Stopped working over a year ago

This app was at one time the best puzzle app available, but it stopped working for me over a year ago (just randomly froze up), whenever I go onto the app it doesn’t even look as if the puzzles have updated since then. It’s a shame as it was a great app.

Almost great - lack of magic keyboard suport is a constant pain

I love *almost* every aspect of this app, but the lack of support for the magic keyboard on the iPad is really painful. The aswesome physical keyboard is right there (I keep reaching for it) and pressing keys on the screen feels so clunky instead. Plea to the developer: please could you fix this? This would be a 2->5 star immediate improvement in my eyes (and I will re-review!)

How much?!

Don’t understand the price point at all. Pay less than half this for iOS subscription to the actual news app, which includes the main crosswords. NYT does the lot for a fraction of the cost. There’s just no justification for what’s being charged here at all.

Works reliably - but no support for iPad physical keyboards

Unlike others here, I have found that progress on puzzles is retained between sessions, and does get synced between different devices.

One niggle is that the iPad says that my trial sub is expiring, but the iPhone says I am subscribed - same iTunes/Apple account.

But the main irritation is that it ignores keystrokes on my Apple iPad keyboard, which is much easier to type on than the virtual keyboard in the app.

I won’t be staying long

I restarted my subscription after getting into sudoku (the crossword part of the app isn’t worth having as it is more limited than the online version). Only one day in the app has lost all of my data from a partially completed puzzle.

It is limited in that there is no undo button to backtrack and unless you have a phenomenal memory this makes unpicking a wrong decision very cumbersome.

I would like to see an option to have some colour coding of pencilled in numbers. On the pdf version from the daily I can use my Apple Pencil to do this eg marking confirmed paired cells with a different colour.

Most irritating besides the data loss today is the lack of any indicator to show which puzzles are in progress but incomplete in the landing page. If they can be marked complete this should not be difficult to achieve.

Disappointing to see that the low ratings are still there given the fairly hefty annual fee.

Startup glitchy but is good fun

For those with the freezing on startup issue, the latest puzzles are probably loading in the background with no feedback to you that this is happening. Wait a minute or two for the latest puzzles to download. You’ll only need to do this once. (When you first download the app you’ll see the puzzles are from 2022, wait a while for them to refresh). It’s a shame because a simple “please wait” message would save a lot of headache here.

Once the app is updated it works well. Happy subscriber.

Just paid for a subscription but the app freezes when opening. Previously used under a trial and it mostly worked well. Looking at recent reviews this seems to be a common problem and no acknowledgement by the developer. Will be trying to get a refund 🤞🏻

I've had this for a while but recently it loses all my input if I shut down even briefly. I have tried giving feedback with no response. I notice there is no response from the developer here either.

Good if you like doing old crosswords.

I keep finding latest crossword available is from the last day I used the app. There is no refresh or ‘fetch new’ button. After days, more crosswords will suddenly appear. Also, start puzzle on iPad in morning, resume on iPhone later but my answers aren’t there. Definitely NOT worth the money.

Only okay

There’s no undo button (frustrating if you want to keep your annotations but make a mistake on a sudoku) and the keyboard is frustrating because it’s smaller than the iPad one and harder to type on.

It’s also annoying to be asked to set up and pay a fairly hefty subscription to use the app, just to do the same crosswords and puzzles that you can play for free on the guardian website.

Apart from that the app is okay - it works but it’s definitely not worth paying to use beyond the free trial.

Fabulous!

I use this app daily, and love the slick clean interface. I have never had any of the app issues that others have reported here.

I’ve been using the app about 2 years. It is daily updated to include the days puzzles and is super easy to use.

I would like the following features added:

- personal records (fastest solve for a particular puzzle type)

- ability to highlight multiple cells in sudoku

- in-app calculator or combinations possible for the killer sudoku (I’m not good enough at mental maths for that…)

These would be serious cherries on a delicious cake.

Just downloaded and every time I open the app it freezes. As a regular buyer of the Guardian newspaper I am really disappointed, particularly as reading the reviews it’s not a new problem and nothing seems to being done about it!

Now to delete the app.

Doesn't work at all

Opened the app for the first time on my iPad, saw the available crossword puzzles (all of which were from early 2022 - it's currently July 2023) but nothing worked. Wherever I tapped, nothing happened. Force quit it and opened again. Some of the puzzles were now recent but, again, tapping anywhere did nothing. Back to the website for me.

Apple ID Issue

I have just changed my iPad and discover that this app now defaults to my other Apple ID (not the one used for App Store), so it is impossible to log in to my subscription. Surely this is not difficult to remedy?

Sharing with friends doesn’t always work

I have just finished the free trial. I would happily pay the subscription via the app store. I do not, however, want yet another online account just to do a crossword. Did not subscribe and deleted the app.

Frustrating waste of money

The app stopped working, nothing about it in the faqs, no response from customer services. I’ve wasted money on an app I can’t use. A very disappointing experience. I can’t afford losing most of a years subscription. I’ve paid a subscription for a service I can’t use, I feel cheated.

Frustrating bugs

I love the app when it works. I have just unsubscribed yet again because the app has frozen. I can’t even resubscribe via the app. I have tried turning my iPhone on and off again (several times) and have deleted and reinstalled the app, several times.

I tried cancelling my subscription and resubscribing after deleting the app.

If I am doing something stupid, somebody please tell me. Meanwhile I will grow steadily more miserable because I am missing my Killer Sudoku.

Have had the app for a while and mostly been good. However it has started to repeatedly delete my data half way through completing puzzles. Have deleted app and tried to re download but is now frozen completely and won’t let me back in!

It’s ok

The app is ok, but it’s a shame that the puzzle answers inputted don’t copy on the newspaper version and visa versa, so if you log in to the other platform to carry on you have input all the answers you’ve already found.

Dark mode please

On the whole, it does what it says on the tin, and it’s reasonably priced. Use it primarily for crosswords and only UX complaint is the slow keyboard, as others have said.

Mainly reviewing to say it’d be great to have a dark mode, the all-white layout is very bright at night.

Terrible keyboard

Uninstalled after less than a minute. The keyboard is too low down on the newer Face ID iPhones, which is inconsistent with the rest of the OS and uncomfortable to use.

Given that the first of these devices came out nearly 5 years ago, it really goes to show how much they care about this app. A cheek to charge money for a product that you aren’t reliably supporting.

Disappointing overall

Started the free trial to share cryptic crosswords with a poorly family member but disappointed to find that element doesn’t work. Sending the link to share only sends a link to download the app, which we’ve already done!

The crossword puzzles themselves are very good, with a variety of setters and difficulty. I’m finding the screen display rather small on my iPad and not as easy to use as the Guardian online, which is also much cheaper. It would be nice to do sudoku without ads but really not worth paying for this app.

Downloaded the app and immediately got a screen saying “your free trial has ended”. How, when I only just downloaded it?!

The button saying “subscribe” didn’t work so I couldn’t even find out what it costs (in a supposedly free app)

Subscription won’t work

Loved this app til I re subscribed this year and it won’t acknowledge it, have updated iOS, deleted and reinstalled app and I can’t get it to recognise my paid subscription, customer service have replied to emails but have been unable to provide any constructive feedback or resolution. I have completely wasted my money resubscribing this year, have left it for a few months and have retried again now but no success at all. Very disappointing.

Had to reset my iPhone and tried to log into the app with my subscription once it was restored…doesn’t recognise me at all. Have tried resetting the password but this just resets my guardian.co.uk password. Been waiting since 14 October for someone in the dev team to come back to me, pretty fed up at this point

Very misleading

I subscribe to the Guardian & so I followed a link which took me to this page. It is misleading and only then did I get a message saying that I had had x days free subscription and the the cost would kick in. Right now I feel like cancelling my Guardian as I find this very sneaky.

Mostly good, lacks features

Enjoying having puzzles in an app rather than needing to wade through the website - easier to have a quick break.

A couple of niggles -

- No anagram helper. This is the big one and would help improve the experience to match the website. Defeats the object of being on an app if I need a pen and paper to fiddle with anagrams. This is the thing that might make me give up on the app.

- No option to clear a word. Minor issue but would be nice.

- Related but not a part of the review of the app. Had issue getting my devices to sync/recognise the account. Sent a help request by email and never got a reply - disappointing.

Great on iPhone, terrible on iPad Pro

We love doing the crosswords together, and recently purchased an iPad Pro, along with the Magic keyboard folio.

I was very disappointed to find that typing on the magic keyboard did not work whatsoever in the app, meaning you have to use the app’s onscreen keyboard, that is bizarrely spaced, and not intuitive to use (as well as being awkward to use when the iPad is attached to the Magic keyboard.

Killer sudoku impossible to see

Hi, the puzzles are great and there’s tons of them. A big back catalogue you can work your way through too.

But two huge issues.

1. Killer sudoku- the pencilled-in numbers are literally about 3 pixels tall. It’s impossible to do a killer sudoku without the tiny numbers but they are so hard to read. Please make it bigger.

2. A dark mode would be great. This app is blinding at night but I still want to play it 🥺

Massive fan of the Guardian and Observer crosswords so this app is heaven. Love how far back they go….

One minor niggle….please, please introduce a general setting to choose to not have a timer. It starts with every new puzzle and for someone who pops in and out of the puzzles when I have a spare moment, it’s a bit of a wind up….

Excellent- but could be improved even further

It’s my daily fix over breakfast. Downloaded in October and since done all puzzles back to beginning of September.

But....would be good to see more performance stats; for example:

- what’s my average time to complete each level of sudoku?

- what’s my personal record to complete a given level of sudoku (I keep a written record, but this is 2021 isn’t it?!)

- what’s my average and record total time to complete all 5 sudokus on a given day?

- and what are the record times across all individual sudokus across all users? (Could be anonymised)

Great if it works. Appalling lack of aftercare by Guardian

The app is great when it works. Great range of puzzles and a extensive back catalogue to keep you busy through lockdowns. But, after months of happy use, the app started telling me I wasn’t subscribed. The most frustrating part of this was the useless response - mostly no response at all - from the Guardian customer service. So unhelpful and disappointing.

Don’t bother, website is better

As others have mentioned, there are some features in the website that are missing from the app. However the biggest thing for me is that the magic keyboard for the ipad doesn’t work (where as it does on the web) - typing on the touchscreen instead is clunky. Cancelling my subscription until it’s improved!

Loved the app until it stopped working

I have a subscription through the App Store but the app doesn’t recognize that and only lets me play the free games.

I tried to contact the developer, they pointed me to the App Store.

After an hour chatting to the App Store help team it was suggested I update my iOS. Took me another hour or so to do that, I redownloaded the app, it still doesn’t see my subscription.

That’s a lot of time to spend trying to get a puzzle game to work.

Let me know if there is an actual fix to this problem and I’ll change this to 5 stars because it is a 5 star app when available for use.

Love the new iPad landscape feature

Thank you for introducing landscape mode for iPad.

As a future update is it possible you can you can enable user preferences in settings to be saved so that they don’t go back to the default settings every time you reopen a puzzle?

Finally, in today’s cryptic the iPad keyboard appears over the top of the puzzle rather the app’s own keyboard at the bottom of the screen as with earlier puzzles which which was much better.

Use daily

I’m happy to see landscape on my iPad. It wasn’t a deal-breaker, but very welcome. Most evenings I do the quick crossword together with my daughter who’s living in a different country. She uses The Guardian website as we didn’t seem able to collaborate via our apps. The blurb says we should be able to, but the magic doesn’t happen and there are no full instructions. I’m assuming this would be like WordFeud but maybe I’m too optimistic. Anyway it’s a great app, I’m happy to support The Guardian and I use it daily.

Great puzzle app, Very easy to use and helps me gain experience in doing cryptic crosswords...as I can start off with the everyman and quiptic archive. One small change would be great though, if I fill the everyman grid in, can I mark it as complete....as the crosswords with available answers automatically get marked as complete, but there is no way to mark Everyman complete..thanks

Accessabilty improvements

As a visually impared person it would be nice to have more accesabilty to the app. I use voiceover a number of the buttons are labeled image, when navigating the grid it would be nice to be able to scroll up and down as well as left to right, instead of just saying the number of letters in a clue it would be useful to say letters are already in the clue eg v blank c 3 blanks. The 4down app is a good example of what can be done.

Frustrating and disappointing product

I downloaded and set up a subscription for this app in May 2020. I have two Apple ID’s like a lot of other people according to Apple, with one for my calendars, email etc ( primary ID )and one for itunes, movies etc. I was able to originally choose which ID to use for this apps subscription via the App log in page and used the iTunes one. However about a month into the subscription I updated the app only to find this no longer worked and I was told by the Guardian support page that I if I wanted to use the Subscription I would need to to change the Apple ID in my IOS Settings. This seemed very cumbersome. The support has been totally useless and I feel I have wasted a years subscription. I feel very let down and would not recommend this app for those who have more than one ID.

It’s a pity the Guardian doesn’t say in the advertising or anywhere in the detail that this is an expensive app. You hav to investigate what the In App purchases are to find out its a subscription app. In app purchases to me means you can purchase extras when in the app. If it was a third of the price it would be worth buying. Dissapointing.

Infinite sudoku and convenient access to the Everyman

As a long time sudokuer and budding cryptic solver this is a great little app. A really nice way to have the Everyman puzzles in your pocket to chip away at. The Everyman is difficult enough to be a challenge without being so difficult I can’t solve any clues!

Also big thanks to the developers. An earlier version of this app kept forgetting hard solved sudoku pencil marks between sessions. Glad to report that this has now been fixed.

Great for crosswords & soduku

App works really well, I’d say particularly for soduku. Guardian crosswords are fantastic so it’s good to have an app for them and I’m happy to pay as I’d like them to continue. I find the timer annoying but you can hide that now.

Good app for sudokus but expensive

This is a really good sudoku app (I don’t do the crosswords) but it doesn’t work in landscape (mildly frustrating) - the main problem though is the cost. At £3.49 per month it costs close to 40 quid annually which, in my view, is a lot to pay for sudokus. So I’ve had to cancel it, unfortunately, as I am still looking for an app I prefer. If sudokus were included in the newspaper subscription it would be more cost effective, but that’s not the case...

Good app

Bought a year’s subscription so I could do the cryptic crossword with a friend. Didn’t work well at first and hard to do collaboratively but after the app updated it worked fine. Shame that can’t do prize crosswords collaboratively but the app is great.

Too many typos

Generally a good app but there are a good few errors in clueing and often the ‘correct’ answer is a miss-spelled word, e.g. scoPland yard instead of scotland yard. Or clued as (9,3) and the answer is ‘pay attention’ which is (3, 9). There are lots of others where a 3 or 4 word answer is indicated as (11) or (12) which should indicate one word.

Enjoying it but couple of issues

I really enjoy doing the Guardian crosswords and Sudoku so was pleased when the app was released. I’m liking the app but a couple of issues:

1. No landscape mode: mainly an issue with the iPad where I usually use it in landscape with my keyboard case. Until that’s fixed I don’t see any reason for using this app instead of the Guardian news app.

Good puzzles but partially unresponsive!

I was enjoying this app, there is a great selection and quantity of puzzles! However, since updating my system to 13.5.1 the app has been somewhat unresponsive. Sometimes selecting options (e.g. letters, menu options) requires you to click more than once to get it to register the action.

Clunky, expensive, and not included in sub/membership

The app itself is clunky. There’s a real lack of touch (haptic) or sound feedback the let you u defat and your touch, I’ve never entered so many typos / misentered so much text.

But £3.50 a month on top of my iOS app £12 every five minutes and a membership that I don’t know what I get from is too much.

Best puzzles. Small tweaks needed to app.

Leaving five stars because I like the Guardian, want to support it, and the quick crosswords and sudoku are really great.

But the app itself has a few bugs that really need fixing and other tweaks:

1) If you click about, there’s no way to get back to the main screen on iOS without hard closing the app and reopening.

2) the text input on the crossword is dodgy. If you press a key twice quickly, it registers on the keyboard, but doesn’t come up in the app. This is really annoying! I constantly struggle to type in words and input text

3) quite often if I leave the app for a bit it will lose all my Sudoku annotations. The crossword sometimes also deletes all my progress. Also quite annoying!

In terms of tweak: Is it possible to also just add all the features to the crossword that exist online. E.g clear word. And the yellow and purple color scheme is a bit jarring, the online one is much nicer (and virtually perfect).

Other kinds of puzzles would also be really great.

Significantly worse than the online

The Guardian has an excellent online crossword page. The check and cheat are easy to use, not hidden behind another menu and they have a useful anagram helper feature. In comparison this app is really poor. The drop down menu is clumsy. There is no anagram feature, after you complete a clue it automatically spits you into the next one instead of letting you look at the answer and clue together. I don’t know why you would not base your app on a good online experience that you have already created and instead make something that is significantly worse. What a disappointment.

Best crossword app I’ve found

I used to use Crosswords, which is fine, but it lost its linkage to the free crosswords from the Independent, and I stopped my Telegraph subscription. I only need cryptic crosswords. So it’s great that I found the Guardian, which has endless cryptic crosswords of differing levels, and Sudoku as a bonus. The price is fine for a full year, and I’m happy to support the Guardian.

Two minor bugs - the screen doesn’t rotate to landscape on my iPad Pro 12.9” (2018), and it always forgets one of my settings (skipping letters that are already filled in).

But this is all that any cryptic crossword lover could want, in my opinion.

I’ve been moaning about the lack of attention to the puzzles in Guardian Daily ever since it came out. This app puts it all right and provides neat functionality with a pleasing aesthetic.

I love this!

A commuter’s gift. Very smart, very neat. Also great with coffee. And if you’ve always been certain that you’re better / quicker at crosswords than a clever friend... now you can prove it. I have. It has a timer!
