Step backwards

This is, unfortunately, inferior to the old version. Others have mentioned the over complex graphical style which makes it far less enjoyable to play and quite difficult to look at. I would also add that the music and voiceover of the original version were genuinely superb and are greatly missed.

I bought this and all the expansion packs do I could play online with my partner. Now they can’t download it because family sharing was disabled

Now isn’t Carcassonne just the best game ever?

Strategic•Varying•Adaptable•Fun• Unpredictable•Competitive, the list goes on!

And now, it can be played online: with friends and family across the globe, against random opponents of similar skill level. Or locally: against an AI with varying difficulty, or with friends or family from the same or a different device. What’s not to love? For only £1.79, it was well worth the purchase.

Massove glitching which means now when you attempt to open it up, the screen blinks in quick succession, doesn’t open the game and impossible to play.

Bring back the old version

The old version was perfection. This is the opposite of perfection. In fact it is so far from perfection as to be in a different universe. Why Lord, why?! This has ruined my week.

Never played it before but

I never played this game until buying it but find it very good. One thing I experienced today was playing online with someone using the builders and traders expansion and they went -1 with their builder…how is this even possible…

Shortly after the person stopped playing so not sure if it crashed on them

Excellent new version with minor issues

I was unsure at first but I’ve actually grown to prefer this to the old version. One thing missing that the previous version had is the ability to add a move time limit to the online game as some cheats just refuse to move when they are losing and try to force you to leave the game. Also an In game portrait view for when the tiles have gone in the vertical direction would be good. With the latest update they have listened to a lot of requests inc putting an outline around the meeples, yellow especially, so you can see them more clearly. Well done, this is now very nearly a 5 star game.

** the official single player rules have now been released by the creators of the board game. I would gladly pay if this were an added option**

Good… but I’m not buying the expansions yet again

It’s a fine implementation of an excellent game. I personally don’t like the 3D effect, but you can turn that off. And the option to see the fields highlighted is very useful.

The only thing stopping me giving five stars is that even though I’ve already bought all the expansions on the PC version of the game (which, to be clear, is identical), and even though I’m signed in with the same Asmodee account in both cases, the expansions don’t get shared between the two versions of the game.

I’ve already bought the expansions three times: once for the physical games, once on PC, and once on the sadly defunct Coding Monkeys version, and have no intention of buying them a fourth.

App causes issues big time - avoid

I’m a board gamer and love Carcassonne so was excited to play it as an app. I bought the game and most in app purchases. However, the app causes both my 1 yo iPad Pro and my iPhone 11 to crash. As soon as I delete the app both my devices are fine. I reinstalled the app on my iPad twice and both times had to do a hard reset to confirm this was the issue. Once done the machine worked fine again. I even took the devices into the Apple store and they confirmed it is the app. I’m angry that I spent over £10 and trips to the store thinking my iPad and iPhone were both busted only to find out it wast his app causing the issue. A large dev like Asmodee should know better!

Sooooo glitchy. Keeps kicking you out mid game. Unplayable and frustrating! Avoid and definitely don’t buy!

Disappointing compared to original

I don’t play on-line at all, just against the computer. I want competition and the old app gave me way more competition. The ‘aggressive’ AI component is tame! It’s also really difficult to see the fielders compared to the old version. Very pricey and then it’s not like the board game, to get the board game with the river etc you have to pay in addition! I’m just glad I have the old version on my iPad. On the phone it’s just to busy with bunches of flags waving from cities so it becomes quite muddled. It also constantly zooms in when I want it to zoom out. If only the free alternative had a hard level then I’d stick with that as it’s way more user friendly. Bring back the old Carcassonne - this version is expensive and not worth it. Oh and 3D, totally weird, why bother???

Feel motion sick now

This is a really poor step backwards from the near perfect original version.

Over fussy with animations and the movement over the board has actually left me feeling motion sick, even in top down mode.

The simplicity of the game is why it’s so good, so to play a version that visually over complicates that seems to be defeating the object.

Very disappointed.

I’d give it two stars for game play, but a game that makes me feel actually nauseous is unplayable so it’s one star.

Avoid!

When playing normal it’s too easy, so played on hard.

When playing normal the tiles are fair for both players

When playing hard it is so obviously biased, that the tiles favor the AI.

When you know that the only reason you lose is because the AI had a obvious advantage it’s not something the developers should be proud off.

When playing, the AI will regularly have two tiles in a row that complete it’s own castle

Or add a bit, but the next tile “magically” connects to yours even though you done the hard work.

When you do the same it will use a tile that blocks you off but some how favors the AI, as if by “magic”

It’s disgustingly bad considering I paid for the expansions

So now I have to play at a level that’s NOT satisfying

Or play on hard and note to self take biased points off the AI

I assume the app has been updated since the negative reviews as I've found this game works fine. I have the physical board and this app does just as good a job.

Good app but could use some additional features

Good enough to play a nice game of Carcassonne but a few extra simple features would make this much better. Things such as being able to change player names and meeple colours when playing a local game. Changing colours from game to game gets a bit confusing when playing with multiple people! Otherwise it’s pretty good!

Very good (but a badly rendered river!)

A great fun version of the game, especially online against friends. However, I bought the river expansion and those tiles are very crudely rendered with very jagged edges. Very little care taken which is a shame. It feels like it was just knocked out knowing that fans of the game would pay for it - cheeky! Hopefully in a future update they will get someone to redesign the river tiles to a quality more in keeping with the rest of the game (or offer the river expansion for free!).

Lovely game

Lovely app and lovely game, really enjoying it!

It would be awesome if the developers could add an optional vibrate feature so it buzzes when it’s your turn to play....? I find it’s easy to get distracted or frustrated if another player’s taking long to then find that it became your turn when you were looking away!

Cant log in

The gamę is OK. But The problem is with log in. I’ve played around 20 games, then I couldnt log in to The game. Triem reset passeord but thats not help at all and still cant log in.

Not an improvement over the previous app literally makes me sick to play

The previous app, by a different developer, was a far superior version. In fact it was almost perfect. However, this version has different artwork which is much harder to look at and see what’s going on. Especially when the map zooms and pans around even after you’ve switched off the animation option. This game literally gives me motion sickness. Every time I tap to lay a tile the board literally re-centres itself. Zooming in and out is difficult or impossible. The animation is completely unnecessary and adds nothing to the game except clutters up the graphics. This game is a usability nightmare and the designer has produced a game that literally makes me sick. Incredible because the previous game worked so perfectly. Please either bring back the previous version or scrap this version and start over with playability rather than fancy animation as the core principle for design.

Bring back the old version

This version is trying to be far to clever for its own good. The graphics make it hard to see what has been played. It randomly loses games and is just clunky. The older version I still have is simple clear 2D and never misses a beat.

Miss leading

At no point does that description say that you need to buy each expansion on top of the core game price. Just a way to rip people off. You can buy the big box and get the expansions. When you read the description it says includes expansions.

Significant Bugs

Great game.

However, there are some significant bugs in play here:

- The dragon expansion is unplayable with AI. When the AI lays a dragon tile it can take minutes for the move to be made.

- When the person who sets up a match then forfeits we have been unable to proceed with the match.

Poor replacement for old version

Terrible and clunky tiles - such a disappointment and only bought as old version was coming to end - don’t waste your money as timer and poor game quality make it hard to play - company should have invested in old version, this is rubbish

Good conversion! Overly hard AI.

It’s a good conversion of the board game, without the hassles of clearing the tiles away. My only gripe would be that the AI is overly difficult to beat.

Needs improved

I love the board game Carcassonne and this is a great alternative in times when we can’t be there to physically play our friends and families. However, the app needs a bit of an update as the interface is pretty clunky.

Firstly the icons aren’t particularly easy to understand or navigate.

Secondly the game jumps to the load screen all the time and when I’m switching games it reloads everything. I feel like this should be a smoother transition so you can play multiple games more easily. The chat also deletes when you move from game to game.

The animations aren’t that good and they make the game harder to see and play.

The online play is INCREDIBLY frustrating and throws me out all the time. I had to reload the app multiple times which means I run out of time on the game and it doesn't tell me how the match ends.

It feels like a very early app game and probably needs an overhaul. That said I am enjoying it and anyone who likes the board game should get it!

Over the top!

Clearly a lot of work gone into this but it’s all a bit too much!

The game works fine buts there’s too much going on, distracting.

All the little animations make it harder to play and because of the 3D view it lags a bit.

Would be good if you could change modes so if you want it just looked like the old game.

Also would be better if the tiles actually looked like the real game tiles. Confusing and distracting when cities change colour and monasteries look different.

I think with a game like this less is definitely more!

Nice but could be better

This works great for pass and play and I like the possibility of switching from 2D to 3D although I don’t see the use of 3D in this game.

I currently cannot finish a solo play game (on the final tile) as it keeps saying “connection lost” and kicks me out of the game. So this bug needs fixing.

I really like this

I’ve not played the original iPad version of this and put off buying this version on three occasions because of the bad reviews. I eventually thought I’d risk it though and I really like it. It’s easy to navigate round the screen and I don’t find playing against an AI slow. I’ve not tried online or multi player yet but I’m enjoying solo games and the tutorial was clear and got me started. I don’t find the 3D view a problem and I like that you can toggle the view to see what fields you control. Am completely happy with my purchase and am glad I bought it.

Incredibly frustrating

Really like the game but keep on getting kicked out and the re registration process doesn’t work. Completely fed up on resetting my password but not getting logged on wasted a lot of time, not impressed

Not great.

A big letdown compared to the previous game. The interface is awkward and clunky. Games take longer and the board is harder to read. I cannot recommend this game in its current state. The only reason I can see for this change in developer is to sell the add ons all over again. Don’t bother.

A big step backwards from the game it replaces.

It seems they have taken a relatively simple tile base game and over complicated it. I loved the old version and have been playing it for years. It was fast, fluid, easy on the eye and easy to understand.

This new version seems to take much longer to play, when against the AI it takes far too long to decide a move. I get trying to make it a little 3D, but by tilting the whole board 45*, it makes it much harder to see what’s going on and overly cluttered and busy. If only there was a way I could have a ‘top down’ view, even with a slight tilt to show off their 3D architecture, but I want to see a traditional view, similar to playing the real game in a table.

For now I can’t recommend this game. If you have the old version you will enjoy that much more than this version, until improvements are made by the developers.

No way to turn off ugly 3D + Poor UI

What a poor replacement for the Coding Monkey’s excellent version of Carcassonne.

This one is clunky and has added a harder to view 3D perspective that can’t be turned off.

Newsflash to the developers. 3D is great for Fortnite or Overwatch... but for board games it often adds to the clutter and makes the board harder to read.

There should be a 2D option.

Also the user interface is very clunky requiring far more taps to start a game than should be needed.

A very sad replacement for a superb game.
