SEIZE FORBIDDEN TREASURES. SUMMON ALIEN GODS. FEED ON YOUR DISCIPLES.
BE WARNED. This game has no tutorial - part of the challenge is figuring out how to play. It's hard, but keep trying, and you'll master it. Good luck!

Cultist Simulator was first released on PC and has more than 200,000 players all over the world. Now we’re bringing the cosmic mysteries of Cultist Simulator to mobile.

Cultist Simulator doesn’t hold your hand. Experiment, expire and transcend death with a story-driven legacy system. Over time you’ll learn enough to wrestle the game to its knees.
• Intense, immersive narrative – Combine cards to tell your own story.
A hefty novel’s worth of choice-based storytelling, from the creator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea. There are many paths through this game of ambition, appetite and abomination, and many ways your tale can end.
• A rich Lovecraftian world – Corrupt your friends and consume your enemies.
Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Translate grimoires and glean their lore. Penetrate the realm of the Hours and win a place in their service. Cultist Simulator brings the peripheral horror of Lovecraft’s tales to an entirely new setting.
Expand your knowledge with the DLCs: New Legacies, New Ascensions, New Mechanics...

Version 1.7
Over a year ago, I first gave this app two (2) stars. I played it a few times, couldn’t understand it, and deleted it. In the three weeks since I re-downloaded it, I have won twice, lost countless times, and become completely immersed in Cultist Simulator’s compelling and mysterious atmosphere.
Let me be clear: this game is hard. It takes time to work things out, it’s infuriating when you unwittingly end the game before you can win. But once you’re into the (admittedly steep) learning curve, it is incredibly satisfying to know how to combat various events and happenstances, and when (/if) you win, it feels well earned.
I don’t review many games, only if they’re awful or amazing. Cultist Simulator is amazing. Exactly my kinds of game, exactly my kind of atmosphere. 10/10.

Adore the game, I’m a long time fan. But on multiple occasions I’ve had hard crashes that don’t allow you to load the save file, the only option is to begin again. Beautiful game idea ruined by aggressively hostile user interaction in the meta-game.

Version 1.4
I have seen many reviews that claim this game is too difficult of makes no sense in some regards, they are both right and wrong I believe.
Yes the game lacks a tutorial and does not help you at all but that’s the point, it’s a game where the more you play the more you learn about how it works, when I first started off I barely had any idea what everything did or could cause to happen but now I have at least enough to be able to know when to hold off or go all in, trying to rush the game is not a great idea either as it can cause you to fall into trouble your not yet ready for, patience is the key here for the most part.
Yes you have limited resources and such at times and again you have to know when to stop, the game allows you to pause it for a reason it’s not just to stop whatever’s going on but to in my opinion allow you to think before you act and decide how best to use those resources and when to use them.
Overall while the game can be challenging once you actually get the idea of how everything works at the basic level your more or less set for the entire game as you can then advance your own knowledge as you go and if you die or lose the game then pick yourself up and try and try again.

My favourite game now.

Spread a dozen variously coloured kitchen timers out across your floor and set a few of them going. When one finishes, set another one going. Move them around a bit if you like. Every so often, throw one of the timers out of the window. When you run out of timers, the game’s over!

Version 1.3
I like the idea of this game, but the mechanics are just too frustrating to be enjoyable. The card dynamics are too fiddly, it's too grindy, and you're forced to restart too regularly for what feel like arbitrary reasons. I kept going hoping it would have the same magic as Fallen London, but it seems they've kept all the souless grind, but sucked out the engaging narrative.
The lack of a tutorial is meant to be clever, but ultimately it's just covering up what a messy, poorly designed game this is. The mechanics are confusing at first, but ultimately revealed as simplistic, with the only real challenge being the extreme time pressure you're put under.
I've updated this to a 1 star as I can see the devs have ignored similar complaints before. People aren't going to keep trying to master a game that is ultimately dull & unfulfilling.

Fascinating, infuriating, MASTER THIS AND YOU MASTER REALITY!

It’s a shame there is clearly a lot of thought that’s gone into this game but ultimately it just can’t really grab my attention. It’s irritating as it’s too fluid and too confusing.
If you are going to make the game mechanic so loose I think the UI should be a bit more fixed so you have some concept of the core elements. I end up with a board of floating cards and categories that jump around the place, sometimes combining similar cards sometimes not.
Also the learning curve is all over the place, instead of introducing elements slowly over time you are left with dealing with everything at once whilst not even really understanding what the goal or purposes is.

Beautiful, absorbing, challenging, mysterious, deadly.
I’ve played this five times now and am scarcely any closer to knowing what the heck is going on, but loving every minute.
‘Cultist Simulator’ requires you to keep a sharp eye on your vital signs and have one eye on multiple clocks at all times. Figuring out which elements interact is highly rewarding but can lead you down dark paths.
I’d advise keeping a notepad handy to remind you what you need to complete tasks, as many resources will decay before you can use them.
I’d have expected great things from the creator of ‘Sunless Sea’, and while this looks simpler, it isn’t, and you have no time to hang around working it all out.
If you like Lovecraft, the occult, mystery, thrillers or steampunk, I’d check out this game. A bargain at the price given its replayability.

I love the game and only have a few suggestions but to be clear it’s a great game and my suggestions are just that suggestions. Firstly, another save file would be great so I could try the new dlc when they come out without having to die in my current game. Secondly, the game takes place on a table top I think and it would be neat if you could maybe change it to a different theme perhaps you could unlock them by completing ascensions. Lastly, I love the music but an option to maybe skip some of them or play a specific one would be pretty neat in my opinion. Overall I love the game but I just think these could be neat improvements but of course I’m not a game designer so there just ideas.

This is an outstanding game, but only if you enjoy deep narrative, riddles, cannibalism and a little bit of grinding. Personally, this game possessed me completely after I overcame my impatience and frustration. No one is going to hold your hand, there is no tutorial. If you are thinking of getting it, I’d say go ahead. There are many dark and delicious secrets to be discovered here.

This is exactly the same as the pc version now with touch.... ignore the bad reviews from people who do not understand the game and what it tries to achieve. It’s an immense grand strategy played with cards and timers with over 400 hours on the pc and quite a bit on tablet I have managed nearly all of the end conditions and it’s still great to sit down and sink a couple of hours into this, and you can still be surprised good job

It’s called Cult Simulator for a reason
I myself am very interested in the occult and in the real world there is no lead or guide to such practice of the invisible arts
This is so deep and realistic in a way of the occult
It’s all about learning and if you fail, don’t fret that’s the point. Just like real life.
By failing is the result of mastering the game.
I wasn’t very good at playing which everyone won’t be but in time you will master it
I had a cult for a very long time and never lost
I’m the end I succeeded but went down a dangerous..almost Lovecraftion path.
Don’t let anyone tell you it’s bad just because it has no tutorial to it.
It’s amazing and I want more of this.
Also there is a tutorial but you have to find it for yourself and it also depends on what occult lead you want to learn.

Lovecraft-like horror in a single-player card game: awesome

Do yourself a favour and play this on the largest device you can. Because the game table will up with cards (some of which stack or decay), times which pop up and scupper your plans, all during which mysterious books hint at an ages-old occult world with flavours of Lovecraft but which is entirely its own thing, and all the better for it.
You will die ignominiously the first few times, but once you get the hang of it, the game has the classic Civilisation “just one more turn” nature, so that you thought you’d only been playing for half and hour but now 2 hours have passed.
Or maybe it’s just the game’s weirdness leaking out.

This game has a lot of depth to it. The more you play the more there is to discover within the narrative and world - it took me quite a few frustrated tries to ‘get’ it but breaking through the learning curve is extremely satisfying and once you do, the game really begins to open up.

There is a lot of beauty and potential in this game and I love the idea of having no tutorial - it really adds to the sense of uncovering Lovecraftian mystery.
The sense of place is fantastic, the writing mature and the game does a great job of conjuring up a journey through 1920s arcane mysticism.
However, boil away the sinister musak and the intriguing card text (which, after your umpteenth playthrough, you really will be doing - believe me) and this is just a horrible, horrible, time stealing grind.
I guess the decision to have everything mediated by timers was meant to instill a sense of panicked urgency but what it actually does is mean that you become a slave to the second hand, watching multiple counters time down and frequently hitting pause. It also means that when the inevitable death / madness / arrest / murder comes, all that grind awaits you again even to just get to where you got to last time (and the time before that, and that, and that...). The fact that you can choose alternative starting characters after your first game over (which do, tbf, significantly alter early game gameplay) only distracts from this fact 1-2 times.
I think I’d be in love with this game if it was based on a turn-based system (with the timers replaced by turn counters) so that I didn’t keep having to mash to the pause button in order to read all the really great writing; and if the save system struck a better balance between preventing save-scumming / preserving the sense of mystery on the one hand and the brain numbing tedium of repeated early game grinds.
I encourage the developers to think about a physical board game version (if they haven’t already) - would make for an awesome one!

Sixteen hours into my play time I walked behind the Watchman. I backed the game on Kickstarter because I was intrigued to see what Alexis Kennedy would do with his own new studio, played the prototype and thought that the core was solid and was also pre-disposed to enjoy the theme. I waited a long time to dive into the game for life reasons but it caught me at the right time this winter. The sense of place the game conjures is second to none. All the incidental text, the way nothing is certain, physically moving the cards, the lack of overt tutorial, everything is set up to make it feel like you really are delving into the occult. I don’t know how well that will hold up once I know what I’m doing of course but my suspicion is that, for me at least, some mastery of the systems will lead to more desire to role-play and explore rather than panic about not knowing what goes where.
For me the game’s greatest strength is its atmosphere, but the secret best thing it’s doing is that it’s always incredibly clear what you can do at any given moment. Through the prompts, the text and the meta text on cards (their attributes and explicit explanatory text) I always had the sense that knew what I could be doing. The trick there though is that it doesn’t tell you what you should be doing, or even what the things you can do will achieve. There is true exploration happening in the game and that’s something really special.
As a new player though I found that incredibly daunting, especially given how quickly things can end if you aren’t paying attention. There are some fundamental mechanics which I missed for too long because I was scared of Dread or the Detective. Now that I have a handle on how to deal with them minute to minute I immediately want to go back and start exploring more from the position of relative safety that knowledge brings. As well as that I feel like I’ll have more fun taking the game slowly now I know roughly what the endgame looks like. Having said that though I’m still wary of jumping right on in to the ‘new game plus’ like mode, I feel like I want to capitalise on that and play the game without feeling quite so on edge for an hour or so.
I’d highly recommend anyone with an interest in exploration and storytelling in games pick this one up. If you really enjoy it I would also recommend getting a copy of Alex Owen’s wonderful “The Place of Enchantment” for a solid overview of Fin de Siècle occultism in British culture.

Cultist Simulator is a wonderful eldritch onion. Initially it tells you very little, letting the player test different combinations of cards to uncover the game for themselves. This is an incredibly refreshing approach and once the loops of the game uncover themselves it becomes super compulsive to uncover the vignettes of lore. Thoroughly recommended.

An extremely intriguing game that has a 4D depth behind its 3D interface. You can really sense the love that went into its creation. It isn’t a game you play to rush through to an ending or to ‘win’ - rather one that accompanies you on a journey, nudging and guiding you with its hauntingly beautiful narrative, dipping a toe into alchemy and disappearing round the next bend in a way that creates the illusion of forcing you to tune into personal instinct rather than reason.
At the moment, there is what seems to be a very obvious bug that I’m finding frustrating, because I’d like to explore the transformation side of the game and I think this might be a key - it isn’t possible to visit the club with Sulochana, despite her instructing you to meet her there - the start button remains greyed out. Hopefully (unless I’m missing a trick!) this will be fixed soon.
A really good piece of game design, nonetheless.

Enjoyment beckons, but at the expense of sanity

Like the makers’ other games, it’s a great idea with novel mechanics, but falls flat when it comes to usability, longevity and player-centric design. Too often, the ‘mysterious’ and ‘explorative’ gameplay ends up being a bit of an excuse for bad interaction design. Be prepared to quickly understand the workings of the game, only to be twice frustrated by how it layouts different classes of cards (not convenient, painfully similar) or how you will frantically need to drag cards into slots vaguely trying to remember which obscure combo allowed you to put another obscure thing in another. At the very least it should upgrade to better helper functions once you have understood the game. I feel oddly punished for understanding how the gameplay works, as the interface punishes the experienced player to provide an initial brief figuring out period.
All in all, I recommend this game for its honest and brave stab at creating new concepts, but I will caveat it with above frustrations.

This could be a really good game, and it is clever and original. However, there are just too many things going on, too many concepts to remember, and too many mechanics to try to understand, all while your hard-to-get, harder-to-develop cards expire and degrade within a couple of minutes of getting them. Honestly, it might be more fun and rewarding to actually try to create a cult in real life.

The game is soo much fun especially when commuting as time seems to seamlessly pass when playing this game which I feel is the most important aspect of any mobile game.
I have reached one of the many victories so here a few tips for newcomers:
Remember the game wants you to experiment and find new things out by yourself, thats why there is no tutorial. It took me many lifetimes to finally reach one of the endings, but learning and experimenting is part of the fun!
One thing i would definitely mention is to make sure to start slowly, and frequently pause and READ CARDS. You should always keep your verbs occupied unless you are waiting for something particular.
On that note, books are the source of all knowledge in this game. This is one of the main ways to progress the game as it will unlock different lores or rites.
The other main way to progress in this game is to travel through the spiritual realm called the "Mansus", you will first need your find your way there, maybe being *passionate* will help you start on your ascension. Enjoy fellow occultists!

Cultist simulator is a truly unique and well made game, and though it is difficult at times, that is one of the charms of it.
I’ve read reviews saying that the game is too hard, confusing etc but I assure you, it is! Cultist simulator is not supposed to be easy and just because it doesn’t hold your hand throughout the game doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. The game literally tells you to experiment, because the developers knew that you would die time and time again before actually getting an ending.
The game itself is unique and is very original, it’s something that you wouldn’t expect on iOS.
I haven’t been playing for that long but I’m hooked! Note that it can be a little hard to read on navigate on the iPhone but the developers are working on it.

Mediocre and perhaps overrated

This game is quite interesting and exciting when you first start. Reading the description and reviews, it seemed like a very mysterious game as you’re suppose to find out how to play. When I first played it, it did match the descriptions quite well. It starts off slightly confusing and all but as you continue you start to read more of each card and try to look for clues on what to do.
But it does get quite frustrating and in the end it feels like a waste of money. The mechanics works, the graphic are good, and the idea is interesting, which earns the 3 stars from me. But it feels very difficult trying to make significant progress in the game. Trying to gain new cards just to study another card is hard because you don’t get a tutorial. Your character always seems to stop developing at one point because of the difficulty.
My point is, the situation of “I can’t seem to get past this point” happens too often. This makes the game frustrating and boring, while defeating the purpose of the game.

There is a lot of text in this game to learn what’s going on and it was way too small for me on my iPhoneSE. I havent been able to get the gist of what the game is about, such a shame.

The Darkness calls me for one more descent

The growing circles of the passage of time consume my waking thoughts. When I dream it is of a dark table in an empty room. The distant glimmer of the lamp light urges me to persist, whilst vague sensations of despair and loss seem to gnaw at the edges of my very soul. Will I ever reside within the not-walls of the mansus? Must I eternally flutter moth-like against its fenestrations, compelled to persist by the flickering lamp light beyond my reach?

Intriguing as anything I’ve played

The title says it all really. A fantastic game for anyone looking to uncover the mysteries of an occult fantasy world.

Beautiful game

I do have the PC version, so had a head start. Now I can play it wherever. Hypnotically beautiful and intriguing. It will not be everyone’s cup of tea. If it’s for you.... you’ll know.

Compelling game

I made the mistake of buying this on PC. Not because it is a poor game, but because I could have bought it on IOS two weeks later for a third of the price. Even though I have not reached far, I enjoy the game and find it compelling. It is perfect for IOS because you can pick up and play, leaving it when convenient. The only drawback on iPad is that the table seems a bit crowded, but so far it is manageable.

Impenetrable yet captivating

10/10 not a clue what I'm doing but I'm getting farther each time and it's quite captivating. I don't even think I've done any cult related activities yet as I seem to die very soon after forming one, but I'm sure that will come!

Patience is the key to this addictive card game

I downloaded it yesterday on a whim and I’ve been rewarded with an intriguing game that appeals to my sense of the unknown, curiosity and darkness.
I loved that there is no tutorial as such, but I would like tips on how to progress and unlock more cards.
Time will tell if it will still be holding my attention next week...

Great game of the Great Game...

Anyone of a Lovecraftian bent will enjoy the purple prose in this mysterious game of decadent occult research, where the mystery begins in working out what the hell you are supposed to be doing. I helped kickstart the original PC version, and have been waiting for the app to come out, since it cries out for a touch interface. The game cunningly gets you to adopt the role of the very seeker after forbidden knowledge you play in the way *it*plays, since you spend the early game fumbling around trying not to starve, get sacrificed, or arrested for outraging the art world (!) whilst messing with forces you really don’t understand.
Still loving it, but there is (still) a bit of a hurdle to repeated playthroughs of this rogue like sort of card game, in that after each death you will find yourself hurrying through a largely familiar round of toil and study before the game opens up into the world beyond...
It could benefit from a few more paths to try at the start, and some more devious routes to the first unveiling of mysteries.
Otherwise, and especially at the intro price, give it a go. There really is nothing else like it out there (though the devs Sunless Seas and Fallen London have the same louche baroque flavour they lay very differently.)
Even with the sameness of the early game, you owe it to yourself to open the third eye and journey within...

Crazy crazy addictive

I was excited about this game coming to mobile and I do really like it, only problem is I have an iPhone SE and it strains my eyes after a little while, and sometimes it's tricky to navigate the cards. I know you can zoom in but you miss some of the action. Otherwise would have been 5 stars.

Waste of money

Far too much going on with almost no reason behind it all. It’s a messy complicated and unhelpful mess. There’s not enough time to read the story before things expire and most of the time “decisions” aren’t actually choices.
Really really regret buying this on a whim (it had good reviews at the time) and would not recommend it to anyone at all

I’m not a real cultist but I play one on my iPad

Amazing writing as always - the lack of a tutorial is a blessing more than a curse, as it makes finding your way around the systems feel like rewarding discoveries.
The “card table” is a little clunky to navigate, but it’s a fascinating game and well worth the time and patience put into it.

This is a great game, full of sinister atmosphere and deep mechanics. Without spoiling anything, you are drawn into a Lovercraft style world of strangeness and the occult. Will you thrive and come to lead, or fall to madness?
The game functions by the mechinism of having various task cards on which you place various resource cards, bringing about results after a short time. It gets more complicated than it sounds, with you having to manage multiple timers like a set of spinning plates, while making decisions as to how to spread your limited resources to best advance your cause.
I played this a while ago on PC, and was pleasantly surprised to see it appear on the App Store. It always seemed to me an iPad was the natural home for a game with such tactile mechanics and this turned out to be the case. This is the best place to pay an excellent, if slightly niche, game.

Superb

Nothing happens in this game. The mechanics are a bit like Reigns - there are cards which you add to a pile to make things happen. It’s just that all of the things you make happen are utterly useless, and then just as you make the slightest bit of development your character dies of… something. And then nothing carries over to the next life.
Maybe I would get better at this if I kept playing, but I’ve ploughed a number of hours into this and nothing changed. Character, slight development, dead. Reset. No clues. No pop-up hints. Nothing.
I don’t doubt that there’s a great game in here somewhere. But I guess it’s too infuriating for me to constantly have nothing happen and call it entertainment.

Stunning

Although the Mansus has now left its mark upon my soul, it is with some relief that this version of the curséd card game burns in my mind. Surely the King in Yellow could not have designed such fiendish rules. I cannot tear myself away...

This is a card game where you start a cult, do strange research and die. It’s so compelling. I was worried it wouldn’t play well on mobile but it’s surprisingly natural. Beautiful spooky music, great writing. Lots of spooky text.
