Good news poor interface

I like the i, the news is succinct, articulate and reasonably unbiased.
The same can’t be said of the iOS app. On my iPhone SE2 it is a chore to use. The default page size is too small to read, so always has to be enlarged. Scrolling between pages often fails, and requires several swipes to get to the next page.
This is too much effort when compared to other newspaper apps. Perhaps a little investment in the interface is needed.
Fortunately, my subscription was only a week’s trial.

Absolutely bloody shocking

Subscribed via the i news website. Charged me £49.99. Downloaded the app but it won’t let me use it as it wants a subscriber ID which you only get if you have the print edition. Seems the only way to get the app working is to subscribe AGAIN through iTunes but then they want another payment for doing that. Raised a ticket through their support email and they haven’t bothered answering. Complete bloody rip off. Avoid.

Good but irritating at times

The newspaper is fantastic, no complaints there. This app, in comparison with the idigital app (subscription via the App Store) is clunky. Downloading every day is slow and hit and miss. Sometimes I get repeated “failed to load timeline - retry”, even if I’ve downloaded earlier in the day. Using the download icon rarely shows anything happening and on random occasions I find it’s downloaded in the background. That doesn’t mean you can read the paper though as, I assume, there is an account authentication in the background and if you are offline it won’t load the pages.
I also find that when I try to send a page to someone to read they only receive the left hand pages even if I sent both!
I recognise that you get more for your subscription than via the App Store, and all the money goes to inews rather than a chunk to apple but at least when you downloaded the paper you saw it download and it stays on the device for as long as you choose. With this app, even looking back at yesterday’s paper, which allegedly has been downloaded, requires a complete new download process with authentication which is slow and cumbersome. Surely it can be better than this?
On the plus side it’s good to have a complete week’s puzzles available which means if you miss a day you can catch up. Needless to say the journalism is great.

Poor download

Recently my inews fails to download fully. I only get 50% of editions though my subscription is up to date. This is disappointing as the I newspaper is of high standard and unbiased. I have tried using different internet connections. Support seems to be non existent as my requests have been ignored.

I used to be a fan of the older version of this app. The update (July 22) is takes it further. Attractive, intuitive, very easy to navigate. The best newspaper just got better!

A well balanced newspaper

It is well laid out with an index on each page. It is ok to find important items quickly or read in depth when time allows.
I like pages 2 & 3 with quote for the day, birthdays and anniversary items. Some of the surveys are entertaining.

Great Value for Money

I had been reading the print edition, but when we were in lock-down decided to try the internet edition instead. What can I say, the same content, an app which is straightforward and easy to use, and the i for £4.99 a month (that’s just over 0.19p per day).
I had tried subscriptions to other online newspapers, but chose the i for its content and more in-depth articles, which provide all the news that I require.
What is not to like ?

The content is good. The app however needs work. The page turning mechanic is seriously flawed and often takes several attempts to turn a page. This is very irritating.

No IPhone suitable presentation format

App displays pictures of the papers pages.
There is no option to select a suitable readable format that works on a 6.5 inch phone screen.
With digital publishing software it should be very simple to have a presentation that is suitable for reading on the phone screen.
As it is with endless zooming, after 5 minutes of use this app is intolerable on a phone, and I have already cancelled my subscription and deleted this app.
Probably ok on a large iPad screen.

Don’t bother; a great disappointment.

This subscription to The I is far cheaper than the Times or Telegraph. It doesn’t take long to work out why. The content, although well written, is limited compared to these other newspapers’, something that is to be expected. But it is the app that’s the real let down. In fact it doesn’t really warrant the label ‘app’, being no more than a pdf of the newspaper. It is not possible to interact with the items and when enlarged on an iPad screen the print becomes out of focus.
It’s a half- hearted attempt to create a digital presence by publisher and only goes to prove the old saying that you get what you pay for. I very quickly cancelled my subscription.

Love the Paper, Hate the App

I love the I Newspaper. It’s content is concise but unbiased which is difficult to find in a newspaper. However, since switching to the digital version, I have to see that the app is dreadful. I find it frustrating at times trying to move from page to page. I read a few magazines online and the I app is the worst. What a shame the paper is let down by such a poor app.

On line copy editions of puzzles

I get infuriated with the thing looking for updates. If I have been called away from the machine and didn’t finish the crossword say, the app searches for updates and I then have to wait for it all to settle down before going back to the puzzle.
How about a “hold” button?
Otherwise excellent!

It’s an ok app, but that’s all

This is a review of the app, not the newspaper which I enjoy reading.
I use the app to read the i when I am not home. It is basically a pdf reader as there is no ability to select specific articles to read. I cannot easily scroll through the pages but have to keep going to the overview to move between pages. If I didn’t have the print subscription I would not bother.

Great content, great to read but a couple of niggles

Great, unbiased journalism and superb value for money
This is the ideal way to access the i: far more environmentally friendly than a paper copy and the puzzles are much more satisfying to complete this way.
However, there are a couple of real annoyances – at least on my first generation iPad Pro 12.9”.
First, and bizarrely, upon opening certain sections of the paper –puzzles particularly – any audio, e.g. BBC Sounds is paused and muted, requiring an infuriating task switching dance. Especially annoying with live radio.
Second, swiping can just stop working for no apparent reason. Sometimes, but not always, zooming in and out can help. Really irritating!
Overall, however, a very good way of accessing first-class and in-depth journalism.

Great app except for puzzles

Constant restoring of subscription is awful

This is a decent enough app for the money, but you have to restore your purchases every few days - effectively revalidate your subscription once or twice a week. It’s the only app I’ve come across that requires this and it’s a massive pain in the backside

Inflexible

The app is great, though takes a while to download. It also appears to require active daily download - it isn’t sat ready to go in the morning.
HOWEVER (the reason why it only attracts 3 stars), I frequently work abroad (especially since COVID). On numerous occasions I have attempted to cancel my rolling subscription for a couple of months. No luck. I have received an email asking me to contact the provider by telephone. Cancelling this subscription is not top of my list when preparing for travel.
Despite numerous previous attempts to cancel prior to travel, these have all failed. This has resulted in me deciding to cancel for good.
Just a salutary warning.

Digital Daily News via i.

Started to subscribe to the digital Edition of i at the start of the first lockdown, it allowed me to keep reading my favourite newspaper. Took a bit of time to learn how to navigate my way round it and even now following an article spanning two pages can be tricky. The ability to enlarge the text is helpful at times. Great that some of the puzzles are included digitally, wish they all were or at least the general knowledge crossword at the weekend. With a monthly subscription of less than a fiver, a printed edition will be regarded as an occasional indulgence. I consider the i to be the best balanced newspaper out there.

Sharp page images and easy navigation

Good clear text makes for easy reading and in poor light its perfect. Even when it would be too dark to read the printed edition the app is fine. Back editions are deleted so memory is not taken up over time but they can be reloaded if the need arrises.
The puzzles and crosswords are all catered for and work smoothly. Navigation is by thumbnail images to jump to a specific page or simply going forward or back a page at a time. Highly recommended.

Great Content; Pity it’s Not Supported by a Great App

I subscribe to the ‘I’ on an annual basis via the Apple Store; I switched over when the “I’s” own subscription platform went into meltdown a little over a year ago. The journalistic content is brilliant but the App renders it almost unreadable. On my iPad Pro, the ability to swipe from one page to another has been hit and miss for sometime but is now virtually impossible. The only way to read the paper is by selecting each page from the Home Screen, which is rather tedious. Unless the situation improves, I will not renew my subscription when it falls due.

Difficult to read on phone, was prevented from accessing.

I found it difficult to navigate around the paper on a phone format, there was another app called i News UK which seemed to be aimed more at phone viewing, but that seemed to require an additional subscription ?
In any case, after a while, this app seemed to stop allowing me access to the paper saying I wasn’t a subscriber, which I was, but I’m not now as I’ve cancelled it. Probably £1.49 a week would have been ok, if it was easier to access on a phone (or at all).

Customer support does not support customers

Absolute rubbish customer support. The family sharing does not work with an annual subscription, so I did what the help section said and e mailed customer support and they just reply stating I need to contact customer support?
Will be finding a different news source as soon as this subscription ends.

Newspaper is great but app needs work

The i newspaper really is great and for £5 a month the subscription is exceptionally good value!
The app, however, does need a bit of work. On iPhone and smaller iPads it seems to work fine but on the 12.9 iPad Pro the page doesn't fit the screen properly and swiping left and right to previous and next pages will randomly just stop working at times. Re-rendering the text when you zoom in would be nice too as it can get a bit fuzzy. Pressreader is a good example of how it should all work properly but sadly i isn't available there.
As another reviewer has said, technology is slightly letting the paper down but don't let the app put you off, the newspaper is a great read and well worth the subscription.

Changing to monthly payment

I enjoy reading the i on my iPad each day. However I am on a weekly subscription and would like to change to a monthly one. I can’t find any way of doing this. Certainly on this App there is nothing to explain what to do. The same would apply if I wanted to cancel this subscription which I would have to do if I wanted the monthly one. Has anyone any idea how to do this? Many thanks.

The I on line

When lockdown struck, I felt forced to get the I online. At first, I have to admit that I was not that keen but now, I would not change back to the paper copy. It is a joy knowing that it is waiting for me as soon as I get up. My only criticism is that I just cannot do the cryptic crossword online, I need a paper copy to scribble on. I have a friend who has a paper copy of the i and each day he sends me an email of his crossword. I can understand why you do not want the whole paper copied but is it possible to allow just certain puzzles to be copied, or is or already possible and I do not know how to do it!
As for the paper, still the best paper by far. Well done!

OK but pages sometimes missing

Generally a good way of reading the paper but sometimes the download has pages missing. Today the first of the TV pages is completely absent and other pages are missing from the thumbnails but present if you scroll the full pages. Quality control of the download content is inconsistent and needs improving.

Terrible for at for iPhone

Bought this app expecting something similar to other digital edition papers. How wrong I was. This isn’t fit to view on an iPhone (i have an extra large screen). You have to zoom in to each article and the text is still too small for me to read.
Until this is adapted properly for digital reading, I don’t recommend it one bit. Shame as I was keen to try the paper itself. Requested refund as I can view it.

Please fix the reloading / losing page issue

I love the app & the paper. I’d just really love it, if every time I came back to continue reading the paper I’m currently on it didn’t reload back to the home screen. It’s just irritating and a waste of time losing the page you are currently reading every time. Hope this is something that can be fixed. I checked the settings and turned off automatic download option.

Useable on iPad only

Quite useable on iPad (although it does wobble around on the screen a bit) - and the dedicated puzzles section is superb.
However, trying to read this on an iPhone is nearly impossible as it is simply too small and does not scale to the size of the screen
However to put this in context just compare the subscription price to that of the Times or Telegraph!!

The i has it all

Especially because of the lockdown it is great to get your daily paper.
It’s vital to have access to informed comment about what we are facing. The TV news coverage comes a poor second to the “i “.
I am still getting used to adjusting the print size which is the downside compared to the real thing.
Take care!

Excellent, but could be a bit better

The news is excellent. Layout is fine. 3 minor issues really...
1 - the font could be clearer when zooming in
2 - swiping to the next page really an be a hit and miss affair
3 - double page spreads are split as two pages, so swiping left and right constantly to switch between articles that straddle a page is annoying.
Other than that, all good.

Brilliant App

I have always liked reading the print version of the I but to avoid making an unnecessary visit to the paper shop because of Coronavirus I downloaded the app.

Loving the format

Never thought I would enjoy a digital paper however with the lockdown not at home so papers cancelled. Discovered I online and it’s brilliant. good content, but app a little clunky

I don't know what's involved creating an app for a newspaper that is easy to manipulate, so this critique might be a tad unfair?
I have to keep going back to the home page to move along the pages, which is a bit frustrating.
Having said that, the i is a great read and the online puzzles section is i proving all the time.

Here we go again

Seems like every time The I app sorts out glitches and works happily for a few months, someone thinks it’s time for a really big makeover and changes the whole ruddy thing yet again. I don’t want to relearn how to use it twice a year, I just want to read my paper in the morning with my coffee. Now, it doesn’t arrive, so presumably there are going to be a load of ‘tweaks’ before it’s reliable again.

Disappointing - Puzzles are useless

If you like to do the puzzles found on the left hand page in the weekly edition (e.g. the jigsawdoku in my case) then don’t bother subscribing, they’re not in the puzzle section. Of course I had already paid for a weekly subscription before I discovered this, so cancelled immediately and have wasted £1.49. Also you’re forced to do the limited available puzzles interactively and can’t print them out. The news part is fine.

Checking the crossword.

Similar to a lady who wrote a review. I read the paper daily in England and find it leagues better than the others.
As you say concise and that is what your i paper is.
I’m in Spain for the winter and am so pleased to now be able to read i on line.
Checking the crossword I find a bit of a pain as I have to photograph the answers to yesterday’s crossword on my phone and keep the image open while I find yesterday’s crossword on the iPad..

Crosswords out of sync

The concise and cryptic crosswords are yesterday’s puzzles. If you read the paper the answers are there!
What happened to the pieceword puzzle. It was 4 x 4 but now 3 x 3.
Much too easy. Please revert or even go 5 x 5 !!
End Aug 2019: congratulations for bringing the piece word back to 4x4. Much better.
The newspaper side of the app seems good and does what is required efficiently.
I struggle to understand what is hard about switching off clue answers in the Saturday edition. It continues to make a mockery of the Saturday competition.
Now we’re into October and you are still revealing the answers to the Saturday prize puzzle. Why? What’s the point of a competition if the answers are open on the app. Grrrrrrr
Dec 2019. Good that the pieceword back to 4x4. Too long at 3x3 which is trivial. Saturday crossword STILL revealing answers. Very unprofessional.

i Newspaper

Customer service on the phone helped me when I had a problem. The newspaper is great. Don’t know whether hyperlinks could be included to go straight to articles from contents pages or to quiz answers, or for continuation of stories (eg from back page of sports section). Equally, could videos be linked to appropriate stories?
My only gripe currently is that the Pieceword puzzle, which used to be a nice challenge to complete, has been made smaller (3x3) and can be done literally in a matter of seconds. Please make it bigger again!

Bit flaky sometimes but good customer service.

The app has wobbles where it can’t seem to download content.
The puzzles are well done but unfortunately only a subset of the puzzles in the physical paper. Hopefully they’ll add more soon. Recently realised you can access previous days puzzles digitally too which is great as well.
The customer service email was quicker to respond than I thought and useful honest responses.

Technology lets the paper down

I love having access to the i newspaper on my iPad and read it avidly and the technology is fine - when it works. Too often it is difficult to download and necessitates deleting the app and downloading it again - and/or closing down my tablet. This has happen ended many times over the years - but it has been particularly prevalent recently. The interactive puzzles are great but can be very sensitive if you press the same button twice - either for words with double letters or deleting several mistakes at once.

Be aware

This app keeps NOT downloading the paper. Sometimes the download consists of just a few pages. If you send an email, you’re told they will get back to you within three days.
Therefore there is every possibility of having paid for but not receiving something you have paid for!

Elonic i

Very convenient but: when reading a paper version it is easier to scan the pages and recognise articles of interest. Reading on a large iPad Pro 12.9 is easier. Finding individual articles which may be of interest more difficult.

My subscription

Thank you i. While I normally have my i delivered daily I’m away in Spain at the moment and thought I would try the digital edition. Didn’t think I would’ve liked it but wow how wrong I was. I do have a large iPad which helps. But once downloaded at the hotel I’m able to dip in at various times of the day. I’m even able to save the crossword whenever I need.
So easy to navigate, enlarge items and even save interesting articles for future reference unlike my to date method of physically cutting out and sticking in my scrapbook.
Brilliant would recommend highly.

Good but needs tweaking.

I have subscribed to the i digital edition for some years, and I have enjoyed using the app. The last time there was a major upgrade people complained about the loss of the Concise Crossword - but that has been restored in the latest upgrade. My only complaint is that when you double-tap on a page to enlarge the text, the text is a bit blurry, whereas before it was crystal-clear. Hopefully this will be remedied in the near future.

Good app but needs tweaking

I am generally pleased with the new interactive version of the app which is a big improvement on the old one. I particularly like the ability to play puzzles interactively. However, I do have one complaint about the display on my iPad - after each page turn the next page drops down slightly, requiring me to move it back up before I can turn to the next page - hence only 4 stars for the review. Hope this annoying bug is sorted soon.

Revamp overall disappointing

Great new features like crosswords and index to jump to sections. BUT....... what has happened to the magnify (double click) it’s fuzzy, not crystal clear it used to be, feels like you are reading the paper through pebble glasses with vaseline smeared on it. Getting the new edition down is hit n miss (no improvement there), it’s lost the ability to force a download when you really can’t get it, Get New edition has vanished. Scrolling through the pages is a bit more dodgy..... I could go on. Come on team. We love i, it deserves better!!

Some progress

After 2 years some progress made on this app. In portrait mode, I do not know why the designer did not fill the space available to make each page easier to read. In landscape mode, it is more readable but you have to scroll down to read the lower half of the page. Double page spreads are a disaster in the latest version of the app. In the settings there is an option to increase font size, but it does not work. There is no “live news” unlike the Evening Standard.
So some progress has been made, but there are more possibilities to improve. I guess a monthly subscription of £5 is value for money.

Much better app!

I love the digital I but have been plagued by poor performance of app : after downloading and off line it all disappears and/or all blurred. Now, though it is only 1 week, the shiny new digital I app seems wonderful. No problems so far and much more interactive and organised.

It took a while, but a great long needed update.

The app hadn’t been updated in over 2 years, and it was showing it. Crashing, freezing and frustrating.
With this update, there are great new features like scrapbook, love it. The new app is stable and easy to use. Great improvement.

Could be better

My problem with this app is that I should be able to tap an article and this should then fill the page. I should also be able to set the font size of the article when I tap to read. These are features in the Daily Mail app. I also notice this app has not been updated for 2 years which suggests a lack of commitment?

Rubbish

Have just paid for a years subscription to this and I am very unhappy. Can read some of it on my I phone then after about 10 to 20 pages it just crashes you then have to start again or go to the page where it crashed if you want to read any further. I can’t even get into the I pad version just a screen that says i. Nothing else, money wasted. Go to the Guardian instead it’s free and very good with lots of updates. I am very disappointed in this as I like the i paper better than the Guardian.
I have now cancelled my subscription and requested my money back.

Love it.

Seems to have an unworthy low score and yet it’s easy to read and put together by bright minds for intelligent people who like a mixture of important News, visual images, numerous snippets, gossip even. News, well reported is there with no( that I’ve noticed yet) awful political bent. My only complaint is that although puzzles are there I can’t fill em in. Such a small subscription price to pay for a bright, clear, both serious and amusing, fresh newspaper.

Complete Lack of Support Caused My Withdrawal

I cannot cope with the lack of support for the App. There is no help embedded in it, the developers website is merely a net version of the paper & gogling - help I newspaper app iOS - or any combination or near combination of those words brings no useful result. I cannot find an intuitive way to share articles (which I know from Facebook that Guardian readers can) & I find the puzzles are hard to make active. I have withdrawn my subscription, which is a shame because the journalism & viewpoint suit me. I am visually impaired.

Refuses to open

Downloaded the app, bought a 1 week subscription but now it's refusing to open, been trying for 2 hours today...
I had similar problem yesterday but eventually it did open and I downloaded issue to read, or I thought I had (it said downloaded) but had to do it again - how many hours wasted?
I can't believe anyone uses this app regularly to read the i, which is a great paper but a rubbish app!
