Description

Wave goodbye to queuing and pay with the new Esso App - a speedy and secure way to pay for your fuel from the comfort of your car.
Here is what you need to know about the app:
• Pay for fuel at participating Esso branded stations using Apple Pay, PayPal or your credit or debit card for quick and secure payment
• Collect Nectar points on your app transactions (without the need to carry your Nectar card)
• See your Nectar points balance & get exclusive Esso offers
• Remember to link your Nectar card in the Esso App to be eligible for Nectar points & offers.
• We suggest setting up the Esso App at home before you arrive at the site so you’re all ready to go!
• The app will ask you to select the maximum amount you’d like to fuel. This value will be reserved in your account until your bank can see how much you’ve actually fuelled.
• All your digital receipts stored in one convenient location and emailed to you.
• Use the app to find your nearest Esso station.
You can now use the Esso App to pay for fuel at almost all of our sites across the UK, but there are a few which aren’t quite ready yet. You can check the app’s Esso station finder to find a mobile enabled site near you.
Download the app now to try it with your next fill.

Too slow

App far too slow to load when sat at a pump and there is a queue of cars at the back of you then it never finds the station so you have to scan the QR code on the pump. BP app is loads faster.

No longer works!!

Since the update this app no longer will allocate funds to pay. Transactions always fail and sometimes it will put the money as pending from your bank account so you can’t use it for 5 days. Please put it back to as it was!

Nectar and Esso fuel card

Since the into of the new app I’ve been unable to get 5p off with nectar via pay at the pump options. If I go into the store it doesn’t record my visit. In addition to that, why can’t I add my esso card??

Used to be great

Never used to have issues but then started getting constant fraud alerts when authorising payments via Apple Pay, didn’t link to nectar after an update and couldn’t use points balance for discounts and now with the new version, still having failed transactions and having to go in store each time.

What if paying inside behaved like this?

Imagine you arrive to fill up and the attendant will only unlock the pump after you display your cash. You show them and they refuse to unlock. You show them again. They refuse again. This continues 4 more times before they finally unlock the pump.
You fill up then head inside to pay. You hand over the correct amount, but without warning they grab 3 times more cash from you and say they will give it back later. You complain and instead of listening they stick their fingers in their ears and shout lalalalala…
8 working days later your money appears through your door. You’ve been overdrawn for a week and had to feed the kids boiled shoes.
You would never use that petrol station again would you?
See that? That’s your app that is!
Esso used to be my fuel of choice, but no longer. You’ve clowngraded your app, either by employing idiots, or by making a cynical decision to annoy people back into the shop so they can make you more money getting fat on snacks they don’t need.
I’ll try again in a few months, but advise no one to use Esso until it’s sorted.

Disappointed

I visited the Esso station this afternoon and had significant problems trying to pay for my fuel using the Esso Pay for Fuel app. I selected the pump, set the payment limit and authorised the transaction, but the app just displayed the spinning wheel with no further information or progress. After waiting with no result, I eventually had to cancel the transaction and go inside to pay in person.
I did ask the cashier for help, but he simply said it was working and did not seem particularly interested in assisting. The whole point of using the app is to save time and avoid unnecessary delays, so this was very disappointing.
Based on this experience, I think I will stick with Shell in future, as their app is usually quick, reliable and actually saves time.

DOES. NOT. WORK!!

Since the app was updated in approx Nov/Dec 2025, it has been unusable. On multiple occasions whilst on the forecourt at the pump, it states ‘unable to reserve funds against payment card’ every single time which is more than a little annoying! I’ve deleted and added multiple different payment cards, uninstalled and reinstalled the app several times but nothing works! Your ‘customer service’ is non-existent and there is a delay of days and days between email messages sent to them and receiving a (totally unhelpful) reply. I’ve been forced into fuelling elsewhere for the past three months as a direct result of this and I’m sure many others have to. Sort it out Esso!!

Beware! when using for payments!!!

This app and the various stations seem to be running on separate pipelines and are not well integrated, so if an error happens on your app while fueling, the station can wrongly accuse you. Always check the payment and also tap the transaction to be sure it all went through

I’m so disappointed

One of my local garages switched from Shell to Esso and I was relieved to see they still offered pay-at-pump via the app. Unfortunately, the experience was a complete mess.
When I pulled up, the app required sign-up before use. Fine, but despite offering “Sign up with Apple,” it immediately failed and forced me into a long, manual registration anyway. The process felt years out of date: basic password-twice entry, no meaningful modern security options, and far too many steps. This isn’t something people have time for while sitting at a pump with cars queuing behind them.
After that, it required adding a payment method before I could proceed. Apple Pay was listed, but instead of simply using it at checkout as intended, it makes you “add” it like a stored card. Completely unnecessary friction for something designed to be quick and seamless.
The final straw: after selecting pump and amount, the app failed with “Failed to reserve,” despite plenty of available funds. I walked inside and paid with the exact same payment method without issue.
The whole experience defeats the purpose of pay-at-pump convenience. Slow, outdated onboarding, confusing payment handling, and then it doesn’t even work. A real disappointment.
I’ll return to an Esso some time in the future when the developers have had chance to improve.

Too Slow - Too Inconsistent

It’s just painfully slow with every turn of a page, but far worse than my impatience, I guesstimate that 1 in every 3 attempts to use it, something fails. Like today, it is not acknowledging my Nectar Card, therefore no points. Other times I won’t work at all.

Update broke the app

Doesn’t deserve 1 star anymore.
Been unable to fuel up using the app since the update was released. Gets to the payment stage every time but transactions are never successful. Tried various payment methods/cards. Garage says nobody has been able to pay by the app since the update yet it’s shows everything is in place for it to work! Missed out on lots of reward points. Very disappointed.

It would be good if it worked

Now tried twice to pay at pump and use money off vouchers. Never works, just get an error message ‘Sorry Something went wrong’ and a message to say my card will be refunded. Customer service never sort out the problem.
Update: developer suggestion to contact customer service is a waste of time as they have been unable to give any answers as to why it doesn’t work or offer any compensation

Good when it works

Loved it last year until the upgrade - lost all my transactions and had to set it up all over again. Customer service dreadful taking 2 months to not solve the issue. When you checkout, not only do they charm instantly (that’s fine) but they then leave the hold on your money for 3 days - dreadful. I’m optimistic for better things.

Bring back the old app!

Ever since the new build app release I am being asked for extra bank verification every time, which either takes ages or doesn’t work if there isn’t a strong network signal. I’ve contacted my bank to confirm no extra checks have been added their end, also contacted Esso customer services and they simply don’t acknowledge there’s any fault. The automated email receipts have also been removed. You can manually find and email but sadly it’s another feature lost. I started using Esso purely for these convenient features and the Nectar points, but if these issues aren’t resolved soon I’ll be switching supplier. Shame :(
UPDATE - in response to the reply from Exxon Mobil Corporation (having seen this review) I have already “reached out” to your customer care team thank you, who advised that the extra verifications are a matter for my bank. No further help has been offered.
May I suggest you read every single recent review (all negative) and instead of deflecting the comments and asking people to get in touch, INVESTIGATE AND FIX THE ISSUES AS A MATTER OF URGENCY. Everyone with the newer app is having problems!!!

Literally cannot use the app to pay!

I used to really enjoy using the app but after the upgrade late last year, I cannot make payments through the app, despite setting up different payment methods, so each time I have to go into the garage. I then don’t get the stamps for bonus nectar points. I’ve been in contact with customer service at Exxonmobil over the last few months and they have LIED saying the problem is with the garage. It is NOT! The garage have confirmed that other users have no problem. This means it’s an issue with Esso/Exxonmobil but they refuse to resolve it. They clearly don’t care about customers. They also didn’t advise that you have to completely rebuild your profile before using it. I have even contacted the CEO and he just isn’t bothered either. As a result, I now fill up at Texaco. I really do not recommend this app or Esso/Exxonmobil as they are useless and do not deserve anyone’s business! It looks like I’m not the only one with this problem either

Can’t sign up again, can’t log in, have uninstalled and reinstalled… just broken
Update: 10/02/26: can now log in. But paying for fuel fails regardless of card. Also had it work once then the pump dispensed 76p of fuel and had an error which the cashier couldn’t resolve! Useless.

Since the update, I was forced out of the app and told I had to change my password. For months I’ve gotten no further than being sent a password change link to my email, which when I click on it, tells me I need to open it in the app on a phone with the app installed. Which I did, and it is.
Many emails to the support email and I’ve basically at this stage, changed every one of my phone settings, turned around seven times while rubbing my belly the opposite way, held a chicken in the air and a deck chair up my nose, sacrificed my firstborn, and surprisingly, gotten no further.
I think they’re just having a joke with me now seeing how far I will go to get a few nectar points and a smidge of pay-at-pump convenience. But I’ve reached my limit. BP rewards it is.

Just doesn’t do the job

Installed and fully configured the app before use, arrived at my local Esso to fill up. After a bit of a delay, payment was pre-authorised and I commenced filling up, the app showed me filling and showed me finishing. Sadly, the app only charged me for £20 instead of £99 and the station owner didn’t see the transaction on the app at all so I had to pay for my full £99 at the station before leaving. Now a week later, 3 identical templates replies from customer service and I have still paid at the station and in the app - nobody seems to want to give me a refund. Pretty damning that Esso should be so far behind their competitors in the well established pay-at-pump model and we are all paying for it (some of us twice)!
Chefoir

Dogsh*t app

This app is an absolute failure and a disgrace for a brand of this size. The whole point is to pay at the pump quickly, yet the app forces you to pay before you fuel and then cannot process payment. Apple Pay fails. Added debit card fails. Added credit card fails. Every attempt ends in the same payment cannot be processed message. That is not a small bug. That is the entire service not working.
The real world impact is obvious and unacceptable. You end up stuck at the pump for ages looking foolish while people queue behind you, getting annoyed and sounding off because you are holding everything up. It defeats the purpose of the app and turns a quick stop into a stressful delay.
What makes it worse is the response from the team behind it. Instead of owning the problem, users get the same copy and paste line telling them to email support for feedback. That is not support. That is deflection. It reads like a script designed to shut complaints down rather than fix the issue.
At this point Esso needs to stop hiding behind templated replies and treat this as a serious operational failure. If the developers and managers responsible cannot deliver a basic payment function reliably in 2025, they should be removed from this product and replaced with people who can. Take the app offline until payment works, publish a clear explanation of what is broken, and give a proper timeline for a fix. Until then this app is unusable and it wastes customers time at the pump.

Updated to rubbish!

I received the email informing me the app was being updated to a new version, all singing, all dancing with complete bells and whistles. The downtime arrived as described in the email, the new version was released and I updated.
This is where things went downhill fast! I attempted to log into the new version and was confronted with a forced password reset, I duly complied and the email with link arrived and I followed the link and I am presented with a message telling me I don’t have the app installed.
I tried again and got the same message saying that I didn’t have the app. I removed, reinstalled and tried again only to get the same error. Judging by the recent feedback and from those who can log into they had obviously provided their customers with an app that’s not fit for purpose and demonstrates their inability to develop a functioning app and we haven’t even discussed the security and them handling customer data.
Thanks Esso/Exxon you have outdone yourselves this time!

Confusing and slow

I love the idea of the new app but it is incredibly slow at loading pages and once you have input your information, it tells you the server isn’t working and to try later. I assume it is because it’s incredibly successful…Perseverance is the key.
My gripe though is that I am unable to add my Wex Esso discount payment card. Looking at the internet it suggests you click on ‘more’ then tap ‘fuel discount cards’ but that doesn’t exist! I’ve updated to the latest version too. Such a shame because it seems like it could be a great app

Just doesn’t work.

The redeem 300 Nectar points for 5p off a litre feature just does not work on the app. 10% of the time it does work properly. 90% of the time it either takes 300 points off my account but does not give me the discount; or neither takes the 300 points nor gives me the advertised discount, despite selecting it?!? That’s shockingly poor. There must be some trading standards rules around that kind of thing. Any legal experts out there, as it is clearly very widespread reading the numerous other reviews? If the app designers have KPIs of a 10% success rate, they’ve absolutely nailed it.
Before the developers tell me to mail their customer services team (yet again) to sort… why is the onus on me?!? It would be far better for you to make an app that actually worked as advertised. I will revert to Shell’s superior, reliable app again for a few months, hoping Esso sort things out before I try again.

5p per Litre Discount Still Not Working Correctly

I note that there is a review from 15 August 2024 stating that they 5p per litre discount in exchange for 300 Nectar points does not work. I am also having the same problem and it has been on more than one occasion (today being the most recent case). Perhaps it’s because I am not buying enough fuel to get the maximum £3 discount (in other words, you have to buy 60 litres of fuel or the discount does not get applied for some reason). Either way, it is very frustrating. I am paying more for my fuel than I thought I would pay, and I am not happy. Perhaps you can contact me when you fix the app and then I will start considering using Esso again. Thank you.

Love using the Esso app.

Dear Esso manager, please can somebody help, I love using all the features of the Esso software application, E.g. Mobile payment at the pump, viewing receipts, & also participating in the customer survey. Very useful, reliable, Saving time & effort. The Esso app has its technical software glitches from time to time. Eg; Not loaded up straight away when at a pump, having to close and then reopen & also shows up with host socket errors. Please can you rectify those errors & Please can you make improvements. If it’s within your capabilities or capacity, please can you also provide me with 10x or 15x nectar points. Overall, I love using the Esso application.

Worst of all the fuel apps

The Esso app continues to be the worst app attempting to support mobile fuel payments in the U.K. Whilst Shell has threatened it on occasion, Esso still gets the crown for perpetually not working for little or no valid reason. Today I went though all the process, approved the payment and after 5 minutes it told me my loyalty credentials were not recognised. Clearly not the case - and if so this should have been highlighted at login. Gave up after 3 attempts and got different error messages each time. Prior experience of using the app include a 6 month wait in 2022 to handle a support matter that should have taken a 10 minute phone call and an email. To summarise: mobile payment apps are supposed to make life easier and more efficient - this app is brilliant at having the completely opposite effect. Solution: don’t use an Esso garage.
Response to Developer feedback: I spent 6 months back and forth with that email address, which included many occasions where no response was received. Your customer support is on par with the app ie well below the required standard.

Rubbish

It usually partially works which has been an improvement over the last year. It rarely gives the discount advertised in exchange for Nectar points, often taking points without giving the discount. Replies from Esso are evasive, and usually they need chasing for an answer. Some Esso stations do not use it. The Shell app works a lot better. Why does the overall star rating look so favourable, yet the majority of reviews I have read are poor? In fact reading some of the so called 5 star reviews, they are actually poor reviews. Has someone been fiddling the reviews? Update - Esso refuse to refund the discounts, and say they cannot give out fuel vouchers. Why not? Shell gives out discount fuel vouchers

Horrible first experience

First time use here, App thought I was still filling up even though I had finished filling and put the nozzle back, all payments went through fine via Apple Pay before filling up and followed the on screen instructions to a T, I checked the nozzle on the holder by lifting it off and putting it back but no luck, app was still stuck on filling up, was in the petrol station another 8 mins or so and was still showing no payment come through on tills as staff panic but was showing on my banking app but not on tills so they made me pay on a till and advised I may need to return to get a refund as I may get charged twice once the payment comes through, got my app receipt about 20 mins after filling up when it should come through as soon as I stop filling. So yes I have now paid twice for petrol and now need to return to get a refund. This was at Sheffield branch, chesterfield road, not the staff’s fault but the app or systems did not work smoothly. Such a shame as paying at pump should be much faster than going into the station, but on this occasion I was at the station 10 mins longer than I should of been.

Laborious process, very frustrating.

Initially found this app quite useful and used it on numerous occasions. Recently it has given me a number of issues when trying to utilise it usually on a very busy garage forecourt. I liked using Nectar points to get a 5p per litre discount. Having used the app for over a year with no problems it suddenly asked me to verify my Nectar card via a password which at that point I couldn’t remember so I couldn’t take advantage of the 5p discount (Esso garages ain’t the cheapest). Next time I used it, it notified me that my payment card was due to expire in 2026 and could I update my payment details, what?!?! Thirdly and the most recent I went through the whole fuel process and then it asked me for my Esso pin and a password which tbh having not needed to do this before I had no idea what either were, result: unable to fuel.
What is the point of authorising login via fingerprint recognition for ease of use only for numerous login issues that crop up when you just wanna stick some fuel in your motor, usually when you’re stuck at a pump at a busy garage ☹️.

VERY UPSET! App charged me £70 on top of my fuelling cost

UPDATE: NO HELP from them. Been shuffed off multiple times, it has been almost 2 months, and I still don’t have my £70 back. I have contacted the bank and will have to wait another 5 months to hear back as they have “contacted the merchant”. I am still fuming! It is THEFT, and their team can’t be bothered to help. I was told to “be patient” when I have been incredibly patient with their useless customer service who don’t respond, refuse to help and show no interest in returning the money that was taken from me.
***ORIGINAL REVIEW:After numerous attempts of trying to contact customer services and following up, I am resorting to reaching out via the App Store as I have not received any response! I have been charged £70 more than I should have on the fuel app and would like to be refunded. I have emailed customer service, followed up and received no response. I have since called the customer service number between the hours specified and it says “the office is closed, please call between Monday-Friday 8:00-16:00”, when I have called within the given time. I have also called the petrol station where it happened and it says “the number does not exist”. I then called the general enquiries number and they told me they couldn’t help me and to call the petrol station where it happened, but when it happened, they told me to contact customer services/that I wouldn’t be charged the £70. This is becoming a bit of a wild goose chase. Please can someone get back to me! There is no other way of contacting customer services other than this and I have now ventured all avenues…

First time failure

Used for first time yesterday, went out of my way to an Esso garage to take advantage of the offer on the app of 5p off per litre when redeeming 500 nectar points. Also my CC account offered a 10% reduction in cost if I used the app. I Set up the app beforehand, and added my nectar card and CC payment method.
At the pump, I fired up the app, entered the pump number, selected payment card and preauthorised amount of £140. This was approved by the CC company and the app advised me to start filling. I added £107 of diesel, and replaced the nozzle. I did not get any notifications that all was complete, and no option to redeem the nectar offer.
I went to cashier to ask if I could scan nectar card, but was told that as I had paid by the app it was too late.
I was just about to drive off when she came running out to advise payment had not gone through, even though the CC company had authorised it. So I had to pay manually via the same CC card.
I then checked my CC account and found 2 pending payments of £140 and £107.
Today I checked and the £140 prepayment has thankfully disappeared. But I feel cheated as I only went to that garage to obtain the benefits of the deals on offer. What a load of rubbish! I won’t be going to Esso again any time soon!

Great when it works, impossible to resolve when it doesn’t

Been using the app at my local Esso garage for over a year. It works 95% of the time, and at those times it’s brilliant. However, I’ve now had two separate occasions where putting the nozzle back didn’t bill me and the app kept going. First time around lots of frustrated button presses later the attendant worked some magic and billed me in the app. This time around I was just told “we don’t do that here” despite my insistence that they, in fact, do. Had to pay by card.
App needs better instructions on what to do if it fails and forecourt staff need better training with the app

AVOID AVOID AVOID….useless app, useless customer service

Tried to use this app for the second time and got an error message, twice. So I had to just go in to the shop and pay for fuel as normal. However the app then locked £280 from the balance of my current account. Bank said I would need to contact Esso. Esso took 12 days to reply to tell me I would need to contact my bank. An utterly useless app backed up by utterly useless customer service. Avoid at all costs, unless you enjoy having chunks of money from your current account locked by Esso.
EDIT : I’m staggered by the arrogance of some of the responses on here from Esso, to me and to other customers. Yes the £280 you locked from my account has now been returned but you held it for 7 days and took 12 days to reply to my enquiry to get it sorted out. Yet you come on here and pat me on the head and tell me not to worry about it as if I’m complaining about nothing.
Have you thought about (a) apologising for the huge inconvenience you are causing people (b) actually sorting your horrendous app out so that it doesn’t happen again (c) the fact that people might not be able to pay bills, direct debits, buy food because your awful app has locked out chunks of their money ?
Try doing something about it Esso instead of coming on here and patronising people.

Timesaver!

I use this every time. The previous version wouldn’t integrate my Nectar card and was too slow to connect to the station, but this one works brilliant. You can use various pay methods, preset a pump limit and it gives you plenty of time to get the pump you’ve authorised in the app and then start filling. The receipt is in the history for proof of payment and this can also be emailed to you via the app settings. If you don’t like staying logged in, have your password to hand or log in and tick stay logged in until you’re done and then log out or you’ll hold yourself up, just a tip guys, hope this helps

DO NOT USE THIS APP

I tried to use this app for the first time last week and after authorising the payment through the app it came up with an error and said try again so I did but the same thing happened 4 times after trying another pump, so I left with no fuel but had 4 pending charges on my card of £70 each, after a few days the charges had not been released so I called the customer service number and was told if you use the guest mode in the app you get the error and will have to wait 7 days for charges to be released back to you. So Esso is aware of an error with guest mode but have not fixed it or disable it or even put out information to inform customers, instead they let the pending charges happen and make you wait 7 days for your money back, so thank you Esso for holding onto my £280 which I can’t use until you release the pending payments, I will never use your app or filling stations again.

How to make buying fuel more complicated.

I downloaded this app subsequent to a Nectar promotion.
Not only do you have to guess how much fuel you’re going to need, but you then have to make sure you get as close to that amount as possible, as you’re going to be charged anyway. Even if you do get the difference refunded within seven days, I know one or two people who might struggle to wait so long. Luckily, I’m not one of those. I’m one of those people who have little time to waste on making fuel purchases more complicated than they need to be.
There are other ways of getting Nectar points with your fuel, and also ways of avoiding queueing at a till, that are much, much simpler.

Useless - £255 reserved on card for £45 fuel

Today, it went all the way through Apple Pay, but errored when verifying payment as it said the pump was already in use (it wasn’t) and that I must have started fuelling before using the app (I hadn’t even left the car). Tried again, same thing happened. Went inside and cashier confirmed pump number and said all was ok, but to try the pump in front which had become free. Same thing happened again. Had to fill as usual and pay by card inside, but the app has reserved 3 x £70 on my credit card and Customer Service line closes at 4pm. Last week drove on to forecourt and found app was undergoing maintenance, checked several times the next day and still down (for more than 24 hours) offers within the app expired in the meantime. Only used successfully once in 4 attempts (or 1 in 6 if you count today as 3 goes).

Did not work for me

I downloaded the app, set it up as instructed with Apple Pay as the chosen payment method and reserving £80 as the maximum fill up. On my first visit to a garage I opened up the app, selected the pump number then filled up. The instructions say I am then free to drive off but just to be sure, I went into the kiosk and asked if payment had gone through. I was told that it had NOT so I had to pay manually. The next day, my credit card statement showed that I had been charged twice - the £80 reservation + the actual cost of the petrol. My email to customer service requesting a refund has been ignored. Therefore I can only advise to avoid this app at all costs. UPDATE: I have now received a reply from customer service to my email but it is just a copy/paste from one of there standard letters which just repeats the instructions for using the app and ends by hoping that I am enjoying using it! It appears that they did not read what I actually wrote. I’m still left having been charged around £140 for £60 of fuel. Today I received a response from the developer saying my case would be investigated further. UPDATE: Now resolved - many thanks.

Just be careful

Great app.. but (I paid by Apple Pay), when setting max fuel fill - I put £50 , filled up £26 - took that fine — but then pended the rest (£24) in my bank . Not sure if this the case with different ways to pay . But like I said - I used Apple Pay. It won’t take that money from my bank - but bank balance is lower , till that sorts itself out . I’ve now dropped it to £20 max fill / but very easy to change/ if u think your gonna be putting more fuel in .

Beware they take a deposit from your bank account!!

Like many other users on here, I’ve been gutted to see the default £100 pre-authorisation cap has automatically been taken out of my bank account - when I only wanted a tenner’s worth of fuel!! My bank account is now showing as overdrawn, when I just wanted a quick and speedy way of paying for fuel at the pump (like so many other forecourts offer) without having to go into the shop during a pandemic/having to take my baby out of the car to do so! Come on Esso, sort it out!!
When you’re in a hurry and see the sign saying you can pay on your phone, of course you’re going to speed through and download it whilst other drivers are waiting behind you - it’s just a shame I didn’t get a chance to read the reviews before completing the purchase! Waiting on £90 to deposit back into my account now for a silly, “efficient” app download!! :(

Unsafe

16/3
I have still not received a response since you escalated my complaint. Who did you escalate it to? Nor have I received your company's Complaints Process that I have repeatedly requested.
You have now confirmed that the payment was authorised some hours after I left the service station, contrary to your colleague’s assertion.
Why was the pre-authorisation taken after I left the pump and why was the payment not taken from my account?
I find your replies disingenuous. Please could I have an honest response to my complaint.
10/2
The application failed to register my pre-authorisation at the pump, apparently due to a “communication error”. I filled up the car and drove off unaware that payment hadn’t been taken.
When I reached my destination, I checked the app and found that it hadn’t taken the payment. I called the service station who had recorded me as having driven off without paying and they took payment over the phone.
However, the app then pre-authorised payment at the pump, when I was some 4 hours and 200 miles from the service station! It was about to dispense fuel to the fortunate driver then at the pump at my expense. Luckily, I realised what was happening and managed to cancel the payment before they managed to do so.
This is a major security issue with the app. It should only authorise payment at the pump location.

Slow, Logouts and payment registration problems

I’ve only recently started using Esso again because of the Nectar - BA avios tie up.
The app is not universally accepted on proper Esso forecourts and is not accepted at any Tesco Esso fire courts. None of my many local stations offer supreme+ 99, only supreme 97.
Setting up a payment methodology proved tricky. The secure ID page from NatWest refused to load - whether that’s NatWest or Esso, don’t know, don’t care - so adding a mastercard took several attempts. The app doesn’t accept Amex directly.
Like every pay at pump / petrol app payment system, the app pre-authorises (not charges) an amount which the user sets which caps the pump vend at the pre-auth. Some users appear not to understand how pre-auth’s work, the app is transparent and clear about the pre-auth amount set by the user.
PayPal details were accepted, using amex as the funding source, then on trying to authorise it failed twice and then went through on the third attempt. Full 4G signal at all times.
The timeline to actually authorise a fuel dispense takes far too long such that the attendant queried if I was having a problem.
The app always hard logs me out if Face ID isn’t recognised on the first attempt for any reason - eg wearing a mask or Face ID just having a wobble. Then the app completely logs out requiring manual typing of user name and password - far far too much faff, 1 petrol fill can take 10 mins. The app will not try Face ID again. Once it fails, manual login typing required.
Sorry, I can’t be bothered. Back to Tesco Tesco with an Amex, with 99, even without the avios.

Various payment issues with app

I’ve used the app for over a year now, and with the covid pandemic I’ve made more of an effort to remotely pay, well at least tried to. It has been more of a hinderance than a help for 2 reasons:
1. PayPal payments didn’t seem to work when I first downloaded the app. When I tried to authorise the pump using PayPal it just wouldn’t work and often it then messed with the stations system and I had to move to another pump all together before I could then fill and pay manually at kiosk. I then started using Apple Pay and things worked better but still had issues.
2. When using Apple Pay with the app the balance between the authorised amount and the actual amount used has been taking up to 2 weeks to become available in my bank account and refunded.

Great when not broken! *Updated*

This app was great and became even more useful during the current pandemic. However for the past month I’ve been unable to log in due to ‘network’ errors. I’ve reinstalled the app several time and tried all sorts of fixes but it still refuses to allow me to log in. From other reviews I can see this is a user wide issue. Can we please get an update fixing the network error!
**Updated**
The error was fixed within 1 week of my previous post. All is great again, I hope it stays that way!

Holds £100 hostage for a week!

Technically the app works. It’s quite clunky to use, especially if your login had timed out since previous fill up, which seems frequent. It’s quicker and easier just to pay in the kiosk. To only reason to use it is for social d stancing.
The biggest negative point is that at the point of filling, the app reserves £100 from your bank account, so you can fill up to that limit. However it then charges the actual amount you filled to your account but also leaves the £100 “pending” on your account for a WEEK! Meaning your available balance is £100 lower until the Esso app removes the hold.
This is totally unacceptable, and I won’t be using the app again.

Not a fan

I tried to fill up at my local station, everything had gone through perfectly fine. I knew I could afford it as it’s just after payday.
I started my app and clicked start filling, as you normally would. Continued through the process, I am familiar with this as I have been using the app for a few months now, sometimes not successfully resulting in having to go into the station itself to pay.
I had confirmation that it had all gone through and drove away like you would....
A few hours later I was scrolling through the notifications on my phone, only to see that it had been DECLINED.
I immediately called the station I filled up at and explained the situation, they had then accused me of driving straight off without paying. I attempted to pay over the phone, but my card was once again declined.
Of course I had tried to pay, as they will see on not only the CCTV, but also the notification from my bank saying declined.
The notification had come through around 5 minutes later. I was driving and obviously wasn’t on my phone while doing so.
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic i had used the app to limit the amount of time going into small, busy areas such as shops.
Since this has happened, I have deleted the app and now have to go into the shop or pay at the pump. The whole point of this app is to have a contactless transaction and it has let me down majorly. So much for an easy process.

Works! Needs a bit more fit’n’finish

Ideally there would be a feature for the user to dismiss the ‘fuelling’ screen.
First time I used the app, I finished fuelling, looked at my phone to see if the display changed (it didn’t), I tried to find a feature to say I was finished (couldn’t find one), waited a bit, then drove off.
In terms of saying “I’m finished”, the app shouldn’t need to do anything, just change the display.
Also: if there is a 90s window between card authorisation and beginning fuelling, maybe we could have a discreet countdown timer?

AVOID PAYING WITH APP

Do not, I repeat do not pay using the mobile app as it automatically sets a £100 cap and takes that amount from your bank regardless of how much you put in. I put £10 in and Esso took £100 from my bank and am still waiting for my £90 back. I know I will receive my money (well hopefully) but it’s been so long and it’s unnecessary stress and it’s been 5 days Esso have not gave my money back. Even after ringing them they said it shall come after 24 hours or a bit longer but was not expecting 5+days. Completely ruined my experience with them and not happy at all. If you do use the app please, set a maximum cap so for example if you put £20 in weekly then go into your account setting and change it to £20 and the app will automatically enable the pumper to stop at £20 and will take £20 from your account.

Network error resolved

I have been using the Esso App for about a year. In December the app stopped working reporting a network error at my regular filling station. I noticed my phone was automatically connecting to a BTWifi-fon network at the petrol station. Switching off Wi-fi on my phone and connecting via the mobile network resolved the issue and I am once again able to use the app. BT customers with the BT Wi-fi app running on their phone to take advantage of BT Wi-fi hotspots may come across the same issue. Other than this one issue the app works well for me. The maximum fuelling amount can be restricted to what I am comfortable with in account settings. One complaint; only the last 90 days payment history is available making it useless to monitor costs.

No access to receipts

I originally chose this app for convenience, I used to lose my VAT receipts but with this app I knew they’d always be there... alas that was a dream. It vaguely worked for a while but now I can not access my receipts at all. Comes up with “Endpoint request timed out” error! I’ve had to write to esso to send me copies of my receipts which proved very time consuming. (It’s been a month now trying to get receipts and nowhere near getting a single one).

Majorly Disappointed

We used the app for the first time last Friday and thought it had worked but it failed. It pre- authorised £75 out of our bank account and it was only by chance we checked with the cashier that it hadn’t worked, then paid for fuel by debit card. Tried the app again yesterday and this time it worked. It pre-authorised another £75 and also took the £48 out for the fuel as well. Checked with our bank and currently have £150 pre-authorised off our available balance. This app is absolutely appalling and will be deleted once we have our money back - I have read the typical useless reason they have given others on this point. We have been to our bank to check on this today and Esso have not removed the allocation . It does not happen as quickly as they state. This can and will cause people financial hardship because of the inadequate system Esso is supposed to be running. Not even worth 1 star but had no other option

Didn’t work 2 out of 5 occasions, compensation Nectar points never added

The app hit technical issues from time to time, 2 out of 5 of my recent visits didn’t work (so I give 2 stars, which is more than fair), I had to follow customer service suggestions to uninstall and reinstall the App. When App was reinstalled, I lost my previous transaction count towards Nectar bonus points. Annoying? What was more annoying was the promised Nectar points by customer service as goodwill never arrived, it’s already 35 days elapsed, I am still waiting / chasing / getting reassured / wasting my time. Got customer service reply today saying they have sent request to their loyalty team for an immediate credit to be added to my Nectar, will wait and see :((

Dreadful

I’d have used a slightly stronger description but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been published. This is my second attempt at a ‘petrol’ app - and this one is worse than the first. Several attempts to use it have failed - I find I’ve been logged out so have to re-enter my email and password (which it seems can’t be saved) - then Apple Pay says all is fine - ‘continue’ - then ‘transaction declined’. Unbelievable. In the time it has taken to do all this I could have re-fuelled and paid at the counter about three times - and I shall therefore continue to do just that. I’m just glad there was no one behind me - they’d have thought I was sending a lengthy text or something. Absolutely beyond comprehension that an app like this can be SO bad !!!!!! Uninstalling to save my sanity.

I have used this app successfully for many months, but I have realised that the developer will only take notice of 1-star reviews.
When it works, it is very convenient. However, I have had some of the same problems as other people: “your biometric data has changed, failed to authenticate” and - for my last 2 purchases - “failed to complete the transaction, please try again”.
This is NOT TRUE. I always check my email before driving off, and I got a “you have paid” email both times. But I used to get 2 separate email receipts (one from PayPal, one from Esso app), which means there is a problem with the app itself.
The “history” within the app shows one of the transactions, but not the other, but doesn’t appear to hold all my transactions anyway.
It isn’t a PayPal problem.
As for “please try again”, that’s irresponsible.
I’ve read the reviews of people who have had the police involved in alleged non-payment, which must be horrendous, and is completely unacceptable.
I hope the developers read this review, identify the cause of the issue and fix it quickly.
Hope my review helps other users too.

Needs vast improvement

I’ve been using his app for 4 months now and was hoping that the bugs would be rectified, alas this is not the case even though I was asked for my review of the app. The concept is good, however the app needs improvement. Every time I use the app, once I have finished putting petrol in, I am logged out. It doesn’t remember your login details so you have to re-input it all ( not good when you have a queue behind you). I used to receive an email and that was quicker than login back into the app, but now I don’t get the email either. My last fill up, I had to go into the shop to ask if the transaction had worked as there was a massive queue and I had not received any confirmation that it had been successful.
My husband has the same issues so I know it not just me. Come on Esso, sort it out!!

Handy but not reliable

This is a great app when it works, but half of the time the app fails to complete the transaction meaning you have to try again, adding to the time it takes to pay for fuel and removing any time savings. Sometimes it does not work at all so you have to go into the shop to pay, and once I almost missed the fact that the transaction had not completed and could have easily driven off not having paid for my fuel. The first payment step (Apple Pay) states it is successful, but there is then a second step which you need to wait and ensure completes.

Extremely convenient

Don’t have to queue anymore . Takes less than 10 sec to Open the app , wait for it to locate me and I only need choose the pump number . if I want to change the preauthorised amount I need to adjust it otherwise it remains the same as from before .
The only downside is that only a few Esso stations are registered with the Paymobile app. Recently I have seen more in the area where I live. Hope that eventually I will be able to use it in any Esso station similar to Shell and BP.

Don’t use unless you have a spare £100 you can do without

I have been using this app for a couple of months now as found it very handy as didn’t need to take my baby out the car into the garage to pay. Unfortunately the last time I have used I topped up £10 but it has taken £100 off my available balance. I have been told by the bank that this should sort out when the £10 is actually debited but I think this is unacceptable as I may have needed to use those funds and don’t expect £100 of my money to be held for £10 worth of petrol. Hopefully will be resolved soon but I will unfortunately not feel confident using this app again. Emailed Esso and have had no response apart from a standard ‘we will get back to you’. Not what I expect when I am currently down £90 and anxious about getting it back. I understand that £100 is initially authorised but the adjustment to the amount you actually spend is supposed to take effect immediately, but sadly not in my case.

Network connection problem

I used this app successfully initially. However the last 5 or 6 attempts have been unsuccessful. I go through the routine as normal to the point where payment is approved and it says commence filling. Then I get an error message telling me I have a network connection problem. I’ve tried reloading the app including after installing iOS12, with no improvement.
Having been advised to start filling it would be easy to assume that it’s paid and drive off without checking the iPhone screen. That’s a dangerous problem.
The sales staff have no idea what the problem is. Need to hear back from Esso with a solution or I give up and maybe try the BP app.
