App alone not enough to prepare me for G5 exam

I found this app less accessible and less comprehensive than free online materials.
The app requires you to go through every part of a theory grade to access all the topics, which is tedious.
The number of testing questions are small - only one set per topic? I am concerned the ‘basics/knowledge and learning’ and the questions after do not actually cover everything I need!
The display is very small and notations can be difficult to read.
While a good idea, with lots of potential, I could not recommend this to anyone above other free resources I have found. I only bought this app because of its association with ABRSM, but I am disappointed with my purchase.

I just wanted to use this for revision but you initially only get 4 quizzes at each grade and you have to complete them all to see the next level. Do us a favour and make it unlockable without wasting time on the basics for those on the higher grades.

Very pleased with my purchase. I use the app to complement the theory trainer books, music theory resources and my piano teacher. You'd never learn enough just using the app but as part of a mix of study techniques it's a great investment and good practise for the online exam.
The only snag is that I think you have to unlock it grade by grade which is a pain if you only want to do grade 5 !

Just starting out learning music theory and for somebody who has yet to learn anything about music theory, I feel there isn’t enough teaching involved in preparation for the questions. Some of the questions are based on topics which haven’t even been covered. It felt like I was having a stab in the dark at some questions. It’s a really great concept that kept me hooked to complete Grade 1 in one sitting but it really does need more in the knowledge and teaching sections before the tests! Please improve this as it really is a fantastic start, just needs more info and explanations.

I’ve only used grades 1 & 2, for which this is an excellent* practice tool. However, it is clearly designed with the iPad in mind. On iPhone 11 Pro (so not even the smallest supported device), exercises such as intervals are so tiny, it’s hard work to read them confidently. It could be easily rectified by tweaking the layout to make them larger and remove useless borders. I’ll upgrade to 5 stars if that comes in a future update!
(* - UPDATE: Having just done the grade 2 exam I’ve realised that the app hasn’t been updated for the 2020 syllabus changes, so make sure you don’t rely solely on it!)

My son has used this for a few years but a lot more recently in preparation for his grade 5 exam to help with revision. He hasn’t used the information itself- just the questions which have been fine. It would have been helpful to have the sections in the app to reflect the sections of the exam- like 1) Rhythm 2) Pitch 3) keys and scales so you can revise the appropriate section. Also may be to reflect the kind of questions in the online exam.

This has the potential to be very very good but from a teachers point of view it’s useless. We need to be able to pic any topic on any grade to practice those topics and bits with students there and then. Not having to work through each section to get to to it. Introduce a teacher unlock all function and I’ll change the rating to 5 star.

I’ve found this really helpful, I bought it last year when I was learning grade 1, thinking that it would see me through to grade 5, however abrsm have since updated the syllabus and the app has not been updated to reflect the changes. Still useful, but do not rely on it for revision purposes.

This is really helpful in learning music theory and testing understanding - I would recommend purchasing it - apart from its missing explanations of ‘terms and signs’ in the knowledge and learning section... it just assumes you know all of these rather than gives an explanation which would make the app more comprehensive without having to look things up.

Good app, works well. How about now including an "unlock all levels" mode for teachers? I heartily endorse not letting pupils on to the next level until they have mastered the current one. But we teachers often demo the app, and we also encounter pupils who have come to us in order to address one specific theory problem. We're often too busy with teaching to play through all the levels ourselves!

This app is good to test your base knowledge but has areas for improvement.
If you make a true/false mistake, the app merely tells you that the correct answer is the opposite of what you chose.
It would be a much more useful tool if the app showed the actual answer to the question so you could learn and improve, not just telling you that you should have chosen true/false.
After all, this is surely the whole point of the app.
On the whole though the app is a good place to enhance your theory knowledge.

It won’t let me answer one of the questions and therefore cannot continue past this point. When you exit, you lose the progress made and have to start again.
Will not let you past the same question each time.

This is a fresh release so I’m willing to put up with a few bugs and display issues. So far nothing has been a show stopper, with the biggest problem on my iPhone 7 being some of the items, the scales in particular, are very small and quite difficult to see as a result. There are also some display issues, such as text on the screen at the end of a quiz being in a container too big for the space allowed, so you only see part of the text and can just about work out what it says.
One annoying issue is a Grade 1 quiz where I can’t get past a yellow “reasonable” effort, despite getting every question correct each time I try it!
On the whole, this is a very positive app design and I may revise my rating from 4 to 5 stars over time if development goes in the right direction. I definitely recommend it despite minor problems, but would suggest it’s better suited to a tablet than a phone... at this point in time at least.

Just bought this app to help my son taking Grade 5 theory exam next week. He looked at the overview and thought it would be helpful preparation for his exam. However, he has reported errors in the answers.
The correct answer to one question was not available to select from the options and this was the second error in the 8 questions he attempted to answer.
This app is not fit for purpose and my son has pointed out that if you want to pass the exam don’t use the app.
Will be asking for my payment to be refunded.

This is a brave try! There are still too many mistakes for a commercial package BUT as a self checking aid it is useful and youngsters will find it enjoyable. I downloaded it to my iPhone and could not easily read some of the small fonts in the exercises. The worst thing about it is the grudging ( and incorrect!) statement that I had got “most things right” when I had scored 100%. Typical ABRSM😊.

After years of wait, we have a great touchscreen resource for music theory. As with all applications, I have no doubt it will improve and become even more user friendly / streamlined as time goes by, but after a cursory completion of every stage from G1 to G5, with many questions varied and interactive, there is no doubt any reviews complaining about its first incarnation are missing the point, as this app will certainly help and not hinder.
At £5 it is on the expensive side for many of my students, but certainly worth it, nonetheless.
Well done, ABRSM.

It is not clear how this app is supposed to work - what is locked / unlocked. Some elements of the quizzes work, others do not. Very disappointed - will be requesting a refund.
