Excellent choices but ‘read aloud’ needs work
Really appreciating that some books have ‘read aloud’ on them, but it’s so buggy right now that it’s more frustrating to ‘read aloud’ than it is just to read the book. Looking forward to the day when books that say they have read aloud, do, and when read aloud is less buggy!

This is incredible.
I am so impressed by this app/product. It has had every book I’ve looked for so far. The notes work really well and it’s great for annotating. I’m using it for personal studies and just wow. I’ve already recommended it to several friends. Fab.

Bad software makes it so frustrating
Perlego is great for its range of books available and great price but the software is appalling! Text just stops loading on the page and I have to completely shut down and restart the app, then re-find my place on the page. This happens are 3 times per CHAPTER and is infuriating and very disruptive when trying to study. Please fix this!

A few minor inconveniences have been fixed with the new update!
A few minor inconveniences have been fixed with the new update! One thing that has been fixed due to the new lateral scrolling feature is that now, the figures and images in the textbooks are always visible. Before, they would not load at all, and I would have to zoom in and out to make them appear. Overall, great app and a great update. Thank you!

Perfection!
I love this app! As a geeky reader, I used to buy tons of books until I barely had enough space to keep them, and I also spent quite a lot of money. I was sooo happy to find Perlego. They have really good titles and authors that I love! 💜 It has been quite helpful because sometimes I bought books that I didn't end up liking the content of, but with this app, I can have a look through them without having to make the decision to buy. Everything they have is accessible to everyone with your monthly subscription -no additional costs! and they keep adding books every week, which is fascinating. I can even download up books from the app and read them offline, which is super handy, especially when traveling or in areas with poor wifi. 100% recommend it! 😍

Good content, awful interface
Perlego has great content but is let down by the app and web interface. It’s worst for ‘PDF only books’ on iPhone where pinch to zoom is essential but the pages glitch and scroll randomly. Web access has similar but different glitches. Have never got ‘Read Aloud’ to work on my iPhone which is where the feature would be most useful. Get these things sorted and I’ll subscribe again. If you only read books on a large computer monitor or laptop you could have a better experience but that doesn’t work for me. I don’t have a laptop and don’t want to sit at a desk to read.

I love the content it provides but if we’re talking about the app functionality itself, when I go away from it and come back there has been a white screen the last couple of times and I’ve had to redownload. Also annoying that you can’t scroll down, just horizontally. Please amend 😟

A Godsend
For penurious researchers, Perlego is a resource beyond riches. I have used it for 3 books now and it continues to provide valuable information for my projects.
If I have one niggle, it is that, as a chartered librarian (retired), my inbuilt search-strings skills to drill down to the precise information I want, do not work because the indexing is too general.

The app is really good however would be good if you had the dark mode option for the dashboard and a dictionary, or the look up function enabled, it would be a 5 stars.

Not a good app
Love the concept, dislike the execution. It’s improved in terms being easier to read and they have updated contents pages so it’s somewhat easier to navigate through books. The problem is that downloads constantly expire and offline mode almost never works so it is rubbish for plane and train journeys. I will not be renewing my membership which is a shame as I love the idea and the library selection.

The best thing about Perlego is that it has an amazing collection - books I don’t even have access to through my university but the app is horrible. It constantly glitches where I have to constantly restart the app. It’s also not very compatible with my disability software for text to speech. If the app was better I would continue my subscription past the trial but I’d rather just buy books .

Whenever I leave the app, and come back the page I’m on is blank.

Useful for university
The site and the app are quite useful for university. There is a large library of books all on different topics and is quite useful when doing research.
Cons:
-my books would not download, tried to log in again and that did not help. Had to reinstall app to be able to use again.
-The website version times out midway through my reading.
Suggestion:

Not a bad start
Hi there thank you for developing this app, it’s a real money saver, eternally thankful! So I think for IOS users it would be great if you can somehow make it more smooth like the iBook or kindle app. First of all, I can remove books from my list, I cannot make notes once I have highlighted. I also think it would be good to include page numbers, particularly making references easier. Finnaly I think of there are more features like line spacing and justified formats, it makes the experiences of reading and highlighting more enjoyable. I look forward to the next update, I hope you’ll incorporate these things into it. - also think you could have a Spotify style, click on the authors name of a book, which then reveals all their other books, like clicking on an artist that shows all their albums. Also it would be great to have a scroll feature. - But like I say, I think it takes the best of Ibooks and kindle, you can’t go wrong.

Amazing app!
This app has helped me so much with my degree! And I will continue to use it for my Masters!
My only need for improvement would be to see an scrolling format on the app for reading, as it would make it a lot easier for me to read on the go as I have learning difficulties.
Other than that, keep up the fantastic work!

Selection gets better! But app issues...
The selection of books gets better all the time... I'm regularly surprised to see new releases available here to borrow. Very much appreciated. The app is a bit of a pain from time to time (iOS 16, iPhone XR)... like another reviewer mentioned, leaving the app and returning sometimes results in a blank page and the need to force close the app. Highlighting can also be a bit hit or miss and I don't think it's possible to highlight across screens. I'm also not aware of any way of exporting highlights. Bulk deleting from the library would also be great... I've dozens of books in the library that relate to previous pieces of work and are no longer relevant.

Book downloads are queued indefinitely at the moment. Word selection has been disabled (aka can’t look up words) so I sometimes have to leave the app and restart it.

Looking forward to more updates
You know how other reading apps give options of highlight, note or lookup / define when you select a word? Well, Perlego only has an automatic highlight function when you select a word. I mostly read on my iPhone so I’m not sure if this is limited to iPhone users only. Slightly frustrating especially if you’d like to look up a new word without leaving the app. I think this would be a great addition.

Frustration!
My experience of ‘Perlego’ is increasingly frustrated by the app failing to fill on opening, particularly when I have been using it successfully but then temporarily closed it to look at my emails or Google etc. I have to delete and reload it. Even then, it does not always refresh and I am left with a blank screen. What am I doing wrong? It has got to the stage that I do not intend to renew my subscription.

Can’t turn page!
I tried the free trial of this app to read a few books that weren’t available via my university library. Whilst the app lacks some functionalities that would improve user experience (e.g. split-screen mode), it was at least functional - until I was partway through one of my books! Now, no matter how many times I restart the app, it no longer allows me to turn the page, and the whole thing just freezes. Frustrating!

Poor usability
The app often freezes, or showing a blank page, especially if you switch away from the app (for example, to check email). This means having to quit the app and relaunch it. I found yesterday that all the highlights that I had done on the app were not reflected in the book on the Perlego website. This means I have to use just the one device, which is inconvenient- I have been using my iPad to make notes etc in a different app, and that’s fine if using Perlego on my desktop, but if I am using this app, then if I switch away to make notes, often when I come back to Perlego,it needs relaunching again, making for a time consuming and frustrating experience.

Great app but room for a couple of improvements
I love the App, really great.
A few problems. When I go in to the app it is often a blank screen. I have to keep closing the app and reopening. I then delete and reinstall regularly so if this is a common issue it would be helpful to look at it.
Secondly…. The page numbers change if for example you have split screen. This makes it difficult when referencing so if the page numbers could align with the book that would be great

Loads of books and great value for money
So many quality books that cover a broad range of subjects! The highlight and note taking tools are great and I’ve also found it really easy to generate my citations with their built-in citation tools. All of that for a reasonable monthly fee.

Does not support split view!
Really annoying that the app doesn’t support split view on the iPad. This makes it very difficult to write notes from book which defeats the entire point of having the app. Also, it would be great if there is a way to export highlights as a pdf or word document. The iPad app needs a lot of work and hopefully you are able to apply these changes and updates soon!

Disappointing…
Great concept but once you download a few books, you can’t download or read anymore — even if you unload others and they’re supposedly marked as downloadable. I’ve resulted having to read books through safari which is a bit jarring concerning it then butchers the highlighting function and just makes everything sucky overall.
I really liked the accessibility of the app when first downloaded and it was so convenient for on the go use! I’ve tried contacting via email but atlas, no reply. I do hope this can be sorted soon!

Why can’t I highlight on my iPad?
I’m currently forced to do all my uni reading (of which there’s A LOT) from my desk as I’m only able to highlight from my desktop and not from my iPad. This can’t be real. When I look it up it says if this is a feature you want let us know. WHY WOULD THIS NOT BE A FEATURE PEOPLE WANT???

Poor iPad functionality
Need Perlego for university but they have me over a barrel. The iPad user experience is dire; no scrolling pages (swipe only) and - unforgivably - it’s not possible to highlight with an Apple Pencil. Incredibly frustrating. Really poor show.

Poor, doesn’t accept Zimbabwean cards
I work in Zimbabwe, and have visa and USD cards. The app doesn’t take my local card, and tries to charge me more than double, and charge me in GBP when I use my USD international payment card. Very poor.

good idea but needs work
the idea of a textbook subscription service is great, but perlego is held back by lack of functionality in the app. these things have been mentioned in other reviews (scrolling instead of page turning, progress across the whole book, etc) but my biggest gripe is that it doesn’t support split screen on the ipad. if i’m going to have a digital textbook, I need to be able to take notes from it at the same time as reading it, and this is the sole reason I can’t use perlego. extremely disappointing, as I could overlook the other issues quite happily. the kindle app supports split screen just fine, so I would look forward to a patch that would fix this for perlego in the future, since it’s obviously possible.

App still needs work.
Perlego is a great service, however there are some issues that frustrate me, waste my time and reduce its usefulness.
Highlighting remains hit or miss. Sometimes it works as it should, but often, i.e. at least once every session I use it, it either won’t highlight or won’t remove a highlight.
Annotating is hopeless. There is no facility on the App and this severely restricts Perlego’s utility for me.
Even on the website the annotation function often does not work for me. I can read an annotation (if I have been lucky enough to make one), but cannot make new ones.
Such a pity.
I am carrying on with the subscription though as the access to books that I need is excellent. However, when I find another service that means that I can annotate and highlight easily then I will cancel.

App needs some work
I absolutely love this service but please make the functionality better!! It is really off-putting in comparison to other services- I’d rather read a book from my library app than here if it is available.
Firstly, please make it possible to see how far you are into the whole book not the whole chapter, because frankly, nobody cares about the latter and everyone about the first.
Secondly, I’d really appreciate the ability to sort within the individual categories, especially by popularity.
Thirdly, please make it possible to scroll down rather than simply slide across the pages.
There a few others, but these are the main areas of functionality that plague me. But if you can fix this 100% 5 star worthy and worth every penny :)

Can’t remove highlighting, find citation tool, or search
Can the team please explain how to remove highlighting and find the citation tool in the iPadOS app? The instructions on the website to remove highlighting don’t work. And the button to get the citation isn’t visible in the app.
Also, how do I search inside a book in the app? This is a major shortcoming.
And why are the page margins so narrow?
Lastly, is there a simple way to find books that are available as PDFs with consistent pagination?

Life changing!! Fantastic content & great reading experience
I’ve been using Perlego for three months now and it’s fantastic!! To have access to so many of the books that have been on my reading list for so long all in one subscription is a game changer. It’s also fantastic to be able to read across all my devices and I love how all my notes and highlights are grouped.

Incredible resource
The range of books is brilliant and although the tech isn’t perfect I can get through huge swathes of reading and note taking without too much frustration. It’s actually changed my life as I need but don’t have access to these resources. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Average at best
The resource is great but as a reading app this is pretty rubbish, particularly for study. It is possible to highlight and bookmark, but you can’t undo these additions and you cannot make notes in the app. Also if you leave a book and go back to it, it doesn’t take you back to where you left off, meaning you have to scroll through and remember where you were.

App frustrating
Downloaded this app as service is provided by my University.
Some points that frustrate me and feel the developers should review,
- Not all books are available within the app, unsure why as it doesn’t seem logical to which ones are not available, maybe there is a logical reason, I just havnt found it
- You can read in landscape or portrait when you rotate your phone although it doesn’t hold the page or part of page you are on when changing between the two, it seems to shoot off to a completely different page
- It seems impossible when you want to look at a table for example to enlarge it meaning I have to take a screenshot to then open the picture to enlarge it.
This could be a great app but needs some further thought.

Apple Pencil support on iPad?
Discovered Perlego last week to help widen my reading for my LLM studies. Loving the app and its functionality. Clear and easy to use, with an impressive range of titles relevant to my subject area.
Having used an Apple Pencil on my iPad for the majority of my work lately, it’s a pity the app does not support this. Having the ability to use the Apple Pencil to highlight and handwrite notes would be amazing!

Great service, app good but not great
What is amazing is the library. Great for the price and really just well curated. Feels genuinely like a decent research library in an app.
Some bugs seem to exist in the performance of the app— I don’t always seem to be taken to the page I last read when opening a book again (it’s off by two or three) and some features that exist in the better reading apps are missing, like linked footnotes.

Dreadful, don’t bother
Perlego is a nice idea but bad design renders it useless. The online reading experience is ok but
– You can’t highlight text
– You can’t make notes
– You can’t copy text (so if you need to quote in a paper you have to copy it out yourself which is not exactly convenient
– Without page numbers it’s hard to cite books although apparently there is supposed to be a referencing tool. But guess what? I can’t find it anywhere.
So I downloaded the app in the hope of an improved experience. No such luck. All the problems were carried across apart from now I can highlight text. I can add bookmarks, but can’t remove them again (why?). Still no note making facility and worst of all the layout is appalling in landscape view – why is it stretched all the way across the screen rather than displayed in a column like on the website? Horrible.
So that’s the end of my Perlego experience. Subscription cancelled. Bye!

The best reading platform: Perlego!
Perlego has an amazing website and an incredible app where you can browse and read thousand of books of different topics. Not having to buy every single book that will end up accumulating dust in the shelf or end up as one more product consumed in my virtual library is an amazing response to a world that needs to promote accessibility and positive environmental impact. Not good enough
If there’s one place I would like to read online books, it would be on an iPad. So why is this app so abject? It is basic, laggy, forces you to turn it on it’s side! in order to use it. Doesn’t sync lists between web and app fast enough. No refresh button. I could go on and on. I’m sure the service is good; it bloody well ought to be for the price but the app is pants.
UPDATE: The search (which is pretty inept on all platforms actually) won’t return the correct result for Capital in the 21st Century on the iPad - fIne on the web. And I’m still waiting, several hours later, for it to sync my reading list. I’ve lost confidence it ever will.

Some annoying bugs but overall good
The reading experience is quite good, but there are some things that get really annoying while navigating the app and detract from the experience:
1. When scrolling through a list of books, selecting one to add, then going back to the list, it jumps back to the top of the list rather than the place where you paused. So you have to scroll all the way down to resume your browsing.
2. The mobile app updates your library much slower than the website. I added several books to my library and could not see them on the app, but they were there if I checked the website. Only restarting the app solved this.
3. I have started reading 3 books, and only the first 2 are shown under 'continue reading'. The third has not shown up at all, I had to go through my Library to access it every time. Is there a limit on the number of books you can start/read St once?
If these issues were fixed, this would be a really great app!

Ticks all the boxes
Yeah this app is pretty spot-on! Makes reading on the go so much easier and saves me lugging around a load of heavy books. It’s also awesome I can read up on a load of random topics not related to design! Recommend Blitzscaling by Reid Hoffman!

Buggy
Perlego is great, but app is quite buggy. Doesn’t actually save to my library when I press save book to library. When I’m scrolling down through books, if I click on one then go back, takes me all the way to the top again. Also, pages take a while to load even though I’ve downloaded the book.

I mainly use this to fill my commutes so the offline reading function is really good for the tube. It’s really easy to use and has meant I read way more than I did before. I’m a big fan!

Perlego is wonderful
Many people says they prefer proper paper books to the electronic versions. This , as a recently retired academic, I don’t understand. Perlego has allowed me to read instantly any kind of books both offline and online which are available on its platform without worrying of buying them separately like kindle or other E-reader platform does.. as I can buy subscription on monthly or yearly basis and most importantly can cancel the subscription at any given time from the accounts settings without any catch. I once had to visit a specialist bookshop for, wait weeks for delivery, then go pick them up. I can actually now search fro a half remembered quote to use in papers I am writing. On the leisure side I can search for books without getting a crick in my neck looking at high shelves, and carry my whole library with me on holiday. I can read all day without the pain in my thumb from years of holding books open. I can search and find new books from favourite authors and download them without worrying of buying them separately. Beautifully simple
Having used a few different reading apps - this is by far the most cleanest and simplest in design without losing any functionality. Huge selection of titles available in an ‘all you can eat’ monthly price. Excellent

I love this app!!
I have been reading with perlego since I first started uni and it’s been a lifesaver, so now they’ve got an app it’s really handy for reading on the tube and stuff! I’ve told all of my friends about it, would definitely recommend.

Really good content, app is improving
Ive been using this for a while and was told I could try the app as it’s still in beta phase: the content is amazing. It’s sooo handy being able to read on the train, my only issue is the app is slightly clunky but they say they’re improving it! Worth a download.
