Terrible app

Too much useless information, not enough important date. Eg where does it indicate how much battery charge remains? Buried in som menu somewhere I’m sure but certainly not intuitive. Too much marketing, not enough effort at simplifying the app to give the essentials. Still can’t find how I add a black coffee to my daily intake - it’s actually missing of the long list of obscure drinks!

Smart in Design - Terrible in Use

I had the original bottle which worked flawlessly, unfortunately I dropped it and the puck no longer stayed in. So I bought the 2nd generation, what a backwards step. It tracks drinks when it feels like it; which is not very often. There is also no background app refresh. The bottle disconnects after a short time so you could finish a whole bottle, refill and that whole bottle is not logged.

Many emails back and forth with support which acknowledge this is an issue but dont publish this. Now have stopped responding.

Colorblind Mode?

I like this app - it’s good, it syncs with my bottle fine… but I’m color blind. I’ve no clue what the status circle means? Is it red? Green? Orange??? What’s that mean - please bring back the ‘disconnected’, ‘synced’ etc tags next to it. Thank you.

Poor software

Had issues with the firmware update but the bottle was working fine. Since the latest update, the app crashes as soon as it is launched. Bottle is a nice idea, but I would advise others to use another cheaper form of tracking.

Features to Add

App is great but needs the following to be perfect!

1. Force Sync and detail of when last synced with the bottle - often my bottle doesn’t sync even if connected!

2. Current estimated liquid in the bottle, useful if you can’t wait for the bottle to flash it’s been refilled or to let you know if it needs to be recalibrated!

Fantastic hardware ruined by illogical firmware/software

Bottle is top quality, but does not solve issue of prompting you to drink unless you literally sit and watch it all day long. At best, it will only flash briefly once an hour if you are behind your target, so if you’re not looking at it at this specific time, it will look like you don’t need to drink. I was massively behind target and whenever I looked at it, it stayed off with no indication I should drink. It needs to just stay on even if this means 1 or 2 day power rather than 10+ otherwise what is the point?

Other minor issues are despite paying for premium you can only customise 1 of the 3 glow types. Also, help guides are clearly out of date as describe locations of buttons in app that simply are not there so must be an older design. Really disappointed by something that could so easily be so great and life changing.

Flaky and unstable

The app is ok when it decides to work, but I'm fed up of the bottle not connecting to bluetooth and the app frequently telling me that it is disconnected. As of today, the app won't even open, despite being rebooted. At this rate I'll be exploring a refund for the subscription and just using the flask as a "dumb" water bottle.

Nice idea but drops sync

As above - the sync drops out out at least 3-6 times a day and have to reset the bottles - and I say bottles as we brought one for the whole family and each one of them has had issues. Waited for support to get back and as yet nothing from them. As an expensive item, the customer service and actual use, i would recommend.

You just issued an update that still has not fixed the Apple Watch.

The app is unusable on Apple Watch. It also spacing issues the whole screen goes off the bottom on both the standard 45 mil and Apple Watch ultra. I’m not sure about the small one. I’ve never had the opportunity to look. Please fix this!!

UPDATE at 1 year

Love just as much as I always did. It is absolutely great, sync is as flawless as always, and with a new bottle or two, I just wish all other smart tech was this good.

LOVE LOVE LOVE. The new tracking style for liquid is brilliant. This is a health app, AND device, that has genuinely been great. It’s easily fits in my life, because nothing has changed except I’m now more Hidrated. Not all health apps, devices, or habits stick as easily as this. The app - tracking drinking via the Pro or Legacy (HidrateSpark 3) bottles is utterly seamless. The technology is literally perfect. You don’t do anything, you don’t have to open the app, press any buttons, it just works. Even when the phone and bottle are not in proximity to each other, it just syncs up next time. I only wish other companies did such a good job. My only complaint is the app background is the same picture it’s been for ages. It feels dated and I’d love a more modern looks that fits with the iOS aesthetic. A small thing is the scheme of things. The bottle - I use the Legacy bottle and find it excellent. It does use a battery, but it lasts for months and months. My partner has the new Pro which is rechargeable, but doesn’t seem to last nearly as long and notifications to charge are few and far between. I love that there are spare parts for the bottle, which is important, these things are not indended to be disposable.

This app is a tragedy

This app never works. Goals don’t update and hydration levels are not syncing. The app recognises I drunk 2 litres of 2.5l goal but it only counts 1% of my daily intake causing the bottle to constantly glow and drain all its battery. It used to be good but now it’s awful. I will throw away my bottle and buy a more reliable product because of this app

Bottle cost v app

When you have bought a bottle, the app is good, but all the good stuff is behind a paywall.

You need a subscription to actually make the device useful.

They are now charging £15 a year for a feature that should have been included with the device - I.e. being able to log other drinks not drunk with the Hidrate bottle itself. It is obviously ridiculous to assume that everything the user drinks is drunk though the Hidrate bottle, and the device is basically useless if you can’t log other drinks, since it will never be close to accurate. This means you have to pay for a yearly subscription on a device that is already expensive to get a feature that actually makes the device usable.

Other than logging other drinks, the rest of the “premium” features are just there to try and justify the upgrade - wallpapers and glow studio are frankly utterly pointless and do not actually add any value to the product. Asking a subscription for this is daylight robbery. At very least this feature should be unlocked with a one time purchase, or people who purchase the bottle should receive the first year or two included with the purchase price.

I've had my bottle for about a year and a half. It was a gift, when I received it I paid for the access to the Glow Studio to change the colour of the lights on my Hydratespark Pro bottle. I went to use it to change the colours the other day and discovered this feature is now behind a monthly paywall subscription! So what happened to the premium feature I paid for and use before? It seems I have been robbed as I cannot see a restore purchases button anywhere, the feature I paid money to use before has been stolen and put behind a monthly paywall. Daylight robbery by this company.

Find my bottle?

Just bought the Hidrate pro steel and there is no option to track it, has this been removed. The setup was bad, recalibrated 10times without it tracking water drinking. Finally did a reset and seems to be working. Instructions are non existent only 1 youtube video available for setup. Wish I never bought it, such a waste of money

The emperor’s new app

This app is required if you splashed out on a Hidrate water bottle, but you can only records certain types of drinks if you pay… not a one-off fee, but an annual subscription?

Want to add water = free.

Want to add sparkling water = £15/year.

Want to add juice = £15/year.

Want to add white wine = £15/year.

Do you get personal diet coaching or fascinating articles about hydration? Of course not. You get 30 “colourful wallpaper” for the app and a “hydration score”.

I don’t mind subscription fees when they offer good value for money, but the £15/year fee is pathetic for what they offer. I implore you not to pay it and let the app go out of business if it’s not viable. Don’t encourage subscription fees for the most basic of features.

Great for helping me to drink enough water but some basics missing

I bought the bottle after dehydration related health problems, because I honestly just forget and then grossly over estimate how much water I have had.

The app does help with that a lot, but I feel it would benefit from synching with things like MyFitnessPal (I have it synched to health but it will not send this data through so directly connecting would be great.)

However, the biggest thing that the app needs is a battery percentage indicator for bottle in the app. If you are a forgetful person, having this info would be so helpful. Please please add this to an update!

This company is a total disgrace. You pay a huge premium for the bottle, download the app only to find most things behind a paywall. Want to add soda instead of water? Pay £35 a year. Want to change the light colour on your bottle? Pay £35 a year. Want to change the wallpaper in the app? Pay £35 a year. It’s absolutely ridiculous they charge for these basic functions. Avoid this greedy, money hungry company.

Quite Buggy

The bottle is great, and I like the app as it helps me monitor my water intake to ensure I’m drinking enough. However the app can be buggy, sometimes not loading on startup, or taking a very long time. Quite often the challenges in the social tab don’t show up, then they just reappear. Other times the achievements don’t pop, or are not actually tracking my progress as the % completed is totally wrong. These issues are not blockers for me, but they are preventing me from giving this a 5 star rating.

Isn’t worth the money

I like the idea of a smart bottle and when I bought it 3+ years ago, this purchase seemed reasonable. Now you want me to pay for subscription while the bottle is already expensive, it doesn’t make any sense and it makes me think of alternative products. Also it’s hard to wash the bottle, it can get mold and it’s impossible to get rid of it which is a huge disadvantage.

Bottle not cheap, now subscription too

On my fourth bottle but won’t be getting a fifth - new subscription model means I can’t access things that were a given, like recording different drink types, and even things I already paid extra for like Glow Studio.

I have some things where the hardware is free or very subsidised but I pay a subscription, and others where the hardware costs what it costs but you get most features for free. Not keen to keep using something that wants both.

Good but not great

I’ve been using my bottle and the app for a while now and wanted to wait for a bit before leaving a review. Initially all worked great but more and more recently there have been sync issues causing me to have to remove and re-add the bottle completely as the recalibrate bottle option seems to disappear every time my bottle stops syncing. Thats really my only complaint, well that and the sensor makes the bottle quite unstable and prone to falling over quite easily. Apart from that, all good.

Love! Looking forward to updates!

Currently loving the bottle and app!! Overall it is great! There are a few things I wish they will change later on, such as selecting different colours for different notifications. So it will flash when you take a drink compared to the colour to remind you to drink. I was hoping for this feature to already be available considering I got their newest model but hopefully they will add it in the future!!

I find it ridiculous to pay for a bottle to track your liquid intake and still need to pay a subscription to do it... The most surprising is that you need to pay to change the color of the light of your 100 pounds bottle. I'm a pretty sure that in few years there will be good alternative to this app /product

Bottle is great, and has helped me start drinking water again, but the updated version of the app took away the old way of displaying hourly progress and the trophy awards system is bugged meaning trophies aren’t always awarded as they should be. Help team also takes too long to respond. Would have given more stars for the previous app version

Great bottle and the app is good however this review is mostly based on the need for subscription just to add more liquid type, wallpaper and more colour glow customisation (yes you have to pay a subscription to customise the glow)…. The bottle is already quite expensive for what it is. This would have been a 5 star if we have the full feature set for the app without the need of subscription.

Random changes make app unreliable

Out of nowhere they downgrade coffee from 90% hydration to 60%. Did a tea drinker do this? With the hideously inflexible drinks list which doesn’t let you add your own drinks but gives space over to their own energy drinks, this app is just getting less and less useful - time to reverse engineer the Bluetooth protocol the spark bottles use so I can take control back of my liquid intake.

Great bottle

Never have I felt more encouraged to drink and stay hidrated. This was gifted to me and I absolutely love it! My only suggestion would be to allow us to add different types of drinks to the drink list, like (hot) chocolate or matcha which I just add as coffees for now, otherwise completely recommend. The app is very self-explanatory and easy to use, visually too after the latest update is quite pleasant to the eye. Just be aware that the other types of drinks (listed in the app) are only available in the US, so if you don’t live there you can’t purchase them (or at least I haven’t been able to find them).

Draining phone battery

I have had my hidrate bottle for 6 months and has been absolutely fine. However, since the recent app update, it’s now draining my phone battery. The app keeps running in the background even tho I have the app closed. I have since had to remove the app so I can use my phone for more than a day. Not sure what has happened in the recent app update but something has changed.

The update is terrible and numbers cannot be seen and are changing into dots… please fix. Otherwise this is a fabulous bottle and app.

I did have a problem with syncing but it was my fault using both my phone and iPad. Bluetooth is either connected to one or the other messing up syncing. Just add the app to one device and you will be fine.

Within the app itself there is nothing to complain about. However the widget for the app simply does not work, and hasn’t done for months. Please fix this!!!

Love the bottle - app could be better

The Hidrate bottle is a grad addition to my daily routine. It gives me the confidence to know if I’m drinking enough water and feedback to keep me on track.

The app is functional and provides meaningful information on water intake, goal progress and some gamification. Where it falls short is in its ease of access and feedback about the bottles battery levels. It would be great to have a percentage charged so I knew when I needed to power up the bottle’s puck.

App seems to work well, but design is a bit meh

The app works well and tracks water well, including syncing to HealthKit.

However, the design of the app could do with some work. It feels very lost in the modern iOS design language.

Ok but needs work

Can’t edit drink types or even rename one, bit cheeky they charge extra to customise the lights given how much you just spent on the bottle, lack of good integration with other apps. To many ads pushing their bottles at you I know they make them I have one, ads should be disabled once you add a bottle

Great product but the app is glitchy

Love the ability to track as I drink and the bottle is a fantastic product. However today the bottle won’t sync at all and even trying to manually add intake isn’t working. Keeps reverting back to the previous amount. Such a shame.

Good smart bottle

Good smart bottle records really well. Seems to keep water nice and Cold. Can’t find the glow studio to customise the colours nothing in the app to allow you to do this as advertised and location is turned on and doesn’t show up on any map so again not as advertised so bit disappointed with these 2 features not there.

Edit. Ok so got the glow studio to work expensive for just customise 2 colours.

But location all turned on but still no map for located bottle! Any help please.

Update broken again

An update broke the app just before Christmas. An update then fixed the crashing issue which was unfortunately followed by another update that reintroduced it

I appreciate that testing the app in all possible devices is difficult, but it is possible. What’s most most annoying is that the devices with the crashing issue have at the very least not been retested with the subsequent update

As for the bottle, steer clear of the steel one (I think they call it “pro”). As a family we own 4 bottles, one of which is the steel one. It’s unstable on its base from poor quality machining. Not something you’d expect from a premium bottle

More Glow Options

Love my water bottle and really enjoying the seamless logging through the app, works really well, nicely designed and love the social aspect, pushing me more to want to hit my goal.

I paid for the in-app purchase which unlocks the studio, giving you the ability to customise the led colours. This is nice, but I was hoping for more customisation, such as being able to select a custom illumination pattern. I think the whole colour options and UI could be improved. The rainbow light is great and shows off what the leds are capable of as each led is displaying a different colour. It would be fantastic to have this ability rather than having every led illuminate with the same colour that transitions to another colour.

The picker UI could be a doughnut shape divided into sections for each led in the bottle (like a top down view), you could then choose the colour or colours for each led in the circle and then choose from different illumination patterns. This would be amazing and would really justify the in-app purchase price, which is otherwise quite expensive for such limited functionality.

Not as accurate as I’d like

I’ve had my Hidrate 3 for approximately 12 months, and even though I’ve followed all the tips the app still records less water than consumed. This is fine if you still go for your target, as you will be drinking more than you need to.

It would be good if the app showed the target to the current time.

Ok but status of the bottle could be better

The app is quite good in terms of recording and displaying how you’re doing at meeting your daily target for water consumption. The big thing that lets this app down is the status of the bottle in terms of connectivity and battery life and charging time - there is almost nothing to tell youbetween having a full battery and then almost empty battery because the indicator doesn’t change until you’re almost out of battery. It doesn’t appear in your power list either to check battery life. And when charging it, you only the indicator it’s fully charged when there are solid LED lights displaying and no notification, even though it remains connected to my phone Even when charging

Would be good to see the battery percentage so I can plan a charge rather than the battery just going flat and then having to charge it would be even better if I could see the battery on the Apple battery widget

Great concept and execution

I’m drinking more water because of the bottle. Tried tracking my water intake previously manually but let’s be honest, that gets boring quick. The connected bottle makes it easy!

One request though, I’d love to be able to do manual adds using Siri. Waterminder is an iOS app that allows this very well, any chance you could ‘borrow’ some of their ideas and integrate into the app?

Poor

If my bottle hadn’t been a Christmas present I would have returned it ! Doesn’t glow to remind me to drink and 2 days in and way behind my goal have had no reminders either. The app doesn’t reliably change the glow to the selected colour and at the price of this bottle to pay extra to customise colours is a ripoff.

The weight of the bottle and having to keep resetting makes it more convenient to use a normal bottle and note how many times you fill it

Life saver

I’ve received a kidney transplant 10years ago. To keep it functioning I have to consume 5ltr of water per day it’s such a pain to keep track of what you consume or not! Only just started using this device but seems to be functioning perfect. I’m sure will make my life a lot easier in the future and will recommend to my specialist !

Best bottle/app combo

I’m not normally motivated to write an app review, but one of the notifications that just came through may or may not have been a Father Ted reference and if it was, it deserves kudos.

Besides that, though, I love the bottle and the app. If I were to offer constructive criticism, I’d recommend the developers take a look at WaterMinder and the way water and other liquids are logged on it for non HidrateSpark swigs - particularly on the watch app.

That’s minor though, the app and bottle are both equally great. Might look at getting one for the missus too.

Awesome concept - app could be made even more awesome!

I tried the app without the bottle for a few days and then immediately ordered the bottle. It’s fantastic. I was expecting the bottle to freak out when I had it in the car door pocket sloshing around but it didn’t! The app is great, I’d encourage anyone to give the app a try for a few days and see the difference, but just a few suggestions:

1) I’d love Apple Watch compatibility with a compilation on my watch face to keep an eye on my intake there too.

2) The app doesn’t seem to adjust the goal up frequently enough. For example I’ll be on goal, take a walk at 18:00 but the app won’t recognise I need to drink more due to activity till about 21:00. This has happened a couple of times.

3) I have a set few cups and glasses I use and I know the capacity of. I’d love it if I could add custom containers on the manually add page to be able to quickly add what I’ve consumed outside the bottle.

Combines hardware and software

A rare treat to use and meticulously designed for the hardware (water bottle) and software to work together. Often the case when buying hardware the app falls short but this is a delight to use and drinking enough water reaps many benefits.

I treated myself to the water bottle after reading the book Atomic Habits. I wanted to cultivate a new habit to drink more water. The visual cues of the bottle with the automatic tracking make it easy and effortless which is the hallmarks of implementing new habits if you want to be successful.

I also love the personalisation of how much water I should be drinking. I realise being 6ft6 I am a lot taller than the average which of course means I should be drinking more than the average. With this personalised daily hydration figure I am able to finally know how much I should be drinking.

Works great alone but with their bottle it’s even greater!

I’m terrible at hydrating so like any 21st century male I turned to tech to help me solve the problem. I started with the app only and whilst I had to manually add the times I drank, simply doing that was enough to make me do it even though I had to take time out to do it.

Then I bought the bottle and everything now is very straight forward and less cumbersome and the amount I am drinking is super accurate. I get flies on the bottle to remind me and I get notifications through the app too. I cannot fail to hydrate! I’m very happy with the app and bottle combo and I am fully hydrated every day!

Hidrate is my Mate

Wow what can I say about this bottle and App , since purchasing this bottle my water intake has quadrupled! With the App and the reminders it sends to your phone and the reminder flashing light in the bottle helps you to keep hydrated, my water intake used to be poor and I always used to get headaches , but not any more the combination of the bottle and App has helped me , great work Hidrate

Excellent app

I’m actually using the app as a stand-alone method of tracking my water intake as I need to drink more water.

The app is well written and actually features a watch app that works and is useful (making it much easier to log drinks).

I’m actually interested in trying out the water bottle but can’t find a simple way of getting one here in the UK so meanwhile I am happy using the app standalone.

One change I would make:

Rather than only having 7 day streaks they should be continuous. This gives added motivation to keep long streaks unbroken.
