Hot mess

Anyone having grand dreams to run your website through your ipad might want to reconsider. Creating a blog post is nearly impossible.

Add a gallery? It doesn’t load.

Want to add a spacer blog? Doesn’t exist in the app.

Want to make a sentence H2? It’ll convert the entire paragraph.

Absolute mess. Adding media is awful. Just terrible. And to make matters worse it’s bad in DIFFERENT ways if you try to edit a blog post through the safari browser! Between both being open at once you still can’t make it work.

Great website platform and a cool app

Such a great way to be able to build your website. I’ve been using Squarespace for years now to host, build and maintain my website and it’s worth every penny. I love this app as it’s so easy for me to make edits and updates to my website from the comfort of my phone and iPad. Totally download it. 😊

Not an upgrade from the Portfolio app

I’m told by customer support that this is an upgrade from the Portfolio app but I can’t see a way to use it as a portfolio app. No offline syncing.

In some ways better, but in lots of others, worse

Where to start with this review... in some ways the app is an improvement on the previous blogger app, in that it more closely replicates the website functionality, and in theory increases what you can do from the iPad at last.

And yet there are still so many basic problems that I wonder how this ever shipped. Things that are actively worse:

1. Editing a post that has already been published is actively difficult. I can’t scroll the markdown view, making that view useless.

2. I can’t seem to create new tags for posts, only select from the ones I have.

3. The URL structure for posts authored in the app is different to those on the website, and they are less SEO friendly.

Things that still aren’t address in this version of the app:

1. Embed blocks still don’t support Soundcloud links, something pretty crucial for a music blogger, and functionality that has existed for years on the website. Why wouldn’t the embed functionality just use the exact plugin structure of the website?

2. You can’t animate images in the way you can on the website. It’s a small thing, but again... makes it hard to just use the mobile app without also working with the website.

As someone who increasingly focuses their workflow on an iPad rather than a laptop, it feels like Squarespace are really dragging their heels on providing proper support.

Drops key features

The two big problems for anyone creating blog posts in this app:

1. The post URL does not match your configured naming scheme (goodbye /blog/post-title; hello /blog/g1bberi5HhAHvGK)

2. You cannot create tags.

Both of those were fine in the old Blog app.

I eventually got a reply from support, who confirmed that new tags are not implemented, then suggested the naming scheme issues may be caused by custom CSS on the site. Rather than accept the goose-chase invitation to remove all customisation and retest their product for them, I plumped for manually entering the URL every time.

Was not a huge fan of the Blog app, but this is a downgrade for me. Hoping it will improve.

Confusing new app

I love squarespace and I used previously the blog app. However I cannot add tags or categories to blog posts. Even following the online help doesn’t work. Hoping this is fixed.

Not fit for updating your blog

Why did you retire the old blogging app? This app makes writing a new blog post really cumbersome! You no longer can simply insert a picture into your text. You need to split your text into multiple boxes instead.

No spacer block

The app in general works great for me and it’s nice to see a dedicated iPad app. The one thing I noticed was missing which is actually pretty important for layout work is the ‘Spacer’ block. On the first iteration of the iPad app that was released earlier this year it was there and then in a more recent update it disappeared?! Please reinstate this feature, it’s clearly possible as it’s been there already. Thanks.

Still beta

Needed to edit the footer on a client page, should be easy job but not supported on this app. Developer responded still need to use the web based desktop version. Why not just call this beta software and get feedback not launch as fully functioning app, see other reviews. Typical square space, all gloss, not much depth

Does the job

Whilst in detail editing of my website would always be done on my computer, this app is great if your on the go and need to adjust something slightly or if you can’t, you can hide pages until you can get to a computer at a later time!

The best thing I done for my business was to switch from big cartel to square space. Having been with big cartel for 7 years I was really nervous about the transition, but I can honestly say it was a seamless visual upgrade from one site to the other.

In my opinion the square space platform is great for new and established businesses alike and definitely stands apart from the other online retail platforms on the market.

Square space is perfection personified, congratulations on a job well done.

Frustrating that you can’t edit or add products

Although you can now edit pages in the app, you can’t edit product pages or edit or add new products to your store, which was the one thing I really wanted to be able to do on the go.

The Squarespace Commerce app allows you to edit existing products, but it would be great to be able to add new products using your phone, and honestly I’d prefer to have one app for all these things rather than three (Squarespace, Squarespace Commerce and Squarespace Analytics) which is not ideal if you don’t have a phone with a large memory. I like Squarespace, but given the cost of the subscription I think this is an area where there is room for improvement.

Works Perfectly

I have a number of sites on Squarespace, thanks to this app I am now able to edit anything I want on any of the sites from anywhere in the world using just my iPhone. This app is incredible!
