It doesn’t track from Huawei

It’s quite good fun but sometimes it doesn’t log all the data so feels very slow- I walk 8-9 km and it logs one!

Not stable enough

Despite following all instructions for setting up, giving access to health settings etc. recording of distance is a matter of luck. Some days it records nothing. My estimated journey completion time has come and gone and is now estimated to be completed in a year.

Great app, had a laugh over some of the names of places ;)

Almost perfect but does need tweaking

It’s so close to being great but the characters need to be tweaked. Mr Underhill is perfect, the challenge to keep up with him is great. Currently 194km behind him on my third attempt to try match up to him. But the others are underwhelming, Jon Snowflake is 1200km behind and I never feel like he’s even close to being on my heels.
Also the option to buy characters would be good as I very much want to be a dwarf but I don’t want to subscribe either. I’ve bought unlimited distance as I wanted it and you guys deserve some cash but if you put £2 to buy a character I’d probably buy a new character each time I start a new round of the adventure

Great idea but the app doesn’t work!

I’ve used this app for over a year and always loved it but recently the app has stopped working. I can’t click to see the map, achievements or settings, nor can I scroll up/down. Such a shame as up until that point I was loving the app :(

Lovely idea but…

I downloaded this app just over a year ago and I’ve found it really useful for keeping me motivated to go out and walk. I found myself thinking I’d just walk a bit further to get to the top of the next hill or to the next landmark. Soon after downloading it I paid £5.99 in order to measure longer distances, but for the past week it’s been capping the distance measured at 1 mile and telling me I need to pay £5.99 again. I think it should be made more clear that this is an annual charge rather than a one time only payment.

Great idea but make the text bigger

Love the concept and the implementation but I need a magnifying glass to read the text.
The text isn’t the easiest to read but it being so small makes it tough to see it no matter what you do. I’m using a Pro Max phone and it’s still too small.
Other than that it’s great.

Beautiful and fun

My average daily step count has gone up by about 2km a day because of this app. I’m a month in to using it and it’s still exciting every day to check it to see where I am. I appreciate the dedication to book accuracy—really cool and a definite high point. I also like challenging Alice—the challengers are always kept interesting by the various activities they get up to and the competition certainly keeps me walking. Seriously love this app
UPDATE: After a year and a half I FINISHED IT!! It’s such an achievement! It’s been a great companion on my adventures and I’m so thrilled to have completed it. I’m 100% happy to pay for the full version of it. Just so much fun

Great motivation and so much fun!

I love this app! I’ve almost completed the journey to destroy the ring for a second time. Each journey has taken around 11 months to complete, and I walk and hike a lot! Please, please make a new journey! Maybe one following the trail of the Hobbit ?
Thank you for such a great app!

Overall lovely app

Great app, the only thing I find lacking is the “challengers”. All the slow and normal ones are several km behind me and the gap will only grow, but the fast one is 19km ahead on day 2. I walked 7km and he is 19 ahead! My 7km was 11,000 steps, which means to keep up with him, I would need to do somewhere in the region of 40,000 steps a day!
It’s also not got great syncing. I have walked 7.6km today on fitbit, and even after syncing it multiple times into the health app, the fantasy hike app still says I’ve done 4km. Even after using the search for data.
Finally, the maths isn’t great. Used it for two days:
Day 1: 7.48km
Day 2: 4.61km
Average: 7.48km
And it’s not even only counting “complete” days as the average was under 7km a few hours ago.
Not bad for a mostly free app but it’s lacking in some areas and would benefit for direct sync with things like Fitbit

Lovely app but..

I really like this app, it motivates me to get out more and push myself to go on long walks. However, only being able to make 1.5k progress if you’re not paying for a subscription is a bit annoying. Maybe making it free to make as much progress as possible would be better and instead making money off of adding friends to your quest and speed boosts and so on. I just think the progress should be free otherwise it becomes a bit dull. But seriously great app and good idea, doing a great job ❤️

Pointless without paying at least £6

Kind of insane to have to pay so much for what is actually the fundamental bit of the game, and such a simple thing too. Just put ads on it’s ridiculous. Plus if I’m paying for an app don’t use AI images it’s ridiculous.

Inaccurate Tracking

So I’ve given the app a week and I’ve just not enjoyed it due to the inaccuracy of the tracking through the app. I’ve given the app full access to absolutely everything for it to attempt to accurately track my journey to Mordor. However, it’s just not reading correctly the amount of steps I’m actually doing. It only ever records a fraction of my actual steps. If I do 10k it would only track 1.5k and that just really demoralises me and makes me not enjoy the app.

Rubbish, need to pay

I thought this would be a fun thing for me and the gf to use to track our walks but after half a day at work we get a notification saying we’ve ‘reached our walking limit’ and to pay for premium.
Absolute joke that such a basic app forces you to pay or it’s not worth it. There are better apps out there, avoid this.

my favourite tracking app but lost progress

I love this app, it’s such a cute and fun way to track activity and I enjoyed making progress. But a couple of months ago, I was shocked to open the app to find it had lost all my progress. I tried everything to restore it but unfortunately was unsuccessful. I still love this app but just a little disappointed.

Amazing!

I love this app! Makes walking so much fun! I love the animation and going back to check my route and read the comments. My only wish is that they add more fantasy themed walks for when you complete the first one: Hogwarts, Narnia, Wonderland…there are so many opportunities to develop further! Please tell me you’re working on this!

Good, but limited

I love the graphics and the gorgeously coloured pictures that are revealed at each major step. There’s no way to add distance from a non-Apple watch pedometer which is a bit frustrating. Having said that, really enjoying the app and it is making me walk more as that’s the only way to find out what happens next 🙂

Nice

As someone who both like walking and LOTR, it’s a nice app besides only being able to track a mile without paying £3.99. For me, that’s the only downside. As someone in their last yr of school (and having like no money) and just generally has to walk a lot just to get around the campus, it would be nice to i was able to track a bit longer than just a mile without paying (tho I completely understand needing a bit of money to continue supporting the app).

Such a great motivational tool but would be even better if it supported tracking things like cycling distance rather than just pedometer walking distance

The ring is gone, long live the ring

It’s really, really great. Motivating, entertaining, beautifully done. But now that the ring has successfully reunited with the fires of Mount not-Doom, it’d be nice to think about expanding into other worlds. I appreciate not-LOTR is the perfect world, but perhaps a Harry Potter style journey from Kings Cross to Hogwarts or similar would work.

Loved it! But no fanfare at the end?

I have really enjoyed this app, it has taken me 18 months to complete & especially loved the notifications on my i-watch and all the milestones and LOTR theme. Have to admit I was excited to finish and disappointed with the ending. No fireworks? Eagles to the rescue or fanfare? I felt I deserved more of a celebration :)

2024-07-11

Brilliant!

I’m absolutely loving this app. I’m not a big exerciser and I don’t walk long distances (however much I enjoy walking) but I love the Lord of the Rings. My husband saw this app and thought it would help me keep myself motivated to get fit again after having my daughter and he was right. I love checking how far I’ve walked each day and where I am on the map. The milestones are great and the comparison with where Frodo is can be quite hilarious. It didn’t take long for him to overtake me!
I’m currently projected to reach Mount Fire in two years time!! But hopefully can bring that down as my ability to walk further increases.
It was really easy to set up- it seems to just use the data that your health app is already collecting. And as long you have it in your pocket you don’t need to think about turning it on to ‘log’ a walk or anything, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting to do that.

Completed it…finally!

Always up for a challenge, and when I saw this, I knew it was something I wanted to do. As someone who works in an office, hitting the 10k target each day can be difficult, however, this app pushed me to achieve that target each day.
Firstly, if you want to beat Mr Underhill, you will need to pay the £3.99 for the unlimited distance. Secondly, you will also need to switch on your paddle bonus, and lastly, average 8miles / 13km a day (if possible).
A word of warning, Mr Underhill is very quick at the start but does take long breaks throughout the journey, so just keep walking and you’ll eat into his lead. Overall, it took me 170 days, starting Jan 1st and finishing June 18th.

Great and Amazing

This app is amazing. Wish there was another film or TV version of this. I could think of ideas all day.
My ideas if their was another one out there.
Harry Potter. Hunting down the horcruxes.
Walking Dead
Jurassic Park
Narnia. Journeying from Wardrobe to Aslan’s camp.
Back to the Future. Fix what you done and go back in the present.
Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix Version). Escape from Count Olaf and his henchmen.
King Kong. Journey through Skull Island.
Labyrinth. Journey through the Labyrinth and save the baby brother
Percy Jackson (Disney+ Version). Journey from the camp to the Underworld.
Even thought of animated ones else well. I can think of more but these are the top five.
Moana. Journey and travel to return the heart of Te Fiti
Finding Nemo. Journey and find Nemo
Mulan. Journey and defeat the huns and save China.
Coco. Journey through the land of the dead and to return to the land of the living
Shrek. Journey from the swamp to the Dragons Keep.

Excellent - if you can pay

I really like the simplicity and charm, but the free version caps the trackable distance at 1.5 km a day. That’s so low that it defeats the purpose of having the app at all - unless you can pay. For context, the average person should walk 10 km a day. Someone of my halfling stature (5ft) should walk at least 6-7 km a day, and the upper limit on what the free version tracks is 1.5 km - not even half, and certainly not in any way motivating you to get much steps in. I implore devs to increase the free distance limit to at least 5km - half of what the average person *should* walk.
BUT, if you can afford the premium, this is an excellent app.

Amazing app for LOTR fans

As someone who loves anything and everything lotr, this app is incredible. Really great app and very smooth to run. My only complaint is i wish there was more! (nothing against the app itself - a testimony to how good it is!) I think adding Bilbo’s adventure to the lonely mountain would be a great addition, also possibly adding Frodo’s or Bilbo’s journey back to the Shire after their respective adventures would be cool. Maybe even adding a version for Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli starting at Rivendell. All in all brilliant experience and felt great to reach the cracks of Mt Doom

Great app but sneaky charges

I am extremely disappointed with this app and I feel the need to express my frustration. My partner and I began using this app in January, shortly after I subscribed. I discovered that I could pay to unlock unlimited daily distance and add friends to track progress. However, it seems that the app has recently made changes where you now have to pay extra to see friends' progress. It is disheartening to have paid for a feature that is now being charged for as an extra.

Best walk tracking app!

First, I really like the fact that the story lines at the bottom are able to be re-read,as most people do not walk while looking at their phones. I also really like how the app is made.
One thing to be aware of however, if you are just downloading the app, is the app will not register walking of over 1 mile a day. However, you can either pay a premium membership which gets you unlimited miles, some other avatars and a couple other things, or a one time payment of £4 to get just unlimited miles, which is what I did.
I still think the app is worth 5stars even though you can't do more than a mile without paying, because I think it's important the app developers make a profit, and seeing that it's a free app, I understand why they would want to charge for these kinds of things.

I love it

I have tried a few walking in exercise apps. I find them very dry and boring. The fact that this app includes a quest and several virtual challengers Which go from not many steps for the beginner to quite a serious walker/runner making it so different. Along your walk it is constantly updating comments on where you are, which encourages you to keep checking in with it and motivates you into extra walking. It links with both your phone and your watch so all your steps are counted. For me, it is perfect and I I really enjoy the Lord of the rings vibe.

Features hidden behind a new paywall

I loved this app, but it seems there was an update and they hidden some features previously included with the purchase behind a subscription.
Honestly, this is such a rip off, Ive been on this journey for a while and in tracking progress with my friends which is half the fun, and with no warning this feature gets taken away and I’m to pay monthly?
It might make sense for new customers, however, I have already made a purchase for something that has now been gutted and I’m getting half of what I paid for. Disappointing..

2024-02-18

Was good until they went down the monthly payment route

Was super excited to spend the one off payment to unlock the full potential of the app as well as support the devs and app development with a simple one off purchase. The fact that this app was not going to become an addition to my existing list of exhausting subscription services was what excited me to purchase it.
To find out that my one off payment is now just basically a month’s subscription value to use the app properly, I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth and frankly disappointed.

Nice idea

The idea is pretty good, I am enjoying it so far, lots of fun references.
However the mechanic of the ‘challengers’ available is so broken. Mr underhill walks ‘fast’ the definition of this seems to be 2 times as fast as you walk…. I am averaging 13km a day, and mr underhill is averaging around 26km a day…A friend has the app, only averaging around 5km a day, and on their app, mr underhill is averaging 10km a day…. Basically it doesn’t matter how far you walk in a day, mr underhill is uncatchable, which is pointless.

Just what I was looking for!

I’ve only just started this quest, but it was exactly what I hoped for. The only reason I have given the app four stars, rather than five, is because I would like to be able to zoom in on the map, and see some detailed images along the path (the art work for the achievements is gorgeous, and I’d love more of that).

Great app

App is great. I downloaded and enjoyed so much that I purchased premium for a one off fee of £3.99. This allowed me to support the creators and unlock unlimited walking (being tracked). I wish the friend tracking feature was included for free rather than paying £1.99 a month but other than that the app is perfect.

Almost Perfect!!

I loveee this app!!! I think the one thing that would make it 1000x better for me is if the map was improved. If we could zoom in on it and see in slightly closer detail where we are along the journey + if names of locations were written on the map. Generally just making the map more interesting nothing too crazy but slightly more detail - but so much that it removed the mystery of the walk! Just things like “Rivendell” and “Moriah” written on the map, and the ability to zoom in and see it a bit clearer would be cool. Also I agree with other reviewers that you move extremely quickly thought interesting areas and then very slowly along flat planes - I guess this is more accurate to the story tbf but balancing it out just a bit more or at least having the environment at least change more while walking through the blank plane areas would make it better - rather than just moving very slowly over those parts. These are the main things I’d change!! It would also be really cool if you could see on the route where the challenges are (obviously you’d have to be ahead of them but still). Thanks so much for the app! Love it

So much fun

At first I was hesitant to pay to have the unlimited miles but it is definitely worth it . The little details are so fun . Getting the notifications while I spend my day walking about at work is definitely worth the 3.99 that it takes . Prefer paying 3.99 than having adds

Cute idea but don’t think it’s free

There’s loads about this app and the idea I like, but it is not free. I think it’s kind of misleading because what you get for free is a trial version that limits you to a mile a day (even if you aren’t hiking your step count will most likely be higher than this).
I think the app may actually be worth the money, but I wish that was clearer from the outset. To get any real use out of the app, you will most likely need to pay for the full version.

Great fun app

Walking + LOTR whats not to like. Such a fun way to set yourself a task and get moving!
Also VERY well priced, no subscription nonsense just a very reasonable one time payment for unlimited progress per day- which isn’t essential to use the app but i would definitely recommend it!
Would be cool if you could add friends and see their progress on your map too.

Love it, but Please tweak this.

I love this app! But this little detail keeps getting to me, and it’s affecting my enjoyment of this journey. I really hope you tweak it for the future.
In some areas, mostly where nothing is happening, it takes 20-30kilos to just move across the screen. At the same time, important areas like the mines or Riverdale take a fraction of that.
Details: Entering the mines at 1285kilos and exiting at 1353, with so much happening! Especially between 1349 and 1353. That was the part I was most excited for, and it was over in one walk for me…
And right after it you spend around 100kilos to walk a tiny distance from one bridge to another; see the 1385kilos point. I remember thinking the app is laggy on one of those days, because I walk for 5-7kilos, and my character didn’t move. (barely noticeable)
A lot of fans will miss the details that go by quickly and think they’re stuck in the same place in at times, which is boring.

Amazing Simple App

I really love this app - it has helped motivate me to get out into nature more, making me walk, run, and appreciate the scenery around me. This has in turn has improved my mood and overall mental health. I’m exciting for the option to add friends to the app that you have commented is in the making, and the potential for further routes/adventures in the future. Huge thanks to the team for thinking of such a simple but high quality idea and bringing it to life.

Needs you to pay

The idea is great. Whilst I understand time and effort has gone into this, it could still be free and fun. Without paying, you are limited to 1.5km per day. At the start, you choose someone to sort of race against. Even if you choose the slowest walker Hairy Potter, he will still travel further than you unless you pay. I’d have been more willing to pay if it delivered more. Such as a story etc. Hence why I believe this simple app shouldn’t have a price.

Brilliant until the end

I’ve loved this app the whole way through, however now it’s completed there is nothing left and it doesn’t record walking any more. My only option is to reset my progress and start again, which is a little disappointing. Maybe a table with stats at the end would have helped.

Such a fun app

I discovered this app towards the end of Covid. It’s made walking fun for me. Also thanks for adding the search for missing miles feature, as I lost some of my progress way back when and have now been able to recover it. Great to see customer feedback being taken on board.

Almost perfect

This app is amazing! My sister and I have been in competition ever since we downloaded it. The only thing that would make this app 100% perfect, would be if there was a setting where I could set my “challenger” as her/someone in my contacts. Is there any way this can be updated? Other than that, I love this app. The artwork, the book accurate milestones! Very very good!

great app

i personally didnt mind paying the little bit extra, HOWEVER the only issue i have is i feel as though the slowest challenger Hairyfoot Potter is still really not that slow.. im on day 16 and already 11 km behind and ive walked 46.5 km, im not an incredibly active person as id like to be as im a student and dont have much time for anything else so maybe i should just remove the challenger aspect tbf since im not really looking for a challenge just curious about walking to mordor idk

Fun app, potential for more!

Lovely and motivating app!
It would be lovely if when you finally arrive at Mount Fire and tick that box, to be able to go on other fantasy walks–no matter if they’re canon to the source material or not (e.g. from Winterfell/the Wall to King’s landing in Westeros, along the yellow brick road in Oz, around certain areas or one long route through every area in Elden Ring, through the map in Earthsea, etc.). Something like this alongside a profile where you can share which treks you have completed, etc. with others. It would certainly require a lot of research and programming, but it would be a nice thing to look forward to.
Additionally, having the ability to compete with/against friends would be swell!

Motivating!

I use this app with my brothers across continents. It’s become our regular thing to compete with how far each other is and it spurs us on for longer walks/ hikes. If only you could compete against your friends/ family on the map other than an AI! Definitely download it. Every nerds dream app!

Fun game, could be improved

This is a good little game to help motivate you to get the steps in. I paid for the upgrade to get the full features.
There needs to be an increment between the normal and fast challengers - Mr Underhill is crazy fast and would be impossible for most people to beat, but the “normal” challengers aren’t any challenge at all for a person doing 10k steps a day (which is a pretty average amount)
The lack of challenge is making me interact with the game less.

Perfect for a LOTR fan regardless of if you like to walk

I’m developing a pretty unhealthy obsession with LOTR and the entire Middle-Earth universe and was looking for apps to help supplement this. This app is totally adorable, I love the simplicity, and the attention to detail. Even if you aren’t competitive and don’t like to walk, you get to follow along with “Mr. Underhill’s” journey in real time, making it feel like you’re going on the Ring Quest yourself, in tandem with your daily life. I enjoy waking up every day to see how far Frodo would have got. I think it’s going to give me a real appreciation for his journey by the end. A must have app for LOTR fans, sporty or not!

My new favourite app!

Great app, lovely imagery, and it’s nice to get a demo first to know whether you want to pay for the full version - rather than it costing money to initially download. (I think it’s worth paying the small fee for premium)
Somethings I think would make it even better:
- once finished, it would be fun to be able to play against yourself from your previous run, to see if you can get to ‘mount fire’ in a much quicker time than before.
- to be able to play with friends as I think it would make the game a lot more interesting and add a fun competitive element.
- would be nice to sync with Fitbits and other health devices as the health app isn’t as accurate.
- to see how fast the challengers pace is, and their averages km per day, and so you know who’s best to challenge.
- to zoom in on the map more as it’s very small and zoomed out.
Over all an extremely good apps, but just some things that would make it more enjoyable, and make it being a paid game more worth-while, as there aren’t that many features!

Impressive app

This is such a good app! I never expected this to be so good for free, and it integrates with ios seamlessly. I love the push notifications telling me when I’ve hit a new area.
I also tried a similar paid app where you can buy an official LOTR journey for a high price (I bought their cheapest as a trial) and I was totally unimpressed and uninspired - and that one doesn’t integrate with ios whatever they tell you.

Great idea, but needs more social features

My friends and I all downloaded this app last week and, being fans of LOTR, immediately upgraded to the premium version. We assumed that there’d be a feature that allows you to track your progress against your friends (similar to NRC, Strava, etc). Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case. A shame, because otherwise this is a brilliant concept. Hope to see this feature coming down the pipeline in the not too distant future.

Perfect for LOTR fans & those tracking steps

Adds a fun twist to tracking steps and is perfect for LOTR fans, the quest follows the events of the story closely!
I agree with another review that the map could be more detailed (zoomable etc) and would be great to include optional “side quests”. Perhaps these have to be completed within a certain time frame (would allow for increased step goal over certain time frame as a challenge?)

Fun for Walkers and Fans of LotR

This is a great and enjoyable app for walkers and fans of LotR! I would highly recommend it; the app is easy to use, easy to understand and collects your walking data quickly.
The full version of the app - that I would recommend buying to maximise your enjoyment - only costs £4, and it’s a one-time payment.
The app has a few features that contribute to the enjoyment, taking into account locations from Middle-earth.

Worth it

Great app, lovely art and worth the £3ish to have unlimited steps, you understand where the devs are coming from and it’s such a small amount of money. Fun to see where abouts you are but it’s a pity the map is so small, would be great if there was a separate section that you could zoom in on and the markers for locations were more noticeable. Other than than, absolutely worth it :)

Love it overall - manual update would be great.

Love the theme and the fun of the app. Overall think it’s great and really enjoy using the app and mentally being a Halfling! An option to manually input data or for data to better update when manually adjusted would make it 5* for me. I do have my app linked to health app, but some adjusted data hasn’t updated which is a bit annoying.

Cute idea but disappointed on the daily limit

I found this idea amazing and so cute when I’ve discovered it, LOTR is one of my favourite things ever, so I was so thrilled when I downloaded it. But I find ridiculous the fact that you have to buy the premium version to keep track of all the steps in a day. The other day I’ve put feet outside the house and after 15 minutes I’ve reached my daily free limit, it was really NOTHING. And I wfh so I don’t even walk that much during the day. Not sure why I should pay for something that at the end of the day just read the steps from my health app 🤷🏻‍♀️

Favourite app

This is such an amazing app, really well done and more than happy to pay the one off fee.
Only thing I can’t work out is what the elevenses, second breakfast etc bit means at the bottom and how you achieve these. Mine are still on 0 but my friends has gone up when we both started on the same day.

A good looking but basic app.

A nice app setting a fairly good idea of a goal for people wanting to get fit, comparing your walk against a map of the walk from the shire to middle earth. It’s very nice and smart looking but that’s about it, high on cosmetic, low on content.
Some ideas to improve
A few friends have signed up, to help with the motivation it would be good to track your progress against theirs, to see how you and your group are doing.
The map is fairly high level, be good to have some lower level more granular map to see your progress. IE, let you zoom in. There’s plenty of reference material.
Have diversions (or challenges), offer Xkm to go off and see Tom Bombadillo, Ragaghast, Ent’s, Rivendell etc. Or you’re being CJ asked by Wargs, move an extra 3km today to outrun.
It’s a good start, hope the above helps.

Love this App

Found this app through you posting about it on Reddit almost a year ago.
The art is beautiful, the addition of other walking partners is a great idea as even with a disability, a friend of mine is able to feel like they have someone to walk against.
A year later I’ve still not quite completed it as I’m not allowed my phone on me, but excited to see the art towards the end!

Best fantasy fitness app I’ve seen

I’ve only had this app for a small amount of time but I’m totally in love with it! It has mesmerising art and the layout is very easy to understand! Your competitor Mr underhill is a great edition! Wish we could pick some sort of profile for him! But other than that this app has everything a Lord of the Rings enthusiast would like within an app.
Couldn’t recommend it enough!

Perfect companion on epic walk to work

I can’t praise this app enough. If you love epic fantasy and you have to walk anywhere (even down to the shops and back), this is the app for you.
It looks beautiful, it’s designed with a sense of humour and love for the source material, there are no adverts and it doesn’t intrude on your life. I’m not kidding, this is the loveliest little app I’ve downloaded in five years. I’ll be sorry when the journey is over.
