best football game

Quality experience, I truly recommend buying the game so you can change the difficulty to hard or extreme to really add some levels. Tika Taka build up play or Leicester long ball play, to a single player dribbling around the whole team. You can play how you like. Also, I clicked “Restore Pay” and lo and behold, the game remembered I had purchased the full version years after I did it. 6 stars.

This game is honestly mid. I think it could be soo much better if you could play the entire game instead of only playing 3-4 attacks per game. It does honestly have potential and can actually be pretty addictive but please can this game have some changes… Like, turn it into a retro version of fc mobile for example. Then it would be a ‘5 Star’ game, truly. But right now it’s not great to be honest but I wouldn’t say this game is awful, so feel free to try it. 👍👌

A great football game

I would’ve give this game a 5 stars if only one of the only complaints I have is that there is only he champions league the game would be so much better if there was a Europa League and even a Conference league, I’ve been playing this game for about a year and a bit I think and I’m on season 54 and I love it, it’s a great game

Nice game, but quite unfair

Firstly, I really enjoyed this game. The mechanics I think are good and the level of each team is decent enough to make good competition. I have a couple problems though. Firstly, it is really difficult to add stars to the team rating. It seemed at some point I was getting player improvement every 2 games, but in the space of 4 seasons I only got half a star extra in attacking and defence. Secondly, it’s the swapping teams. I know I tells you that you start with the worst team if you swap, but this is just really unfair. I went from Coventry to Liverpool, expecting to keep a decent enough squad, but it’s not…just one star in everything. When I moved up with Coventry I won the cup and come 7th in the league with around 3.5 stars in each category, but cannot happen with 1 star. In the end i went a whole season with I think 3 points and got knocked out of anything because I just cannot compete with any of the teams. As much as I hate to say it, it made me quit the game entirely, and although I understand the challenge moving to a club has, being dumped into the deep end in the prem is a horrible idea, and quite frankly, made me start to resent even playing. If you took on the team that was there the previous season, I’d be more than happy, but you don’t, which really confused me and wound me up. Like I said, great game when you’re winning, but do not swap clubs in the prem unless you want 2 seasons minimum of just pure deadness, watching your team get slaughtered every week.

Fun for about a day until you realise that this is pure bait. You never have enough bux, so the devs are forcing you towards the paid game, the opposition don’t have to make an effort and always score straight after you do, and the controls are only okay when they work.

Brilliant but flawed

Brilliant old-school football game, lovely sense of nostalgia, excitement, tension, drama, a nice blend of easy football management and in play arcadey footballing. Flawed though, in that after 5-6 seasons the player contracts expire faster than you can earn money to renew them. So either it’s off gameplay-balancing, or it’s a cynical way to try to make you buy in game currency known as Bux…. Want to love it but this flaw makes me not love it…

Addictive & thoughtfully designed

So impressed with this. Perfect mix of light club management and actually controlling the games. I’ve had some absolute drama as seasons edge to a close and my team concedes in injury time to miss out on the playoffs on goal difference 😂, and it takes a lot of thought and work to create a phone game capable of that depth without bogging down the player with fiddly admin like the main management titles do. I played about 5 full seasons but in the end an annoying quirk stopped it being so fun; all your money is spent constantly renewing your top players contracts & if you’re forced to release them if you can’t afford to. Other than that, this is almost a perfect football game.

The game is really good I love playing it and it just keeps me on all day. One thing. I would like is that you can trade players to different clubs like if I have a player who wants to join his dream team I can try to trade him and do a negotiation with the other team on how much they will take for him, to make it more easy if the player is highly rated it’s more easy to trade him If he is A very good player with a very good stat sheet they will also easily Accept the deal. What’s the point of joining a top club (or any club) if your just gonna start at the botttom with a poor team and low funds? It’s unrealistic and makes it not fun. When I join a top club I want a top team and better funds please fix this or else the whole function of joining a new club is absolutely useless.

Great game but needs some new additions

This game is simple to play and fun. If someone buys the global champions pack it should be unlock- able in normal career, as if it’s part of the career. Definitely needs division 3 and 4 in England, the Euros and other international competitions. Super fun though.

Good start but gets tiring

Start of the game was fun, progression felt natural but when you get a move to a big team it gets tedious. for some reason the big team is worse than the team you move from. Buying players is expensive, keeping players you build up is expensive and you often have to just give up on them. I really liked the game at the start because it felt like it cared about an actual experience but after the third season it’s clear it’s just like other mobile games- designed to frustrate you into spending money which is a shame because I would of bought the full version if it weren’t for some of these design choices

Untapped potential

Had the free game to start with, was a lot of fun building a team and then winning everything then swapping teams and the game was really enjoyable, It then go too easy on medium difficultly so I bought the full version and went on hard mode. To start with it just makes the AI so much better, the skill gap between normal and hard is insane, every single AI is now faster than any player on your team even if they have max speed and are 5 star, this means you can never really dribble past players. Then the AI can seem to slide tackle you from any angle, sometimes from directly behind you and they get back up super quickly whereas when your player gets tackled he takes a good 2-3 seconds to get back up. Then when you go to tackle unless you are at 90 degrees to them or infront of them it’s basically always a foul. And the fact you aren’t able to defend isn’t fun, the ball will bounce in your half once and it will be a ‘missed chance’ even if one of your defenders is about to collect the ball. I don’t even want to imagine what extreme difficulty is like.

Innovative gameplay, my go to footy game

I think that it’s brilliant how New Star learn from their Retro Bowl format and then adapt to innovate and bring in a brand new football format in Retro Goal. Absolutely brilliant and I’ve been thinking about other sports like Rugby etc, but obvs you need the footfall to make it pay. It’s my ‘Angry Birds’ of 2023 if you like. Easy to pick up and play on the Tube or for a quick 5 minutes of my own time, and does not have all the flashing buy me, buy me and unwrapping stickers and Easter eggs to get past. You can focus on the game. I’d love to see ‘team editor’ and ‘kit editor’ features from Retro Bowl in Retro Goal so that you can ‘build your own league format’ as I love to do in Retro Bowl. Means you can create a Champions League team format or your local non-league Bromsgrove Rovers format if you like. Thank you New Star.

Could be very good

When the ball is cleared by the opponent straight towards my defenders, with no opponent forwards anywhere near, the play is over -just because the ball crossed the halfway line. This is extremely unrealistic and just annoying, running lots of plays.

Adding some skill moves (e.g. the roulette, nutmeg,elastico,…) would make beating defenders a lot more entertaining.

Penalties and free kicks should be shown in an on field perspective (life FIFA).

Tactics should be easier to change.

Show what is happening during defensive plays, so people can directly see who is bad and who is good, and what players’ weaknesses and strengths are in an interesting way. Give 2x and 3x time options for those who don’t want to see things in such detail.

Make time move when passing ball around (for example, after every 10 moves, 5 mins should have been played).

LET ME PLAY IT MY SELF

I will lob pass the ball then they will have it then it will fall back to my feet but it says chance missed and that brings me onto my next point when the other team are on the attack you can’t control the people to tackle it has made me lose 4 games out of the first 10 I’ve played. I also hate when the other team clears it but I win the ball and it still says chance miss even tho I could still lob pass it and not concede I have nearly just not got promoted because of it . Tbh it kinda a disgrace how when the other team score 1 after another cause if the other team scores you should start kickoff like a normal game it’s got even worse i was 4-0 up before half time but as soon as the whistle went to start the second half I couldn’t play conceded 5 goals and at last I could play in the 95th minute but as soon as I kicked it the whistle went to end the game

Started with Nottingham Forest and got a couple of trebles with Arsenal. If your team is >3 Star Rating, play on Hard Mode. Only start playing Extreme when you have a 3< Star Rated squad, because only then it’s actually a challenge (not impossible) and the game starts being fun. Now dominating with Fenerbahçe 💙💛.

Great game but is definitely pay to win

Renewing players contract who are worth 50 coins for like 750 coins is near impossible, how when 4 players run out are you supposed to pay so much to renew them I don’t know.

Other than that the game is great but at one point I had 12 players and now I have 4 players because I just didn’t have the funds to renew them and play the game

Needs a Kit Editor

Love the game, the World Cup update is a great touch. The only criticism I have is some of the kits don’t look right and often clash (white home versus light blue away) can there be an addition of a kit editor like in retro bowl, with home/away/alternate options. I wouldn’t mind if it was a one time purchase to unlock the editor, I just think it would make the game that much more enjoyable

Contracts

The game and the premise is extremely good and challenging but I am concerned about how the contracts work.

At the start of the season you must renew all players contracts even though the season before it shows that the players contracts will expire in 8/9 years time. Probably Costing about 3000 coins which is basically impossible to obtain without buying them. This essentially stops the player and the club from growing without the usage of IRL money.

So it’s basically pay to win

Very promising

Positives:

- Great gameplay

-Great menu game too (transferring, selling...)

-Visuals are very good

-Records and achievements gives more meaning to play

Negatives:

-When moving to a top club, the clubs overall is reset to the lowest. Despite seeing why having everything handed to you on a plate ruins the fun, having a terrible team with no additional funds makes it pointless to join a top club. To the point where on extreme, it’s impossible to be beat Caen for example even though you’re are managing PSG.

-Difficulty jump from hard to extreme is, well, extreme. I had a long state of hard being too easy but extreme being unbearably difficult which put me off the game for a while.

-A bit petty, but no cinematic once winning a league. I understand that this would be difficult to implement, but having a picture of a trophy is a bit underwhelming.

-Finally, the potential stats given would be better, if you had a scouting facility to upgrade because there’s is no reason why buying another player is worth it. It almost makes the academy redundant. Player stats would also be appreciated p, implementing something like player development in fifa.

Overall:

Despite the negatives being long, I can’t begin to explain how good of a game it is. I only list the negatives more in depth as I believe that this game has the potential to be a masterpiece.

Fun but broken goalkeepers

Very fun game with nice mechanics. Management side and trying to balance contracts is good too.

However, it has got to a point where even extreme difficulty is too easy because the goalkeepers are really (disproportionately) bad at certain things. Any shot with lots of curve from the left hand side of the area will go in and more problematically (but hilariously) any shot from an extreme angle from the left of the goal (any distance) will go in.

If the two goalkeeping issues were solved extreme would be a really good challenge but due to this it’s possible to score a goal at will if needed to win a game.

Almost perfect

Created an amazing team with Coventry. Got promoted and in my second season I won the cup and came second in the league. The season after I lost half my team due to contracts being really expensive. Games are constantly high scoring, which is unrealistic but then again it’s not a proper simulation game. Would be cool if you could see the player stats for other teams and the top goal scorers of the league. International tournaments and adding a best player in the world trophy would be the cherry on top. However, this is a really good game for 99p and the creators know how to make constantly amazing mobile games. Would love to see this type of game done with other sports as well.

This is the first time i have ever written a review for a game, i first tried the retro bowl. Being from England I’ve never really played much American football i liked the concept but i didn’t know how to play, but after finding out they have a soccer version . This game is amazing i cannot even explain it is currently 7 am and i cannot put the game down.

Disappointed

As Retro Bowl is so brilliant I thought I’d give this a try but I was disappointed as I don’t understand why you can’t play by swiping your device as in Retro Bowl, unless I am missing something. This is what makes Retro Bowl so great. I have tried Retro Ball twice but just find the controls too fiddly. Retro Bowl was instantly playable, pick up and play, but with a great learning curve. I have won 106 bowls including a couple on extreme. In future I’d like to see MVP for the final itself, teams rated on both run and pass for offence and defence and some variety in extreme mode as making them all 5 star gets a bit monotonous.

In terms of Retro Ball I would suggest adding a swipe option so more device friendly. Apologies if this is already an option but I lost interest with it very quickly.

Amazing game with high potential but one slight problem

All out I think this is an absolutely wonderful game to play besides the fact you have to pay to continue, why? IMO I think to see people who can’t get it or simply disallowed by parents or others. I love the game but that one thing keeps me from playing it every day every week every month every year.

Solid game!

Solid solid game. After playing retro bowl for ages it was so nice to pick up this game and see some familiarities as I was able to pick up up start away. Gameplay is fun and unique. Little features like each players boy hood club and family really add to the game as well!

Maybe adding in similar editing feature such as team colours and names like in Retro Bowl would be cool but a really fun game!

Disappointing

Easily the worst New Star Soccer game, the control on this one are just no good unfortunately.

You should be able to select which player is slide tackling or control the movement of other players off the ball (as you could in the original as a captain) just for a couple of examples. Agree with other reviews that a ball shouldn’t immediately become a lobbed pass over a certain distance also.

Bit of a shame but if you’re looking for a great football game go with New Star Soccer or New Star Manager.

Really enjoyable little sim game which does improve as you progress. Surprising how much control you have and rewards of seeing through the highs and lows of a football season.

Definitely retro and a blast from the past of the games we would invest so much time in.

A major bug in the purchases?

I really like this game. Almost as addictive as Retro Bowl, and I’m loving the favourite team aspect and ability to play in different countries.

However I think there’s a major bug in the purchases function. I’ve twice tried to buy players and the transaction has gone through, but when I push ‘continue’ the app freezes and restart. When I restart, the purchase hasn’t happened in the game (ie, the player isn’t in jussi as, he’s still listed in the transfer market) , but in real life my back account has been charged.

I know we’re not taking huge sums of money but I’ve lost £5 to this game now, and that shouldn’t happen.

Difficulty disparity a problem, but good overall

Been playing for a while, really good game but difficulty disparity was just a huge problem for me at least… ‘HARD’ was incredibly easy for me to the point that it wasn’t very fun but I tried ‘EXTREME’ and that was impossibly difficult even with a full team of 4/5 star players… really needs fixing, maybe a ‘VERY HARD’ between these 2 difficulties to make the game harder in the late game but not impossibly difficult.

Great to begin with

Took me a while to get use to the game mechanics, but when I got into it I really started enjoying the game. However, you soon realise that it costs too much to maintain a decent squad and you find yourself having to let players go… which is pretty much the situation I found with NSS, you can enjoy to a certain point but eventually you have to spend real money to progress. I realise the game is initially free, but I’d rather pay up front and have a more enjoyable experience for longer. As much as I enjoy the game, I’m going to leave it alone after too long as my squad dwindles and progress stalls.

Great Start

The game is great, following a similar art style and gameplay mechanics as retro bowl.

A few gripes I have are:

the pass mechanic should not auto switch to a lobbed ball as you go further but it should be an option for a ground pass or lobbed one (similar to the new retro bowl update).

The trophy cabinet is glitched as that winner of the premier league does not update and is stuck on 2020, so I don’t have the win even though I’ve won it twice already.

The teams ratings are very random, the top teams premier league (and other tier 1 leagues) should have a higher rating and it shouldn’t be randomised as it seems to be currently with the team coming 20th and Manchester United having basically the same start ratings.

Lastly, it’s a bit too easy to progress and build the best team, basically within a season to 2 and the progress should be more incremental to feel more rewarding.

Overall these are small issues and the game is thoroughly enjoyable and I can easily recommend it to anyone. Keep up the good work!

Good but Flawed

Really enjoyable little game with surprisingly deep management mode. Great to be able to take control of so many teams and get youth players etc. Gameplay is also fun once you get used to the controls.

However the way the game is set up to almost force you into microtransactions is a huge drawback. Players are so expensive and their contracts so short that it feels impossible to actually build a squad that lasts - all of your players simply leave, either midway through the season or at the end, and you can’t afford to renew their contracts. At the end of the season your team is basically gutted and you have to start from scratch, or you join a new team which also has essentially no players. Then you obviously lose games, which means no one wants to join and no money, rinse and repeat as nauseum.

Unless - you buy some coins or players. Then suddenly you can compete! I have managed to avoid this so far but it feels like the game is pushing you in that direction.

Unfortunately really want to love this game but can’t rate it 5 stars. Don’t remember any of these issues in retro bowl which is a class game

If you loved NSS you’ll also love this!

Been looking for a football game on my iPad for ages and this ticks all of my boxes. It’s not pay to win, the controls are immediately intuitive, it’s got multiple leagues and it’s an addictive manager career sim. Save your little gold coins and gradually upgrade your stadium or invest in better players.

Recommended for fans of the old player manager games on the Amiga. Thanks to the devs for a great little game!

Addictive but annoying in app purchases

Game is addictive and fun but…. The only annoying bit is that, although this is not a pay to win, the best players require you to spend real cash, regardless of how much you have in game. In my 4th season now and the best forward I can get is an old 3.5 stars player, when the 4+ stars one are all behind a paywall. I wouldn’t have minded paying a bit more for the game upfront but I don’t like those hidden mechanics requiring you to pay to keep progressing. At least add a in game cash price to those “premium” players.

Amazing mobile manager game

I have no complaints about this game. I’ve only had this game for an hour and I’ve already payed for the full version which is really cheap at £1 and it’s well made hence why it’s 5 stars the only thing o would like to see is something like a scout report from them searching players in a country something you would see in fifa. Apart from that it’s one of the best mobile football game I’ve played.

Addictive fun game

The game is really good I’ve been hooked since day one. I went with Blackpool and I got them into the prem, won the champions league first time of asking. I’m just starting my 7th season I’ve not moved clubs yet because I don’t really fancy starting from scratch and loosing all my players I managed to max out. It’ll be good if/ when you moved clubs you got to keep your team or at least some because the coins you use to buy them with runs down real quick and that money is also for your contract renewal, facilities ect

An amazing little football manager game!

Been playing for a week now and on my 5th season on hard (and no it’s not impossible to win you just need good players too do it, as expected 1-3 star players won’t win every match on hard) and having an absolute joy with the game, currently at Liverpool and have a strong youthful team and enjoy winning and losing a surprised match making some seasons very tense at the end. Like I said iv been enjoying the content available to me and can’t wait to move to my next club soon for the next challenge. I’d like to give some ideas about what I’d love to see in the game and hoping that the developers can see them, 1. I‘d love to see some better screens for when you win a trophy like when you win the Champions league there’s a little bit animation of a trophy being lifted with flares or confetti?? 2. could we get international football or jobs? With the respected competitions?? And lastly a screen a stat screen about your career such as your longest spell at a club? Your top goalscorer, best player longest win spree ect

Edit^ just joined Barcelona after a good domination at liverpool and I agree with others it’s impossible to win when your team is that bad, maybe make it so it’s Harder to join these big clubs but they reward you with a decent squad already?? Every team being rubbish you join Just is not motivating and building up is not a challange it’s the impossible

Good game in here somewhere

I never ever wrote reviews but this game is so frustrating I should I would give some feedback.

I loved NSS and played Retro Bowl for 40 seasons. Both games brought huge amounts of joy. New star manager was slightly disappointing only insofar as it was more a freemium game. That said you could still play it and succeed without paying for ‘bux’.

With this game I just can’t see how you can succeed without paying real money. I’m happy to pay for games, I got far more than my money’s worth from NSS and Retro Bowl so maybe I shouldn’t complain but with this it’s impossible to keep a team going, update a stadium and do all the other things that are demanded each season.

It’s a shame because there’s a good game waiting to get out here but it’s hamstrung by a freemium mindset.

Decent but could be improved

Really enjoying playing this but feels almost impossible to make any progress with your team due to money. The amount of money you have seems constantly to be spent on renewing contracts so you can’t buy improved players. If you do buy a player, you’ll soon lose one of your old players as you can’t afford their new contract. It hasn’t yet, but I imagine it will make the game tiresome quite quickly.

Wanted to like it, but difficulty levels are bizarre

I started off loving it and couldn’t work out what people were complaining about. Paid my 99p gladly, and to be fair I’ve certainly had 99p worth of fun - I can’t complain about the price. But having breezed through “normal” difficulty, I decided to start a new game in “hard” - but it was quite simply impossible. I’ve been through a season and a half nearly and have not won a single game, and only drawn two, the rest all losses. It’s absurd how the difficulty jumps - considering after “hard” there is also an “extreme” mode, but frankly it can’t get more extreme than losing every game can it? And of course it’s a vicious circle, because the more you lose the harder it is to win because good players don’t want to join, existing players lose morale and then start getting red cards (which also bans them from the next game) and your ticket takings are low. The cynic in me wonders if this is to push people toward paying for the “premium” players for their team, but maybe that’s not the case. Either way, I’m bored of winning every game on “normal” and bored of losing every game on “hard” so this one’s deleted.

Great gameplay but geared towards IAP

Love the game, gameplay is really fun and the lite touch management is perfect for mobile.

However marked down 2 stars, as it’s a paid for game but the economics mean it’s incredibly tough to even tread water and earn enough coins to replace out of contract players (even with worse ones). It’s clearly designed to encourage you to buy coin packs. I’d much rather the game cost 2.99 or 3.99 and allowed you to earn through playing, and reduce the IAP to Premium Players only.

The perfect mobile football game

For me, at least.

I don’t have time to play a full career mode on fifa etc so I’ve always wanted a game were I can dip in and out of matches rather than play the whole thing, and to be able to play abbreviated seasons.

When I saw it was from New Star it was a no brainer. It’s every bit as good as their other games - a hybrid of NSS, Retro Bowl and NS manager (without the card bits).

Can’t recommend it highly enough. Insta buy if you like football or NSS

I’m terms of feedback, I’d like to see:

Player contracts tuned a bit to be longer (or transfer windows added) - mid season expiry & retirement is a bit weird

A kit/player name editor

International management

Cloud saves

Enjoyable but repetitive

Very good wee game, the music can be a bit annoying but it’s all in keeping with the 16-bit theme and I’m sure it can be switched off (I haven’t bothered to look). The gameplay itself is easy to pick up, but my one worry is already a season and a half in, it’s very very repetitive. The game does feel like a bit of a ‘grind’ after a short while.

Great football game

This game is new so … somethings need a tweak such so corners and crossing from the top down to the penalty spot, however it’s really entertaining and gets you hooked right away. Lots of countries and lower divisions to chose from and you can build your team your way with them tactics and formations which actually make a difference. I’d watch this closely as if it’s anything like retro bowl it’s going to be updated regularly and it’s going to be huge!

Fun to play and easy to pick up

This game is really easy to get to grips with and is great to play in short bursts. I’ve enjoyed it and it’s similar to football games I played on early consoles.

My only gripe is sometimes the AI comes back at you a bit hard and you can lose a decent lead without any opportunity to score back!

Addictive like NSS

Great game, really fun. Couple of bugs as it’s early days, would be helpful if there was an option to rehire coaches like players once their contracts are up. Also once a player gets to 10 bookings he seems to be suspended every other game. Would be nice to simulate minor continental trophies like europa league and have a few extra English divisions. Also it seems to only play half a season??

Awesome game can’t stop playing

Grew up playing NSS this game is really good only £1 and you get 10 games free I’m on normal difficulty and haven’t lost a game winning every thing so far in my 5th season so I would like normal difficulty to be harder since i was a basic championship side and also would like to see more transfer players some at a point when you have a good team aren’t good enough and your stuck with a not so good player maybe add the refresh like there is on coaches

Great start, looking forward to updates

Amazing start to this game, brings the fun and ease of play seen in Retro Bowl and I love how similar it is. Has a great variety of leagues and teams to play. Love the ability to play a half season as well to progress through the years quicker.

Fear it sort of over complicates itself though at some points. Also I find it much harder to build a strong side compared to Bowl as in bowl the draft works to assist weaker teams, in this you struggle to earn money or sign players and playing on harder difficulties is somewhat depressing when you lose every game with a pathetic squad. The disparity between difficulties is also fairly high, on medium I am currently top of the Premier League in my third season with Derby with no stat higher than 3 stars, yet with almost the same squad on hard I could hardly manage a win in the championship.

Looking forward to a data editor and a dynamic difficult or just fixed difficulty settings.

Great game, great fun but

Overall the game plays nice and is fun to play but the one issue is after you’ve completed a season you’ll have the choice to move teams but when you move team you then have to basically start from the beginning it’s not realistic and takes away from the game but again overall it’s fun and addicting
