Description

AUM is the flexible audio mixer, recorder, and connection hub for your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Connect hardware inputs and outputs, Audio Unit extensions, Inter-App Audio apps, Audiobus, soundfile players, built-in signal processing and filters, in any configuration you want.

Route anything to anywhere with mix-busses, effect sends, audiobus ports, and external multi-channel audio interfaces.

Play hosted synths and instruments using the built-in keyboard or external MIDI controllers, or sequence them with AU MIDI plugins or from other apps using Virtual MIDI.

Record mixes, individual tracks, or both, straight into the storage space of AudioShare (no copying of files needed), with synchronized start and end for perfect loops.

Play back recordings, soundfiles and loops as channel sources in the mixer for backing tracks, further processing or mixing. Soundfiles can be opened from anywhere, including USB drives on iOS 13 and later.

Route and filter MIDI in any way you like using the MIDI matrix. Combine and filter MIDI endpoints using MIDI buses.

Synchronize everything with the transport clock and play in time with other apps or devices using Ableton Link. Connect external music machines and synchronize them with MIDI Clock.

Includes built-in processing nodes for various stereo processing, Mid/Side balance and conversion, EQs and filters, limiting, clipping and saturation. Or use any 3rd party Audio Unit extension or Inter-App Audio effect.

Still essential kit

AUM remains an essential for IOS music makers. Accomplished musicians and sonic dabblers alike can get so much done within the app. It excels when using AU3 apps recording into either itself or the brilliant Loopy Pro placed in an effects slot. What it really needs is an update so that many more channels are shown. Four is no longer enough. It would also be good to be able to recall previous sessions from a list.

Hi please consider implementing midi clock receive as Ableton link is not solid at all, plus how to sync with logic? I have no good way to sync it and would like to use my erm multiclock but cannot. Whole thing is a bit obsolete for me if I can’t sync it properly with computer

Just incredible

I’ve been using AUM for a couple of years now and I’ve come to find it indispensable in my workflow. It’s a highly innovative, supremely well thought out, entirely stable piece of software. Not to mention well supported and maintained over time (and that’s not a given when it comes to iOS music apps). Just a great idea executed to perfection - top marks!

Never stop please

Every now and again a developer of quality creates something that changes the landscape of music making on iOS. I use it almost everyday as part of my creation chain. Having begun life recording onto tape it’s absolutely incredible to see and imagine what you can do with an app that brings it all together, and the critical part … in a way that isn’t complicated or unnecessarily technical. All to often tech people engineers like to design things that tickle their intellects and brains but really most musicians just want to focus on making music tbh and having things that are easy to use and do the job well or in this case brilliantly. Solid product and solid customer support. Both things in this maddeningly crazy time in short supply. Never stop doing this please.

Ill Keep This Short… ish…

AUM is excellent. I’ve been using their other app, AudioShare for years (which is also top drawer) and never thought I needed AUM until now. It can be as simple or as complexed as you want and the interface is smooth and responsive. I think of it as a big mixer. It automatically saves each track I record in Audioshare too which is great for me. I bought it as an alternative to Cubasis etc and I’m so glad I did. Just buy it.

Almost a must have.

If youre happy working entirely in cubasis or nanostudio or any other such DAW.. or maybe you just play with a synth, you might not need this. But.. if like many ios musicians you like jamming, running a few apps together, routing midi around and using various effects all at once.. you need AUM. Its a stable host, will record itself in a synced manner, it has syncable audiofile players (think long or short loops or one shots.. however you like.. also midi triggerable). It saves its session state.. its a capable production workstation with the right choice of apps. I'll sequence different synths with Drambo or Digikeys, add eq and effect each synth, use some fx busses etc. Pure Acid runs on multiple outs in this. Its the closest thing to having a hardware mixer and midi hub to connect all your virtual dynths together. The faders and other functions are midi mapable, making it automatable, but its still indispensible for me when used in a simple manner.. just maybe running a synth and a drum machine for a quick jam. It does auv3 and iaa.. its terrific.

Great but not without its issues

My main issue is getting hardware to work with it. The midi controls work, but no mackie, or hui control means lights and indicators don’t function properly on my hardware (Korg NanoKontrol Studio).

I can get cubasis working through AUM by routing channels and that allows me to perform all the functions I need to through cubasis (arming + selecting tracks, transport functions, levels, pan, etc.), and the lights work as expected.

Without AUM in the mix, everything works fine in Cubasis, but with the above setup, after about 10 minutes, the lights stop responding and the iPad requires a full reboot to get things going again. I’m not sure if this is a cubasis, or a kymatica thing, but it would be great if someone looked into this, it’s a very common controller made for iOS.

The cubasis guys are friendly and happy to work with others to solve issues. If you’d like more info, I’ll check back to this review in the coming weeks and will be happy to provide more info upon request.

Essential for iOS musicians!

If you want to make music on your iPad, Aum is the gateway that will allow you to get the best from it! I’m not the most technically minded (and I’m not that interested in the technical side of things to be honest) but this allows me to connect my guitars and keyboards to some pretty wonderful apps! It also allows me to ‘play’ or programme all kinds of virtual instruments, connect things together, build tracks, etc. If you have any interest in making music on iOS, just buy this - you won’t regret it!

Huge midi latency with Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3rd gen

This app is great but it needs a way to slave the midi, or at least a way to offset the midi clock as I’m experiencing a huge latency of about 50ms with my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3rd gen on an iPad Pro 2020 that makes the midi sync completely unusable

Can’t see my interface as a usb device

GREAT app for using iOS apps but when I plug my Roland Rubix 22

Interface into my iPad Pro 2018 usb-c AUM only recognises it as a microphone input and not USB ? Therefore can’t control levels etc .

It simply works brilliantly

I bought this after struggling to get a free app with my audio interface to work. It just wouldn’t work. However AUM saw my interface immediately and worked straight away.

In my title i said it simply works, but it is not a simple product. It took several hours of wrestling and finally reading the help file to get things working the way i wanted, but when i did it was brilliant. It is powerful and works well. I highly recommend if your struggling with other apps. This is the business.

I hadn’t previously left a review for AUM as it’s basically essential and a very fair price but having reached out to the developer at 8.00pm on a Sunday night ( about an os14.0 bug, not kymatica’s fault)and receiving a reply and solution within the hour I felt I should mention the sterling customer support.

AUM is my starting point every time, its just a mixer, then you quickly realise if you have multiple apps it all you need and everything you need. Apematrix and Audiobus work well, whereas AUM is near flawless.

An essential tool for iOS music making.

Allows you to connect your music apps in all kinds of creative ways. More suited to live performance than linear editors like Cubasis which are more production oriented. Even without any additional hardware such as MIDI controllers, it is excellent for live use, but if you have extra gear it will connect with that too.

Clever, but I'm not sure..

Another review here said that if one uses daws like nanostudio then one might not need this. I'm one of those nanostudio users and I can't help but think they were correct. In nanostudio i can do a lot of what i want in the app itself; reasonably finished tracks that can be enjoyed by me and maybe others. Apps like aum don't gel with my particular current workflow, it is what it is. Reading up or watching on what other users do with this app (amounting to some kind of convoluted digital spaghetti junction) just hurts my head..

ps- unfairly calling for my review to be deleted is pretty low of you or whoever did it ... now i can only wonder why there are 99.99% positive reviews only, because anything less than glowing gets blanked? I paid for this, dont forget!

Anyone wanting to make music on a iPad will want this. You probably knew that already. What can be done on an iPad is astonishing. Use AUM to bring together inter app audio, Audio Units and MIDI. Add AU effects and mix.

AUM is the landscape everything else happens in

Whatever music you make, AUM is *the* essential app for making it on IOS. Used to traditional DAWs, e.g. Cubasis, (which AUM seamlessly integrates with, btw), at first I didn't get why I needed this. But I find those DAWS more or less force you into thinking verse chorus, drum loop etc... Fine if EDM or singer songwriter is your thing but...

...These days, my hardware and PC DAW lie neglected and almost all my creation takes place inside AUM, on an IPad Air 2018. AUM's simplicity and flexibility as a host for IAA and AUv3 apps, for patching and routing audio and midi signals, and especially it's ability to record and loop in-app or external audio from anything, to pull in clips from AudioShare and even weird soft 'toy' apps like Dr. Om which are hard to use musically otherwise enable thinking outside of the box for both song structure peeps and people (like me) more comfortable with experimental, ambient flows. Match it up with Photon AU and/or Atom MIDI recorders and something like Quantum or Xequence to generate capture MIDI on the fly and you can dial up your own bespoke DAW, channel by channel, a veritable one-stop-shop studio on a tablet. Superb.

I'm just hoping for an in-AUM Cubasis style channel automation and snapshot state saving update, and then AUM will be perfect.

An essential must have for any iPad musician whether it’s for live performance or connecting various other AUv3 apps with its grid connection matrix to jam out loops and ideas or even whole tracks. It’s an incredible piece of design and very intuitive to use and every new update keeps making it better and better...and not forgetting the excellent tech support from the developer.

Indispensable

Always the first app I open when I start any session. Incredibly simple to use, totally reliable and a perfect platform for any kind of musical connection. This app is so useful and a such an ideal blank palette for experimentation that if I were to lose 80% of my music apps, as long as I could still use AUM, I'd consider it a fair trade! Literally the only app on the appstore that I would unreservedly say, 'just buy it', regardless of what music / noise you wish to make. The recent February 2019 updates made it even more user useful and I reckon this app is going to get better and better. Much love!

Build your own DAW

I’m a bit late to the party here having thought that just working in a traditional DAW was the best approach. What AUM gives is the best mixer with routing and MIDI mapping on iOS. Nothing else comes close. Add in the sequencers of your choice which there are many on iOS and you have an inspirational live playground.

Great iOS tool

Very impressive.

The only thing I really find lacking is some kind of global snapshots. So for instance I could save different global states containing different Rozeta patterns etc as snapshots (connected to various instruments) and use AUM snapshots to fluidly switch between chords and patterns across all tracks simultaneously. With both ‘instant’ and ‘next bar sync’ settings for snapshot switch. Currently I find myself mostly stuck in one key/chord in AUM jams as there’s no real way to switch all tracks/instruments at once.... hopefully this kind of thing can be addressed in future updates.

Also I’m struggling to find a simple way to toggle bypass on/off for insert fx? But I might find the answer to that when I finally read the manual....

Incredibly useful

I use this app regularly live. It has enabled me more than ever to not bring a laptop to gigs for even relatively complex custom live setups involving multiple synths/fx and looping and external audio. Of course processor power will limit what you can do, and you need to be careful about zombie copies of other audio apps in memory, but on a fast iPad the possibilities are mind boggling if you have an arsenal of (stable and efficient) IAA or AU or audiobus apps. Its own recording capabilities are useful and interesting, plus the developer's own audio apps (such as reverb/delay and other experimental apps) are mostly wonderful.

Beautiful design, comprehensive function

I bought this to run synths alongside Bias FX and Yonac Tonestack but for some reason AUM does not recognise Tonestack as a main source. The work around us using it as an insert and then all is good. Stunning looking and intuitive GUI, comprehensive routing options and grouping. Seriously impressive.

... if you struggled with the often cumbersome workflow on iOS for audio, this is about as good as it can get - given the almost infinite options for routing and integration, the thoughtfully planned and delivered UI remains simple Amd probably the best example I've seen on IOS so far.
