Description
Use GOV.UK ID Check to prove your identity when you:
• access some HMRC services with Government Gateway
• need to change how you get security codes to sign in to your GOV.UK One Login
It works by matching your face to your photo ID.
Before you start
You can use any of the following types of photo ID:
• UK photocard driving licence
• UK passport
• non-UK passport with a biometric chip
• UK biometric residence permit (BRP)
• UK biometric residence card (BRC)
• UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)
You can use an expired BRP, BRC or FWP up to 18 months after its expiry date.
You will also need:
• a well-lit area where you can take a good quality photograph
• an iPhone 8 or newer
• iOS 16.7 or higher
How it works
If your photo ID is a driving licence you will:
• take a photo of your driving licence
• scan your face using your phone
If your photo ID is a passport, BRP, BRC or FWP you will:
• take a photo of your photo ID
• scan the biometric chip in your photo ID using your phone
• scan your face using your phone
What happens next
The app only helps confirm your identity. You will return to the website of the government service you were accessing to view the results of your identity check.
Privacy and security
Your personal information will not be stored in the app, or on the phone when you finish using it. We collect your data securely and delete it when it is no longer needed.

On line application via the IPad was so slow and complicated it put people off trying to report to the UK Gov any tax changes ! Why don’t you warn people that the use of an IPad to confirm the person applying is a waste of time and should only be done on an IPhone or similar ! Pension plans
Well I have started the ball rolling to claim my old age pension. On retirement I was advised to defer my pension, that turned out to be a mistake. It looks as though it may have cost me thousands of pounds. On retirement look long and hard for any advice before putting pen to paper. I hope that this will help you.

Frustrated!
All going well with identity check but they could not verify my identity because the NI number is in my maiden name. Not joined-up at all as how could I get a passport in my married name without proving my marriage???? Left hand not talking to right. To change the name I need to register and prove my identity so now I’m going round in circles… I can’t be the only one with this problem???

Hard to use
I am 62 and although ok with technology I couldn’t get it to scan my passport so went to check identity with questions, questions so hard I couldn’t answer them or the options they gave were incorrect when you are my age you can’t remember exactly what month and year you first took out a bank account if I pressed I don’t know it said I must answer the question so couldn’t prove my identity but with help from my daughter I did manage to get my passport scanned after 30 minutes so this whole process took a very long time not user friendly

I found the Gov ID check relatively easy to use, but it did require me to sit in front of my pc and have my mobile and driving licence at hand. I work in an office and so I am used to form filling. Not sure how easy it would be to use with just a mobile.

Pretty impressive
I really like the easy experience of your application and it was really easy to follow all the steps and do the ID Check. I struggled with the scanning of my passport. Maybe you should add extra information to the steps to remove the phone from the phone case. It took me awhile to realise that was a problem. Once the phone was out of the phone case, it works like magic.

Terrible! Obstructive!
This app had 1 purpose for me and that was to take a photograph of my passport and it couldn’t do that. It kept glitching saying there was glare, or fingers in the screen even though there wasn’t.
Needs to be better and reading documents through the camera, as this makes me getting a document renewal a lot more difficult now.
Plus I’ve now had to download yet another single purpose app to my phone.

Easy when you know how
I struggled at first to scan my passport correctly, because I was trying to scan the whole open passport, not just the bottom section. Probably because at airports you need to put the whole thing in face down. Once I’d realised my mistake it was easy, and took only a few minutes.

Not impressed.!!!
Now, it’s quite frustrating. I understand the importance of confirming a person's identity, I’m familiar with apps, but this system is ineffective. It's slow, irritating, and overly time-consuming. With the previous system, I could renew my DBS annually online and it was simple, quick and straightforward. I've wasted valuable time meticulously following the instructions, only to be informed that my ID is not recognised, which means I'll need to go to the post office instead.
This system overall does not work.!!!!

So complicated!
I’ve been round and round in circles trying to use this app just because it is a facility that I might need in the future. I managed to get the HMRC app to work but this one is just a complete mystery. I think you would need to be very IT literate and anybody who may have been out of touch with computers and links, etc will be completely lost. I thought I was doing the right thing trying to use the latest technology but to be honest, I worry about this if my ID because this is not the simplest way to achieve it.

Gov.U.K.
I am now eligible for my state pension & tried online with the Gov.U.K. Website. After completing all the requirements, the website stated that it is unable to identify my details. I then went to the second option & downloaded the Govuk app. Completed all requirements including scanning my passport & the chip which was accepted. Then a photo on the phone screen was accepted. This is my 3rd attempt to try and get through this process but unfortunately the system does not work. It’s extremely frustrating that I am due for my pensions since March 2024 but still struggling to get through the app or online.
Kindly help with your system as I fail to understand that if all doc are correct & accepted then what am I doing wrong.

After struggling with getting police, banks, post offices etc. to verify your details for minor issues or buying a house this service is just amazingly efficient and simple.

Nice because it will hard for scammers to use your account. I hope my details is protected. I had old account created in 2022 but does not work anymore. Then, yesterday I have 2 more log in account account which did not allow me to log in. I hope HMRC will delete those previous accounts. and retain only this.

Really easy. Worked perfectly
Just used this to verify my ID for a DBS check and it was fast and easy once I'd got everything ready.
The app guides you through taking a pic of your photo ID I was using my passport so I also had to scan the chip. If you have ever paid for something with your phone you already know what to do, just touch the top of your phone to the picture of the chip on the front of the passport. It then uses the selfie camera to match your face to the photo on the ID. It successfully matched me even though I didn't remove my glasses.

A bloody nightmare
Spent ages completing the online report for Parkinson’s. Then towards the completion was asked do you have any other problems that we need to know about. Yes thanks for the reminder I had completely forgotten that I have glaucoma. Which you already are aware because I notified you when I first got it, a few years back, and I did a driving/ eye exam which you must have on record. But the on line form for the Parkinson’s has now stopped me from going any further and instructed me to down load both forms to complete. I am not a happy bunny. Merry Christmas and a happy new year

Improvement required
I logged in to my government gateway account. A message was sent to my phone with a number which I put in. But apparently that was not enough. I then had to give my national insurance number driving license account above things and I’m still not to sign in.

Gov UK ID
Useless if you are very short sighted and wear glasses as when you take them off, firstly you can’t read the photo taking instructions and secondly you can’t see what’s on the screen when it’s taking g the photos. I do have contact lenses so I was able to run and pop them in but for those who only wear glasses it’s a nightmare. I caused havoc at French Customs as I couldn’t see the instructions or even where the camera was without my glasses. The UK guys at Eurostar said the French were getting very cross with “blind” people and they had spent their shifts laughing at them trying to deal with this issue. Fine if you have good sight but a nightmare if you don’t. Please sort it out as it’s very embarrassing. Thank you

Reasonably straightforward until
I was asked to scan the chip in my passport. Had I fully followed all of the instructions? I might’ve realised that when you place your camera on the front of your passport one needs to move it until the chip within the passport is located.
It took me some time to achieve this, but I was successful in the end.

Impressively good
My heart sank when this app said it needed to confirm my ID by comparing a selfie of my face with a my passport photo. I’m so used to this stuff going horribly wrong if you don’t take the photos in the absolute perfect lighting conditions etc. This app absolutely proved me wrong - worked flawlessly first time and uses some pretty neat image recognition tricks to make sure the photos line up perfectly and lighting doesn’t seem to matter. A lot of steps to onboard but much better than having to send all my IDs in the post and pray they arrive/come back. Great job!

Poor instructions
When you write instructions - you need to write from the point of view of the user who hasn’t a clue what to do. NOT from the point of view of the person who is creating/testing the app. Grab an old person from the street and get them to use it. If they can - your instructions are good. These ones are not. Sorry. I nearly gave up trying to scan the passport.

Worked Well
This system works well provided you have everything to hand. Note to site managers; you need an on screen note to tell users to remove phone covers beforehand otherwise the bio-chip scan won’t work. Once I took my cover with magnetic pad off it all worked fine. 🙂

Easy if you have everything ready
Easy to use convenient and as long as you look at the list and you have everything ready then that’s easy enough to deal with and the explanation and the instructions are clear to follow. The only thing I would say is that your scanning of the front of your passport, you only need a little square at the bottom to be close to the phone and that wasn’t made clear enough really they give you a little diagram but because it say close your passport and put the phone over the front cover of your passport. You don’t realise that the camera has to be at the bottom where they would passport is and then there’s a little microchip otherwise easy and I think it’s a really good system.

Finally our Gov getting it right
This app is amazing. I had to get a new Gov ID so I was apprehensive about securing my access with 2FA and the Gov ID app. I was interested to see if it worked as it would make my account highly secure but would I have to wait for my Gov ID password to be received in the post? Absolutely not! This worked like a dream. I set my online account up with Google Authenticator and used the Gov ID app for facial verification and inside 20 minutes I’m all done and synchronised to me home computer. This is like MI5 working with Mission Impossible. This is how security should be. Great work Gov. proud to be British again.

HORRENDOUS
Absolutely hideous! Eg, tells you to take glasses off then has small written questions on small iPhone screen (even tablet would be bigger! You have to use that also). This for people over 66!!! What a joke!
I’ve waited over 6 weeks for pension forecast not to arrive plus 50 plus minutes on phone call trying to get through without success! So had to try this way. Now wasted many hours just trying to find out what I can claim after having to wait til 66 when went up from 60 expectations & never gone up previously to 66 when no time to make plans. Yes I’m a born in 50’s female!! A very unhappy one after all this!! It reall is taking the ****.

Taking a pic of DL
Taking a pic of my drivers license only seemed to work once I put the phone torch on despite it being very light and perfectly legible without. The torch being on only seemed to add the glare it persistently told me it was receiving without it. So if you can not get the app to take the photo. Turn the torch on!

Biometric chip not found
Can see a lot of work has gone into this app, I feel for the tech team behind it because ultimately my iPhone could not connect to the chip in my passport despite trying all the different options shown in the app. It appears to detect it but can’t successfully connect or do the transfer it needs to do as I can see the loading bar appear when I slide to phone to the correct part of the passport. If it worked, 5 stars easy. Great UX up until that point.

Ridiculous and time consuming faff
The whole process is time consuming - I had to use the app as the only payslip I have access to I paid zero income tax and this wasn’t acceptable. My chip is the other way around on my passport so repeatedly doing exactly what the app says didn’t help and I had to go to Google to explain the chip could be somewhere else. If anyone else wanted to pay my income tax I would willingly let them so I don’t understand this ridiculous verification process or why my old gateway account doesn’t exist any more.

For an elderly person who is not computer literate the whole procedure is a little confusing ie. Phone, type, iPad, computer, scan app. Took a little time to organise everything! Otherwise not a bad experience.

It’s fiddly to scan a passport page eat the best of times, (due to the shiny reflective nature of the page) but we expect to use a white or light background - only the app only tells me to NOT use a white background after 5 mins of fiddling around with a white background!! Sequence of such instructions could be improved?

I’ve tried 8 times to verify my ID and each time it fails. I need P60 information as a new starter for an important role and this delay is causing a lot of problems for my new employer.
Why is it so difficult when I am a UK citizen and have lived in the UK all my life?
I couldn’t afford to renew my passport so have been using my photo on my driving licence. Yet my passport doesn’t have my address anyway!

Online biometrics identification confirmation
Absolutely brilliant and easy to follow the instructions for scanning your passport and using the app etc. Artificial Intelligence at its best and no having to deal with a human on the other end of a phone after waiting for over an hour … all of these people will soon be replaced by A.I. anyway and will become available to pick the country’s fruit & vegetables … so a win win situation for everyone!

This is just absurd. TWICE I have had problem with the app. First off, they scanned my name wrongly and put both my entire full name into my surname and first name. Not everyone has a passport that separates the first and surname.
AGAIN, similar issue. I can’t identify MYSELF through the app because the app couldn’t scan my name properly and apparently I have two different names and nobody couldn’t help me and now I’ve to call the office everytime I want to know how much I need to pay for my tax instead of having a tax account online. I need to start my new job soon and this is such a hassle.
Fix your app please. If I could give you 0 star, I would have.

The app has improved significantly since last time. One month ago, I was trying to log in, into my account but the app did not work at all! Worked!
I’ve tried to access the gov gateway a few times over the years but never managed - it wanted weird and wonderful information that I never seemed to have correct. Today, for the first time, it was smooth and easy! Accessed using Irish passport scan and chip reader, face scan and match with my uk drivers license,simple. Good and well explained process.

Martin Lewis makes accessing government gateway soooooo easy!!!! I tried years ago in vain and I’ve just tried again now for an hour. Still as useless. Photographed driving licence and did the face scan but then said didn’t recognise me!!!!! Unbelievable as newish iPhone and latest iOS.
Even the phone lines are appalling!!! Wasted two hours of recording’s and endless department choices, only to be cut off!!!!! I am a patient person but this is the worst service I’ve ever encountered.

Just used this app to verify my ID when changing address with HMRC. I thought it was really good and worked like a dream for me. It uses the phone to read the photo from the chip on your passport then uses facial recognition to check it is really you. It seems like overkill for an HMRC address change. It is likely to lead to info not being up to date because it makes it harder. However, it feels like a really useful app for remote ID verification. I hope that they will licence it beyond government applications. It gets really bad reviews here so clearly not everyone has such a positive experience as me. However, if my experience is not unique, it seems they may have cracked it!

Difficult to put into words how bad this app is
The UKs HMRC is dreadful. They showed an improvement with ID verify and partnerships with Experian, Barclays etc and it was great. Then for whatever reason they decided to get ride of it. It was probably the only thing that worked so they got rid of it. I’ve put highly confidential info (my passport) into the app and I can’t get in to see it. I’ve got to redo the process with my passport again. You’re obligated to give personal info to an organisation that you have zero confidence in. Awful. May be the UK could learn how to do things like this from a developed country?

Worked perfectly for me
The only slight issue I had was finding the location of the chip in my passport. It wasn’t on the front near the chip icon, it was on the back. Once I’d located the chip, the phone read it in seconds and with a face scan my identity was verified in a couple of minutes total.

Totally redundant
I click link gov id check on the webpage and it takes me to the App Store when I open the app I allow access and press continue id pops up saying link gov check id so I press it and it takes me straight back to the App Store over and over tried deleting and re downloading but no matter how many times I try click link with the app it just takes me straight back to the App Store and doesn’t actually do anything trust them the fumble making a simple ID checking app

Can’t verify my identity
For the past two weeks I have been trying to verify my identity through the app. It won’t let me get past the instruction point of scanning my passport chip. As soon as I press “continue”, the next page says “something went wrong. Try verifying your identity another way”. I can’t use the other method. I have called HMRC. I have emailed different support mails and no one seems to understand there is a problem with the app because they keep telling me to follow the same instructions that I have been following from the start. Please test the app and you’d notice the problem. It needs to be fixed as it is making easy things very difficult.

Need latest driving licence
I tried the app several times the other week and it wouldn’t identify me. I replaced my driving licence after my original one was destroyed after going through the wash. Tried the new licence (different style and look to my original) and the app has worked perfectly. Possibly only works with the latest style driving licences Hope this helps others DVLA sent new licence to me within 3 days as well.

Is this a joke?
I don’t understand how or why this is an option. For lack of a broken description, its a broken app. Getting to MY information is as difficult as it can be already. Now, HMRC have cone up with another idea and its clealry based on he fundamental idea that insainty it doing something over and over again and expecting different results. I want iff the merry go round that is this app. Let me know when it ACTUALLY works. FYI, i could not bring myself to give one star for this but know it wont let me scre less. Im off for a lay down!

UK digital services FTW
This app is great. UK digital services are actually making a decent effort in improving the digital footprint of the UK government. Loved being able to ID myself using a smartphone rather than some paper based or phone process. Quick and simple, scan worked well and the ID photo screen was awesome. I didn’t even have to line things up properly

Absolute joke
I cannot confirm my identity via the HMRC website no idea why , have driving licence, passport , paid tax whole life , then took me down this app loop which makes you download the app then connect to gov website but it doesn’t allow you too, like another person said takes you on an infinite loop and never gets to the verification stage . Plus no HMRC phones lines are working anymore - all online . Quick enough taking my tax every month - might just stop paying that and see how long it takes them to contact me !
