Price is ridiculous now…

Just cancelled after using this for many years, when it was free and an actual bank account. It’s just a headache now. Just gone up yet another £2 a month and I STILL can’t get regular transactions in my linked personal account to auto-categorise when they’re the same ones every month. Still have to do them manually! Well I’ve had enough, the price doesn’t warrant the usage so I’m out…

Unreliable cheap app.

It’s just been a constant headache since sign up. Firstly, it says Starling bank is supported but there was no option to add a starling account for open banking - so I had to open a support ticket. Resolved after a couple of days. Then try to integrate PayPal for invoicing, repeatedly get an error message, raise a ticket and I’m told it’s my iOS version that’s out of date - but I’m using the most current version, so it’s now been escalated. The app feels cheap and unresponsive and the desktop site is worse. I deleted an invoice on the website but it continues to show in the app, and won’t allow you to delete it from the app. It’s nowhere near as good as xero etc and I will be asking my accountant if I can change products.

Impossible to cancel subscription

They make you jump through so many hoops and then you get a notification saying 'direct debit will be cancelled later today' but you still get charged. This is the first time I've ever felt compelled to take the time to review and app because it's such a total scam

Multiple glitches in bank connections

I really really wish this app didn’t have issues with bank connections. I’m trying to resolve them. Started with just one bank and now several banks will not reconnect. I do ask on the help but just feel it’s going round in circles. If I can get this sorted in next few weeks I will raise my review as if the connections worked for me then this would be the absolute perfect app.

Bank won’t connect, support won’t help

App worked fine until I tried to connect my Monzo bank account. I reached out to their support they were very unresponsive. Have been unable to use the app for a couple of weeks now and looking at alternatives.

Nice idea but unusable

Nice idea, could definitely see the benefit in using this app. The countless bugs make it basically unusable though. Impossible to change categories, constantly hit with “contact tech support” pop up. Kinda dated/ugly UI also.

Great app but pleaaaase make these changes

I love Coconut. It’s my favourite invoicing app so far and the most well designed one out there in my opinion. Makes invoicing from your phone so simple, and tracking when client has received/opened invoice/invoice is overdue etc is all helpful.

Also great customer service - always quick and friendly.

Would love to see the below changes implemented:

- multi currency invoicing — this is the biggest one for me, I am having to use Coconut for my UK invoices and Xero for US/EUR clients. Yes, you can invoice the client in GBP and write an exchange rate in the note but that doesn’t work for me (also doesn’t work with the design of the invoice which emphasises the GBP total) - I want to be able to invoice the client in their currency at a consistent rate. I haven’t moved over entirely to Xero yet because I do prefer Coconut but I may do eventually, as I’d rather be able to invoice all my clients via one app and not be paying double fees for two apps when I could pay for one.

- Xero offer the option of editing your invoice email template, would like to see this introduced as I am having to manually edit them each time.

- would be really great to be able to choose others fonts or even upload a custom font to have more control over your branding.

- I prefer Starling’s business toolkit for their tax estimate, it gives a more accurate breakdown. Coconut also doesn’t factor in the personal allowance deduction to the estimate.

Missing money

Hi all,

In written this as a 5 star review but when on reality is not , money when missing whiles doing a withdrawal, they asking 45 days to get you the money back , this is not good.

Very poor performance from them and staff as they keep sending you messages saying your founds are available and once you login into your account there is nothing,

If you need a bank account or any other services, i will advise you to find other company because this on dont really care about they costumers/clients.

Now im over here struggling with no money and a kid to feed , if you guys looking for a trusted company do you not choose them .

Im already waiting for almost 15days , and all they keep saying to me is that they waiting on PPS, when asked to passe me to they mangers, straight away it got refused and my chats unable to text them after 4/5 hours thats when they allowed me to text them back This situation still on going , and they now saying they will close my account in 2days

If you looking for a trust account, I personally don’t advise you, to choose them very bad

A must have for freelance artists!

I’ve been using Coconut for three years now to keep track of my business finances and tax. The app has allowed me to link my business account and keep a running check on how much tax I owe in the following years Self Assessment. Love that it automatically categorises your expenses, but also has the option to manually select the correct category should it be something oddly specific to you. It’s made the finance / admin side of running my freelance business so much easier. Plus takes the stress off not knowing if you’ve put enough aside for the tax man or not! Really impressed with it and will be continuing to use it for the rest of my career. 10/10

Monthly subscription…

Very disappointed to find out after entering all my details that this app is only a 30 day free trail.

This info should be in the description, especially if you're claiming the app is free.

A big turn off for me, I do not agree with the under hand tactics that draw people into downloading an app in this way.

I will be looking more carefully at reviews in the future, there were a couple here waving the red flag but I didn’t spot them until writing this review.

Time to delete and search for another…

Used to be great

Used to absolutely love this app to organise my small business finances, but they’ve had an issue for at least 2 months so that you have to completely log in from scratch (4 step process including a code with a text message) EVERY single time you want to check. It used to be a code/finger ID which was great. It would be nice for them to offer a discount/offer for anyone that is actually sticking with them through this error. I’ll be looking to move my finances else where.

Very handy app

Really simple to set up and use and a much easier option compared to the alternatives. Categorising transactions is quick and very useful since coconut sends this data directly to my accountant.

I’m sure the software will become even more intelligent over time, as to start automatically flagging more transaction types based on historical data.

My only gripe (and it’s a small one) is that recent versions appear to keep timing out my session, rather than let me login quickly with Face ID.

Great, but beware of bugs.

Has been extremely useful to me as a self employed designer. However, recently I’m being logged out of my app daily and have to re-login with a code sent to me via text (not useful if you have appalling signal). Very frustrating, not to mention the period in which the app would *constantly* disconnect from my bank feed.

Hopefully these issues can be fixed, I’m on the latest OS on a iPhone 11 so it’s not old tech.

The navigation seems like a child designed it. Very difficult to chat to a human and the bot is useless.

Money Grab

I really enjoyed this app before it become a blatant money grab. You used to be able to actually use it to some degree without paying monthly subscriptions but they have introduced paid plans and without opting for one of them you get big red reminders over everything to prompt you to choose a plan, making the UI disgustingly difficult to work from. Now they have just introduced fees for transferring money to and from current accounts also. Even if you opt into a paid plan you have a limit on these transfers too before you need to pay the fees also. I would have loved to use the app to get my business off the ground, then opt into a paid plan afterwards, but they have made it very difficult to actually do this. I’m looking elsewhere now for a business account which is a shame as the app had great potential.

I was really excited about this app but when I came to connect my accounts I was unable to connect my HSBC account further back than a couple of months which meant it wasn’t usable for me. The online chat advisors were unable to fix it. Very disappointing.

Very expensive for what it is

This app works well as a single place to organise finances and keep receipts, but the monthly fee is a bit steep for what is actually very limited functionality. My business bank account provides a similar service for no charge at all. Extra functionality that would be useful includes cash transactions, accounts that can’t link via open banking, mileage logging, and completion of self assessment tax return. Make it half the price and add the missing functions and I may return, otherwise it isn’t worth it.

Nice but very buggy

I signed up to Coconut to support my small business. One thing that i would say is that the support personnel are excellent and very responsive. There is a neat chat feature in the app too. My issues though are numerous and frustrating. I will stick with them for a bit to see if I can operate better soon. First issue was with bank account verification on IOS devise. It kept timing out when it would jump between apps to verify. To fix that I had to use two devices to do this. The 2nd issue was that a lot of my bank transactions were being duplicated in the Coconut statement and the 3rd issue is that I cannot upgrade my account due to some payment related issue even though I am using the same account for the basic version. I can’t see any issues from the bank side which would cause this. The first issue i got round but the other two have recently been reported. I have confidence the support team will solve the, but a bit of a pain to be perfectly honest. So far I would be quicker managing all this the old fashioned way by using excel and sending my own invoices.

I signed up because the app offered a free account but now you have to pay £3 a month, it isn’t worth it when other banks still offer free services.

Also the coconut account itself was always slow to update payments, sometimes it would take days just to show I’d spent money on postage!!

Causes more agg than it solves!

Jan 2021 update: Trying to pay my tax bill (as we know always a stressful moment!) but Coconut won’t allow me to do it without the amount being reviewed by a manager. As in - it’s an app that helps you work out what tax you owe to HMRC - but causes you hassle when you go to pay them. The funds have been sitting in my account for this very reason, all year. I really hope some people don’t get caught out with this if they go to pay close to the deadline on Sunday! Not good at all.

Coconut is meant to make your life easier when it comes to expenses too. Travel is a major expense for the self employed, yet you cannot use your card at petrol pumps or train station ticket machines.

I will wrap up this tax year with them and move on - accounting with them provides more road blocks and stress for me than it solves.

Terrible app. I can’t connect my Staring account and when trying to upload a logo for invoices etc it just never uploads. This probably Is a good app If/when it works properly.

Wouldn’t trust these to give them my money! I’ve now opened TWO accounts with one of your other USEFUL competitor, in like 10minutes and have transferred very large amount of money once fully verified the business(which was done in 5minutes!!)

my rating reflects the true reality of HOW Coconut works! RUBBISH and i bet you won't survive long on the market with this kind of services...(or lack of them...😂😂)

Love the new Tax calculator, however....more needs to be done.

- Implement VAT into the claculator

- Improve the calculator design, the self employed calculator is much nicer than the version for Ltd accounts.

- Be able to sense invoices to more than one email.

- Allow invoice branding (company logo would be nice)

- Payment reminder feature in invoicing.

- Add support for TransferWise via the True Later open banking API.

- Fix the intercom chat bug where it crashes the app who e sharing a picture.

- Allow users to manage scheduled payments.

There are lots of quick wins here that would require limited development resource and go a long way to addressing customer pain points.

Besides the above Coconut is still the best app for auto accounting transactions!

So easy to use and well designed!

Well designed, easy to use and intuitive. Coconut has so many useful features, like an invoice tool to directly invoice your clients through the app and once they pay you, Coconut automatically matches the invoice with the payment and marks it as paid. There is a powerful client search tool for adding addresses and contact information to invoices too. You also get notifications for any account activity. Expenses/purchases made are auto categorised and every category has an information tab that gives advice and details about that category. You can add notes and attachments to all purchases, so you remember what they were for. You can instantly get an estimate of how much you are likely to owe HMRC at the end of the tax year and generating reports is really easy and there are lots of handy advice tabs to make bookkeeping easier. Best of all, the support section is very honest, upfront and transparent and the help team are efficient and quick to respond. There are lots of features on the roadmap (which is public) and if/when they are implemented, I really do think Coconut will be an all in one Accounting and Business account solution for Freelancers and Sole traders like me.

Great App - Better People!

I have to say that the Coconut app does more than what is expected. The basic features on the app do save small businesses A LOT of time especially in a world where everybody wants to be “quicker and more efficient”. Coconut still have features to add and they’re very transparent with the direction the company is heading which is always useful for end users to know. I’ve always been one of those people who would come forward and seek support when in need, and Coconut have provided this every single time without fail so I am really impressed with the level of customer service as well as the app’s usability. Coconut have just got it RIGHT. Out of the gate, this is light years ahead of any other business bank offering out there.

Brilliant customer service, I love being able to invoice direct from the app.

The app itself works perfectly, my problem is that I can’t make a single step/change in my own account without chatting a team member... It’s so annoying. I’m not five years old who needs assistance in everything. I’m perfectly capable of changing my own details and/or password if I have to/need to/want to...

New start up & new customer to Coconut

i have started a new business and opened an account with coconut. I had my first invoice paid in and the next morning my account was frozen due to money laundering/fraud checks. As a new business all of my business funds was paid in which subsequently means I now cannot run my business and work with my clients. I have forwarded the invoice and still my account is frozen.

This is a completely poor service as anti money laundering/fraud checks should be carried out prior to opening any new accounts?!

Coconut have now jeopardised my business and my relationship with my new clients.

I would not recommend opening an account with this organisation and I have learnt the hard way.

Stick to major high street banks for peace of mind and level of professional service as I will be doing in future.

Absolutely brilliant with more great stuff to come!

I’ve been with Coconut since it’s public beta stage and I haven’t been disappointed. It just gets better and better. I do all my invoicing direct from the app, match payments as they’re received, categorise every business expense, link receipts, keep track of expected taxes... it’s just fantastic.

They have loads on the product roadmap including integration with accounting systems and development is extremely customer driven. It’s so refreshing to feel that, as an end user, your wants, needs and general opinion really does matter.

The customer support team are prompt, knowledgeable and really friendly. I can’t fault them.

So glad I found Coconut when I did and honestly cannot recommend them enough.

A company that cares

Being a coconut user feels like you know the staff personally, they always reply to queries fast and efficiently with care behind it. I’ve worked a couple of times for coconut as a freelancer and they are constantly putting on events that show how much they care about their customers and getting feedback to evolve for client needs. One of my favourite new companies!

Fantastic, all in one App!

Coconut seem to “just get it”, the app is great, and ever being updated based on community feedback. As a self employed web developer it makes managing finances, tax and those kind of things so much easier, leaving me to get on with my own work!

Great app for self-employed

Love the app and all of its features. Very responsive support team. One thing though, payments can take up to 1-2 hours which can be slightly annoying if I need to make a quick order. Which In-turn has improved my organisation skills!

Great app, excellent customer service

If I could, I would give Coconut 4.5 stars. While I love the app and customer service deserves 10/10 there are still some functions that I feel are needed. Granted, many of these are on the ‘roadmap’ and I do hope to see them come to become available very soon. Notably receiving international payments. I do appreciate there are some work arounds using other services, also the option to have not only a cash/basis for accounting and ways to split expenses on the same receipt. Once these are in place, I wouldn’t hesitate giving Coconut 5 stars

Best Business Account

I love Coconut... I’m a new business start up and it’s been so easy to start this account. The app is super easy to use and very user friendly. The people behind coconut are so helpful and often tell you when there will be any scheduled maintenance in advance. They are always looking to improve and take on board any comments too. Communication is amazing. I don’t have a bad word to say about them. You can categorise your transactions really easily. Go for it, you won’t regret it!

A rare gem - an app and a service that shines

I’ve been using Coconut since the public beta, and I continue to be impressed. The app is well designed, easy to use, and has many useful features. For anyone looking for business banking as a sole trader or small limited company, I do not hesitate to recommend Coconut. Most importantly, the service is second to none, and the few times I have had to ask for support or point out an issue with the app I have been listened to by real people that actually care.

Game changer for self employed freelancers

I say it’s a game changer and it is, so why 3 stars?

First the negatives:

No support for Apple Pay yet

The app can be buggy at times, especially when trying to attach pdf receipts. Although there’s never any issue while taking photos of physical receipts.

A few times I was unable to see any of my attached receipts though this seems to have been fixed.

I’ve flagged this numerous times; there’s no running balance which can be a pain when I need to provide my accountant with a past balance for say, the end of year tax return.

This could be a MasterCard issue, but when using the TfL gates to the Tube network in London, sometimes the debit card won’t scan properly leading to embarrassing backtracking to try another gate.

NOW THE POSITIVES:

Instant notifications for all transactions, I find out instantly when I get paid.

Chat support team who are always really helpful and informal when you need them. No more robot talk from call centres!!

Attaching receipts to all of my transactions is a game changer. This avoids the whole shoebox situation at the end of the tax year!

Ability to freeze my debit card if it ever gets lost or stolen

OVERALL, Coconut has huge potential. I still find it way better than Barclays for my business transactions but it still needs some tweaks. Once they work on it a bit more and fix the minor glitches I would be happy to give it 5 stars.

Coconut is the ultimate banking/accounting mash up!

Can’t rate this app enough. It makes managing the finances of self employment so easy. You can send invoices from it at the touch of a few buttons, label incoming and outgoing finances easily, get a rough idea of amount of tax you’ll need to pay and it’s cheap to use compared to other accounting software. The team are super friendly and helpful and I love how they’re always trying to improve the service by listening to their users. The reason I’ve not given it 5 stars is because is does glitch now and again (nothing major) and there is still a little room for improvement but this is all part of the journey and I’m confident that the team will continue to make improvements to ensure this app is 100% perfect for its users. Well done Team Coconut!

Great for a Sole Trader like myself!

So glad I stumbled across Coconut when first setting up as a sole trader. I’m currently on the free plan which suits my needs and of course, saves me paying for a high street bank. (Every little counts at the start).

Super easy to invoice clients and the in-built expenses tracking and information is fantastic.

Without a doubt though, the best part is the on demand live chat customer service. Any queries I send over a message and get a reply within minutes with everything answered.

Highly highly recommend for any sole traders or small company’s.

Intuitive, easy & great support

Have been using Coconut since I started trading about a year ago and I run all of my accounts through it. Super intuitive, great support and helps me know what tax I should be saving. Love it even more now I can create and keep tabs on invoices through it.

Goodbye tax return stress 👋

Coconut has integrated my accounting and my everyday banking in a seamless way. Accounts used to be something I’d dread at the end of the month but now I can easily keep on top of them each day. With the tax return features I found my tax return this year way less stressful and feel more confident that my return is more accurate.

Never left a review before but...

They are an excellent bank. Easy to create invoices, flawless payments both sending and receiving and an impeccable customer service.

Only thing I would suggest Coconut work on is creating a more aesthetically pleasing UI.

Awesome Support with super clean interface

I have tried a few online banking apps for companies and have been disappointed with the services and app performance which has made me reluctant to make the leap from traditional banking to an online platform. Coconut whoever have been astounding. There customer service is excellent, there software works effortlessly and I’m able to invoice directly through the app.

I’m really pleased with their performance. I’ve a company of 12 employees and I can comfortable see myself transferring all my banking across to them.

Bank sync

For freelancers not based in an office with a pc constantly in use, not having the option to sync all your transactions daily with your accounting software is utterly a waste of time. The only way to keep your books on track is to find the time to sit in front of your pc, download a statement than fiddle around with the various columns than upload the file straight in your accounting software (often the various columns needs swapping or deleting) all above if you’re an experienced excel user, and finally tada! Invoicing ant tax estimation are decent options but not vital! Think twice what you need this banking app for before signing up. Hope the above is useful for new users

The way forward for banking for freelancers!

Very easy to set up. My account was up and running in 24 hours and I received my card two days later. No issues and they just added the invoicing option. Life and time saving all in one app!
