Has potential

Has potential as an ad-free alternative to the more highbrow end of Youtube. The content at present seems a bit limited with only about 100 content providers I would guess. The interface I don't find very intuitive, such as how to go easily from one video in a series (when you have just finished watching it) to the next one. There is room for improvement in the flexibility of the search function too.

The app has always been a little flakey for me, but the content is great and PiP support+no ads is a win.

Buggy wita extremely poor interface

A disaster app. Video can disappear with only audio playing - no way to get it back other than quit the app. The interface is hide and seek concept despite being incredibly restricted and simple. How did this make into the App Store is beyond me yet alone as a paid service.

Worth paying for BUT very buggy

First of all, the content on this service is great and genuinely worth paying for with the Curiosity Stream deal.

But... I don't remember using an app with this many bugs in years! For example, switching to picture-in-picture video often just closes it instead of opening the floating window; switchimg from horizontal full-screen to vertical view to go back to menu and watch further doesn't work all the time and I have to restart the app instead; the app often freezes on loading screen and I have to restart it to fix it; forwarding video by double tapping on the side is not consistent. Or when I tap to play a video, the app sometimes only starts playing the audio the app actually switching from the menu at all and I have to restart.

Great in concept, bad in practice

In theory i like the concept of Nebula, I can pay a single fee that supports a service with great content on it, rather than having to go and subscribe to every creators individual Patreons. However, my main problem with Nebula is everything is newest content sorted, compared to the algorithm based discovery on YouTube, which becomes to be a problem when you're new to the app, a massive backlog of content which is difficult to access, no way to filter by exclusives vs early access, and the majority of videos when you're sorting by newest are from daily upload channels such as TLDR (no hate to tldr-- their contents great)

Good, but there’s an awful bug

The video content is great, the issue I have is that when I full screen a video, I can’t exit full screen unless I close the app. It makes using the app really annoying

Just updated and now the app pauses the video every time I turn off my screen. Aggravating extra steps to turn the screen back on, pressing play on the lock screen, then turning it off again to listen to things

People need to know more about this app!

This app is great. The only issue I can see is that it’s pretty hard to find the right series and stuff like that. For example, if you see a new video from a creator you like, it’s not that intuitive to find the other videos in the same series. Maybe this can be streamlined in the future?

I won’t take any marks off as the app functions perfectly and it supports some of my favourite creators 😄

Videos disappear off screen and become unselectable after finishing playback

This keeps happening after watching a video it bugs out and prevents you from selecting a new video. You can hear the audio but nothing will show on the screen, you can tell that switching video does something as the audio changes but there’s no video

I really want to like Nebula…

I really want to like Nebula, but I find it incredibly difficult to use.

It does have the good content that I signed up for, and the videos are extremely well made, but I get suggested far more videos that I just don’t care about. Despite having followed a number of creators, I still have to go in search of them, whereas what I really want is them being valued at the top of the Home Screen, so that I can easily click on anything new from them. Instead, my Home Screen is flooded with videos that I’m just not interested in.

I presume this is more an App issue, so hopefully something can be done there.

I’m not saying to go as far as YouTube’s algorithm, but there is a reason for why I have followed who I have followed. Promote me their videos.

Cast and airplay problems

Can’t cast nebula to my samsung tv, but I can AirPlay. However, if my phone locks (automatically after 30 secs) or leaves the app, the AirPlay will then stop. Making it impossible to watch something. Doesn’t happen with other apps using the same devices.

There is no nebula app for samsung tv, so that is not an alternative either.

Nonetheless, the app as well as its content and the creators is amazing.

Love the app could be improved

The content is amazing! Classes and Explainers. I would love it if you added a feature to Auto download new explainer videos (enable for a particular channel and disable for others) some of my favourite creators release videos that I’d like to be downloaded automatically.

Another feature that’ll be great is a “Hide watched Videos” button. This is to remove already watched content from My Library section of the app. These videos can already be accessed from the channel itself so it doesn’t really need to be in my Library.

Broken chromecast support, iffy AirPlay support

The chromecast support is dire, the title, thumbnail, progress bar etc never disappear from the screen, they just stay there, making it almost unwatchable. The AirPlay support plays at an awful bitrate, makes all the content look low res and cheap

Great App, 2 feature requests

I love the app & it works really well! Full of great content that is constantly being updated.

I would love support for the widescreen function on large screen iPhones, which is supported on the web player, as many videos would benefit from being viewed this way.

Adding an option to turn off autoplay when you click on a video would be amazing. The autoplay is particularly annoying when you just want to add a video to your downloads & don’t want to watch it straight away.

Content amazing, App terrible so bit of a balance

If you want a review of Nebula then may I say 5 star its YouTubes best stuff with no ads, just loverly and I really really enjoy it.

If you want a review of the app then well its a work in progress, sometime the videos do not load, often they pause halfway though and it crash, always its slow.

If you said put up with the app then the service is amazing and I for one am never going to cancel, if the app was a tiny bit better than no question get in now, as it is ask if you have patience and if you do then jump right in.

Amazing content and no censorship

I replaced YouTube with it and no regrets. Small fee, good quality content and NO STUPID CENSORSHIP (science based educational channels are not censored). Please stay this way and support creators. Lacks small features but has all the important ones, like video downloading, preview window (which is in beta stage on YouTube and available to everyone here).

Great content, good app, but devoid of principles.

I’ve long followed many of the independent creators of this platform on YouTube and jumped at the opportunity to support them directly and be able to watch their content ad-free without giving traffic to censorious Google/YouTube.

Now, however, I am dismayed at their banishment of one of their creators for committing a bit of ‘wrongthink’ on a controversial subject (elsewhere, even — not in anything posted to this platform).

This goes entirely against liberal principles of freedom of opinion and open discussion and is exactly the sort of censorious nonsense that soured YouTube.

I will be seriously reconsidering my paid membership of this platform when it comes up for renewal later this year.

Content is good…but

The content is good but the app does need a few tweaks. One would be continuous play rather than having to pick up the phone when a video ends.

Would also be good if you could get the app on smart tv’s, when casting from a phone you end up with an odd size aspect.

Great platform, bad app

There are a few problems I’ve picked up on from my first few weeks of use (iPhone 12, iOS 15-15.0.1);

1. Links to other videos in descriptions take you out of the app and into a browser… this makes no sense.

2. Search function is just bad, doesn’t work very well.

3. The “My Shows” section is a bit simplistic, it would be easier if I could just see a list of creators I’ve subscribed to and find videos that way.

Overall it’s a fantastic platform, however it is easy to tell that the app feels relatively “new” (i.e. under developed). Just needs some work and maybe a revamp of layout, general UI improvements would make this a 5* app.

Great but missing basic features

Love the content and the app is nice too. But there are a couple basic features missing that make it difficult to use over YouTube. A ‘watch later’ option and playback speed settings would be enough to keep me on the app over YouTube (and to give 5 stars).

Refreshingly focused

Downloaded after watching a YouTube vid with a sponsored segment (never even looked at the sponsored content before!) Somehow this is an app where I can always find something I want to watch without being pushed to watch absolute nonsense.

Good start

Like the app is good but there is little content. Also when you try and watch videos don’t play in chronological order. The app seems unable to refresh and get new content. On a browser you have much more content. So I don’t know why its lacking here...

No longer plays in background

Until recently I regularly used nebula as audio only by starting a video and turning off my phone screen to do housework etc, in a recent update it seems this feature has been disabled, the video stops when backgrounded, rendering the app useless for what I use it for most.

Slow to start

I have fast fibre and fast wifi, but this app take anywhere from 30-60 seconds to start/render. It’s so frustrating it makes this app unusable.

Bad app, good platform

The app is still quite new and needs a lot of improvement to fix bugs. The featured page takes too long to load and some videos wont play until you close and reopen again.

Also a miniplayer feature like on YouTube would be nice

An unusable app

The idea is great and I want to support creators, but the app just doesn’t work for me. When I open the app it sits there trying to load videos. Forever. Eventually I give up and go and watch on YouTube.

Even if I go directly to the creator I often find that videos that have already been on YouTube a day are still not on nebula.

Can’t rotate screen

Really want to like this. I am enjoying listening to some exclusive podcasts and seeing some exclusive content from the people I already watch on YouTube, and I want to support the break away from YouTube as a platform.

However, I usually end up just watching any non-exclusive videos off of YouTube as on my IPhone 12 mini it seems impossible for me to rotate the screen so I can view it in landscape mode. Additionally, some videos and podcasts are improperly categorised such as a podcast I listen to called “ghost notes”, which is definitely a music podcast but does not fall into the music category for some reason.

The platform is definitely functional, and has some decent content, but is tricky to navigate and watch videos on compared to YouTube.

Great great... but...

Nebula is a great app and gathers very high value content

Something I found while using the app is that every time I set a notification for a creator, it goes away every time I close the app, which means I don’t get any notifications for new content!

Good content; poor app

The title says it all. The content is good quality but the app needs work.

It seems to take forever to load the content when you first open it. There is no PiP (only background audio) and you can’t browse other Nebula content while watching or evening listening to a video.

Fix these and it would be 5 stars.

Content great, but app needs real work

The Apple TV app in particular takes forever to load, often waiting more than a minute to reach the main menu.

The content itself sounds very compressed when playing and isn’t really a match for YouTube’s audio.

Love Nebula, but not the APP

Whenever I open Nebula, wether on the iPad or iPhone it takes ages to load the content. Before I thought it was my iPhone SE 2 but than I had the same lag on my iPad 8th gen.

Another issue I cannot understand is the notification. They are on but I don’t get them when someone posts a new video.

Nebula is great, the content is super interesting, usually Nebula exclusives are very well-made and we can sense that creaters double their efforts for Nebula.

A small feature request would be a watch later button, I often find myself going through the list and wanting to watch too many things at the same time!

Edit: critical bug regarding creators appearing as having no videos resolved with time.

Please add support for subtitles, higher than native resolutions, some rating, feedback, or comment system, and a place to list sources for further reading / proof of claims. At the moment, video descriptions are only brief descriptions.
