Slow and lacks basic functionality

Like others, I really want to like this app and use it as my main calendar.
The reality is that it’s not ready for that. It’s very slow to load (sometimes I give up and revert to looking at the Apple calendar or another app). There are some basic functions lacking and I can’t even see a way to search for past/future events on the app (although maybe I’m just not seeing it).

OK, but needs better UI.

The privacy features and multiple reminders are nice, but the UI isn’t great, unfortunately. There are glitches when sliding across month and the app looks dated with a grid view, no Liquid Glass, no vertical scroll in month view, small font sizes.
When clicking on a date it would be much better to show the first event of the day rather than midnight.
I also prefer the intuitive event editor in Apple Calendar with clear grouping of event attributes, better date selector and 5-minute increments instead of every minute.

Moving in the right direction

2026 update - moving in the right direction. Still some way to go, as import from Apple calendar still a pain and full day and timed events look exactly the same.
Also less urgent but also needed is the ability to import local Outlook pst archives.
The Proton Bridge app seems ideal to span the intentional gap imposed by Apple to lock us all in.
I hope one day there will be a Proton Messenger so I can fully remove myself from the icy grip of Apple.
2025 July update - A big step forward with an iPad friendly version. Definitely moving in the right direction. An extra star for the improvement and another for the positive developer response. Thank you. Now need to import calendars into Proton, so I can remove them from Apple.
2025 June update - How can it be that over a year has passed and STILL there is no advances? Still can’t easily import Apple calendar or Outlook pst. Still no iPad app. Down to one star.
Real shame, as Proton is a great email.
Original review - Needs to at least compete with the basic Apple Calendar app; and that means a widget, an iPad version and offline use. When I looked at the ‘add calendar’ option, it didn’t show the calendars I already have set-up on my iPad. No way I am inputting nine years of calendar information by hand!
Compared to the other apps, Calendar seems to be an after thought.
I would like to get in to the Proton Ultimate system but this and the poor/lacking support for importing/exporting from/to Outlook pst archive in Proton Mail make it a non-starter. A sync add-on for Outlook would solve this but I doubt there will be the demand to make it worthwhile.

Boring

Very boring & basic looking calendar compared to another I use but that’s the price we pay for privacy. Choosing colour is a premium option. No customising options, calendar itself is very basic & on the smaller side. My main issue is you can only put one reminder notification. As someone with adhd I’d like to put a reminder the day before & day of.

Please add .ics app support

Love proton as a company and its products, but the iphone app really needs the functionality to support .ics files that are sent when booking hotels / travel.
I would like to be able to click the file and add to my calendar of choice.
Also, the cal iphone app runs very slow, unsure as to why this is?
Thank you proton team for your hard work, hope to see this requests addressed in the future !

Widget has disappeared

Just upgraded to the paid version of Proton calendar (and Mail) but over the weekend the widget has disappeared. I like a constant visual of upcoming events and without this, I don’t class it as a properly functioning calendar app. Please fix this asap.

Sooo slow

I want to like this app more than I do… but there are so many issues that make it hard to recommend… for example - scrolling day to day is so slow and cludgy, you have to scroll left/right then let it do its animation before it becomes responsive again. Scrolling e.g. 3 days forward is a chore. There is no offline saving of events. Often, in perfect WiFi, it just hangs, with a spinning circle leaving you unsure if your event has saved or not… unreliable is bad… and it is unreliable…

Getting there

The day after I cancelled my Unlimited subscription, you finally made this a real iPad app! Haha better late than never. Only one snag: it only works in portrait mode LOL. From a user experience, it's definitely headed in the right direction (pun intended). And support for widgets would be great too!

Needs Serious Work

This app requires some serious work before it can compete with the more capable free(!) mail apps. Only ⭐️⭐️ at this stage for the privacy however, this is what we, as users, have paid for right?
My humble top 3 suggestions would be:
- Ability to use calendar offline.
- Ability to create tasks vs events only.
- Ability to move events on the calendar with a hold and swipe vs opening up the event.
Moreover, instead of a simple acknowledgement of the reviews, a date for release of the promised improvements would be welcome.

No search feature makes this a poor product

I like what’s here; the view, privacy features, and adding and deleting items is fine. The issue is a digital calendar is useful mostly when looking up things in your own schedule. It cannot be uncommon to open your calendar and think to yourself “when did I book the dentist?”, “when is my next haircut?”, etc. the web version has a search feature, why doesn’t the app?

Missing ability to search

Looks promising and I keep fingers crossed for future development.
For now we’re missing searching (seems to be a design flow not allowing to add this simple feature for such a long time).
It’s also missing widget with incoming events, it could warn user this will reduce privacy but still allow user to add it if needed.
I cannot verify if and how shared calendars works as we cannot share even one of them not even with just one other person without switching to paid plan.
And here is another issue -> we are not keen to pay for app missing basic features like ability to search through added events or easily see incoming events as they are essential to organise things in our family and work.
Due to missing search it’s not usable for us (yet).
The calendar sharing should be available in free plan at least with limited number of calendars and persons to give users any ability to test it before starting/increasing yet another paid subscription commitment.
Thanks

Good, but missing features

In attempt to de-google my life, I am testing Proton due to their privacy-respecting policies, which I appreciate. For the calendar: it works, but I would love to see just a little more development on it to become a true replacement to Google Calendar, which I currently use. It would be great to have more settings to change preferences - like having the option to not grey out events that have already passed. I would also love to be able to “zoom out” on the “day” and other views, so the gap between each hour is smaller and you can see more events throughout the day, like you can on Google Calendar. Also please add the ability to duplicate events within the app! I would also appreciate the ability to choose between going into the day view or the agenda view when you click on a day in the month view. Also the ability to search is again limited to the web version only - please add this to the app!
Overall, it’s simple but it works. I would just love to see a few more features.

Basic, some issues

Simple calendar that mostly works. Doesn’t sync well without internet (they might be fixing this). The Windows browser version beats the default iPhone calendar. I’ve gotten used to it over time, but since it’s encrypted, saving events is slow. Hoping it gets better soon, especially since I’m leaving the Apple ecosystem. They’re working on new features though (check their forum).

So close to subscribing

I want to love Proton. It’s just silly things that make me not want to transfer from iCloud Mail and Calendar. A small widget is needed for the iPhone not just a medium and large one. Would’ve thought the small widget would’ve been prioritised considering it’s a phone screen? There’s somehow no iPad optimised version - how? Some views just don’t work with the iPhone screen - take a look at the ‘week’ view of your calendar.

On my Samsung phone, I get more colours to choose from like the colour of my phone and it’s not on your list of colours. Can you add more colours please? And on my calendar? I would’ve liked to have seen all of my calendars on that date so like if I’ve got two or three on my calendar on that date, why not show that instead of one item plus the number of what from that date.

Good Privacy, but no native iPad support

I am a subscriber to Proton and really love their apps, especially Proton Mail. I thought i would give Proton Calendar a try as I wanted a change from Apple Calendar. While I find the calendar app great on my iPhone, there is no iPad version which I really find disappointing in this day and age. I use an Apple Magic Keyboard so using the iPhone app on my landscape iPad is very difficult to use. Surely it can’t be that difficult to write an iPad version? Please do.

Great App hindered by lack of widget

I love Proton apps and as a long time follower have seen the tremendous efforts made by the team to release several great products.
The calendar, however, lacks a very useful feature: a widget.

🫤iPad version just iPhone scale

Love Proton privacy, longing to upgrade to full paid suite, but calendar is too small. I don't organising life on phone because mistakes too easy to make at that small scale, but unfortunately the iPad app is just the same as the iPhone app, in both scale and layout.

Key features still missing

This app has good potential but the pace of development is shockingly slow. I have been a customer for 3 years and the despite Proton’s promises the app still lacks basic calendar features after that time…
One basic feature that is lacking is having a shared calendar which allows two users (family members or colleagues) to both edit it in iOS. Sharing a calendar but not being able to edit someone’s calendar is pointless for family members… so why 3 years later hasn’t it been done yet despite promises?
Likewise the calendar cannot be used offline, which is essential in many places where there is no Wi-Fi or phone signal - such as in large/old buildings, in rural areas, on the underground or when flying (this offline problem also applies to the Mail app).
Without these basic features it isn’t usable. I still use the Apple calendar for everything. The pace of development needs to improve to incorporate these features or customers will leave

Time zones are broken

The app auto detects your time zone, however it always gets it wrong. This is an issue that has persisted for years and yet the developers refuse to let us pick our own time zone. Working in the wrong time is a deal breaker for me (surely for obvious reasons) and I won’t be using this app unless that functionality is given.
The rest of the app works well, but I refuse to work with it when it won’t even let me use the correct time (ie, half the point of the app)

One small problem keeping this app from being great

I have been wanting to move over to the proton calendar for a while now, and the short time I have spent with it shows that it could be my calendar app of choice but it’s missing something which I think is absolutely crucial for a calendar app on a phone, a widget.
I am currently just using the standard Apple calendar app and it’s fine but I, alongside most other people here who have paid for proton, am quite privacy focussed so would like to move to this calendar so would highly encourage the proton devs to please add this to the roadmap.
Aside from this, very impressed by the other services offered by proton and looking forward to see what they can do with this.

Oh, if only events were not missing

I so want this to work. But I have events that don’t show up in the app. That’s just not something I can trust. Imported iCals are visible online but don’t show up in iOS app. But they do if edited online and saved. Don’t even need to do an actual data change for it to show up - just open to edit then save.
Ipad999
Version 2.8.0

Has not been fully tested on smaller screens

Defining events using a Wednesday, either the year or time of day gets truncated with "..." on the screen on an original iphone SE. Showing a year as "20..." doesn't narrow much down within my anticipated lifetime.
If you kept to the short format as on the date selector itself (Weds rather than Wednesday) then this would not happen.
Then if I view an event, where there's more than enough space on the screen, the day name doesn't even appear at all. Why such inconsistency?
Please test and ensure the app is usable on all officially supported devices, otherwise what's the point of them installing the app?
Plus when defining or editing an event, accidentally scrolling the end before the start goes and shifts the start rather than prevent me from setting an impossible range. This makes it far too easy to make mistakes.
If I'm editing one end of the event range it should not modify the other end.
Yes it's a Proton app and I don't doubt very secure and so on, but usability-wise this is nowhere near your other apps yet.

No widget!

No widget which makes it a pain to see upcoming events. Have you seen apples calendar widget options. They are amazingly useful. Also why does my calendar need to be encrypted online? Wouldn’t it be more secure to stay on my iPhone then it wouldn’t require encryption? Plus it isn’t locked with faceID
And it can’t even add an event from proton mail to proton calendar.

Widgets need to come out soon!

I’m not going to be too harsh on Proton as they already have too many products to work on. They have been releasing so many new things in such short period that I can understand there can be some delays on new features equally released among all available products. However, I would love to have a full replacement for the Apple Calendar with full integration on my phone and hopefully a stand alone Contacts App where I can search for my contact and call them straight away without having to go through the mail app. As for now I will keep supporting unconditionally, till the day there is some massive controversy regarding privacy and Proton. I am very satisfied with this application, however, there is one element that should be immediately changed or corrected. There is a lack of security for access to the application. There is no pin or Face ID option. The application is not secured. The only way is to log out every time, which is a nuisance.

Almost perfect.

It is everything you’d expect, plus the fact only you can see your calendar.
However, it’s missing a lot of settings which is a bit annoying. What’s worse is that there are more options on different platforms. I often need to login on desktop to do something that I should be able to do on my phone.
Overall though, it is good and private. I wouldn’t use anything else.

It’s good, I’m just waiting for it to be better.

I love proton, I’ve found it’s a great replacement especially with having unlimited and using mail etc. but the calendar is slacking, I’d love a native iPad app, the ability to have widgets, more streamline things such as easy way to add national holidays, as for the uk it’s harder than US.
For those wanting to move away from google or Microsoft, the calendar is the hardest.
Overall it good and I’m excited for the new changes in the upcoming years

You can import calendars…

Just a quick one for people saying they can’t import calendars. If you go to your calendar on the website, you can import other calendars…

At last ! Proton calendar for iOS

It’s a relief to see Proton calendar for iOS. User friendly and secure.
Looking forward to have it synched with iCloud calendar just as it is with the Google one.
And with the earlier feedbacks on board, I think it’s almost there. Very exciting.

It took forever for an app and it’s very okish

I know dev constraints are an issue. However for the time it took to have this released it’s really frustrating to have such a basic app.
I am a long time paying user of proton, and can tell calendar is not up to the same standards as mail, unfortunately 😢

Nice to see it

I’m loving the app, and all of the migration has been pretty seamless so far.
One main feature request would be around widgets, both for Lock Screen and Home Screen - I love using this to get a quick grasp of my day ahead as well as what I’ve got next.

Great Start!

Been looking for a replacement for Google Calendar for a while and this is the cleanest and closest thing to it so far. There are still some minor refinements to make to the UI and more features to add like more view modes (particularly schedule, week & month), changing calendar colours, and a search bar, but so far it’s a great start!

Missing function

Like many people (I guess) the main attraction to switching to this calendar would be the ability to import existing calendars in order not to lose information by switching systems. As it stands this is like forgetting everything before the date you start using this calendar :-/

Good basic calendar

I’ve been using this on iPhone and iPad for some time via TestFlight, and it fulfils all my basic needs for a calendar, the only thing missing that limits my use is a text search facility. Hope to see that soon !

Better Than Having to Login to Website

I am looking forward to using once the calendar becomes a bit more robust. I'd like to have it for iPadOS far more than iOS, I would like to create separate calendars and have ability to share with non-Proton users, would like to have drive-time implemented, have ability to import calendar events from various apps, have multiple alarms, and addresses populate as they are entered. Some of these may be already in app, I just downloaded it on my iPad and came to AppStore looking for iPad version. Looking forward to t regular improvements.

Basic but a start

The app has a clean interface but is limited in offerings relative to other calendar apps like Calendars by Readdle and Fantastical at this time - natural language processing would be great as well as week views (with visibility of blocks rather than lists alone) and widgets

Good start, hoping for regular improvements

Pleased that the iOS calendar app is here! It’s looks great & does the job. There is definitely room for improvement - small refinements like providing UI feedback when you’re swiping between days so you can see what’s going on. I’d also like to see calendar events displayed in a month view to get a sense of what I have coming up without having to select individual days (for me, it’s the most useful view in the Readdle Calendars app). Look forward to future releases.

Finally here!

Nice to see it’s finally here! For me this is missing the ability to invite people to events within the app, receiving notifications for invites via the calendar app and a widget for today.
