thousands of medical terms which would never be used in everyday life, and would only be know to experts in that field. Also, the numbers game can sometimes be farce as the CPU pulls out some remarkable multiplications to magically bag the 10 points. It’s just too blatant to be ignored 3/5…

Be good to be able to play other people instead of just the computer

know your ducks
This game is great it’s so much like the real tv show.
I like the fact you can practise or play alone.
The instructions are clear but I’ve found that on 5he numbers game the computer won’t let you finish using your numbers if you are going to be more than 10 points away from the total required .
It’s a really good game and apart from the above mentioned I can’t fault it.

Really good fun

Me and my children have great fun playing this game, I think it’s great value for money.

They need to stop putting 1’s in almost every numbers games

Unable to play

Just get a pop up about game centre and I’m unable to click continue and am stuck on that screen !!

Keeps freezing

Like the game but keeps freezing :(

Countdown Review

Lauren Cassandra
As a person who has installed this game today, I have enjoyed it very much. You have an option of 5 or 15 rounds. You can play against your friends if you can practise by yourself. This game is great and I would recommend it to anyone- even if you don’t like the game.

Keeps My Brain Sharp!

I love playing Countdown. I don’t watch TV much now so I don’t play along with the Show but playing on the App is really satisfying.

I really enjoy this game, but would love if you could play against friends or random gamers

Can’t play

Paid and downloaded but stuck on the game centre page e we high is frustrating. Tried removing and redownloading, switching the phone off and on and the same thing happens.

Good game

Very good game

App won’t open

Unfortunately I can’t get the app to open on my phone. I’ve paid for it, downloaded it, but when I try to open it, it says ‘What’s New In Game Centre’ and there’s no way to close that screen (the ‘continue’ button doesn’t work). I’ve tried dis-installing and re-installing the app to no avail. A waste of £1.79 and a shame as I was looking forward to it.

Countdown review

Love this game so much however, lacks the ability to play multiplayer online. 2 player mode is fun but you have to be physically together, which in the current climate isn’t always possible. Please could you add online multiplayer functionality?? Would love to play with friends remotely and would happily pay for this premium feature🤞🤞🤞

So many errors

It’s only a game but it’s deeply annoying to be constantly told something isn’t a word when it’s in the OED. Have decided to manage my annoyance and delete it. Just really poor

I would like this app to update because it's not fast enough

Ebony barron
I would like this app to update because it's not fast enough

Needs Updating Desperately

Why is ‘dane’ / ‘danes’ in the countdown dictionary but ‘chilean’ / ‘chileans’?!
Seems an odd contradiction.

Good but flawed

Unlike the ‘normal cpu’ I don’t know my 112 times table so don’t often win the numbers round! It’s not programmed like any Countdown player I’ve ever seen, Carol and Rachel excluded!

Fantastic app

Great app it’s a fun game that keeps your brain working I love it

As close to the real game as you are ever likely to get on an app.

Great game!

Really enjoy playing Countdown and very close to the TV game show.
There are a couple of suggestions I’d like to see in future updates. An option (or randomly) to start first or second. Also, to see all possible words instead of one example of the longest word after the letters rounds, this would be good for example if you had a longer word but didn’t gamble using it.
A real / virtual Rachel Riley wouldn’t go amiss either!! 😍
Keep up the good work. ✅

Almost perfect - online play missing

Leeham 80s
This game is almost perfect. If the developers put in online play this would be a 5 star, perfect game.
Update: developers have said online play coming soon but that was years ago and they said the same thing recently.
You’d think given climate online play would have been added but sadly not…it’s now a need for online play…

It’s an ok iPad way of filling in a little gap and keeping your brain awake, a distraction, quite enjoying it.

Paid for game that im unable to play

A game centre notification appears that im unable to close whether i select sign out or continue.

Fails to Load on iOS 14.5

Which sadly makes it unplayable

I’m loving this game, it’s as near as I’ll ever get to the real thing!
Thanks developers!

Top word game

Faultless I love it so addictive

Okay, lacking multiplayer features

The game’s got the basics covered for solo play, but the 2 player mode is rubbish - passing a device between players? Ugh. Come on. I’d like to see 2 player games over WiFi so I can play simultaneously with my partner each on our own devices, and I’d like to be able to add friends and play over the internet in real time.

A good version of the game

I enjoy playing the game and am using it as a preparation tool to apply to go on the tv show but it needs three improvements.
1. Please get rid of the closed form words. They wouldn’t be allowed on the show. Today, for example, it tried to tell me that lastname was a single word. It isn’t. I want to learn good combinations not bad.
2. There are not enough E’s in the vowel selections. The tv show has a higher proportion.
3. The computer selects five vowels and four consonants far too often. This rarely happens on the show.

Disgrace to the Tv Show

Timer clock in this disgrace of a game you would supposed to be 30 seconds like in the tv show instead you get 15 seconds, not enough half the time of the show to do what is impossible to do. This is a shameful product, based on the great television show.
Developers should be ashamed of this vile disgrace.
Also what dictionary are these people using, I’ve never seen such words and spelling’s are they trying to be insulting to regular people.
The numbers rounds are an utter shambles, you do not get give enough time to review the numbers and think about a possible equation, it is a utter shambles.
I have played 30 plus times against the normal computer and lost every single time by a land slide.
Save your money Do Not Buy This Utter Rubbish.

I’m a GOD

Ryan is trash xx

Great fun

JMD York
Great for a bit of downtime. I agree with other reviewers that a not written down button would be good. I’ve also had to download this several times now as it stops working after a while.

No online feature

Purchased this game and it has a two players feature for the SAME device. Who would like to play countdown on one device. There should be a multiplayer feature for a paid app.

Wenger Out

I played this game but I still want Wenger out

Yeah it’s dece

by the Doctor
Absolute rubbish. Whenever you select letters you always get a repeat of several letters sometimes three of the same letters. It is not like the television game. Obviously this can happen sometimes but not every time. I would not recommend this game.still no improvement in the game despite being told it is basically bad luck on the selection of letters. Unless I am playing a different game to anyone else. Every time I select letters I get a run of repeated letters coming out example 4 O vowels and 3 R consonants. This happens almost every time unlike the television game. I have played this game for months now and watch the television programme every day. Whilst this has all the appearance of the same as the TV program that's where it ends. Ever time I select letters I will always and I mean always get the same letters repeated several times. I select four vowels and get the same vowel then five constants and get four the same. How can that possibly be right?

Top notch

Top notch gaming. Ruddy marvellous time to be had by all!

Fine apart from numbers rounds

blue jeans
Can’t understand why it doesn’t allow you to calculate certain equations.
Also letters are extremely repetitive.
Almost every round I end up with 3 or 4 consonants and 3 vowels all of the same letter.
Bit miffed at wasting £2 on it to be honest.

Doesn’t work on iPhone

Great on iPad.
Gets stuck on a Game Centre screen when opening on the iPhone so is unusable.

Good game but needs some tweaking

I enjoyed it as it simulates the actual game.
The annoying bit is every time I open the app it ask me to share on games centre- really annoying.
Secondly it doesn’t change with the movement of phone- not good. And there is no pause or exit button. It would be good to stop the game if I want to.

Fun game

Great for playing.

I’m hooked

If you love the tv show, you’ll love this app. It’s so addictive, I’m constantly playing & improving my ability all the time. Could be improved if maybe the 2 player mode could be linked through different devices but apart from that I think it’s brilliant

Daz robwww

Enjoy playing the game. But would like it if you were able to play friends online

Great game

I think this a great app and a great game but I suppose the icing on the cake would be if it was possible to play online against other people nonetheless still a great game.

Mr kgb*
It’s amazing , better than being depressed.
It’s a relaxing chore and nerve wrecking.
Good luck!!

Simple, just like the game show- really great little game to sort a mushy mind.....
Can’t fault it

Great though dictionary needs work

I am practising for the show and this app is generally very good. I agree with some other review comments I’ve read:
- would be good to skip through the 30 seconds when you have the solution early
- inadvisable to use the numbers like a calculator to guesstimate
- a 'not written down’ function with, say, 3 seconds to type in would be realistic
My main query is with the dictionary though. It’s generally fairly accurate to the ODE (I am cross-checking with Lexico) but it allows US spellings and ‘closed forms’ which are sometimes a bit dodgy. This gives the Expert CPU a clear advantage as would-be contestants don’t want to be looking for words that won’t be allowed on the show.
Otherwise, it’s very good indeed, and true to the spirit of the show.

This is a brilliant game in every way, I downloaded it last week and I have been thrashed every time by the CPU including the easy CPU. Just now though I’ve beaten it for the first time. I’ll now move onto the normal CPU. Besides this method of playing there are a good few other ways that you can play this game. I’d highly recommend it x

Fun and Addictive!

Love the game as it’s great for brain training. Just like the real game show. Has a high level of replay ability. Only thing I’d say is that I wish the application was updated to fit the latest iPhone full screen layout.

Brilliantly recreates the quiz on your smartphone

This is so close to the TV game and the developers have done an incredible job trying to emulate that experience. It is extremely addictive, so be warned. The only slight differences from playing the actual game.... You can rely on the in-game calculator to do some of the maths for you so can get a little lazy doing the sums in your head and the game doesn’t allow for those words you think of on 30 seconds which you don’t get a chance to write down (same with the numbers game). Not sure how they could ever do this, though. Well done to the developers.

Great family App all round.

The Game is easy to use , you can it make easy or hard, practice or compete. It’s one of the only games, it as no adverts, no gimmicks, no trying to sell you other games. It’s countdown as you would expect it, very simple with no complicated actions. Good practice for keeping the brain active, even my wee girl age 7 loves to use it.
A great family app all round.

Dumbest word game going

Literally, as the title says, the dumbest word game I’ve come across. I’ve had about 5 or 6 words already in the first few games that apparently “aren’t in the dictionary”. Look them up and they are in the dictionary and also counted as valid scrabble words. Load of BS.
Update - This is the most annoying game going now, what ****ing dictionary is used? The developers need to sort it out, I’m told words aren’t in the dictionary constantly costing me games. It’s the end of the world I know but my god it’s so bloody frustrating.

Not written down

I am really enjoying the game but I agree with the reviewer who said the game needs a ‘not written down’ button or something when submitting found words. I often find words late, when there isn’t enough time to write them down. Please add this function. Only been playing the game for half a day so maybe I am not grasping the calculation process for the numbers either, but when solving the numbers during the TV show, I often make two separate calculations then synthesise them at the end, to reach a solution. Seems like the in-game calculation process does not allow for this method, which is annoying, unless I am missing something. These are my only gripes, otherwise the game is very enjoyable, thank you.

Good but missed some subtle gameplay

Study the show carefully - each player declares their word length first. If your opponent declares their word length before you, it gives you a choice between a dodgy word of the same/longer length or a safe word of the same length. This is a key part of the game’s strategy. You should account for this in the app to get a perfect recreation.

I played against expert level and used an official anagram dictionary solver online. The game doesn’t like it when you beat the higher levels. It lets the computer have the word “Sluggo” which it claimed was a singular word for “Sluggos” which apparently are some sort of men’s trunks?!? The dictionary used is a complete farce. May as well be able to use people’s names because it allows the computer to use the most nonsensical animal or personal names. I used the dictionary to make the word Lardass and apparently that isn’t in the dictionary?? Lol complete fix designed to help the computer win. The bot doesn't like losing. The CPU will struggle with words and only come up with 3/4 letter words like “Help” but always nail the numbers round with the most random of calculations. So the CPU is dreadful at English but an absolute maths genius. Absolute rip off and completely rigged to make the computer win. Rubbish

Very nice version of the TV game

Hootie 12
How fast is 30 seconds? It’s a good smooth running game and a lot of fun to play. Tests your vocabulary too although the computer opponent is on another level, however just as a challenge it is well worth parting with a couple of pounds, euros, dollars or whatever currency. Just one thing no multiplayer online opponents, please Mr Developer sort it please.

Quite flawless

Onkel Janni
It’s nice when most stress and frustration experienced while using an app is merely from the nature of the game itself. This app gives a seamless experience of the original game. My only request would be that we can submit last minute answers for those rounds when you get a better answer too close to the buzzer to write it down.

Just one improvement required

This is great. The ONLY thing that would make it better is a way to submit your answer, cancel or speed up the rounds in practice mode. If you get the solution in 5 seconds you’ve either got to wait or close and reopen the app. No one wants to just stare at a clock ‘counting down’ 😃

Brilliant!! Great for improving your game

Daz Jones Fitness
Having the added bonus of dictionary corner telling us what their high scoring words mean gives us the opportunity to learn useful words. It could have been improved by showing ALL top possibilities as the old handheld battery powered game did..but... this is still brilliant!! Quite challenging on expert level too! Love it!

7 letters not written down.

I enjoy playing this game.
One amendment I would like to see would be to have the “not written down” option. If you see an answer in the dying seconds of the round It can often be difficult & very frustrating to hit the right tiles. It would be good to be offered the chance for say an extra 5-10 seconds to put in an answer without pausing and have it count - just like they have on the tv show.

Still work to do.

Good point: expert mode is not unbeatable. However the letters given every round on expert mode are ridiculous and do not reflect realistic gameplay- where you’ll get a tricky round once every 4 or 5 rounds. Also the computer picks far too many vowels on expert mode. And common compound words are not in the dictionary.
No improvements in 2 years shows there has been little care taken with this app.
An update is needed.

Good! But dictionary needs updating

This game is a lovely way to practice your countdown skills, especially with numbers.
However, I’ve found that the letters round can miss a few words that are more recent editions in the OED, that are mentioned on the show. For example: “ADIPOU”, “PEGASID”, “RETINULE”... among a fair few others.
The dictionary seems to be slightly out of date. Hopefully it can be updated soon!

Great for practise

I’m also using this as practise for the real thing. It’s great for he word games - particularly as some words I assumed were in the OED are not. This is not fixed as some child suggested earlier (why on earth would it be? You don’t win anything!), just has a specific dictionary which is authentic to the show - although some words I do question! The numbers game I agree does calculations for you so makes it a little easier. Would be good to have a pause during the timer as well, an an interactive element so you can play with others online, but overall this is about as good as an app can get.

Just like the tv show

Just like the tv show. HOWEVER the dictionary isn’t up to scratch. It disallows some words that are in the Oxford English Dictionary and allows others that aren’t (often American spellings of English words in the latter case). Can be very annoying as you just think you’ve got a brilliant word that exists, and then it gets disallowed. If the dictionary could just be sorted this would be a great game.

Crucial practise

Great app to practise for the real thing. I was using it daily up u till my filming date and it helped a lot. One thing to bare in mind with the numbers game though is that it acts like a calculator for you, best thing to do is write the numbers down once they’re picked, close your phone and then work it out on paper.
Would be great of you could pause the clock, especially in practise mode, help you build up your time skills.
Will continue to play and train!

Great but Richard Whiteley’s voice needs to be added so the way that we can remember him

Jonathan the pixel Keane
This app is so fantastic but they should add Richard Whiteley’s voice because he passed away in 2005 and he was the first host of countdown away back in November 1982 so that could be an idea if barnstorm games do that so the way that we can remember him

Little Miss Potter
This app is very good and true to the tv programme. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is because of the numbers round. You can’t do two different sums and add them together to get the answer. It’s annoying as sometimes I know I can get the answer but I can’t do it on the app as it won’t let me

Not bad but...

Not bad, a little long (though follows the format of the game) however the two player version takes far too long as there is no option for two people to play a connected game on two different devices at the same time and it’s pretty clunky.
Also there are lots of words that DO exist in the English Oxford dictionary that the game says aren’t words (and follow the rules) pretty annoying given that the whole point is that it’s a maths & spelling game!

Just like the TV. I've been playing a while now and I never get bored. My game has improved immensely since having this. Definitely worth a few quid to get rid of the annoying ads, they do get on your nerves after a while.

Fantastic Countdown App

We absolutely love it! We play as a family but can be played as one player, against the computer or 2 player! It really is the best app we have found for us all to enjoy! We have a ten year old and since playing she is so quick to answer, it has helped us all!
Love it!!!

Just like the real thing

This is a great rendition of the tv show, the graphics are as good as they can be for this game and the sound is true the tv show too. The numbers round can be the difference of winning and losing, at home looking at the tv and solving it is something I can normally do, but when you have to do it on the screen it is a little harder and nerving 😯 I would recommend the purchase if you like the tv show, or word games in general...great job on the app.

Almost great

The dictionary is pretty hit-and-miss, including a bunch of proper nouns like obscure brand names, but leaving out things that are definitely in the Scrabble and similar dictionaries. Also I really wish you could set it only to play the original music clips. I love the iconic theme but the cheap ripoff background music version is dreadful.

Excellent Game

This is an absolutely fantastic game, in July this year the real countdown studio had a makeover so I was wondering whether or not there will be an update for that?
Plus I notice when you play the game that the feel of it is so real which makes it even more fun
Keep up the good work

Just like the Show with NO Ads.

This is a great game with varying difficulty levels. All sounds and music are here and it is very addictive.
My only gripes are that some of my words that I've chosen are dismissed as not being in the dictionary. When I've looked some up they are there there as a derivative. Also the conundrum should be a little easier to correct yourself when typing a wrong letter.

Good game but the dictionary needs updating because some of the words are words in reality but not on the game and the computer knows everything and ain't really fair even if you have them on easy they will still beat you but overall good and addictive game.

Best word game on the App Store

Big fan of countdown (and 8 out of cats) and this is definitely far superior to any other word game on the App Store.
This is the first mobile game I've purchased in the last 3 years due to not wasting money on rubbish games, but this is definitely worth the buy. After playing two games I had to leave a review of how good it is.

Excellent and addictive

This is a superb recreation of the TV game and can be played for as little or as long as you like. The Practise feature is the winner for me, which also shows what the highest word score would have been and how to solve the numbers game. I've been waiting for this game for ages!

Fun & Realistic

Really enjoy playing this game. The graphics are great and the simple but clear way it resembles the real countdown is brilliant. Love the fact you can choose a quick game or a full 15 rounds plus you can play single, two player or against the computer. Highly recommended.

As authentic as you can get - wow !

I absolutely love this Countdown app. It is just like playing it on tele. The letters, numbers and conundrum features are all awesome. You can do the whole thing or you can play a quick version. There are several difficulty levels. I mean, what's not to like folks ?!

Great app

This is a well thought out and fun return to countdown for me, although I think I could do with a little more time for each challenge. Maybe an option to choose more time on the game would draw in more players who, like, myself, are advancing in years and slowing up a bit.

The gameplay is exactly like the show itself. The interface is very intuitive and makes the gameplay a lot of fun. Also, even though this is not exactly a game that needs to be heavy on graphics, I loved the sharpness of the animation and the general quality of the game's display. Absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend if you're a fan of the show.

Multiplayer mode needs more work

Great game. However, would love to see better multiplayer modes such as Bluetooth head to head. Better still, for group plays, allow groups to insert answers manually after time is up, thereby mimicking the TV show exactly, effectively making the app act as the host, Rachel Riley and dictionary corner all at once.

Good to play on iPad

Saddleworth Sue
Easy to play, really good to have practice button. Takes a bit of time to get used to numbers round but you get there if you keep persevering. As on another review it would be great to have a clear option in the conundrum, but other than that it's good fun

Worth waiting for

Finally there's an official Countdown app and it's great. One thing that could be better is that it would be easier to do the conundrum if you could play with the letters instead of having to solve it completely in your head.

Very good

Have waited a long time for a countdown app and it doesn't disappoint. The only reason I haven't given five stars is that the conundrum round needs an undo button. I have sometimes pressed the wrong letter when spelling out the conundrum and there's no way of correcting the mistake. It makes the difference between winning and losing a game.
