Smartist is now just expensive ChatGPT

I used to be a big fan of Smartist. However, recently it seems that the majority of their new interiors are AI-generated. I have no problem with AI-generated images, but why use Smartist when we can create our own mockups with Dall-e and photoshop/ Canva for free? I used Smartist because they had an excellent library of customizable images and it was quick and easy to scale my artwork. I wish that they were doing something more innovative than selling us what we can easily create on ChatGPT ourselves.

Art not to scale in most settings

My 48 x 72 inch piece is not shown to scale in most settings. I have also seen other artists post on social media using the app with their art not to scale because it looks better, usually bigger. This seems to negate the whole point of the app.

Nice app. Missing finish variation

It’s a nice app and has some realistic rooms and treatments but I would love to see more variety in both frame style (decorative/ornate) and medium type (paper, torn edge, tapestry).

Brilliant and so easy to use

I hesitated to buy Smartist because my budget is so tight; as an emerging artist every Penny has to be considered. I signed up at the beginning of this year and have been really impressed with how easy it is to use - importing photos from my phone is super easy (I don’t know how it would work from desktop but presume the clever people at Smartist will have worked all this out. ) For me the investment in Smartist has been fantastic, especially for creating clean backgrounds and showing my textile art pieces “in situ” and to scale. Thank you Smartist - I love the features, the ease of use and the professional results.

Frustrating as a small business

I love the app and love the quality of the images I was able to create. I was using the app at the time when it was free and what a difference it made to my content and showcasing my work! Then, they introduced high fees and as a small business it’s frustrating. I’m already having to pay subscription fees for so many other things, and was so frustrated when this app turned to that. I’ve since stopped using as much and wish they could’ve found another way to monetise the app where it didn’t impact small businesses like me.

This update on 20/3/2024 is great. The app enables me to present circular shape artwork perfectly. The developers are truly in tune with their customers expectations and deliver enhancements when they say they will.

Ridiculously expensive for what it offers

The app is ok. It’s useful. The backgrounds are repetitive. Not everyone who buys art lives in a penthouse showroom.

But the worst thing is the cost. The subscription is more than Netflix. Just to put a frame round an image!!! It’s not far off the subscription for photoshop which is infinitely more useful.

I’d pay that price as a one off. But that amount every month is madness! It’s a one trick, super simple app and not worth anything close to this price. Shame they got greedy.

This is a great app. Unlike some others I’ve tried, you can really easy alter the size of your painting within the setting by touch screen. Very easy & intuitive and lots of room / interiors options. :)

Great interiors

This app is fabulous. Super simple to use and really high quality assets. A few more frame options would be good - whilst the interiors are second to none, and the app is certainly the best I’ve used, the limited framing options (no ornate frames) means this isn’t the only app I can rely on.

Also, I didn’t realise when i signed up that there’s a desktop app too. Great stuff 👌.

So useful for artists!

Smartist is a really useful tool for artists to use. It enables placement of work on a gallery wall or within a whole range of domestic interiors, to see how it will look in situ, both from an aesthetic point of view, and also to see - and show - scale in relation to objects in a room, which most documentation of artwork doesn’t demonstrate.

With my participation in an art fair coming up soon, Smartist will also be a really useful tool for helping prospective buyers to visualise my works in the home, which should help with sales.

I’ve tried a few of these types of apps and find Smartist to be one of the best and easiest to use.

Has its Limitations

Smartist assumes that all wall art is square or rectangular so if you want a mockup to show off a circular shaped piece of work i.e. Mandala, then Smartist cannot do this as it leaves a square / rectangular crop that will not match the wall that it is presented on. I initially thought this may have been a feature in the trial version, but was disappointed to discover that it is present on the subscription version also. Luckily, I only purchased a 1 month subscription. I will not be renewing until this issue is addressed as I do not believe there should be any limitation in terms of the shape of the piece that you wish to present.

This is an extraordinary app for artists and photographers alike. Wonderfully easy to use with a extensive range of design options available.

The feature of selecting different frames, frames sizes and mat sizes has transformed by life. The only change I’d suggest is the ability to look at art with a mat but without a frame. Once an option, this would be the best app out there.

Every artists should download this app

I’ve been using Smartist app for a while now and I find it so quick and easy to use. The interior shots are great and lots of options available to choose from. It means I can update my website with professional looking images of my work insitu and within minutes. No faffing about in photoshop, Smartist allows you to resize your work, change the colour of your frames, mounts, create multiples on a wall and export the final image to different sizes or directly to your social network all within the app. Every artist should download this app it’s a time saver for any artist.

A really great app for in situ images, loads of room sets, really realistic imagery, even any shadows falling across paintings are 100% believable, really small details that make all the difference. Love the option to change the wall colour on a lot of the room sets. Love the angled option. Love the exporting options to crop and size for social media. Love the importing of images where you can crop and sort out distorted images. Great to be able to save favourites too, and to see new and ‘coming soon’ roomsets. All good, 5 stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this app from the outset. Very intuitive and easy to use and I love the new selection of interiors.

I was excited to see the app was now available for Mac desktop, but alas it requires OS 12 and above and I’m gutted because my old mac can no longer be updated😢

Too expensive for what it is

I get the concept but very expensive, there are apps like print to size that are free, where you can get pictures of rooms from the web, and put your picture over it positioning on any wall, I’d be happy to pay £1.99 a month but not the price they are asking when there are alternative ways.

Completely in love with the Smartist app. Its very useful for artists to display their art in neutral interiors and switch up the backgrounds to see how the paintings would look under a specific wall colour. Fantastic app

Love this app! Great, easy, fast and effective way to display artwork professionally. Does justice to the artwork. Also a great way of visualising the artwork in any kind of space as there is a good variety of interiors with the option to view from different angles and a variety of coloured frames. There are new additions to contemporary interiors added every so often which is fantastic too. Customer service is exceptional. They have shared my work a and also follow up on feedback to see how they can improve the app. Highly recommend for artists!

Intuitive , with a quality look

I find it useful to pick the strongest images before framing . Would personally like more gallery views rather than room sets but that’s just me . Being able to use a less than perfect shot is a great help if you are in a rush

Amazing app for artists

I’m an interior design and I know how long it takes to create renders so it’s nice to go to one place and find lots of options and ease of use for displaying art. From a design perspective, some of the interiors could be better but there seems to be lots of options and always releasing new work. Play around with the wall colour, frame and mount which enables you to create something that looks high end and design led.

Really good

I’ve found this app to be super easy to use, with some really great results. Some tweaking is sometimes necessary to get your desired frame looking realistic and on the whole I have found the front-on setups more successful than the angled ones, but overall I think it’s great. I particularly like the tool when you are uploading photos that asks you to identify the corners of your work and it then straightens the image up for you.

So glad I discovered this app. I was looking for something like this to showcase my work on my Etsy store and Smartist has been a Godsend!!

It’s so easy to use and the backgrounds are amazing.

I love too how you can add different coloured frames and change the angle of the rooms. I can’t recommend it enough to others!

I love love love this app. It allows me to market my art in a much more professional manner. So easy to use. Just one thing I’d like some classical interiors as my work is classical in antique frames. A dark hallway, a room with antique french furniture etc.

Flawed

Quite a good app but flawed in one VERY important area - with artworks with white in them (a very popular colour) the white appears grey (mid grey, not light grey) in about half of the room interiors, which is extremely annoying. And, importantly, this issue cannot be rectified by trying to play around with the image’s colour attributes as, of course, trying to ‘whiten’ the whites messes up the colouration of the entire artwork.

Love this app - makes my life as an artist so much easier. I previously used to struggle with taking photographs of relatively large paintings especially ones that are 2 or 3 in a set / layout but with Smartist it’s pretty straightforward to translate onto the wall. Great interiors and absolutely user friendly. It’s one of my favourite apps.

Before the newest update everything was alright. Just today when I opened it and I saw that most of the before available rooms were made for PRO subscription... Like before this at least we had 5 or 6 rooms which we were able to use... Now is just everything beside 3 scenes... I mean the app and the work is great but then....

This app is fantastic! It really helps visualise what any picture/art would look like framed and on a wall. There are so many options for customisation different frames, different rooms, different angles and many more . Definitely recommend, well stoked with this app , its really helped me out. Its like having your own virtual gallery!

This app is fab for displaying your artwork for sale. The only problem is there are not enough free backgrounds to use. I have to go to a couple of other apps for more selection. Times are hard at the mo and having to pay for the full app is a big no no.

It is so easy to use and to flick around the different settings, being able to change wall colours and to zoom into the setting to show off the piece was so simple

Glitches with update

When I first downloaded Smartist all was well. But with an update all my artwork was gone and now is seems I cannot upload multiple images and have them saved to try different images in different interiors. I have to upload new artwork each time. Some of the frame/mat colours are limited, eg there is only one white mat then a while bunch of odd colours that I doubt anyone will ever use. Needs more subtle whites and greys. I find that I export them adjust in photoshop. The developers could take a short break from rendering rooms and spend some time on the frames.

Also I think the full size export needs to be higher resolution. It’s ok for phones but if you want to use it on a website it’s quite small.

It’s easier than searching stock sites for interiors and they are generally tasteful, though some of the new furniture is beginning to look a little odd!

Best rooms for art displays and good options for frames . Frame colours . Cropping is tricky . You need to crop your artwork before adding into their app until they make it simpler . They have been so excellently responsive to my suggestions . I use these apps for my works that sell internationally . It’s why I seem so into making it perfect . They are resolving the crop thing .

Really easy to use and navigate … settings are a great choice and frames to choose from. The only thing I wish it could do was measure when you take the photo ? Really great app with amazing potential to diversify into didn’t areas of the art world.

The app itself runs really well and the team behind it are very responsive and helpful.

Other apps offer similar services but none are quite as seamless as Smartist .

Best App for Artists

LOVING this app. As someone who is painting out of a studio apartment , I don’t have any space to take aesthetic photos of my paintings. Smartist has a really straight forward and easy app to upload your paintings into gorgeous rooms which you can easily download to your phone to post or send inspo to clients. 10/10.

I was about to purchase the full features of this app this morning when it was discounted but the price has now gone up by double the amount. Will have to have a look elsewhere

This app is fantastic

I stumbled across this app and I couldn’t be happier that I did - as an artist who is starting out, this gives me incredible content for my Instagram account by showing my work in gorgeous settings. It’s easy to use too!

Customer service and app beyond expectation

If you need an app to bring value to your artworks in an easy yet efficient way, go for it ! The paid version is totally worth it. It will help you sell your art and you won’t regret it. I know I don’t.

The customer service is amazing, reply fast and takes care of anything you need. They are the nicest, on top of that.

They fix the bugs super quickly and improve their app and add sceneries often.

Overall a great customer experience and I can’t live without it anymore ! Thank you Smartist ! 👍🏻

Great App!

This app makes it so easy to present your work quickly and easily and makes it look so pro. I only have a small workspace so struggle to take good photos unless I go outside and this has made things really easy :)

Great customer service and quality app

There are few good apps around for artists to easily upload their artwork in seconds to make it look professional enough to sell but this one is definitely one of, if not the best.

The option to view your artwork on an angle makes it stand out from other apps that don’t offer this, as it makes it look much more realistic! Their customer service is what I’ve been impressed with the most, as they’ve shared my work when using their room sets and regularly asked for feedback on how they can improve their app and update me with what changes they are making, which is such a personal service! They seem to be constantly improving for such a new app.
