I love Scala Radio, and Scala Radio Premium makes it even better

I've been listening to Scala Radio since it launched, its the station that's in between Classic FM and Radio 3 I've wanted for years. Scala Radio Premium takes Scala Radio to another level. You get no ad breaks, and extra radio stations to listen too including in the park, piano works and classical bangers.

This app is ruined by the desperate measures by Bauer Media to get us poor listeners to sign up for premium. When I am listening on the radio and then go and use the app to try and identify a tune I want to download, I find everything which has already been played on that programme has been listed as Premium and cannot get the info I want without committing to a free trial. Musicians lose out on a sale and I miss out on songs or tunes I would have liked to listen to often at my leisure.

Resolving the ‘adverts’ issue

I used the app ad free for about 6 months, then, very irritatingly, ads crept back in and no matter what I tried I couldn’t get Scala ad-free. Finally I got this advice from their customer help (Krish) and it worked:

Please can you complete the following steps below and let me know if this works:

Unlink your account to Alexa. (Make sure you Alexa is off)

Once unlinked, please restart you App

Open your App and sign inwith your Premium account.

Re-link your account to Alexa via the App

Please follow the steps to link your account.

Once linked ask your Alexa for your station

A wonderful addition to the genre

Scala Radio has been extremely well thought out to fill a gap in the market where it might have seemed that one did not exist. The range of music played is much wider than found on its competitor stations. The presenters are able to talk about much more than just telling you what you have just heard or are about to listen to. Although only a young station, it has a level of maturity that makes me feel very comfortable and want to stay and enjoy its company. I’ve been a listener since the beginning and during that time it has grown and developed and just keeps getting better and better. The advent of Scala Radio Premium, where you are able to listen advert free for a small monthly fee, with access to a huge range of other classical stations, together with other stations from the Bauer stable, has really set it apart from its main competitor. This also gives the facility of skipping tracks if there’s something which doesn’t quite fit your mood or taste. I would have given 5 stars rather than 4, but unfortunately when using this app to AirPlay to my Apple HomePod mini, there are still issues with the sound dropping out for no particular reason. This can occur when trying to use my iPad for something else too. If this issue could be addressed to my satisfaction, I would be more than happy to move up to 5 stars.

Scala over the last three or four years has helped my wife and I stay calm and would also say reasonably sane. The worse time being the Covid lock down.

We moved to Scala when we heard Simon Mayo was having a program of his own, never looked back.

The main stream programs such as radio two were our original source of music entertainment, they then started at times to become irritating.

Listening to some of the presenters uttering just what I term as pointless juvenile prattle akin to being in a school playground, I began to judge the presenters in what light they saw their audience as, what mental age and intelligence do you think your listeners are. The radio would go off.

So back to listening to the beeb, on another day, then as if a red mist moment had just hit my consciousness RAP - Ahhhhhhhg! an absolute insult to music, radio straight off and stayed off.

I have a wide scope of music interests, having in the past played in three bands, soft rock, country, soul with a mix of R&B.

I still have my Premier acoustic set of drums. I recently donated my electronic set to one of my granddaughters Pippa who was showing a natural rhythm, drumming on anything nearby. See her 8 year old face light up, good for the soul. ❤️

I have always had music on in the background from early days of radio Luxembourg, that dates me.

My special thanks to your presenters for their company (and not talking drivel). We start the day off with Charles Nove, the occasional dry humour brings a smile or laughter from us both, keep it going Charles.

Currently have the company of Angelica Bell, so calming to listen to, thanks Angelica and thank you to all of the presenters for your valued company, so many of you I do not wish to miss any of you out.

Think from my feedback you may suspect we like Scala 😂😂, yes definitely.

Wow! How wrong can you get it?

App works fine but the user interface is appalling. Why can’t you select a show from a schedule of past days? You can only filter by presenter which just grated as it’s not the easiest way to access content. When you actually find that show you wanted on the day you wanted it’s let down by the lack of controlling features. You can only jump forward 5mins and unless you use the slider you can’t go back unless you restart the whole show. Other apps for radios get it so much better. I know this is a start but its not that difficult to see whether others do it better and then maybe copy them?

Good overall app, but could do with improvements with accessibility and content

The app is good overall and I am making use of the premium facility so that I don’t have to listen to the adverts. However, I think the app could be improved for visually impaired people if all the buttons had labels on them rather than having images only, which is the case with some of the buttons in the app. Also, it would be nice if premium listeners could see what music is playing during advert breaks

Terrible app

This app seems to have stopped working altogether on ipad. I deleted and downloaded it again but still will not play unless you want to listen live, which I don’t. All Bauer Media seem interested in now is trying to sell you their “Premium” monthly service - based on their crummy app, there is no way I would give them any money. Shame, as they have some good shows and presenters, but this app is like something out of the ark. Really disappointing

Great station, but problems

A great station but annoyingly the app doesn’t travel well. After a period in the car when I had no signal the app just gave up and I had to restart the stream manually… hardly ideal when driving. After a second period of no signal the app logged me out and forgot I was a subscriber entirely, so when signal resumed it went to the login screen. I’m as well using the “free” service on DAB. Fix those and it would be 5*

Scala’s winning formula

Charles Nove’s breakfast show on Scala is the most enjoyable start to the day I can find on radio at present.

The tone hits just the right balance of knowledge, humour and warmth.

As for the music content, a show that can include the Sibelius Andante Festivo, a string arrangement of some My Bloody Valentine, John Ogdon playing Litolff and a blast of Morecambe and Wise is surely the one I don’t want to miss!

I don’t have a chance to catch much output through the day, but enjoy the overnight sustainer content on Scala too.

A nightmare when trying to choose to reject Scala’s wish to track my phone across the internet. I am paying to use the app to avoid advertising and yet the invasive nature of the app is unrelenting. I do like Scala but will close the account and delete the app rather than be scammed by Bauer’s cynical attempt to monitor me at ever step. How the hell can you trust a company with this attitude?

Scala Premium is really good with no annoying ads and a load of themed streams. However every day it forgets I’m a subscriber and I have to randomly click things until it remembers, then stop and restart the stream to get rid of the ads. Please fix it!

A once great music station!

I listened from the first day, great presenters and music even if the ads were a little cheesy! Now ruined by silly ads. Rapper Bingo on a classic radio station- really. Noisy BMW cars revving their noisy competition engines in your ear following on from bird song - how appropriate! And the Ford ad with a demented person screaming unintelligible words at regular intervals- great Scala - a great idea ruined!

Any station that starts up with this titan of radio on it must be worth the entry fee, and they have Mark Kermode as well!

One point, which I have already messaged about - could a subscription service be explored - to have the output ad-free? That would get the 5th star from me - I’d already rate it 4.5 - although I admit Simon being around less is a two-edged sword. Value him more when he’s on. Miss him more when he’s not.

Wonderful

The availability of easy to navigate content means listening to Scala is even more enjoyable. Consistently available playlists and what’s playing now is very helpful for someone not well versed in classical music. To top it all Simon Mayo and Charles Nove are key presenters. Casual classical

I enjoy ‘space’ in the evenings and ‘in the park’ is excellent on a winter morning around 6am, but some of the classical interpretations of moderns song vary in quality and can grate on the ears. One string quartet ‘mix’ or ‘mashup’ of Back in the USSR and Winter by Vivaldi was particularly repulsive and at times, the quest for ‘accessible’ descends into utter cheese. I’m not quite sure what the point of Scala is when Classic FM already provide the less musically diverse, safe, version of Radio 3. Its pleasant enough just some music is ‘offensively bland.’ Needs to define its musical identity with more rigour and risk. Right now its musically very narrow.

Refreshing

As a professional musician I was so bored with the limited playlist of classicfm that I gave Scala a listen, and I am loving the quirky variety of music and the crazy way they put things together. Where else would I have heard the Glass violin concerto ( 1st Mvt) overdubbed with Debbie Harry singing “heart of glass??? Thanks guys, and the birdsong between 2 pieces is an inspired idea👍👍.

Only discovered Scala Radio after seeing the ads, but it’s just about perfect! Adding in the fact that they’re working from home, the presenters are brilliant, and the mix of music very easy to listen to.

Great station, poor app

Love the music on this station but...

Trying to use the listen again function often results in an upside-down screen or completely black screen.

There’s no way to use the slider to search through a show for something you want to go back to. Can only skip forwards or backwards 30 seconds at a time. This is tedious if you need to go half way through the show to find what you’re after

Great show ... app full of glitches

Love Scala, as with other shows I wish there was a back catalogue option, rather than just 7 days. However, things to improve are, there is a 10 sec forward and back, but it seems you can’t push the time line, it pops back to where you are. Also the screen goes to black randomly (whilst still playing the show) so you can’t exit out, which results in having to reinstall the app.

Since discovering Scala I have gone from listening to pop music to your selection of classical, film and orchestral pop songs plus other choices

Your best presenter is of course Simon Mayo and the reason I now listen to Scala

I only wish you were available on Freeview and also via Tunein as I spend quite a lot of time out of the country and it’s difficult other than over my phone which isn’t always possible.

I also feel very sorry for the people in and around Dover as we lose you on our way to catch a ferry so they don’t have the pleasure of listening to your great station

Excellent station. Has fantastic presenters who ARE worth listening to. They give information of music pieces; writers, orchestras, which for a beginner like me gets a fuller picture of what is being played. Listening for proper grown ups, and I’m 47! Thank you, you are stretching my knowledge.

Thrash Metal to Classical

I am 47 and a 80s and 90s metal head Sales Director. I discovered Scala this week only and am a complete addict. I never knew the diversity of classical music. Some I zone out but on my drive to and from the office it is a total de-stress. Not yet had the chance to listen to Simon Mayo, but Simon, I met you once in the art tent at Greenbelt with you wife. I love listening to Scala radio and with the app I can listen anywhere - in the woods is one of my favourite places!

My only wish is that the app had the name of whoever is currently presenting on top (sometimes it has who’s show it is but they might be off for the day) but I might have missed the name of the presenter and if I want to email in, I can’t until I work out who’s talking!

Great selection of music, some excellent presenters- especially Mark Forest, Charles Nove and Simon Mayo. The number and type of adverts was at launch and until recently appropriate and not too intrusive- but recently there seem to be many more adverts and advertisers that don’t seem to fit with this particular station. The number and type of adverts has become distracting and irritating. I appreciate that this is a commercial station but I’m starting to listen more selectively because of the volume and type of adverts.

Excellent Scala

Having avoided anything classical since I could make my own choice of listening I have done and was a confirmed Radio 2 listener. But earlier this year changes occurred as we know and for me that radio station was no longer to my taste. Scala Radio station.

Perfect radio station when it opened in March, just the nice balance of music and talk. The presenters have a fresh approach on the airwaves: too bad that the bosses at Scala had chosen to follow the dumbing down road when it comes to their lifeblood commercials. I understand that as a station that depends upon advertising it can’t go on as it did in it’s first 6 months but, it surely has the editorial power to not follow the pack. Please, please have a look and make a good radio station into a great radio station.

Initialisation Error message “it’s not you, it’s us”. Cannot start at all. Have reloaded, works once or twice then errors again

Scala Radio

Scala Radio is the best new station I’ve been fortunate to tune into. I love the vast variety of music which surely must hold something for everyone. I know it has completely revitalised my musical tastebuds and I switch on every morning with nothing short of glee at the thought of what I may hear and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

The presenter are excellent and down to earth and the chance to take part in the show is an added bonus.

Great prizes in the competitions too. I particularly like the imaginary one that Charles Nove offers for answering his questions of the day .

All in all, well done Scala. I’m in for the long haul.

Just lovely to have Simon back on the radio, and what a huge bonus that the music is classical and modern classical. Thrills me every day, and I often listen again on catch up.

One thing, are you able to show the tracks played at the bottom as you do when the show is live.

I bang in about Scala to anyone who will listen. I love that the music includes film and gaming music. Just looooooove Scala.

I’m 63 and listen to radio 4 when I wake ( need to know if the end of the world is nigh) on my 1/2 hour journey to work I listen to radio 1, which I love. Back home I listen to a lot of radio plays, Arts shows and I’m afraid the Archers. But I feel you have set an excellent basis to get all ages listening, maybe look at taking part in some festivals (Latitude Glastonbury Hay)

Gosh haven’t I gone on but I’m such a fan.

Love scala hate the app

I don’t have dab radio so have to use the app. It’s really clunky-trying to play back shows should be so much easier than this . I don’t seem to be able to delete shows I’ve listened to. I would like to be able to download shows to play in the car as I don’t have the data to stream them when I’m out and about. Quite often the app doesn’t work and I listen to scala on my tuner instead. You can now play the show through sky on the tv-what about free view?

Constant error message

Am I a part of the country where I can’t add you to my dab, so reliant on the app. For over three weeks I’ve now been getting the ‘it’s not you it’s us’ error message when trying to connect via the app. Fix it please. Love the station but for the moment you’ve lost this listener.

Nice to Hear - But Not a Great App

The app will not work on my iPad. I have to fiddle about to get it and it only plays live. I have created an account to listen to past programmes, but it again will not work. Every time I click on the app, it asks me whether I want to open it in the App Store. It then tells me that I can not connect to the App Store. This is while I can access the App Store under all normal circumstances. Maybe its me, but I don’t think so.

Great home screen, terrible layout and clunky

This is a great station, particularly the Orbit and Kermode shows for any soundtrack/electronic buffs, but the app really lets the station down. On my iPhone, really difficult to select a show as very little in the blurb descriptions to differentiate between what’s a new show and what’s a repeat. Also no way to scroll forwards and backwards other than to jump forward 5 mins! Needs work, but great station.

“It’s you, it’s us”

That’s the error message which I’m continually getting. I’ve deleted and re-added the app 4-5 times and for a while it’s plays, however it’s again showing the error message. I’ve never experienced this with an app before - it’s not fit for purpose.

When teething issues have been resolved the ability to jump forwards AND back with 30 second / 1 minute / 3 minutes / 5 minute intervals would be a valuable feature on Listen Again. For now I just want to be able to use the app in the first place!

Great station, app needs attention

I love Scala and especially having William Orbit guide me through his classical and electronical selection. I use listen again more than listen live and the app never seems to know which day to play. I click one show and it plays another, then I click another and it keeps playing the same one. I’m sure it’s a bug that can be squashed so I’ll keep trying. Once sorted, I’d up this to 5 stars.

Download?

I think the listen later function only works through streaming. That’s fine if you’re listening at home, but uses a lot of mobile data if you want to listen out on a walk etc. Is there any chance of making it downloadable? (I’d listen live on a walk except the show I most want to listen to airs while I’m at work.)

Chromecast Audio Support

Doesn't seem to be any? I was really looking forward to playing Scala Radio though my stereo system using Chromecast but am disappointed it's not there. Lots of other internet radio apps support Chromecast Or is it? If not please add.

Good app as it also gives choice of other stations. Would have been 4 stars if Chromecast had been supported.

Re. Various comments about buying a DAB radio instead. I have one however despite comments in the app about Scala Radio being available nationwide on DAB..it isn't ..the multiplex is not transmitted on lower power relay stations.
