Really enjoying using Apple Pencil and new iPad mini, thought I’d revisit an old app, only to be told that I have to pay a yearly subscription to use Apple Pencil. I understand all the other benefits of Premium, but hiding a hardware feature behind an annual payment is not good.
Wish my Naz gets my day one app access when I’m gone
It’s crazy that “on this day” shows today’s stuff. Otherwise, solid app. Worth the subscription IMHO.
Great app for journalling. Use it every single day!
It is by far the best journaling app. It saves me so much time every day.
The only downside is that it drains the battery therefore 4 stars.
An amazing way to journal and keep memories. I recommend it to everyone as its been interesting and fun for me. I think it’s a well thought out and I wouldn’t want to be without it.
I use Day One every day, first adding a picture of the Daily Telegraph front page from the News App. Then every year it tells me what was front page news a year ago or more on the same date.
During the day I make notes about anything happening of interest and again “On this day” shows it every year.
It tells me when it happened, where it happened and how I felt about it if I put that in.
The ease of documenting and the various entry options and synchronising and ability to share from and to other apps makes day one a must try and must use for me. Also the prompts and the quick entry options are a winner for me.
The most recent update seems to have broken the ability to change location. Searched locations still appear, but they don’t seem to be selectable.
Problem solved. Thanks for the quick response!
I don’t generally review apps but this one is so bad I am making an exception.
The main reason I bought the app is to print a book of photos / journal entries which I have been compiling over the past year. I have made multiple attempts to create and preview a book and every time it gets halfway and then crashes.
I contacted tech support who said it’s a known issue but offered no indication of when it might be resolved. I requested a refund and was directed back to Apple. I have logged that request and literally nothing has happened, not even an automated email.
On subsequent uses I have been unable to log in with my Apple ID for some unspecified reason which means I am unable to sync entries to the cloud which is another one of the main premium features. I contacted support today and got a message saying ‘Day One is back on Monday’ so tech support only runs 5 days / week. Pretty disappointing for such an expensive app.
All in all my experience of this app has been pretty much entirely negative. Not recommended.
I have been trying to keep my personal journal for a long long time. I’ve tried google blog etc before but it was very complex and not convenient at all. This app however is something entirely different. It is amazing in every single aspect. It’s probably the best piece of software I could ever buy so far. It’s organised better than I could ever do on my own. It’s so convenient that I’m looking forward to open it and record an entry more than once everyday. For the first time I don’t have to write separate journals for every activity like daily life, travel, training or food etc because I can tag each of my entries and it’s totally equivalent to keeping a separate journal for each activity in a single journal. Simply amazing and highly recommend.
No-one should trust or use this app !!!
Not long ago the entire sync mechanism broke badly. As well as having no syncing, people found other people's diary entries appear in their journals.
Imagine, your own intimate diary entries appearing on strangers' devices!
Following that fiasco I don't know anyone could continue using this 'service'.
A new sync outage just today! And the iPhone app reports I’m no longer premium and refuses to restore my subscription purchase. It’s as good as robbing you of your diary and flinging the pages in the public road!
Apple should BAN THIS APP.
The title says it! A good journaling app (and responsive developers who have listened to suggestions on improvements such as favourite places) but the sync service is not reliable. This is not good enough as the app depends on it (especially for those who have the Mac version as well); choice of iCloud as an alternative wouldn't hurt - unless there are plans for further tie-ins.
Update August 2018: v3 breaks compatibility with the MacOS version - entries updated with the new iOS version can’t be edited on the MacOS version which, as of 24/8/18, hasn’t yet been updated to maintain seamless cross-platform use.
As of March 2019, syncing still often gets patchy. Not good enough for a paid app...
A friend of mine struggles with her memory quite badly, and this app has been truly useful to her to try and remember her days and what did she do? She improved! The locations it registers and then suggests help her try and bring back some memories, she can’t remember the particular situation but she can remember emotions and feelings about the situation a lot of the time, and once she registers these after few days she has a chance of remembering what’s gone on more or less.
She just wishes there have been a little easier ways of incorporating photographs and icons into the notes, or maybe she just struggles to remember how to do so? Hmm...
Need to work on it then!
In overall, brilliant app with an amazing interface and colour scheme that helps you relax but feel refreshed and alert.
I have been trying to down load my journal for printing for over a year. I ask for help and all I get is I am sorry we are trying.
I wanted this to log a life time dream trip but what a disappointment.
I will only review again if I get my book printed but in the mean time I am warning any purchaser to re think this app.
As after sales is c***.
Very disappointed to have to write this.
I even purchased it again to try on another system it does not work there either.
If they ever fix it I will then retract this.
BUT BE WARNED IT DOES NOT WORK FOR ME.
App reviews are rare for me but after using this for two months I have to say it’s the best find I’ve made in a long time. I’ve been a on & off journalist, but Day One has made it so easy for me to write everyday & sometimes twice a day. It’s always there & simple to use, & I’m looking forward to making a book out of my thoughts at the end of the year. Thank you !
I have used this app now for a couple of months. I like it’s simplicity.
The best function for me is that I can maintain a number of journals at the same time. So I have a ‘life events’ journal going and a separate one for my classic car restoration. Will be great to be able to create books as permanent records of my work too.
I am sure me and the rest of the users wouldn’t mind ads if that meant we had access to the premium VERSION. I promise you. AND SOMETHING else is that, I don’t know why all my pictures get cropped weirdly on the app. It happened in the latest UPDATE. PLEASE FIX ASAP. It’s distorting all my pictures/gifs.
Simply the best app, best team and best support you could ever get! For journaling, this is the only app you need. It has taken over my life as it has so many features and I keep finding uses!
The support team care about its users, and have built a fantastic community around it.
Why would I pay £22.00 ish pound for this app the subscription push me into it I do it want this app or the features it provides, please refund my money. Cheers
After using Dyrii for a short while, I just subscribed to Day One after becoming increasingly frustrated with sync issues and other problems with Dyrii.
So far I have found DayOne very user friendly and intuitive. It might not be as attractive as Dyrii but so far it is reliable and smoothly syncs instantly across my devices. It would be nice if there was an automated way to transfer data from Dyrii to Day One, as there is in the reverse direction.
Update: suddenly started using loads of application memory to the point my Mac was fording it to quit. It’s using GB’s of memory. Some weird bug. Unusable. Waiting for support to give me some advice.
Great app when it works the 3rd party keyboard just doesn't work on the app either through fingerprint login or passcode occasionally works fine but it's too sporadic please fix otherwise it's not useful.
I was a little bit hesitant at first about paying out for another copy of day one. But I am so pleased I did I think it is the most amazing journalling app I have ever used. I love the integration between all of my different iOS devices. I have a MacBook Pro where I use it and it looks amazing. What is the more amazing is it looks so awesome on the iPad and iPhone. And I love the fact that I can make multiple journal entries by using Siri voice commands. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an app and it is not very expensive considering how brill it is. I would like to say well done to the app creators.
I’ve tried many journaling apps, this is by far the best for me. The interface is gorgeous, intuitive and makes adding the essentials very quick and easy. Most meta details are added automatically like location, time, date etc and the new text editor makes things much quicker and natural to edit.
Worth every penny to a development team this strong...
Buggy, profit led and doesn’t add any value to me anymore after I decided I couldn’t trust it and I’ve been a paying user for the last 5 years
I love the app it works really well for me
However it would be perfect if I could create my own template within the journal
It’s end-to-end encryption is not held back by web and other mobile platforms.
It’s hard to find a writing app these days that does not allow you to undo a mistake. But delete text from a story by mistake on iOS Day One and it’s gone - for ever. At that point the bells and whistles of this app are irrelevant and I can not understand why the developers have not given this a higher priority. If you have configured iCloud backups you have the choice of reverting everything back a day or so (all or nothing). So if you can afford to lose your last 24+ hours of work on a misplaced finger on your iPhone, go ahead. Otherwise, avoid.
The current version freezes when tapping on Book Printing tab.
Nuff said. Deleted.
I’m using Day One for more and more things. As a Journal it is superb, but I’m increasingly using it for note taking. Entries can be found easily through search and the ability to create audio entries is also very useful to me. I also like the editor, although I see some people complaint about it. For me it is perfect with all the options I need. Sync has been flawless. There is nothing to complain about here.
It is quite interesting to keep a journal of the day and this app reminds one discretely.
I made an investment to buy this app when it first came out. Everything on the previous version is still available with this brand new version. It has now become free for everyone to use which I’m so glad that it is so; It’s such a beautiful app and a companion of more than two years now. 🙏🏼
Having used Day One for several years now, it is good to see how many developments there have been. These have made the diary more flexible, so it’s possible to add more details and information. Editing is easier now too. Recently the battery demand on my iPhone suddenly increased hugely and it seems the DayOne software was leading this demand. However support was prompt and friendly and the problem has now been sorted out. No issues any more with demand in battery. Exciting!
Apart from the super fast and genuinely attentive feedback and support, this app **fills in the cracks** where the excellent Notes, Evernote and others clearly have when you need to start a reflective log.
Where to begin:
##Templates (with Markdown) for you to develop - I am a novice and their 3 page tutorial was enough to get me going.
##Ease of use - clutter free
##Great for spiritual reflection, business reflection and fun times.
*Not a bad word yet.*
(I am showing off now ;) )
Always wanted to keep a diary but couldn’t be bothered to actually do it.
Being an app makes it easy. I write in it once a week on the train to work as part of my routine. Had this for over a year and it’s amazing to read over what you have been doing. Even a lunchtime drink with colleagues is a great memory or even simple everyday events such as preparing a special meal at home, train breaking down for 2hrs, playing in the park, snowball fights etc. Adding photos is wonderful.
This app is easy to use.
Until now I’ve loved Day One. But the new update makes everything so much more awkward and I’m sick of accidentally making new entries and then having to mess around through several steps to delete them. The new update seems counterintuitive and far less user friendly. Please put it back the way it was!
A great diary app. Easy to use. Queries to the support desk are answered and resolved promptly. This app just keeps getting better.
I can’t use my Apple Watch anymore since this update. Please can you fix it Day One as I am a big user of this app, especially on the watch journaling my life!
I've used DayOne for years without a problem.
However, the app now crashes when in a journal entry where you have changed context and used another app, but return to DayOne.
Day One is undoubtedly the best journal app for iOS & it's a delight to see that it is regularly updated and refined. I personally upload one photo (collage) per day, together with a brief description of my day - it’s a wonderful habit to get into, especially when the widget reminds what I was doing one, two, three etc years ago today. Just try it for a week and you’ll soon realise how beautifully it’s been designed.
Since I am already journaling the past, it seems incredibly natural that I also diary the future. And for that, the UI works effortlessly for knowing which days I am free or have plans.
Regarding the payment options, I think 80% of new Day One users will be happy one journal with one photo per day and the knowledge that it is backed up in the cloud. As I understand it, that is exactly what new users will get without the need to subscribe, so you don’t need to worry about being forced to pay the subscription, unless you become a real power user and want extra features. And I applaud those people because you enable the developers to keep making Day One even better.
App suggestions to the developers:
• I don’t think the recent update that means you now need three actions to filter from the home page is a step forward. Please bring back the filter by tag button to the home page :)
• Please consider integrating the incredible preview feature from the version 1 calendar interface (at least as an option). Just gliding your finger across your entries was a real joy and was literally the number one way I converted friends to download the app!
And finally... thank you for making such an amazing app!
ps - is anyone concerned that Amazon’s official company website blog is called Day One? #lawsuit
I don’t know what was behind ver 2.0 and why they decided to make 2.0 A’s it is the same app. But to be honest was a very weird move. Anyway app is more sluggish than the old classic some some ui decision seems to be a bit off. But the worst part is that they want to charge me one more time or begging for sub. And I know that I can update for 48 (it will be almost what 90 pounds? For classic and 2.0?) to the lifetime version but I’m afraid that after that they will decide that now they will do version 3. Not a chance boys. I hope that this biz model will not work for you and you will loose. All the best. Oh yeh and if you are looking for a less pricey app try journey.
I cancelled this as the app wasn’t what I wanted, but I am still being charged! No way I can see if stopping it. Unhappy! Link to developers website warns it is bogus too so can’t use that
The bar that they’ve put across the top of entries with, the date and ‘done’ on is so badly thought through. it reminds you that you’re in ‘edit mode’, but that is completely un necessary since they’ve introduced entries as ‘touch to edit’. If you’re always in edit mode, then you’re always mentally active, not settled, there’s no longer such a thing as just sitting back with your journal and reflecting on your life with your completed entries. To underline this insult, ‘done’ doesn’t actually do anything useful when you press it! It simply removes your entry from view and displays some random quote in it’s space. Why would that ever be what I want? (See below).
Lastly, because the edit mode is always on, anything your device considers mis-spelled will be underlined in red. It’s just not peaceful and feels like being at work editing a Word document.
RESPONSE TO DEVELOPER:
‘The done button now dismissed the entry to get back to the timeline’
No, it does not. In landscape view, at least on an iPad, the timeline is continually visible there on the left, there is nothing to ‘get back to’. In portrait mode pressing, ‘done’ does not reveal the timeline, it dismisses the entry to reveal a blank screen with an arbitrary quote. To get back to the timeline you have to press on the journal selection top left. It would be good if you listened.
I've used Day One for some time now, from version one (which became Day One Classic) through to the current version, in both paid app and now subscription model. I was initially sceptical when the subscription model was announced and held off for some time, but now I'm so pleased I went for it.
The latest version of the app, version 3, shows exactly why this is such a good model for an app such as Day One. The development that has gone into the app has made a great leap forward in terms of usability which is such an underrated element of app design. So many developers chase the headline new features all at the expense of the user experience. While version 3 does integrate new features such as audio recording which the team have been working on for some time, the real highlight has been the way the existing features and app usability have been improved. The team at Bloom seem so dedicated to producing the best app they can and it shows.
Day One has a wealth of uses for different individuals needs, and is powerful yet open enough to work for you, be it tracking work projects, a day-to-day life or gratitude journal, to a hobby log for travel/film/book/wine/sport etc. enthusiasts, and more. You're able to record, tag, revisit everything at any time synced across devices. It's an app that I genuinely enjoy and look forward to using every day wherever I am, and even in this longer-than-expected review I've not even scratched the surface!
None started just open this app and it wanted me to buy the
Prime version well I won’t never even did one entry one big swindle
I'm now into my 3rd Year of journalling with this App. I make an entry every day and even the mundane becomes interesting when you use the 'On this day' feature to look back over time.
I am not a fan of the new editor in version 3. Everything just seems a little more difficult/less intuitive. Specifically access to the date editor, mark-up and moving photos. I really valued the ability to drag a photo to any point in your text. Very handy if you write your journal in a single block and add the photos later.
Also the auto-bolding of the first line is very hit and miss with no easy way to fix it.
Not your finest hour - sadly a lot of the most recent reviews seem to agree
