Snail connect
Can’t log on using lan IP forcing “quick connect” instead. This defaults to connect using the relay system at kb/s uploads which means I can’t upload my photos! Needs a lan connection option when logging through quick connect

A little rough around the edges, but great for backing up photos to my NAS and showing them on my iPad without Apple strong-arming me to put them in the cloud. Previously I was pulling my hair out trying to find a way to put my photos on my iPad from some other storage device.

Can’t save photos anymore
Used to automatically save my photos on my NAS every time I was connected to a WiFi network. This was perfect and doesn’t work anymore :(

Nie jest to ideał ale na potrzeby 1 osoby lub kilku w domu przy słabym nas wystarcza. Wykonuję automatyczne backup zdjęć lecz nie usuwa on ich sam to powinni ulepszyć. Aplikacja w tym samym kraju daje szybko odpowiedź od serwera nas, co innego jeśli jesteśmy za granicą działa to wolno. (Ten sam kraj nad 3S czekania, inny kraj odległość 1500km 8-10s czekania za długo) Nie polecam innych nas ponieważ wsparcie jest nie kontynuowane tylko sprzedać produkt i sam sobie radź, wolę synology oni są od lat i będą na rynku. Cena synology wyższa ale lepszą i wsparcie jest cały czas produktów. Sprzęt nie psuje się latami więc zakup bardzo polecam.

Folder
The app is good for sync/ backup all the photos, but I would like to have the option of keeping the folders as well ( for example the favorite folder from iPhone photos to sync to a favorite folder in Synology photos). I hope this will be sorted in the future.

Good but..
I do like the app. It does backup when triggered.
It doesn’t seem to want to continue to backup in the background.
Also when I attempt to delete photons on my phone via the “Free up Space” option it errors with “PHPhotosErrorDomain error 3301”.
All in all a nice app but has some issues.

Duplicates
Its been over a year I have downloaded this app and no fix has ever came for photos that are being uploaded multiple times on my Cloud. Each time I go to backup my photos, it looks for older photos and videos and start to back them up too. I now have each photos and videos backed up twice. Why has this not been fixed yet?

Nice app, but please improve the slideshow
This is a pretty good app for accessing photos on my nas, but PLEASE add more options for the slide show. Random playback, loop option so that a slideshow never ends and the ability to change the duration each photo is displayed are 3 things I would love to see on here so I can use it as a photo frame as well as view my photos.

Very slow
Even on very fast WiFi everything is very slow. Google photos way faster to sync huge libraries. I have over 30k items and it takes ages to figure out changes

I’m sure it’s wonderful, BUT…
It’s taken me “since the app first came out” to notice the “folders view” button that is tagged on with the year/month/day buttons on the timeline view.
Because I was unable to find that button the app has been useless to me for years, which has had a crippling effect on the photo organising, editing and selling I wanted to do. The “Albums” tab does not provide the functionality I need and the timeline view is completely impractical for my needs. So with no button to switch to the folder view like I can on the desktop I ceased to be able to use the app or organise my photos. Since I struggle mentally with becoming overwhelmed, you can imagine the knock on effect of not being able to organise when away from my desktop like I used to in DS Photo.
I am really upset that you would issue an app with such ill-thought-out navigation. It’s not intuitive. There should have been a “Folders view” option behind the 3 dots as well. I’m sure that beside the year/month/day is really handy, but it’s not logical, so it should’ve been a different colour text or had a dark oval background.
Looking online, I am not the only one who has struggled with this app, and this may well be why. I’ve hardly touched my Disk Station since upgrading to 7.2 because of the combination of my mental health and this oversight - what a waste of several years.

Photo backup broken
I’d been hoping for an update but no luck. Photo backup has been broken for weeks. I’ve both a DS923 and a DS420j, neither lets me backup my phones anymore. I’ve tried this from 2x iPhones, same issue. Just sits at processing. Now going to have look at alternatives :(
I’ve tried the beta mentioned in a developer response, still doesn’t work. Even photo only mode/full/new only. Everything just hangs and it doesn’t send the files.

Synology failed
This is the worst app developed by Synology. DS Photo was much simpler and it used to work. Photos mobile app is unstable, slow uploads and always confused me where the heck photos are. Recently app says nothing to backup when it has so many photos which are not backed up. Manual upload fails with tons of errors. Come on Synology team you can do much better job, have been using products for decades but this app has let me down

Awful and unnecessary update
If I could give 0 stars I would. The most recent update is a major issue when it comes to deleting photos in the app. Someone at Synology has decided that the app should have control over photo deletions. If you delete from the app, it will delete from your phone. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be removed far away from the app development. This app should not be allowed to have this much power. If I want to delete it from my phone, I will do that myself. If I want to delete it just from the app I should have that power of decision - NOT Synology. This update needs to be reverted. I don’t want screenshots backed up but I still want them on my phone. You now have to either have them in the app or not anywhere if you don’t want them in the app. Synology: if you’re reading this, please revert this serious and unwarranted change that no user wants. EDIT —————— The app now turns off photo backup automatically if you force close it. When you go back in you have to turn it back on and it defaults to new photos only and doesn’t find any since the last backup completion. If you select resume, it will go through your entire camera roll again looking for any changed or new pics. I'm deleting this app as it no longer serves a functional purpose!

If you don’t open this app for like a week and then open it, it has issues backing up your photos. It tells you there is nothing to backup (reader, I had 700 photos that needed to be backed up). If you turn off backup and turn it back on it still doesn’t recognise there are photos still to be backed up and will only offer to backup “new photos from now”.
If you want those others backed up you have to manually select them. If you have a lot to backup, I’d just give up with this app!
They made a great app really bad with recent changes!

Can’t automatically backup iCloud Photos
The app has a bug that renders it useless. When you try to backup all your iCloud Photos (the reason I got a synology disk station) the app will after a short while stop with the error “Backup suspended, insufficient space”.
My phone has over 60GB free, and my synology has 8TB free.
Looking at other reviews (sort by most recent) and you can see many others with this issue. The developer’s response is to encourage them to download a beta version of v2.1 via TestFlight. This beta version has been around for four months! This bug should have been fixed months ago.
I do not recommend this app.

Every 30 min or so says not enough space
I’m trying to back up my iPhotos library but every 30 minutes it says out of space and I have to press retry manually. I have a 256gb iPad mini and over 100gb free, what gives? Can it not auto retry as manually pressing makes it carry on…

Avoid this is u can
This is possibly one of the least user friendly apps I have on my phone, if you encounter a problem- good luck buddy your getting absolutely no help from any of the resources provided. The amount of trial and error I have had to do to work out how to fix any issue I have found…it’s not for the weak. Additionally ITS SO SLOW. The current problem I have is that my photos aren’t backing up from oldest to newest they’re doing newest to oldest and nothing I do seems to change that. I have anxiety attacks thinking about this app. My phone literally has to break down from lack of storage before I resort to backing up my photos using this app.

Broken after update
something has changed in the way that backups work. It used to automatically download photos from my iCloud Photos library to back them up, now it just sits there until I manually download a photo from iCloud (by opening it in iPadOS photos app). Completely ruined the app for me. I don’t know what to do now. Why change such a brilliant feature?

Backup Stopped - insufficient space
My phone has 70% free disk space and my diskstation has multiple terabytes left.
However the photo backup constantly fails with the error “Backup Stopped. Insufficient space.”
It’s just building up over the months. I now have nearly 3000 photos and videos to backup.
Makes this app pointless! The internet is full of people with the same issue.
I even put the phone into Focused backup mode. It works for a while then dies. If you click retry it carries on for a bit!
Come on synology. There isn’t even an auto retry!

Totally ruined after a recent update :(
In the recent update, the app developers have transitioned this application into a 'file-sync' tool rather than a photo backup app. Let me clarify: Previously, miscellaneous images, such as screenshots and saved images, could be backed up to the NAS, and users had the option to delete them within the Photos Backup app, ensuring clean backups. However, with the latest update, developers now force deletions made in the Photos Backup app to also reflect in the local iPhone photos app. This means you either delete all screenshots from both your iPhone and Photo backup app or retain them in both locations. This seems impractical, especially considering the time users spent maintaining clean photo backups on the NAS, now disrupted by the inclusion of screenshots. Furthermore, there's the frustration that you can't delete anything without removing it from both places. If the aim was to enhance the app, focusing on features like text recognition, improved facial and object recognition, and the ability to select by content type would have been more beneficial. There are numerous features the app lacks, so choosing one that adds annoyance and transforms the app into something it shouldn't be is perplexing.

Good App but one big issue so far..
This works well as a baackup solution for the iOS camera roll (recent photos) to the synology NAS but with one huge drawback. If you are backing up in HEIC format the Geo Location from the original on the phone appears to be erased from the backup on the NAS. I really do not want to lose the location information in the backup and I cannot find any option to change this. Hopefully Synology will see this is a bug and fix it in a future release.

Photo Backup broken
The latest version has caused an awful problem whereby if I delete photos off my NAS drive it tries to re-backup/upload again from the phone. I’ve tried delete and re-installing the app and still presents the same problem. Various Screenshots and random photos I take end up on the nas drive and won’t let me delete ONLY from the nas drive. I have to delete from both both. I’ve even tried going into it via the laptop and delete from nas drive but then it uploads it again if I open the app! I want to pick and choose what to keep on the nas drive. My phone tends to have more photos.

The latest update has decided to upload the entire gallery again! I spent months sorting it out deleting junk off the NAS for this stupid app to load them all back on again! It still has 400 to do and I can’t see a way to stop it but allow uploading of new photos!

Slowly getting there
With the addition to sync photos regardless if they’re backed up or not, deleting a photo on the phone and NAS at the same time, and support for re-uploading a recently modified photo is perfect. I can slowly vision using this app as my main photos app soon - finally!

Totally awful so far
I can never understand why app developers insist on replacing a perfectly usable and stable app with one that so much better it no longer does what the previous one did, and if it does it takes twice as long to do it always supposing you can work out how to do what you want. DS Photo backed up my photos simply, easily and quickly. This app doesn’t seem to be able to do that. So having “upgraded” my NAS to DSM 7, in order to use Synology Photos, my NAS has all sorts of problems with speed and response now. Synology haven’t just dropped the ball, they’ve kicked so far into touch that we may never find it again.

Constantly Stops
Trying to do an initial sync of my photos (from iCloud), the problem is, it just seems to stop for no reason. I have to stop the app (clear from memory) and start the app again and start the sync again (until it stops again).

A waste of time
Tried again and again. This app always stopped at the middle of the back up process after half of my photos (around 1.2K) were copied. No way to reactivate it. If you disable and then re-enable it, it will try to loop through all photos again. Even worse than an vanilla rsync cmd.

Even on Wi-Fi 6 at 600-700mbit connection (tested with iPerf) the backup is just way too slow. Painfully slow.

Great app, some more functionality would be nice
I’m new to Synology and so far I’m finding it to be a great piece of kit. I primarily purchased it for photo backup for my family’s photos from our phones. I don’t want to have to pay a monthly fee to store my photos. I think Synology could take advantage of people like myself, that are now at the point of running out of free storage with Apple/ Google. However, there is much improvement needed to compete. Features like editing and better sharing functionality between family members would be better. Please keep developing these apps 🙂

A good app SO FAR
It's helpful to collect my photos together. I DO EXPECT this kind of function on a nas that costs a fortune but think that a lot more effort needs to be invested in the software/features available to synology users to represent the prices they charge for their hardware and to make them more useful. Obviously this would lead to more units sold so it's definitely a good move for synology to take this advice.
Negatives:
Quite slow at uploading, even with the sleep time upload function. Compared to apple it's in snail mode!
No .webp format support
Can't favourite images
Can't hide images or albums
Doesn't treat two images of the same shot as the same, for example when you shoot in raw and jpeg. Apps like lightroom can do this and it would be a welcome addition here, especially for photographers because it reduces the appearance of (false) duplicates within your library.
I'll add more issues as i discover them so hopefully the developers can add these features/fix problems.

Bug in iOS16
All camera upload photos of my several iPhones backuped to the same “iPhone” folder, not the folders of the name of the individual iPhone before iOS upgrade. Unless I choose Customised Folder with the lose of a sorting of year and month by folders.

Doesn’t work
Set up a new volume and a new user on the disk-station, everything was good. Downloaded the app set both myself and new user up, tested the app and it worked fine. Now, I’m away from the same network and it’s not uploading anything, it’s just sat at pending upload and there is no info about why it’s not working. Will just go back to zone drive

HEIC/JPEG backup
I have to use this app because of the NAS/Synology set up we use; but it is so frustrating that photos back up as HEIC files & not jpegs - I have to manually convert them after backing up in order to make them usable on any other platform at all. This takes an incredibly long time when dealing with volumes of photos & is incredibly frustrating. I have raised the issue repeatedly but the developers clearly don’t understand the problem from the user’s point-of-view; they simply say that HEIC picture quality is better - but it isn’t if the file is unusable.
It was possible in the old DSPhoto app, surely it is possible in this new version? Please, please, please give us an option to back up from an iPhone to the NAS in a jpeg format!

Awful, simply awful
The more I try and use it the worse it gets. My pc has photos in sub folders within the main folder, these are uploaded to the iPad using iTunes, then use this app to back them up to the synology drive, all it backs up are the top folders and any photos found in that folder, it doesn’t create a folder structure (I could live with that) and it ignores any photos that are, theoretically, in sub folders…

Missing Geo-Location and basic photo editing
Please add geo location support!! Guys this is a must have. And at least basic phot editing like cropping etc. As new features are added, it cannot sacrifice speed. It has to remain fast and responsive, no matter how many photos and videos are added.

Performance
Not sure what Synology were thinking when this app was developed but the performance of this app is really something they need to work on. I’m seriously thinking of downgrading my Synology NAS aback to 6.X so that I can use my DS Photos app instead. At least that worked well.

This app needs someone to finish it. Has big issues uploading multiple photo: uploading from ‘Apple Photo’. You get PLEASE UPLOAD AGAIN (unknown error). + it’s impossible to upload for the app itself. Does not dive into you photos.

Quick and Simple
I don’t get why this app has such bad reviews. There are still some thing to polish, e.g. match the folder structure when shifting from Moments, but overall the app runs very smoothly and the design is simple and nice. It handles thousands of pictures very quickly. Videos are loaded much better than Moments. The map feature is awesome, and to shift from day, month and year zooming with the fingers is also very nice.
One thing I miss is to have the total number of photos and videos in your space like in iCloud.
Please keep adding more features and giving support, it will soon become the natural replacement of iCloud or Google Photos.

ds photo from 10 years ago has more features
I had to downgrade my synology from 7.x to 6.x after realising how little control I have compared to the old app for managing photos. I like the map view on ds photo and every third party app has it.
Did synology wanted to rush the app and left this out?
Do synology care about user feedback at all or just doing their own thing?

Brilliant
This new update FINALLY sorted out the bugs and issues with the app so that it’s actually usable. Sleep time backup is a great idea to work around apple restrictions

Missing crucial basic features
This app needs the ability to at least crop a photo. The next best thing to do would be to get the app to sync rather than just backup.
How are synology expecting people to just use it as a ‘backup’ but to then give the ability to do all the rich things the web interface or app does like created albums and sharing if they are just ‘backups’ very disjointed. You need to sort this out like everyone forums and feedback have been saying. Other apps can do it. Otherwise you will miss the boat

Still some progress to be make but all round a solid photo app from Synology for easily backing up your photos and accessing your library.

Inflexible and poorly designed
The point of a NAS is to let you backup and store your data. A photo viewer for a nas should just let you view whatever data you have stored in whatever folders you have. Forcing me to move my photos into a specific folder for your app to work is utterly useless.

Slow, backup doesn’t progress
The new Synology photos app seemed like a good alternative to iCloud. I haven’t been able to tell yet as it’s taken about 12 hours to back up maybe 40 photos over my home wifi. If it’s finished by 2022, I’ll update my review.
