Should be more neutral and familiar

It’s OK in concept and features. But it is designed to a very particular taste.
I feel that any app that hopes to become a regular part of my morning and evening routines (plus spontaneous idea-capturing throughout the day) should really nail the utility before trying to come up with a unique visual style. I know the bookish appearance of small serif type overlaid over a washed out photo is intended to be calming. But UI design doesn’t work like that. The most calming UI is the one I don’t even notice, one that feels native.

Bad update

I’m completely fed up with this app at the moment. Since the last update I’ve had lots of problems, it won’t back up to the same place twice, it won’t mark off the calendar when I’ve done a reflection and often goes completely bonkers and won’t stop flicking through quotes continually. All I can do is delete the app and reload. When I first had the app it was very useful, I’m very disappointed ☹️

Digital making Analog practical

Using an analog Bullet Journal has been a wonderful experience. Thank you, Ryder, for sharing your method.
But there were always two concerns in the back of my mind: why happens if I lose my BuJo and how do I see all my old collections of quotes, gift ideas, etc, without carrying a pile of notebooks around with me.
This app solves both of these. A photo every time I reflect means I’ve always got a backup. Then the ability to index these photos solves my second problem of having constant access to my historic collections.
This process is so worthwhile that I have just scanned in my last 3 BuJos giving me an accessible digital record.
Two changes would make this app even better: 1) access to the scanned library on my iPad so I can read the scans on the larger screen. 2) for the library layout to allow for notebooks where spreads are numbered differently, eg 2-3, 4-5 etc not the expected 1-2, 3-4
Thanks again for a great app.

Usually 4 stars

Is anybody else having issues with the app opening? I’ve had this app for a long time and it was working great until this week when it opens and all I get is a black screen then it shuts down. I’ve 3 or 4 journals on there and I’m afraid I’ve lost everything I’ve saved. I emailed the team for support at the weekend but nothing. Very disappointing

Buggy Update

The new features have compromised the app. It’s no longer usable.
- Reflections are defaulted to AM and cannot be changed.
- Wording on the Reflection Calendar page is cut off and you aren’t able to scroll.
- All my previous Reflection logs for January we’re erased since the update.
- The swipe back option is very sensitive.
I can’t use the app until these bugs are fixed which is a shame as it used to be part of my daily routine.

Very buggy since latest update

Finding it less helpful since update. Major problem with Reflections, times all at AM. Even after alteration, not logging properly. Won’t use again until a fix. Very disappointed, as this isn’t a cheap app to buy.

Update screwed up my log

The update is awful. I can’t log reflections anymore by tapping and I hate this photo capture feature. It was reminding me of evening reflections at 9am! I deleted it and re-downloaded it hoping it will fix it. If it doesn’t I will just delete the app because it’s garbage now.

Flaws In v2.0.1

Since the latest update I have had major issues with the app. Reflection times were reset to AM. I can now log reflections before the next reflection time, i.e I can accidentally log evening reflection during the day. The text on the reflection page cuts off on the bottom of the screen (probably fine if you have iPhone X and newer where the screen is a different shape). The swipe back to the main screen is way too sensitive and easy to accidentally trigger. All in all this update has rendered the app fairly unusable, which is a shame as I loved and used the previous version daily.

Great! But Needs a couple of things added to it

Great to have when you don’t have bullet journal and great incentive to migrate notes because they disappear within 48 hours but I’ve found this not long enough. As we all have different needs, chronic illness etc or travelling, would be good to set the hours yourself maybe even up to a week.
It’s a good app however I have 2 more issues that I hope could be noted and sorted in future updates:
1) the reflection log happens automatically and if you open it up it automatically checks off and you can’t ‘ undo’ this.. sometimes I’ve opened it up accidentally and didn’t actually reflect or even forgotten to check off days that I did reflect and it doesn’t let me go back and check it or go back and delete a check. Would be helpful if you could double click it to delete a check and go back on past days and do it. Otherwise it’s not very incentivizing if it’s not accurate and you been using your actual bulletin journal every day but the app then doesn’t reflect it.
2) I read somewhere that the bulletin journal app would let you store photographs/ scans of pages from your bulletin journal, I couldn’t find this at first but realised it’s the ‘library’. It only lets you take pics of the front cover and indexes as a way of tracking your past journals, which is good but it would be so great to be able to take pics to archive certain useful pages to have on phone within app as opposed to in your standard photo album on phone.
Haven’t noticed any updates on this app regarding these things, really hope it can be :)

Great companion to the bujo

Great features; allows you to log things on your phone if away from your journal, with notifications to remind you. You can also log in to read motivating quotes and aphorisms, and more. Really works well with this journaling method.

Not worth the money.

The articles and help topics can all be found online I believe. The ‘reminders’ is just a calendar ping you could do in any of your calendar apps. And it doesn’t have a function for organising your to do list (that I can see) in order to have a tool (the app) for when you don’t have your journal on you. As a ‘companion’ it’s weak and should have been free for the money we pay for the journal anyway.

Very very helpful

I only found this a couple of weeks ago and it’s really helping me stay on top of my health issues and compliance issues. Wish I had found it before! I watched a lot of videos where people went to amazing lengths producing beautiful artwork in theirs but to be honest I find that takes away the whole idea of the bullet. I keep mine simple and to the point and it works well for me. I like how you can adapt it to your needs. I don’t bother with a daily planner as the weekly one works for me. I also use a monthly and a yearly future planner. I am enjoying journaling and it is fun to use as well.

Ryder, your app needs work.

The Bullet Journal Companion app appears to have been intended as a type of bridge for the gap between our digital and analogue lives.
No notebook handy? Record a task, note, or event digitally within the ‘Log’ section of the app. And then remember to physically write it down in said notebook before it forever disappears several hours later. Useful, right? Sure, but the practical utility (and justification of cost) for this app stops there.
Here’s a rundown of the other sections:
- ‘Reflection’ generates a daily quote, marks an in-app calendar when you’ve read it, and shows a timer counting down until your next quote will appear. That’s it. The app says that reflection is meant to “help you focus on the why, rather than the what.” In practice, this section is full of common, partial, out-of-context quotes (mis)attributed to historical figures, and the calendar is pointless. It would be equally accurate and inspirational for this section to perpetually show “LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE” and attribute it to Einstein, Jesus, or Marilyn Monroe.
- ‘Library’ provides a place for you to add tags and photos of your physical notebooks. “Organise and search your old notebooks” and “keep track of your content” is what the Bullet Journal website promotes. But, as other reviewers have discovered, the section limits you to 5 photos (one allotted to the notebook cover, and four to your index pages.) Without the ability to capture the rest of my journal pages, what is the point of entering tags?
- ‘Articles’ is a mirror of the blog from bulletjournal.com. Some of the posts and interviews are informative, but they’re already “delivered right to my phone” without this app. Additionally, the website blog isn’t updated with enough regularity that a special app is necessary to save me from missing “the best community content.”
- ‘Guide’ gives you access to the “basics of bullet journaling”. It succinctly explains the overall system and original bullet journal sections. It also lets you watch the How To Bullet Journal Video from within the app. I’d say that this section is moderately useful, but mostly for beginners.
- ‘Store’ is a place where you can buy a copy of Ryder’s new book and BulletJournal branded notebooks. You know, like you can on bulletjournal.com. I should mention that this section is buggy and unfinished. For example, sometimes I’ll enter the section and have the ability to buy Ryder’s book with a special “stealth notebook” included. The rest of the time I only have the option to purchase the branded notebooks, whose features only show text for 4 of the 6 bullets.
There’s also a ‘Help’ section containing photo credits, Ryder’s mini-bio, a link to subscribe to the newsletter (opens in Safari), an FAQ (also opens in Safari), and the ability to contact support.
And that’s the entire app.
Save your money and give the Bullet Journal Companion a pass. Until there are significant improvements and the addition of legitimately useful sections, I can’t recommend it for anyone. I have huge respect for the analogue Bullet Journal system, and would adore a practical analogue-digital bridge. Hopefully those changes come soon.

Take getting used to

I do like to use this app, if I can’t spend the to do sit down & do my Bujo however, I would find it more useful if for each item it can automatically add a date stamp as to when it was added. Just so it’s easier for me to update my Bujo when I get to it. Or items can be grouped by the date added.

It’s okay

I do find it useful for taking temporary notes when I don’t have my notebook handy, but the 48-hour limit is slightly too restrictive.
It’d be nice if I could think of something after work on Friday, log it in the app, and it still be there when I return to my work BuJo Monday morning.
Backing up my BuJo as photos would be useful but I don’t think this gap efficiently helps with that. Better to just do it using normal camera and throw into a note.

Invaluable additional BuJo tool

I find this app invaluable for those times I’m away from my BuJo. I like that there is only 48hrs to migrate entries from the app to my BuJo as it keeps me accountable and on track. Setting up the daily reflection alerts ensures that I don’t forget to check in on those busy days, or to migrate entries across from app to BuJo, which has really supports setting up a good habit. As someone new to bullet journaling, having the guide at my fingertips has been helpful as have the articles.

Good companion to a paper journal

The information in it is useful but the best bit is the ability to do quick rapid logging when you don’t have your journal to hand. The only addition I’d like to see is this syncing to iPad too.

No added value

Don't waste any money on this one. It doesn't do anything the website doesn't already show you and you're better off storing your photo backups in something like Evernote.
The philosophy for Bullet Journal is analogue (ie paper) which I get, but I think that has affected their offering here. What I wanted was something to 1. Let me store notes when I don't have the journal with me (the companion does that but deletes them after 48 hours, adding to your stress in a tribute to Mission Impossible). Then, 2. I wanted a safety net in case I lost my journal (I lost my paper diary once and swore I'd go digital from then on). The app only lets you take a limited number of photos and there isn't much functionality with this. If you record them in an app like Evernote then your text becomes searchable and you can mark it up etc.
Basically this isn't really a companion. It's more annoying than anything else and I regret paying for it.

Great Companion to Bullet Journal

As with Ryder Carroll’s book, it delivers a lot more than expected in terms of insight and topics covered. It is extremely well thought out and functional.
The Bullet Journal has changed my life, I am a lot less stressed and more creative. Highly recommend everything that Ryder does.

Don’t fall for it!

I purchased the Bullet Journal Companion app a few days ago, but I can’t get the Articles to come up. Is this a known problem, can you assist?
In general, I think the app is overpriced (poss should be 79p or free) for what it contains. I feel cheated. Nearly everything is simply a read across from bulletjournal.com (free!) and reflection and 48hr (limited!) place to record things to add to your BuJo are hardly revolutionary and can be implemented by a child in standard Apple apps - calendar alerts and notes! Seriously....

Good to help to start bullet journaling

There are lots of good points in this app. The show and share section and all the tips fir journaling are great. Most of the reflections are also good, but that’s down to individual preference. The logging section I find annoying. I use it to capture ideas when using my journal isn’t possible, but then have to remember to transfer the ideas before they disappear. I would like the log to last for 7 days. I use weekly reflections more than daily. The 48 hour limit is irritating.

Good companion concept

I like the app but hope it continues to develop, I love the reflection although some are not for me and my usual type of reflection but I use them as a part of my reflection. The log is great but needs some work as I can't log and reflect and if I can't access my journal between reflections thus is an issue. I would prefer a little longer to log as if I am out for the day (without the journal 'family time' I find by the time I can write in it it's gone, having dyslexia this would work great if it was more effective.
I also think more could be done to develop this, but the concept it good.

Great companion app

I'm new to bullet journalling but have found this app invaluable. I especially like the easy access to articles and the reflection reminders which are ensuring I'm making bullet journalling a habit. Looks great, works well - yes, it's paid but I think it's worth it. The Log facility is great too.

Gorgeous but basically pointless app

This app is beautiful, but it seems entirely pointless. I don't personally feel that the archiving feature is worth the money (as technically I could do this in a sidekick bujo), and while the reflection log is nice, again I don't feel it is worth the money.
The ui of the app is gorgeous and slick though

Useful though limited in application

This app will be useful to those who have more than one Bullet Journal as they will be able to log them and have a way to review the indices when looking for an entry. On the other hand this could easily be done in another notebook.
Hardly worth the money just for the reflection reminder. That could be done with the phone's calendar app or alarm app.
Stick to analogue.

Love it!

Really helpful companion to use with your bullet journal, very calming helps you be productive and mindful. The only thing I would like to see is all the 'quotes' you log on your reflection page/Days reflection log, that would be a really nice addition and more personal because you choose which quote you want to log it would be great to look back on them

Not worth the money

I love the bullet journal method of tracking actions, events and notes but this app offers little or no value for money. The information contained within this app can be found on the website for free. The app provides a alarm for reflection but this can be done in other habit type apps which are more flexible in their implementation. This app currently is not worth the money being charged.

Bullet Journal System Full Marks. Bullet Journal Companion App Nil Points

At £2.99, this was a complete waste of money. Timed daily reflections are repeated over and over again. Not sure how many are in there but I keep seeing and logging the same ones over and over again. Click on other headings in the menu and it takes you to the Bullet Journal website (which can be accessed free of charge.) There is very little difference to make it worthwhile spending £2.99. A really big disappointment.

Disappointed

Really underwhelmed with this app. As mentioned in other reviews this app is essentially a pretty package for literally THE SAME content in the website. I could almost understand if this was a 79p app but £2.99?!!! I feel like a right mug and I am hoping for some fairly rapid, interesting and useful updates to this app including some exclusive content. Such a shame.

Needs more work but has potential

I bought this app to help me stick to my Bullet Journaling which is what the reflection aspect of the app is for but it doesn't let you reflect when you want to reflect but makes you wait for the time you put to be notified. That's silly. Ryder please fix that or make the app free.
The rest is on the website and free so you don't know need to purchase this app. Wait until Ryder either fixes the current issue or adds more so you get value.

Not worth the money

This is less a companion more a how to guide with the store attached. (Oh yes, and there's a diary page. Wow.)I was hoping for something innovative which leveraged BuJo use. I got a manual and a way to spend more money. Free would have been about the right price.

This is not a Bullet Journaling App!
I love the bullet journal system. But beware, this is a paid for web wrapper around the website help content. I've just paid £3 for access to a free website. What an idiot I am!
